James McGrath is back, and we have some serious fun geeking out about theology and Science Fiction!! What is the difference between a god and a powerful alien? Can an android have a soul, or be considered a person with rights? Can we imagine biblical stories being retold in the distant future on planets far from Earth? Whether your interest is in Christianity in the future, or the Jedi in the present--and whether your interest in the Jedi is focused on real-world adherents or the fictional religion depicted on the silver screen--this book will help you explore the intersection between theology and science fiction across a range of authors and stories, topics and questions. James F. McGrath is Clarence L. Goodwin Chair in New Testament Language and Literature. His PhD from the University of Durham became the basis for his first book, John's Apologetic Christology, published by Cambridge University Press in the SNTS Monograph Series. He has also written a “prequel” about the broader context of monotheism and Christology in ancient Judaism and Christianity, The Only True God: Early Christian Monotheism in Its Jewish Context, published by University of Illinois Press. More recently, he has published What Jesus Learned from Women, which explores the topic of the historical figure of Jesus and the influence the women mentioned in the Gospels had on him. In addition to his work on the New Testament and early Christianity, Dr. McGrath also researches the Mandaeans (the last surviving Gnostic group from the ancient world) and their literature. The two-volume critical edition, translation, and commentary on the Mandaean Book of John (which he produced together with Charles Haberl of Rutgers University) represents the first such academic edition of the complete work in English based on all known manuscripts. Another area of specialty is the intersection of religion and science fiction. On that subject, he is the author of Theology and Science Fiction and The Battle of Ranskoor av Kolos (Black Archive #52), editor of Religion and Science Fiction and co-editor of Time and Relative Dimensions in Faith: Religion and Doctor Who. He blogs at Religion Prof. Previous Episodes w/ James The A to Z of the New Testament What Jesus Learned from Women Exploring the Matrix Resurrections Early Christian Monotheism JOIN our next class, GOD AFTER DECONSTRUCTION with Thomas Jay Oord Come to THEOLOGY BEER CAMP. “The Christian life is lived in the imitation of Christ. Through union with Christ, believers receive the fruit of Christ's own character. This is evident from the allusions to “the fruit of the Spirit” (Gal. 5:22) in Jesus' Upper Room Discourse. Jesus taught the disciples that they would share in His love (John 15:9–10), His joy (John 15:11; 17:13), and His peace (John 14:27). The fruit of the Spirit is the description of the primary attributes of Christian character. Jesus promised to send the Spirit as the Helper to impart this grace to His people. As the Spirit of Christ, the Holy Spirit is the agent of producing Christ's love, joy, peace, gentleness, kindness, brotherly love, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control in the lives of all believers.” -Ligonier Ministries. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

Introduction Shem Phillips is a board game designer from New Zealand. He founded Garphill Games in 2009 and is known for his medium to medium-heavy Euros such as the medieval trilogies (North Sea, West Kingdom, South Tigris) and Ancient Anthology series. He often works with S. J. (Sam) Macdonald. The use of trilogies in game design In your sermon online (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXUfbhP20Iw&t=1258s), you mention how game testing is like prayer: “look for feelings not suggestions.” How do you relate today to the loss of your father? In Ezra & Nehemiah, you explore your first explicitly Biblical theme. What went into the decision to design a Bible-themed game? Why Ezra and Nehemiah? You mention a kind of “leap of faith” moment for yourself when you decide to go into board gaming. It was so encouraging. Would advice or encouragement would you have for any listeners who are maybe facing their kind of “leap of faith” moment? the place of music and lyrics You think about life and faith a lot through lyrics (you're in church band, and you describe yourself as a “lyrics nerd”). Welcome to How to Be a Better DM, the official podcast of Monsters.Rent. I'm your host today, Justin Lewis, and together we are going to talk about how to improve your gameplay both from a mechanical and storytelling point of view.Today, I'm excited to talk about an aspect of the game that for me holds a lot of interest and for a lot of people can be a rich source of story elements and intrigue. At the same time, for other people it can be completely boring, and possibly offputting. I'm talking about Gods, faith and religion. Before I get into the rest of today's episode, I want to take a moment to talk about The Guild. For those of you who don't know, the Guild is our unique membership for dungeon masters. It allows you to connect with other DMs like yourself and get access to a library of video courses and downloadable resources for your gameplay. Oh and it's 100% free. I hope you'll join us there, so go to monsters.rent/get-started and scroll all the way to the bottom.Table ComfortNow, the very first thing you need to do is assess your table's comfort level with the topics of God, Religion, and Faith. In some cases, you'll have a natural understanding. In my case, a few members