In this episode of the Movement Logic Podcast, Sarah and Laurel are thrilled to interview esteemed exercise scientist Professor Belinda Beck, investigator in the groundbreaking LIFTMOR trial. They discuss the necessity of high-intensity resistance and impact training for improving bone density, comparing it to less effective exercises like Pilates, yoga, and walking. Professor Beck shares insights on her LIFTMOR, LIFTMOR-M, and MEDEX-OP studies, underlining the importance of mechanical loading for bone health. They explore the misleading promotion of devices like OsteoStrong or courses like Buff Bones that do not provide the necessary rate of loading or magnitude of load to impact bone density. This isn't a surprise, given the numerous benefits of Pilates, which include refining movement, increasing range of motion, improving breathing, enhancing flexibility, core control, balance, and even cognitive function. For many women who find traditional gyms and weight training intimidating, Pilates offers a more approachable and inclusive form of exercise. In this episode, we learn more about Pilates, the Buff Bones® program and explore its role in bone health and how it benefits individuals with osteoporosis. We can lose 3-5% of our muscle mass each decade after age 30 if we aren't active. We also loose bone mass in our early 30s and we reach our peak bone mass at age 30-35. And, once we hit menopause, we can lose 20-25% of our bone mass. So, it's important to take some action now because the lack of action is destined to lead to decline of bone mass that could potentially lead to fractures down the road.In this episode, Rebekah discusses:Tips for midlife women to maintain bone density and prevent osteoporosisExercises we can do to improve our bone health, balance and mobilityAddressing joint pain, stiffness and fascia pain through strength training and movementBenefits of somatic and internal practices and improving interoceptionSometimes, we think we're doing everything right, but still don't feel any better. Rebekah emphasizes that while Pilates is excellent for holistic health, especially for bone and muscle development, it should be complemented with other forms of exercise like cardio and strength training. Nutrition and internal balance also play important roles in overall physical and mental health. Start with activities that are enjoyable and seek professional guidance and accountability to stay consistent. If you follow the podcast on social media, you may already know that I had a recent osteoporosis diagnosis. I felt dismissed as the doctor prescribed a pharmaceutical, told me to increase my calcium and vitamin D, and they would see me back in two years. Really? That just wasn't good enough, so I went on my own search for answers.I am happy to report that there are professionals out there, like this episode's guest, who are reliable resources to guide you with an effective holistic approach to bone health, strength, and mobility. As I have said before, I am not anti-pharmaceutical, but we owe it to ourselves to do the research to ensure that we are making the most educated decisions possible.Rebekah Rotstein was diagnosed with osteoporosis in her twenties. A former ballet dancer, she has used her love of movement and her pilates instructor experience to develop the Buff Bones program, where she certifies other exercise professionals and works with individuals to help them along in their healthier bones journey. In this episode Rebekah Rotstein and I discuss:- Rebekah's own diagnosis and her decision to not go on a pharmaceutical in her twenties and why some young people and men may have poor bone health- How her education, dance, and pilates background catapulted her into training other fitness professionals and working with clients on their whole bone health journey- The process with which she works with clients and how breathwork is an important foundation- The most common fracture for midlife women (and it's not the hip)- Incorporating mobility and progressive load strength training (for those who are able)- Tendon injury being more prevalent in midlife with the decrease in estrogen- The importance of having good balance and core strength in midlife and beyond- Why walking is not enough to build your bones and some options that you can add to your walking routineYou can find Rebekah Rotstein and Buff Bones at:https://buff-bones.com/Instagram @gotbuffbonesFacebook https://www.facebook.com/BuffHealthyBonesFollow Asking for a Friend on Social media outlets:https://www.instagram.com/askingforafriend_pod/https://www.facebook.com/askforafriendpod/Please provide a review and share. Flowing East and West: The Perfectly Imperfect Journey to a Fulfilled Life
Rebekah Rotstein has always been interested in athleticism and movement: she began ice skating as a 3 year old, she took up ballet soon thereafter, worked as a student athletic trainer in college and developed a deep passion for Pilates in her 20's. There were many times in her young life when Rebekah was away from those closest to her and she had to learn early on how to advocate for herself. When she received an osteoporosis diagnosis at 28 and her doctors wanted to put her on a course of medication that would have had detrimental effects on her body, Rebekah again had to be her own advocate - she refused the medication and dove into research to help her understand what would improve her health. She successfully took charge of her health and ultimately developed the Buff Bones system to address bone and joint health, giving all her students the ability to be their own somatic advocate. Osteoporosis is a disease that affects tens of millions of people each year. Dancers and other high-level athletes are often at higher risk due to low body weight, increased time indoors, and suboptimal nutritional support. Rebekah Rotstein is a former pre-professional dancer who received a shocking diagnosis of osteoporosis at age 28, and then spent the next several years looking for ways to optimize her bone strength through exercise and nutrition. Rebekah is a movement educator and certified Pilates instructor who has presented at conferences and symposia around the world on the topics of bone health, anatomy and movement, and is the founder of Buff Bones®, a research-supported system combining education and focused exercises aimed at the optimization of bone and joint health. Rebekah shares the knowledge she's gained in her extensive research on osteoporosis and stresses that a diagnosis isn't the end of the world but rather a test for advocating for oneself. She discusses why bone density is especially important for those with hypermobility disorders. She theorizes on why dancers should be informed about osteoporosis, and emphasizes the importance of finding a good nutritionist, trainer, and more. Finally, Rebekah shares how her diagnosis planted a desire to help people with osteoporosis, and to help future generations prevent it. A low reading on a bone density scan does not equal a Fosamax deficiency. Healthy bones aren’t hard, they are rigid living tissue, but they also have a certain amount of flexibility. They designed to bend and absorb shock and stress, and in fact one of the ways that bones become stronger is by challenging and surprising them. We have all heard that exercise and movement is good for the bones. But specifically what kinds of exercise, and which movements are helpful? Our guest in this episode took on the challenge of finding out how to live and move your way into healthy bones after a diagnosis of osteoporosis before the age of 30. There are many ways to naturally use movement to strengthen the bones. And there are a lot of movements that you might not even consider as being beneficial, as they seem so simple. But the bones like to be surprised! And they like it when we give them a varied diet of motion and challenge. Listen in and learn how not only to improve the health of your bones, but inhabit a more capable and resilient body.
