Making It in The Toy Industry
#268: The Truth Behind Being a Game Inventor with Jeremy Posner

Making It in The Toy Industry

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 30, 2025 45:32 Transcription Available

Behind every “yes” in the toy industry, there's a mountain of “no's,” countless hours of hustle, and more trial and error than most people expect. At one point, he came close to walking away from it all—until a single line from an episode of Bluey reminded him that making games was exactly what he was meant to do.In this episode Making It In The Toy Industry, I'm joined by the incredibly talented Jeremy Posner, owner of Shenanigans Toys and Games, the inventor behind hit games like Beagle or Bagel, Bears in Barrels, and Piggy Piggy. He's been named to the Mojo Nation 100 SIX times, won Game Innovator of the Year at the TAGIEs, and has worked with some of the biggest names in the toy industry like Hasbro, Mattel, and Spin Master. But here's the plot twist: it took Jeremy EIGHT years to meet his royalty goals. And that's after winning major awards and getting meetings with big companies right out the gate. You're gonna hear why just licensing a game doesn't mean you've made it, what really makes a game “sellable” to toy companies, and why most ideas just don't cut it. Jeremy also explained the real deal with royalties or advances, and how long it actually takes to see a check.  He even shared how he trained his brain to be more creative (yes, that's a thing!).Dreaming of creating the next game night hit or just curious what it really takes to make it in toys and games?Hit play and steal a few smart moves for your next big creative leap.Listen for these Important Moments! [00:03:07] - Despite early wins, including a TAGIE award and a background at Big Monster Toys, Jeremy didn't hit his financial goals from game licensing until eight years in. [00:11:17] - After Toy Fair, Jeremy reflects on the silence that often follows a pitch. He explains how learning why you're hearing “no” (and from whom) is key to improving your ideas and not losing steam.[00:23:00] - Around year four, Jeremy stopped “just creating” and started strategically designing evergreens. He audited his creative process, studied the brain, and trained himself to boost creative output daily.[00:33:04] - Jeremy tests tons of game ideas fast by building quick, minimum viable prototypes. He runs super short playtests to see what's worth developing and keep his creativity flowing.[00:40:35] - Near the end of the episode, Jeremy shares his dream of designing fan experiences for sports teams and creating original game shows, proving he's still dreaming big, even after major success in toys and games.Send The Toy Coach Fan Mail! Introduction Shem Phillips is a board game designer from New Zealand. He often works with S. J. (Sam) Macdonald. The use of trilogies in game design In your sermon online (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXUfbhP20Iw&t=1258s), you mention how game testing is like prayer: “look for feelings not suggestions.” How do you relate today to the loss of your father? In Ezra & Nehemiah, you explore your first explicitly Biblical theme. What went into the decision to design a Bible-themed game? Why Ezra and Nehemiah? You mention a kind of “leap of faith” moment for yourself when you decide to go into board gaming. It was so encouraging. Would advice or encouragement would you have for any listeners who are maybe facing their kind of “leap of faith” moment? the place of music and lyrics You think about life and faith a lot through lyrics (you're in church band, and you describe yourself as a “lyrics nerd”). What are some bands or artists that you think especially excel at good lyrics? The facing of personal tragedies How did religion help you grieve the loss of your dad? Sinikka Waugh and Tim Ferry discuss 5 Bullet Points on How Board Game Design Strategies can be Applied to Solve Your Problem. Tim has made a career out of pursuing creativity and is passionate about helping others to pursue that path as well. His freelance career in composing video game music for indie game developers led to helping others learn music by teaching children how to play piano. He taught private lessons as well as group piano classes for an after-school club. During this time, Tim also explored a new branch of creativity by designing and publishing a board game. He was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to convert his board game design journey into an experience for kids. Combining his past experiences, this turned into an 8-week board game design program for late elementary and early middle school kids that would encourage them to take a step toward being a lifelong creator, designer, and maker. Since launching the program, Tim has also had the opportunity to work with companies that are interested in using board games to build their brand or explore how gamification can be used to move their company forward.

About Joshua GillinghamJoshua Gillingham is an author, game designer, and editor from Vancouver Island, Canada. His fantasy trilogy ‘The Saga of Torin Ten-Trees' is an adventure inspired by the Norse myths and the Icelandic Sagas. Joshua is also the co-author of ‘Old Norse for Modern Times' alongside Ian Stuart Sharpe and Dr. Arngrimur Vidalin. In partnership with Outland Entertainment, Joshua is the founding Worldsmith of the trans-media Outland 'Althingi' World set in Viking Age Iceland, featuring his original card game Althingi: One Will Rise and the groundbreaking anthology Althingi: The Crescent & the Northern Star.Key takeaways:Give learners/ players agency: Learning is an internal process, so figure out how learners can take the information you're providing, and make it a part of their lives. Learners need flexibility and relevant information so that what they learn can be applied for the long-term. To understand different perspectives within the company, consider conducting small group discussions. Prompts and reflective questions are a great way to give agency. The role of ‘randomness' in games has the advantage of surprise and chance. It frustrates the stronger skilled player, whilst the less-skilled player can see an opening and a chance. In learning design, this could be done through suprise questions. Strategically, make sure you give learners a bounded space, e.g. a physical game, to keep them on task, but provide enough agency so they are engaged.Leveraging physical space on game boards: Learning Designers can build a physical space for people to learn from. For game designers, every piece on a board has a cost attached to it, so ask yourself “is this enhancing the experience?”. Be clever with using the most from as little as possible. Segmented time stamps:(02:13) What do we mean by ‘space' in game design?(04:39) How Learning Designers can give players first-level agency(07:52) The notion of ‘roles', and why Learning Designers need to consider this more in their strategy(09:50) Strategies for building ‘randomness' in game design(13:07) Learning from the rule books of the most popular games(16:10) On the space of physical boards(20:29) Multiple pathway learningLinks from the podcast:Visit Joshua's WebsiteConnect with Joshua on TwitterListen to the Learning While Working Podcast interview with Warren KennardCheck out Magic: The GatheringCheck out BoardGameGeek
