Next year I plan to do the Canning Stock Route. I think I'm going to go Tagalong with Jed Currey from Explore WA 4WD Adventures. So in this episode I pick his brains on what to expect and how to plan. It's a long episode and we talk about a lot of elements of traversing the Canning. I hope you enjoy it like I did talking to Jed.By the way, no discounts, deals or payments were exchanged for any part of this episode.  No matter how you want to drive the Canning there will be some info to take away in this episode.Tagalongs are not for everyone, but I've done a few now and by and large I have enjoyed them heaps and found them an easy way to drive areas I'm not familiar with. That's probably why I speak about them favourably.Want to contact me? Got an idea for a podcast? Are you an expert at something? Lets talk.andy@4wdtribe.com.au

Dr Kate Lemming, OAM is an expedition cyclist. She cycled more than twice the Earth's circumference, and completed journeys on all seven continents.   Kate has many incredible firsts and feats to her name:  She was the first woman to cycle across Russia unsupported, the first person to cycle an unbroken line from Africa's most westerly to its most easterly point, the first person to cycle the entire Namibian coastline. She's cycled around and across Australia and was the first woman to cycle the Canning Stock Route.   Kate's latest challenge, Breaking the Cycle South Pole, will result in the first bicycle crossing of the Antarctic continent via the South Pole (2023).   There's more to Kate's story than doing epic bike trips in far flung corners of the globe! Previously a teacher, Kate includes a humanitarian side to all of her expeditions and has established a platform called: Breaking the Cycle Education, which aims to help prepare our future leaders to make informed decisions to create a better world.  Earlier in the year, Kate was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her services to adventure sport and just a couple of weeks ago she received the Australian Geographic Society's Spirit of Adventure award.  Kate and I talk about growing up in rural WA, her first expedition across Russia, how she comes up with ideas for her expeditions, her humanitarian work, her recent cycle from East to West of Australia, how she funds and pulls these trips together and her advice for those with an adventurous soul.   Kate is nothing short of incredible. I loved getting to know her. And you will too! Kate has cycled a distance greater than twice around the world at the Equator. On August 16th 2010 she became the first person to cycle an unbroken line from Africa’s most westerly to its most easterly points; from Pointe des Almadies, Senegal to Cape Hafun, Puntland, Somalia. Cycling 22,040 km over ten months, Kate’s Breaking the Cycle in Africa Expedition was not only a physical quest but an odyssey to highlight the development needs and activities of war-torn and poverty-stricken nations. Cycling through twenty countries, Kate aimed to find out what is being done to give a ‘leg up’ rather than a ‘hand out’ – to shine a positive light on the issues, cultures and geography of Africa. Kate has two earlier world firsts under her belt – the Trans-Siberian Cycle Expedition (1993) when she became the first woman to cycle across the new Russia unsupported (aiding the children of Chernobyl), and the 25,000km Great Australian Cycle Expedition (2004/05) which included the first bicycle crossing of the Canning Stock Route by a woman. In June 2019, Kate completed another original expedition when she became the first person to cycle the entire Namibian coastline, a 1621km sand cycling expedition from the mouth of the Kunene River on the Angolan border to the Orange River mouth on the South African border. Kate’s latest challenge, Breaking the Cycle South Pole, will result in the first bicycle crossing of the Antarctic continent via the South Pole (2020). The Breaking the Cycle education programme aims to help prepare our future leaders to make informed decisions to create a better world. Students across the globe can follow her preparatory activities and Antarctic expedition and partake in the Breaking the Cycle Education learning modules and lessons with the end goals of creating their own projects. Between 1,500 and 2,000 a year do the Canning Stock Route.  What is there to see and what is there to do when travelling the CSR. We talk with Canning Stock Route expert, Phil Binachi about the activities and attractions on the stock route. The dune systems are an amazing site and an amazing driving experience.  There is a large amount of aboriginal art some of which is incredibly old.  There are of course, the wells and a number of graves. We discuss the work of Track Care and how they are working to maintain the tracks.  Phil talks about how the 4 wheel drivers are working together with conservationalists to ensure ongoing access to the tracks.  We discuss the concept of 4WD Tourism and the effect that it has on the economy of Australia as a whole and for rural towns in particular.  We talk about the access to the Canning Stock Route.  What parts are open and which parts are effected by the weather.  We answer the big question - how long should you take to do the Canning Stock Route and which way should you travel the Canning? North to South or South to North, which way should you go?  Phil talks about where you can get your repairs done, which is a bit factor in travelling the Canning.  It is 1,800kms and there is a high chance of vehicle damage, so thinking about repairs is an important part of doing the Canning.

Phil Bianchi is a historian and 4 wheel driver who has documented a lot of history of the Canning Stock Route and he has driven the route many times.  From Wiluna to Halls Creek, it runs 1850 kms and was first surveyed in 1906. We discuss Alfred Canning and his initial trip to survey the Canning Stock Route and the expedition to build the stock route. The history of the Canning Stock Route is fascinating, with murders, sabotage,Beef barons and a Royal Commission.  We talk about the initial survey and the Royal Commission that followed.  Some of the documents from these early times are still locked up in Government Departments. In 1908, Canning started construction creating a lot of issues with the local Aboriginals.  This is a fascinating discussion about the history of this iconic 4 wheel drive track.
