I love Simon Kuper's writing. Simon Kuper writes in the FT: I'm belatedly warming up to historical pessimism. Even scientific progress has limited value. We now have vaccines against measles, but also a US health secretary, Robert F Kennedy Jr, who spreads doubt about vaccines. As for tech, this century it has probably worsened our lives. We now average nearly seven hours a day online, alone, increasingly atomised, stripped of privacy, absorbing nonsense. And think of other technological “advances”. True, vaccines contained Covid-19, but the CIA concluded that the pandemic probably began with a Chinese lab leak. Processed foods fuelled global obesity. Nuclear proliferation may worsen as the US stops protecting its allies. Above all, the technology of burning carbon has caused a kind of untreated planetary cancer. Being raised on Russian children's stories might have helped us grasp all this. https://www.ft.com/content/a3b6e6c1-831f-45bc-8565-81193ce07f5a From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Kuper: Kuper has written several books, starting with the William Hill awarded Football Against the Enemy (1994), which was later released in the United States as Soccer Against the Enemy. The Times wrote of the book: "If you like football, read it. If you don't like football, read it." In 2003 he published his book Ajax, The Dutch, the War: Football in Europe during the Second World War. He co-authored the 2009 book Soccernomics with Stefan Szymanski. The authors subsequently put forward a formula allowing Kuper to predict that Serbia and Brazil would play the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final. His book The Football Men, which was published in 2011, offered a collection of articles about the world of football over a span of 13 years, along with new pieces written specifically for this book. The Independent wrote that "Simon Kuper is a refreshing antidote to the current media obsession with 'getting the nannies [nanny goats = quotes]', however banal, from players. He doesn't mince his words: talking of past greats, he dismisses Bobby Charlton as "a dullard", Michel Platini "a weak character" and Pele "a talking puppet." Kuper's book Barça: The Rise and Fall of the Club that Built Modern Football appeared in 2021. It won the Sunday Times award for Football Book of the Year 2022. Also in 2021, Kuper released The Happy Traitor,[28] an account of the life and motivations of George Blake, a British spy for the Soviet Union. The narrative, praised for its detailed exploration and understanding of Blake's complex character, sheds light on Blake's ideological shifts and personal struggles with identity and marks a significant addition to Kuper's body of work. In 2022 he published Chums - How a Tiny Caste of Oxford Tories Took Over the UK, about the connections that enabled a university network to dominate Westminster. The FIFA World Cup tournament officially kicked off earlier this week and hosts John Doyle and Sonja Missio have lots to talk about this episode, starting with Canada's bitter 1-0 loss to Belgium and Alphonso Davies' missed penalty shot. Former Canadian national team star Diana Matheson joins us to break down Canada's performance in their first game and what their strategy might be going forward. Plus, John and Sonja delve into other results from the first round of the group stage - including favourite moments and current controversies. And later in the episode, John speaks to Simon Kuper, the bestselling author of the book Soccernomics, about this World Cup and how data hasn't really revolutionized the sport.
In this episode we discuss Soccernomics: Why European Men and American Women Win and Billionaire Owners Are Destined to Lose by Simon Kuper and Stefan Szymanski. Next time we'll discuss The Authenticity Hoax: How We Get Lost Finding Ourselves by Andrew Potter.

In this episode we discuss Nostalgia for the Absolute by George Steiner. Next time we'll discuss Soccernomics by Simon Kuper and Stefan Szymanski.Recording of the CBC Massey Lecture by George Steiner on YouTube.
