What if your mouth could reveal your hormonal health, fertility status, and even your brain's risk for Alzheimer's? In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Leedia Riman, a biological and integrative dentist redefining how we care for our teeth. She reveals the science behind estrogen receptors in the mouth, jawbone, and salivary glands—and how they link oral health to menopause, fertility, and brain aging. We explore the oral microbiome and how an imbalance can spark inflammation that spreads to the brain, gut, and even the placenta. Dr. Leedia explains how testing your oral microbiome can flag disease risks early, and why every woman over 35 should understand what's happening inside her mouth. This episode isn't just for women—oral inflammation also impacts male fertility, bone density, and long-term health. From dry mouth to dementia, pregnancy gingivitis to biofilm mapping, this is one of the most eye-opening conversations we've had on The Neuro Experience.*** About Dr. Riman: Dr. Leedia Riman is a Beverly Hills biological and integrative dentist who connects oral health with whole-body wellness. What happens when even surgery and supplements can't get a broken bone to heal? When Dr. Ben Weitz fractured his femur and was told it might never heal, he turned to the same principles he's used with patients for decades: ‘root cause, functional medicine' thinking. In this conversation, he shares how he designed a bone-healing protocol that combined targeted nutrition, vitamin K2 and vitamin D optimization, growth factors, and the right kind of exercise stimulus. We also discuss why bone loss and osteoporosis aren't just ‘aging issues', how testing like trabecular bone scores can reveal what DEXA scans miss, and why many medications block bone repair instead of rebuilding it. The story offers a powerful look at how science, persistence, and patient intuition can work together to restore strength naturally. If you've ever worried about bone density, fractures, or slow healing, this episode will help you understand what your bones really need to rebuild safely and effectively.Episode Timeline: 00:00 – Episode Preview01:35 – Podcast Intro 02:45 – Dr. Weitz's Hip Fracture Story04:40 – Rehab and Early Supplements08:20 – Deciding Against Revision Surgery09:50 – Understanding Bone Cells11:45 – Using Forteo for Healing12:45 – Why Monitoring Bone Markers Matters13:50 – Adding Growth Hormone14:50 – Bone Stimulator Protocol15:27 – Effective Exercises for Bone16:40 – Ballistic Loading Benefits17:55 – Bone Density vs Bone Strength18:37 – Understanding Trabecular Bone Score19:40 – Why Positioning Affects DEXA21:10 – Reading Full DEXA Printouts23:22 – Men Rarely Get Bone Scans27:02 – Bone Stimulator Options29:20 – Risks of Bone Medications33:50 – Considering Osteoporosis Treatment34:03 – Medication vs Natural Approach36:55 – Vitamin D and Vitamin K39:55 – Calcium Myths Explained42:27 – Iodine Contrast Considerations45:49 – Where to Find Dr. Ben47:22 – Podcast Outro47:42 – Final Takeaways & Dr. Eric's Closing ThoughtsAbout Dr. Ben Weitz: Dr. Ben Weitz is a Certified Sports Chiropractor and Functional Medicine practitioner for more than 35 years and he has worked with professional sports teams.  He wrote a book in 1998, “The Back Relief Book”, and has published several papers on the prevention of injuries in weight training Free resources for your thyroid health Get your FREE Thyroid and Immune Health Restoration Action Points Checklist at SaveMyThyroidChecklist.com High-Quality Nutritional Supplements For Hyperthyroidism and Hashimoto' s Have you checked out my new ThyroSave supplement line? What if chronic inflammation, mold exposure, or unresolved emotional stress were silently accelerating osteoporosis or osteopenia? In this eye-opening episode, functional bone health expert Debi Robinson sits down with Dr. Kelly McCann, a leading functional MD and environmental medicine specialist, to uncover the hidden triggers behind bone loss that most women never hear about.Dr. McCann explains how mast cell activation (MCAS), mold toxicity, and environmental chemicals can weaken bones, disrupt hormones, and fuel chronic inflammation. Together, she and Debi explore the deeper terrain of bone health—how your immune system, nervous system, and even emotional experiences shape your risk for osteoporosis and osteopenia. This episode goes far beyond calcium and vitamin D. It's about understanding the environmental, biochemical, and emotional roots of bone loss so you can build strong, resilient bones for life. What You'll LearnHow mast cell activation (MCAS) contributes