of my table are also members of my faith, so I knew that they would be ok having some of those topics in the game. In other circumstances, it would be a smart idea to ask if the table is alright with those themes and topics being in the game. In most D&D settings, having a mystical god or gods is all part and parcel to the game, but depending on how your players feel about it, then you might want to tread lightly. Some games might be focused on the path of divinity, others might have gods as simply an afterthought. No matter what you do, you want to avoid these two mistakes.Avoid Pushing ReligionSaying this as a religious person, you absolutely do not want to turn your D&D sessions into sermons. I know you're probably thinking that that would kind of be funny, and it might, but honestly, you don't want to force players into roleplaying something they don't want to roleplay. A person's faith is a very personal thing, and if someone is not a person of faith, religion or Diety, then they don't have to be even in a make-believe world.Avoid Making A Farce of ReligionOn the other side of the coin, you definitely don't want to make fun of religion and make it appear as something that is farcical. Even though your players may be ok with it, it's best not to form bad habits because there will come a time when you sit down to play at a table with someone who cares, and then you'll make the slip up of a lifetime. Best to avoid those big mistakes. Extend the same consideration and courtesy you would to any other sort of way of life. Now, with your players on board for having Gods be an active part of the game, let's talk about some other questions you need to ask. These questions apply to both homebrew settings and settings that are prewritten, but the questions will apply a little differently to each. How Involved Will Your Gods BeThe first question that you need to ask is how involved will Godhood (god or gods) be in your setting or game. This is important because if they won't even matter, then you likely don't need anything else in this episode. I'd still recommend listening to the end because you never know when a player might ask you a question or make a choice that will make the gods much more involved. In different settings, Gods behave differently. In some games, Gods are active members of the universe, granting divine boons with ease. In other settings, Gods are basically hidden from sight, deigning not to intervene with their followers' lives. It's important that you know which type of setting yours is and how the Gods will interact with players...

In this episode we explore the links between alcohol and religion. The consumption of alcohol is central to some of the world's most popular religions, and for centuries it has been an important part of religious and spiritual rituals. The question is – why? This relationship between religion and alcohol has a long and fascinating history, and has been explored in great depth by the author, broadcaster and journalist Tom Morton in his recent book ‘Holy Waters: Searching for the sacred in a glass'. Recently the recipient of a Fortnum and Mason Food and Drink Award, the book explores the spiritual tales of drinks like mead, saké and rum, unpacks their religious significance, and highlights the links between brewing, winemaking, and worship. So how does the connection between religion and alcohol manifest across the world? How has this evolved over time? And what impact has religion had on the alcoholic drinks we make, sell and consume today? Guest: Tom Morton, Writer, broadcaster, musician

Dr. Gerard Verschuuren has published a new book: Faith That Makes You Think. In this book, he demonstrates that faith relies on, rather than contradicts, thinking. The Catholic Church, in fact, teaches that there is a strong relationship between faith and reason. St. Augustine could not have said it more clearly when he wrote, “Believers are also thinkers: in believing, they think and in thinking, they believe.… If faith does not think, it is nothing.” This goes against the slogan “Don't think, just believe,” which gives atheists a powerful weapon to say the opposite: “Don't believe, just think.” That would give atheists full reign, which they certainly don't deserve as the book explains. Faith That Makes You Think is specifically written for Catholics—fallen-away Catholics, lukewarm Catholics, struggling Catholics, would-be Catholics—for all those in search of the truth, as it gives life-saving answers to life-size questions. But this episode of DIG LIFE DEEP! will appeal to a broad audience, people of faith and no faith and of course, Catholic, devout or fallen-away. The book received many accolades. Hello and welcome to our final episode of Season Four! That went fast! Don't worry though, we'll be back soon with Season Five before you know it and we have some great episodes planned for you. Today's episode is about how TFMR impacts someone's religious faith. Chelsey was raised with Catholicism taking a central focus in her life and most of her family are active members of the church. After her TFMR, everything change. This has left Chelsey with a secondary loss, the loss of her faith. Still a very spiritual person however, she's learning how to direct this part of herself in a different way. It's a confusing place for Chelsey to hold and she openly discusses the ambiguity she is trying to work through for herself, while grieving and remembering her son, Percy. I'm pleased to introduce you to my friend and a trusted Physician, Dr. Robert T Bailey, a Pharmd and an