Sam Macdonald of Garphill Games discusses his religious journey and board game philosophy. Sam explores the connections between board game design and religious faith, especially in the areas of community, self-expression, rules, fun, and the joy of discovery. We also take a stab at potential games based on Biblical stories. Takeaways Game design can reflect the heart of God by promoting fellowship, agency, following rules, and having fun. The Art of Discovery in games, with hidden gems and Easter eggs, can create a sense of enjoyment and excitement for players. Game design can provide opportunities for players to express themselves creatively and explore different strategies. Following rules in games and in life can lead to a more peaceful and joyful experience. The intersection of games and faith offers unique opportunities for exploration and growth. Finding new strategies and paths to victory in board games can be a fun and rewarding experience. The Bible contains hidden meanings and connections between passages that can be discovered through deep reading and study. Games can facilitate fellowship and problem-solving, providing a safe environment to solve problems and feel a sense of mastery. The art of discovery can also be found in reading scriptures, where the Holy Spirit can illuminate truth to the reader. Designing biblical-themed games can be challenging, as it's important to balance creating enjoyable experiences with conveying a message. Clocking in at 80 Roman miles, or 73 modern miles, Emperor Hadrian of Rome built a wall to separate the Roman province of Britannia from Celtic tribes to the north. The area had no natural boundaries otherwise. Started in 122 CE, it took 6 years to finish and involved three roman legions. Today it is a British cultural icon and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this episode we play Hadrian's Wall, designed by Bobby Hill and published in 2021 by Garphill Games. Introduction Shem Phillips is a board game designer from New Zealand. He founded Garphill Games in 2009 and is known for his medium to medium-heavy Euros such as the medieval trilogies (North Sea, West Kingdom, South Tigris) and Ancient Anthology series. He often works with S. J. (Sam) Macdonald. The use of trilogies in game design In your sermon online (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXUfbhP20Iw&t=1258s), you mention how game testing is like prayer: “look for feelings not suggestions.” How do you relate today to the loss of your father? In Ezra & Nehemiah, you explore your first explicitly Biblical theme. What went into the decision to design a Bible-themed game? Why Ezra and Nehemiah? You mention a kind of “leap of faith” moment for yourself when you decide to go into board gaming. It was so encouraging. Would advice or encouragement would you have for any listeners who are maybe facing their kind of “leap of faith” moment? the place of music and lyrics You think about life and faith a lot through lyrics (you're in church band, and you describe yourself as a “lyrics nerd”). What are some bands or artists that you think especially excel at good lyrics? The facing of personal tragedies How did religion help you grieve the loss of your dad? This week Julius and I talk about Legacy of Yu, from Shem Phillips and Garphill Games. This is part of their Ancients Anthology collection by the same designer. Unlike those games, this game is made for solitaire play only. It's a resource management game with a legacy aspect to it. You will play until you have either won seven games or lost seven games.

We take no time off for Boxing Day here at SVWAG, a day so named because according to the common law of the King (still feels weird saying that) citizens of the Commonwealth are permitted to punch someone in the face on this day only. It's like a pugilistic The Purge but with the metric system and occasional poutine. The news this week features a number of exemplary game titles. Many a stellar game has crossed our paths purely on the strength of its name, whereas others are so generic as to defy searching. Go ahead, find R on Board Game Geek, or the game Quest. The Smart Car was truly out-of-the-box thinking. "Why do passenger cars all have to be the way they are?" asked some clever group of designers, and designed the minimalistic teensy Smart Car. Of course, the challenges posed by manufacturing the little thing, or driving the little thing on a highway, or walking away from a crash in the little thing, proved to be compelling arguments in favour of more traditional passenger car manufacture. What I'm saying is that sometimes the box exists for a reason, notwithstanding the virtues of experimentation. Gil and Scott are delighted to welcome Martin Wallace back to the show. Martin was first on the show on Ludology 46 - Getting Down to Brass Tacks back in 2012 with Geoff Engelstein and a very enthusiastic Ryan Sturm. In this episode, we catch up with Martin to see what he's been up to in the last 9 years. Martin is the designer of many well-loved strategy games, like Brass, Age of Steam (and all its related games, like Railways of the World), London, A Study in Emerald, AuZtralia, and A Study in Emerald. Technical note: Martin's recording has some dropouts in it; unfortunately, those seemed to come straight from his microphone, so there wasn't much we could do about them. We hope you enjoy the episode anyway! SHOW NOTES 1m25s: Lords of Creation 4m31s: Gloomhaven, the North Sea Trilogy from Garphill Games, Jamey Stegmaier. 8m06s: The Exit games, and the Unlock! games 11m53s: Games Workshop, Ian Livingstone, the British Steve Jackson, the American Steve Jackson, and the Fighting Fantasy books. 16m18s: Anno 1800 20m08s: Catan, Dune Imperium 23m55s: Age of Industry 25m18s: "Canal holidays" 27m28s: The World Transplant Games 32m46s: A Study in Emerald 34m18s: Gil regrets not pushing back on this point a bit harder; he doesn't think turning indigenous people into monsters is as effective a technique as Martin does. For a good perspective, check out Dan Thurot's post about this on his excellent blog Space-Biff. 35m53s: Terry Pratchett and Discworld 38m41s: Martin is referring to the events of May 68 in France. 43m53s: Imperium Legends, De Vulgari Eloquentia 45m28s: Ankh: Gods of Egypt, Medina, and “zugzwang” 48m40s: Our favorite Star Wars clones: Starcrash, Battle Beyond the Stars, and a special shout-out to Fugitive Alien. 49m10s: Carcassonne 53m03s: Discworld: Ankh-Morpork, Doctor Who: The Card Game 55m13s: Disclaimer: Many of us on Ludology are pretty down on the HP series these days, due to the bigoted views of its author. 56m59s: The video game Stellaris, the fantasy series His Dark Materials, and the fantasy collection The Silmarillion. 1h00m05s: Rocketmen 1h00m57s: The humble pasty 1h03m32s: Hobo code
We travel back in time to a period of paranoia, and religious inquisitions. No, not the witch hunts but the rarely explored Carolingian Empire, circa 850 AD. Can a morality system work in a board game? Can we give up our life of crime and redeem ourselves? Or will we give in to suspicion of our fellow townsmeeple? Join Mark and Daniel as they talk about the worker-placement board game Architects of the West Kingdom. Follow us on social media or YouTube for more details on our upcoming livestream debrief! Giveaway The winner of a brand new copy of 'Cascadia' is Ritchie A. Congratulations Ritchie! Thank you to everyone who entered the giveaway.

Fala povo!