to inflammation that accelerates bone lossThe link between mold exposure, toxins, and the development of osteoporosis or osteopeniaWhy your symptoms may be communication, not malfunction, especially when it comes to bone healthHow emotional stress, trauma, and dysregulation of the nervous system can weaken bonesPractical, actionable ways to reduce toxic load and support bone densityHow to create balance physically, emotionally, and energetically to strengthen your bones from the inside outAction Steps Audit your environment: Look for hidden mold, water damage, or chemical exposures that may be fueling inflammation and bone loss.Clean up your kitchen: Swap non-stick pans for stainless steel, cast iron, or ceramic to reduce toxin exposure that affects bone health.Hydrate and nourish: Drink filtered water and build meals around whole, anti-inflammatory foods to support osteoporosis and osteopenia.Reduce daily toxic load: Avoid synthetic fragrances, plastic bottles, and harsh cleaners that may disrupt hormones and bone density.Calm your stress response: Use breathwork, meditation, or gentle yoga to regulate your nervous system and protect your bones.Seek functional support: Work with a practitioner if you suspect mold toxicity, MCAS, or chronic inflammation impacting your bones.Resources & LinksLearn more about Dr. Kelly McCann: The Spring CenterListen to more episodes of the Stronger Bones Lifestyle PodcastStrengthen from the inside out: Healthy Gut, Healthy Bones ProgramVisit debirobinson.com for resources and upcoming eventsDebi's TakeawayBone health is about much more than nutrients—it's about your environment, your stress levels, and how your body communicates with you.As Dr. McCann reminds us, inflammation, toxins, and emotional stress can erode bone strength just as powerfully as nutritional deficiencies. PAI-1 Deficiency Protects Aging Female Mice from Muscle and Bone Loss

Aging-US

BUFFALO, NY — October 23, 2025 — A new #research paper was #published in Volume 17, Issue 9 of Aging-US on September 11, 2025, titled “Roles of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 in aging-related muscle and bone loss in mice.” In this study led by first author Takashi Ohira and corresponding author Hiroshi Kaji from Kindai University Faculty of Medicine, researchers found that female mice lacking the gene for plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) were protected from age-related muscle weakness and bone thinning. This suggests that PAI-1 could be a potential target for future treatments to reduce frailty in aging populations. As the global population continues to age, more people are affected by conditions such as sarcopenia and osteoporosis. These disorders involve the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and bone density, leading to reduced mobility, a greater risk of falls, and a lower quality of life. To investigate the role of PAI-1 in aging, researchers compared young (6-month-old) and aged (24-month-old) male and female mice, with and without the PAI-1 gene. They found that PAI-1 levels increased with age in both sexes. However, only female mice lacking the PAI-1 gene experienced a significant reduction in age-related muscle and bone loss. Female mice without PAI-1 maintained stronger grip strength and greater muscle mass in their lower limbs. They also showed less cortical bone loss in their femurs and tibias. In contrast, male mice did not experience the same benefits, despite also showing increased levels of PAI-1 with age. These results suggest that PAI-1 contributes to aging-related decline in a sex-specific manner. “The present study found that lower limb muscle mass, gastrocnemius and soleus muscle tissue weights, and grip strength were significantly lower in 24-month-old male and female wild-type mice than in their 6-month-old counterparts.” PAI-1 plays key roles in blood clotting, inflammation, and cellular senescence—a process in which aging cells release harmful molecules that affect nearby tissues. One of these molecules, interleukin-6 (IL-6), is a major driver of inflammation. The researchers found that aged female mice lacking PAI-1 had lower IL-6 levels in both muscle and blood, suggesting that PAI-1 may contribute to muscle and bone loss by promoting inflammation. These protective effects were also not associated with changes in muscle protein turnover or reductions in fibrous tissue, reinforcing the idea that PAI-1's impact is likely driven by inflammatory signaling. This study highlights PAI-1 as a promising therapeutic target for slowing or preventing age-related declines in muscle and bone