The economics of football are immense, intricate, and understood by few - with weekly wages in the hundreds of thousands, and player transfers in the hundreds of millions. One of those few is Simon Kuper, today's guest and author of Soccernomics - the seminal book on how the money flows in football and one of my favourite books of all time. He is releasing an updated version of the book prior to the world cup in Qatar later this month - he came on Jimmy's Jobs to discuss why this will be such a tightly contested tournament, the significance of it being held in Qatar and why it actually hasn't cost $220billion as many outlets have reported…We also discuss the wider economics of football such as the jobs it has created, whether will we ever see the first billion-pound player and why we should feel sorry for footballers. Simon is one of the most interesting people I have ever met and I hope you enjoy listening to the most on-brand 'Jimmy McLoughlin' podcasts we've ever made. You can up to Jimmy's substack here for weekly content on the future of work, technology, and politics. In this episode we discuss:How he describes himself at a party. The republishing of Soccernomics- the changes in the economics of football since he wrote the book 10 years ago. The economics of the Football World Cup. The significance of Qatar hosting the world cup. Will we see protests at the world cup?How is social media impacting the economics of football?Which footballers have had the most interesting post-career jobs? The future of non-playing jobs in football. The myth of the omnipotent manager and why football was modelled on the army. When will we see the first female manager in the Premier League? Why capital cities aren't successful at winning European Cups- and when will PSG win it?Will we see the first billion-pound player? How does the branding of a player impact the value of them?Which clubs have had the best transfer policy? The next frontier of football post-data.What Messi does off the ball.Who is the greatest player of all time? The compensation phenomenon and the dilemma of being a footballer. The new ownership structure of Chelsea and Todd Boehly. Who will win the World Cup?Subscribe so you don't miss any new episodes, releasing every Wednesday. Also make sure you subscribe to The Shift- you can find it here on Spotify or on Apple Podcasts. The case for reparations in women's football. It's a big statement. Here at The Dive, we first thought it was just clickbait. So we reached out to the journalist Simon Kuper who penned this article for the Financial Times - ‘Women's football: the case for reparations.' With the success of England's Lionesses close in our rear view mirror, we wanted to explore this rich history of women's football that we just were not aware of. Luisteraars! How a Tiny Caste of Oxford Tories took over the UK. How A Tiny Caste Of Oxford Tories Took Over The Uk en De vrolijke verrader. GUQ Professor Danyel Reiche spoke to Simon Kuper, Financial Times columnist and bestselling author, about Kuper's new book "The Barcelona Complex," as well as the links between Qatar and FC Barcelona, and how Lionel Messi's recent transfer from FC Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain can be related to the Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022. Simon Kuper(born in Kampala, Uganda in 1969) was educated at Oxford University and Harvard. He writes a weekly column for the Financial Times. He is British but lives with his wife and three children in Paris. His books include "Soccer Against the Enemy" (1994), "Ajax, The Dutch, The War: Football in Europe During the Second World War" (2003), and Soccernomics (co-authored with Stefan Szymanski, 2009). Kuper's biography of the British-KGB double agent George Blake, "Spies, Lies, and Exile," was published by the New Press in May 2021. His book "The Barcelona Complex," about FC Barcelona, appears in August 2021 with Penguin Press.
On this week's episode of Greatest Games, Simon Kuper joins Jonathan and Marcus to look back on the 2011 Champions League final between Barcelona and Manchester United. Over the decade preceding this final, Barcelona's fabled academy La Masia was quietly assembling the greatest generation of footballing talent to be produced at one time by a single club. It was in this final when that crop of talent – which included Xavi, Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets and Gerard Pique along with the addition of extraordinary imports Dani Alves, Eric Abidal and David Villa – best applied their abilities to Barcelona's Cruyffian tactics and decimated the Premier League champions on European football's grandest stage. Recorded on Tuesday 3 August, just ahead of the news regarding Lionel Messi's departure from Barcelona. About the panel: Jonathan Wilson founded The Blizzard in 2011 and is editor of the magazine. He's contributed to numerous publications including the Guardian and Sports Illustrated as well as having authored Behind the Curtain, Inverting the Pyramid, The Outsider, Angels with Dirty Faces and most recently The Names Heard Long Ago, among others. Marcus Speller is a host of the Football Ramble podcast as well as Answerable Questions with Questionable Answers. Marcus also regularly hosts our live Q&A events across the country alongside Jonathan. Simon Kuper is a columnist for the Financial Times and author of many books, including Soccernomics, Ajax: The Dutch, The War and most recently Barca: The Inside Story of the World's Greatest Football Club released this week. Football is the world's game with billions of people watching and playing the beautiful game. Preseason is the the perfect opportunity for the biggest clubs in the world like Liverpool, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid to tour the world, playing exhibition matches in front of a new audience, to improve brand awareness, marketing and following. Equally this is an opportunity for fans from around the world to see their favourite players in person. But what if you buy tickets specifically to see a footballer, and they fail to make the team? Do you have the right to take legal action?
