The Gospel of Musical Theatre

We've got the Lutherans to thank for this one. It's the worst-ever name for a musical, but Peter & Nathan think that 2001's Urinetown, with music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann & Greg Kotis, is worthy of your attention – and some sustained theological reflection. _________________________________________ We talk about: The show's origin story (thanks, Lutherans!) and its unfortunately timed Broadway debut on the heels of 9/11. The politics of Urinetown – capitalist overlords versus the people's revolution, all painted in broad, satirical brushstrokes. Are there any responsible political figures in this show? What is Urinetown? A prison for malefactors? A way for the powerful to prey on the vulnerable? Death? Despair? "Following your heart" – What does that mean? And what if whatever your heart seems to be telling you turns out to be wrong? The power of music (particularly Gospel music) to move us to action. Who "should" be singing this music, and who is it for?   You'll hear: "Too Much Exposition" / "What is Urinetown?" – satirical take-downs of conventional musical theatre tropes "I See A River" / "Run Freedom, Run" / "Follow Your Heart" – Urinetown asks some complicated questions about love and justice. And the music is pretty dang good. You'll hear Hunter Foster, John Cullum, Jennifer Laura Thompson, Jeff McCarthy, Spencer Kayden and the Original Broadway Cast from the 2001 recording. _________________________________________ Check out some of our all-time favorites! In this discussion, James talks to Manchester Metropolitan Uni's Jo Bodley and Jeff McCarthy who both lecture in Digital Marketing, as well as Ellie England, Commercial Director at Microsoft Advertising who is also based in Manchester and part of the IAB's Northern group. In an industry where it might once have been considered "career-ending" to move out of London, they discuss how - in a post-COVID world - you can still work 'in London' with the weighted salary, the opportunities and other benefits, but not have to live within commuting distance of the office. They also cover Manchester Met's partnership with the IAB and how recruitment and retention policies have been rapidly improving. Read more about IAB UK's partnership with MMU on our site. About Today's Show In today's episode, we speak with the dean of the Faculty of Continuing Education, Jeff McCarthy. These days the need to always be learning is more relevant than ever.  And a really good option is continuing education, especially if you need very specific skills in a hurry.  Seneca College has one of the largest continuing education departments in the country, and is the choice of thousands (tens of thousands, actually) for "upskilling" and "re-skilling" during these competitive times. Some quick facts about Seneca’s Continuing Education program: Seneca College Continuing Education offers over 1000 courses, and there’s over 150 programs. There are approximately 50,000 registrations per year. Seneca College Continuing Education offers diplomas, certificates, graduate certificates, and even degrees.  Also in this episode, we talk about: 1.  Who is the "typical" continuing education student. 2.  What are the most popular courses 3.  What new programs have just launched. About Today's Guest, Jeff McCarthy Jeff has spent over 20 years in education in a variety of capacities, from teaching, to sales, to management and higher education administration until becoming Dean of Faculty of Education at Seneca in 2016. Some recent news regarding Seneca’s Continuing Education program, is the Fall 2019 launch of Seneca’s Centre for Graduate and Professional Studies and Seneca’s first Downtown Campus, located in the heart of Toronto’s financial district. He regularly participates in Seneca’s United Way and Campaign 4 Students drives…Perhaps most notably for the year he and Helix Director, Chris Dudley(who was a guest on last season’s show) shaved their heads for the United Way, raising over $4,000). Jeff is also an active volunteer in his local community having coached over 32 youth hockey and soccer teams.   Important Links and Contact Information All COVID-19 related information, questions or concerns should be sent to health@senecacollege.ca For Updates on Seneca's Policies Regarding COVID-19, visit here: https://inside.senecacollege.ca/health This Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts! #SenecaProud Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, which means it's available pretty much wherever you get your podcasts.   Click here to subscribe. Award-winning blogger Jeff McCarthy has had Lyme disease and the effects continue to cause him problems. We discuss how he still manages to run and race regularly while managing a chronic disease and serious challenges with fatigue. If you are have any kind of chronic illness then his advice will be welcome and it's good commonsense stuff for anybody, with or without problems. Jeff also talks very openly and honestly about the challenges he has experienced with his mental health. Jeff tells us about his journey with Lyme disease and how he had cyclical problems with fatigue and other symptoms. His body crashed in mid-2013 and he lost a lot of weight and was bedridden. He had treatment intermittently for a couple of years before he sought treatment in Brussels from a specialist. Since 2015 he has improved significantly and he has not needed any medication for the past year. The effects still linger and he describes it as "permanently running with flu" but Jeff has become an expert on his own condition and managing it day-to-day. Jeff McCarthy is bringing the good stuff to the people of Greensboro, North Carolina.  Bread from his new microbakery is popping up at farmers markets and being dropped off via a new subscription service. And he's also caring for two kids as a stay at home dad at the same time. In this episode, Mark learns about Jeff's wild and crazy journey in food and pastry before getting bitten by the bread bug, what it's like baking in your mother in law's kitchen and why a babysitter will likely be his first bakery employee.  It's a fun chat with a very interesting fellow. This week our hosts will chat with Aerlyn James about which of life's truths can be gleaned from the Broadway classic, Chicago!BOOK TICKETS TO SEE SAVOYARD’S CHICAGOBen Brantley, in his review for The New York Times, wrote "'Make love to the audience' was another Fosse dictum. That's exactly what Ms. Reinking and her ensemble do. Chicago can still seem glibly cynical and artificially cold, especially in its weaker second act.