MD. In today's discussion we touch upon the bygone days of a family physician who was just that, a trusted part of every family. We'll also talk about healthcare reform, concierge medicine, what young physicians future will look like and even take a private moment to pray for Physicians who might be struggling with their own decisions. In the United States, family medicine and primary care are on the verge of extinction. The biggest problem that has defined this issue is the lack of time physicians must spend with their patients, which, on average, is only seven minutes. Since the resources and reimbursement for primary care doctors are so razor thin, these physicians must build up panels of patients reaching into the thousands so they can run 25-30 patients through their office in one day. This is an unsustainable vicious cycle, as more resources are required for these number of patients, dramatically increasing the doctor's overhead. Dr. Bailey has spent the past 45 years in the medical field and has seen the role of family medicine diminish significantly, to the detriment of the patients and their health. He has developed a model that puts the primary care physician back at the center of healthcare and improves patient care coordination. In Membership Primary Care: Transforming Family Medicine Is Key to Healthcare Reform, Robert T. Bailey, PharmD, MD, shares revelatory wisdom that offers solutions for our dysfunctional and expensive healthcare system. Dr. Bailey explores a successful model to restore family medicine to its former days of glory and prominence, so it can play a primary role in reforming our healthcare system, improving the wellness of US citizens, and substantially reducing the high cost of healthcare. United States foreign policy is of great interest to all Americans because of the important thread in the American narrative that says we should use our blessings of freedom and wealth to benefit the world: foreign policy matters. The burning question for us is, how did religion influence American foreign policy and war? To help us answer this question we will talk with Andrew Preston, Professor of American History at the University of Cambridge and author of Sword of the Spirit, Shield of Faith: Religion in American War and Diplomacy. Mr. Preston specializes in the history of American foreign relations, specifically the intersection between national and international, including the influence that domestic politics and culture – particularly religion – have had on conduct of U.S. foreign policy. Also, as with each episode in our podcast series “Religion in the American Experience”, we hope listeners come away with a better comprehension of what religion has done to America and what America has done to religion, and thus more fully comprehend the necessity of this idea of religious freedom to America fulfilling her purposes in the world. We speak of faith as a faculty beyond reason, though not against reason, in terms of belief and trust leading to action. For example, we believe that a certain aspect of life that we encounter, be it a career prospect or marriage opportunity, is ‘good’; trust that the particular role or partner will work out; and commit the action required to fulfil that aspect of life. We discuss forming the conception of good that goes along with this account, and mechanisms, including meditation, for restoring our faith when life throws suffering and loss at us.

Faith community leaders are often first responders after a suicide death. Sometimes, as in my family's situation, faith leaders do an amazing job in supporting a highly traumatized and confused family through their grief journey and facilitate a memorial service that both honors the life that was lived without shying away from the tragedy of suicide. Other times families feel compounded shame and guilt and experience additional layers of loss because of how faith leaders address suicide. Faith beliefs are sometimes shattered in the aftermath of suicide, and anger at God is not uncommon. https://theactionalliance.org/faith-hope-lifehttps://theactionalliance.org/faith-hope-lifeFrom a suicide prevention standpoint, faith communities can foster compassion and support for people who are experiencing hardship, and can use theological reflection to help people make meaning. They can also work closely with mental health resources in the community to build bridges and increase their mental health and suicide prevention literacy. When faced with intervening with someone they are worried about, faith leaders can be trained to expand their pastoral counseling skills to identify someone in an emerging suicide crisis and to help them build out their safety net. Should a suicide impact a faith community, faith leaders are often called upon to conduct memorial services and ofter pastoral care, and thus, would benefit greatly from understanding suicide grief and trauma and best practices in safe and effective messaging.According to Dr. Melinda Moore, 85% of clergy know that helping people in a suicide crisis is part of their responsibility, but they don't know what to do. In this interview with her, we explore some of the findings from a recently released guidelines from the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention called “Suicide Prevention Competencies for Faith Leaders: Supporting Life Before, During, and After a Suicidal Crisis.” We also discuss ways that faith communities can offer support through the National Weekend of Prayer and the resources offered through the “Faith-Hope-Life” campaign.