health, particularly in women. Since postmenopausal women are especially vulnerable to osteoporosis and frailty, a better understanding of how PAI-1 contributes to aging could lead to new strategies for maintaining strength and mobility in later life. Further research is needed to explore how PAI-1 interacts with other age-related biological changes and why its effects differ between sexes. Story at-a-glance Bone issues were once seen only among the elderly, but now young adults are also developing osteopenia, stress fractures, arthritis, and other signs of skeletal decline Poor sleep, chronic stress, sedentary habits, ultraprocessed diets, and harmful habits like smoking and alcohol use are key drivers behind the rising rates of bone loss in younger populations Calcium, vitamin D, magnesium, and vitamin K2 are all essential for bone health. Without proper balance, calcium can't be absorbed, used effectively, or kept out of arteries Diets high in ultraprocessed foods strip the body of key nutrients and promote inflammation. Excess iron also damages bone cells and increases fracture risk Weight-bearing exercises like resistance training, walking, and jumping stimulate bone growth and strengthen the skeletal structure at the molecular level

Dr. Evan Hirsch is a world-renowned fatigue expert and the creator of the EnergyMD Method, a clinically proven 4-step process to naturally resolve chronic fatigue and long COVID. In this deeply important conversation, we uncover how chronic fatigue, long COVID, and yes—bone loss—are all connected. If you've been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia and you're exhausted, overwhelmed, or scared of breaking a bone, this one's for you. These aren't isolated issues. They're symptoms of deeper dysfunction in the body. Evan and I walk through what I always talk about—the root causes—and why the traditional approach to bone health is flat-out missing the mark.We talk about toxins. We talk about trauma. We talk about the nervous system. And we talk about how your bones are not weak—they're depleted. From heavy metals to hormone disruptors to emotional patterns you inherited, this episode is going to open your eyes. If you're trying to take back control of your body and your bones, you'll want to hear how Evan's method has helped thousands of people get their energy back and rebuild from the inside out. Because bone health isn't just about density—it's about strength, quality, and resilience. And it starts here.Key TakeawaysThe Toxic 5 Framework – Dr. Hirsch breaks down how hidden toxins—like mold, metals, and chronic infections—are silently wrecking your bones and your energy.Bone Loss and Toxic Burden – Your bones are doing their best to protect you. When they break down, they're releasing toxins stored over decades. It's not a defect—it's survival. Why Lab Tests Often Miss the Mark – Just because your labs say "normal" doesn't mean your body is. If you're tired, inflamed, and losing bone, something deeper is going on.The 4-Step EnergyMD Process – We walk through Evan's practical approach: identify your causes, restore what's missing, prep your detox channels, and remove the junk. The Nervous System-Bone Health Connection – You can't rebuild a body that feels unsafe. Nervous system dysregulation blocks healing—even when you're doing everything else "right."You're Not Broken—You're Depleted – This is not your fault. And it's not yours forever. You can rebuild stronger bones and reclaim your energy—naturally, and on your terms.Where to Find Our GuestDr. Evan Hirsch's Website: http://www.energymdmethod.comFREE Facebook Group: http://energymdmethod.com/fbgroupDr. Hirsch's Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrEvanHirsch/Dr. Hirsch's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/evanhirschmd/Links & ResourcesStronger Bones Lifestyle CommunityJoin a supportive space to strengthen your bones naturally with live sessions and masterclasses. In this episode of the Optimal Body Podcast, Doc Jen and Doctor Dom, both doctors of physical therapy, explore the benefits and drawbacks of whole body vibration plates. They discuss claims about these devices enhancing muscle gain, weight loss, and bone health, while emphasizing the need for critical evaluation of research. The conversation highlights the importance of balance and proprioception, especially as we age, and the sensory benefits of being barefoot. They caution against potential negative side effects of prolonged use and conclude that vibration plates can complement, but not replace, traditional strength training and rehabilitation exercises.