The English Premier League is a multi-billion dollar industry that's enjoyed almost unparalleled success and growth as a global brand since its inception 25 years ago. But COVID-19 has wiped-out match-day revenues, and simmering tensions over the financial structure of the league have recently boiled over. Add to that a cooling market for broadcast rights which would hit club income. So is the world's most famous football league beginning to lose its shine? Oliver Regan has been assessing the outlook. We spoke to Stefan Szymanski in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He's a Professor of Sport Management at the University of Michigan. He's an expert on the economics of sports, focusing on football. He's also written extensively on the subject, including co-authoring the New York Times bestseller, Soccernomics. #PremierLeague #BroadcastRights #EnglishPremierLeague

Episode Notes In this episode, I tackle regression to the mean and it's a chance to fine tune your BS detectors and understand this common phenomenon that doesn't get enough attention. Don't get conned into thinking medications or other interventions are working. And perhaps you might think twice before calling for your football team's manager to be sacked as well. I also talk about a new paper in the BJSM about strength training and the strong evidence that is emerging on its value for preventing injuries - if you are not already then strength training of some sort should be on your list of things to incorporate into any exercise programme. And, finally, I mention Robert Webb's book that is now out in paperback and a rather cool app, Forest, that gamifies the Pomodoro method. Billy Beane, GM of Oakland Athletics and of Moneyball fame considers Stefan the "Bill James of Soccer", the analytical underpinning of a sport with talent scouts, managers, executives, even fans who rely more on perceptions & opinion vs. objective data. Stefan tackles current issues in the game, like what to do for an English national team recovering from embarrassment post Allardyce, wage caps for youth and first team for teams in the Premier League for or against, the rise of MLS & China and the women's leagues. Good discussion. Check out Stefan's current book, Money & Soccer What else can you find on this channel? Deconstructing American Soccer (part II) is a discussion of the economics of the American version of the game. Joining us is award-winning economist from the University of Michigan and author of Soccernomics and Money and Soccer, Stefan Szymanski. This in depth interview, hosted by Jim Hart and Jon Townsend, takes a look at why Major League Soccer is structured so differently than most other leagues from around the world. Stefan walks us through the issues facing MLS methods and the challenges it faces in an ever competitive landscape.
Sports industry commentator and Financial Times columnist Simon Kuper spoke to SB Weekly about how moving from country to country when he was growing up gave him a different viewpoint on sport, and how he approaches his writing on sport. Drawing on themes from his best-selling book Soccernomics, he also discusses the myth of the manager, and the growing impact of statistics in sport.
Dean, Sean and John are joined by "Soccernomics" author and University of Michigan professor Dr. Stefan Szymanski as well as Detroit City FC co-owner Todd Kropp to talk about the economics of DCFC, the NPSL, American soccer and sports in general. (Warning: This interview contains what Sean described at the time as "one of the most productive promotion and relegation discussions ever to occur in the United States." Listen at your own risk.) We also get an update on Keyworth investment from Todd and talk about NPSL realignment's implications for DCFC's 2016 schedule. International football is ceasing to be treated as a reenactment of Europe's horrible past. Is the age of football as a substitute for war coming to an end? "A World Cup without Germany would be like Star Wars without Darth Vader," remarked David Winner, and Germany were the perfect villain: the bad guy who killed the beautiful teams, like Hungary in 1954, Holland in 1974, France in 1982. But the new, reunified Germany has ceased to be Darth Vader, and just don't provoke the same hatred anymore. In Episode Four of the Blizzard Podcast we look back at Simon Kuper's 'Where's Darth Vader Gone?' from Issue Five, published in June 2012. We're keen to hear your feedback and suggestions on these new podcasts - email podcast@theblizzard.co.uk, or find us on Twitter @blzzrd. Simon Kuper is author of Football Against the Enemy, a winner of the William Hill Sports Book of the Year, and Ajax, The Dutch, The War. His latest book, The Football Men, was published by Simon & Schuster in May 2011. He is a columnist with the Financial Times. A new expanded edition of Soccernomics (previously called Why England Lose in the UK) was published last summer. Issue Five, like all issues of the Blizzard, is available on a pay-what-you-like basis from www.theblizzard.co.uk. Digital downloads cost as little as a 1p each (RRP £3), while print versions are available from £6 + postage (RRP £12). You can also find us on the Kindle and Google Play stores.
For Beyond 50's "Finance" talks, listen to an interview with Simon Kuper. He'll talk about modern success being in chaos. Barely a summer goes by now without a cherished club flirting with bankruptcy or a wealthy businessman funding a mid-table team's ascension to Champions League competitor. You'll learn about the abolition of the maximum wage in the 1960s, through to the impact of TV money, both at home and abroad in the 1990s and 2000s, Kuper will explain how money, or lack of, affects fans' favorite clubs. Intense competition is good for the fans, so long as football clubs survive - which they always do. The rich men who sink their fortunes into subsidizing our entertainment should be encouraged to go on doing so - their loss is our gain. Stefan Szymanski has had an interesting week ever since launching his April 23, 2015 blog post which was the shot heard around professional soccer. Using information from a source close to Major League Soccer, Szymanski detailed what he felt were specific issues with the MLS financial model, comparing it to both a pyramid scheme and suggesting the potential for the league's collapse. This created a firestorm of online controversy, with readers both for and against his assertions, and even fostered a response from the MLS Commissioner Don Garber. Szymanski covers his post, point-by-point, on the podcast, as well as explains some of the reasonings behind each factor listed, addresses some of the issues that critics of his post had, and whether any new information has come out that has either confirmed or changed his view points. Twitter: @SSZY Note: This podcast episode was the first time that I felt the need to expand the intro (over 10 minutes, which you can skip if you feel its not necessary) to explain not only my thoughts on the entire subject, but some of the issues surrounding Szymanski's interview and blog post, as well as sports business financial systems in general.
