Are we misreading what it means to build something that lasts? In this episode, we sit down with the former founder of Fave & KFit, Chen Chow, who's walked through fire: broke, lost, doubted—but never boring. From hustling with broken English to pitching investors with nothing but brutal honesty, their story punches right through the clichés. We talk about knowing when to fight for your startup and when to bury it with dignity. About staying real when everyone's faking it. About why sometimes, the best kind of help is the one that shows up quietly, without fanfare. You'll hear the unfiltered truth on fundraising, founders burning out, and why Malaysia's startup scene still feels like it's waiting to grow up. We also dive into AI, shifting work culture, and why Gen Z just isn't built for 9-to-5 obedience. We've all heard politicians talk about helping people, but what happens when someone actually means it? Dr. Michael Jeyakumar isn't your typical politician. He's not slick, not hungry for power, and definitely not here to sell you a dream. In fact, he stepped away from the noise because he couldn't stand how broken the system is.. and how comfortable we've all become living in it. In this episode, we talk about the messiness of politics in Malaysia. The lies we tell ourselves about progress. The strange obsession our leaders have with looking rich while the country crumbles quietly in the background. But it's not all doom. We also talk about hope; real, gritty, imperfect hope. The kind that lives in ordinary people doing quiet things. This one's not for people who love the status quo. It's for the ones who know something's off, and are ready to think about what comes next. Malaysia has so much potential - but what's holding it back? Ex-Perdana Petroleum MD Shamsul Saad and Khoo Hsu Chuang get real about the Malay mindset, education, and the bigger forces shaping the country's future. They talk about how culture and government policies play a role in success (or lack of it) and why critical thinking is a game-changer in today's digital world. But it isn't just about education. They get into leadership, economic growth, and why shaking things up is long overdue. Automation is changing jobs, governance feels stuck in mediocrity, and bold leadership is needed to push Malaysia forward. They even compare Malaysia's struggles with the U.S., showing how deeply rooted interests can hold progress back. Looking back at Malaysia's golden era in the 70s, they discuss how colonial history shaped the way people think and why the country needs a stronger sense of purpose. Inequality, talent, creativity—these things matter, and real change won't happen without the right leadership. At the end of the day, it's about breaking free from old mindsets and surrounding yourself with the right people to make real progress. #Movies #Hollywood #Racism #Chinese #Entertainment Movie Producers Rachel Tan & Dan Mark - How Chinese Conquer Racism, Prejudice in Hollywood, USA Is it a case of ‘from the frying pan into the fire'? Rachel Tan, a Malaysian ex-beauty queen, lawyer and model and her husband Dan Mark, also a lawyer of Chinese origin, found themselves in America well over a decade ago, after having left their respective homelands to escape racism and prejudice .. only to find America as racist and prejudiced as their own homelands. However, the question at hand is whether America, whose own success was largely borne from immigrants, is still the land of opportunity. Especially when the industry in question is Entertainment, notoriously one of the most competitive and difficult to conquer. Some facts to ponder (extracted from King Street Pictures' website): ASIAN AMERICANS IN FILM AND TELEVISION - According to the MPAA, Asians had the highest rate of moviegoing among all ethnic groups in the U.S. in 2016. - The U.S. Asian population grew 72% between 2000 and 2015, the fastest of any ethnic group. - Asians will be the largest immigrant group in the U.S. by 2055. - In terms of buying power, Asian households earn 36% more than others, and 13.4% of Asian households will earn more than $200,000 in 2019 Despite this, according to a USC Annenberg study of the top 100 films of 2017, only 4.8% featured a character of Asian descent with a speaking role. Eddin Khoo is a journalist, historian, author and poet. But perhaps his biggest contribution to society is his tireless work in protecting Malaysia's traditional performing arts like the Wayang Kulit and Mak Yong, through his cultural organisation, Pusaka. He rightly points out that Malaysia is a cosmopolis of races, cultures and traditions with a history older than most countries in the region. But its importance has been systematically erased in the interests of political self-preservation. This is his story, in his own words. This health-related podcast, like my earlier one on cancer with Dr Teo Soo Hwang (see link below) is also a personal one, as I have lost a number of friends and close acquaintances to heart disease in recent months. In some cases, the deaths were shocking, since they happened to seemingly healthy, fit and well-adjusted people. Not at all – at least superficially – that fell within the definition of ‘high-risk'. I resolved to attempt to better understand the Whys and Wherefores of heart disease, which meant there was only one person I could speak with: Dr. Suren Thuraisingham, an old family friend from back home in Penang. Dr. Thuraisingham is a very experienced and highly respected cardiologist, having practised medicine in this field since 1990. He very kindly agreed to answer my questions about why even young and seemingly healthy people are dropping dead from heart attacks, among a whole host of related issues, including whether a link exists between Covid vaccinations and heart diseases. Dwi Emas' Anne Tham - From Tuition Teacher to Education Entrepreneur Anne Tham could have been any one of us. The only difference is that she took the plunge. To try and make a difference. Otherwise she would have remained a tuition teacher, griping at the system's many flaws, like so many other Malaysians. Instead, she is today the head of a number of schools trying to make a difference, fully aware that an education – a proper one – is the key to unlocking a better future. Kavin Jay – Comedians, Malaysia's REAL Journalists Kavin Jay is one of Malaysia's funniest men, recognised as such by the Netflix special he was invited to record in 2018, titled ‘Everybody Calm Down'. He is also one of Malaysia's most original and ‘real' comedians, driven to his art by a very unique set of circumstances. Here, he talks to Chuang about his journey to comedy, evolving along the way to become a true storyteller, much akin to a journalist, though often braver – and definitely funnier.
