In the first episode of RaboTalk Growing our Future's new Catchment Catch-Ups series, host Blake Holgate sits down with Thriving Southland Project Lead, Richard Kyte to explore how farmer-led catchment groups are creating practical, locally driven solutions for some of the biggest challenges facing New Zealand farming today. From improving water quality and managing sediment, to building climate resilience and strengthening farm profitability, Richard shares why localised science, peer-to-peer learning and voluntary community action are so powerful. Featuring insights from New Zealand's largest catchment collective, this episode is a valuable listen for farmers and growers wanting real-world ideas, optimism and inspiration from people making a difference on the ground.Like what you've heard? Follow our podcast for more great content.Show Notes:From the Lake District to Southland CollectiveRichard shares his background moving from mixed farming in the UK to the New Zealand dairy sector and his extension work with DairyNZ. Now leading Thriving Southland, he helps provide 37 independent catchment groups with the information and funding resources they need to own and drive their own environmental projects. The Power of Localised ScienceGeneric environmental rules often miss the mark, so Thriving Southland focuses on sub-catchments. Richard explains how using radiometric data to understand specific soil and water dynamics helped one community identify mobile soils as the root cause of an E. coli issue, allowing them to precisely target their sediment management and maximise their return on investment.Integrating Water Quality and Climate ResilienceWhile greenhouse gas emissions can feel like a harder sell on a day-to-day basis, Richard emphasises that climate resilience, farm profitability, and water quality are completely interlinked. Projects like Carbon Neutral Dipton allow sheep, beef, and dairy farmers to collaborate on emissions mitigations and land use optimisation without separate legislative mandates. The Extension Model and Peer LearningThe historic success of New Zealand agriculture relies on farmers talking to farmers. Catchment groups foster this extension model, allowing early adopters to pave the way while others observe and catch up. This peer-to-peer approach builds genuine confidence and drives world leading change at a manageable pace. The Value of a Cheese RollBuilding wide community engagement is less about rigid dictation and more about social connection. Richard notes that the real wins often happen over a cup of tea and a cheese roll, providing a vital social wellness forum for isolated farmers to realise they are not facing seasonal or regulatory challenges alone.Final Advice: Look Back to Move ForwardRichard encourages any farmer curious about their local catchment group to simply put their head in the door without fear of a heavy commitment. True progress is voluntary and takes time. By reflecting on how far practices like winter grazing have transformed the Southland landscape over the last decade, farmers can find the optimism needed to face today's challenges.

In this episode of RaboTalk's Growing Our Future, Katie talks with North Canterbury farmer Ben Ensor, chair of the Hurunui District Landcare Group, about how farmer‑led catchment groups are helping rural communities make environmental change with confidence.Drawing on a decade of hands‑on experience, Ben explains the role of Catchment Communities Aotearoa in connecting more than 200 catchment groups nationwide, sharing knowledge, and giving farmers a stronger collective voice.Like what you've heard? Follow our podcast for more great content.Show Notes:In this episode, Katie speaks with North Canterbury farmer, and chair of the Hurunui District Landcare Group, Ben Ensor, about the role of catchment groups and the work of Catchment Communities Aotearoa (CCA).Ben shares insights from his experience farming in Cheviot and his involvement in catchment groups over the past decade. The conversation explores how farmer-led collaboration is helping rural communities respond to environmental expectations, build confidence, and create meaningful change on the ground.Farming in North CanterburyBen farms 1,400 hectares of hill country in Cheviot with his wife and daughter. Their sheep and beef operation runs Quarter-bred ewes and Angus cattle, with additional irrigated finishing land for livestock. While the farm is busy producing quality meat and livestock, Ben has also spent the past ten years heavily involved in catchment group initiatives that support environmental improvements and farmer collaboration. How Catchment Groups BeganBen's involvement began with the Hurunui District Landcare Group, which formed around a decade ago in response to major regulatory changes affecting local farmers. Those changes highlighted the need for farmers to have a stronger voice in environmental discussions and policy decisions.Catchment groups provided a platform for farmers to share their stories, communicate the good work already happening on farms, and better understand their environmental impacts. Over time, similar groups formed across New Zealand, leading to the creation of Catchment Communities Aotearoa to represent them nationally. What Catchment Communities Aotearoa DoesCCA acts as a national body connecting catchment groups and giving them a stronger collective voice. Today the organisation represents around 220 catchment groups covering approximately 12 million hectares across New Zealand.Rather than directing how individual groups operate, CCA focuses on supporting them through coordination, sharing resources, and helping connect communities facing similar challenges. This national platform also allows catchment groups to engage more effectively with government, regional councils, and other stakeholders.Supporting Farmers and Building ConfidenceOne of the biggest impacts of catchment groups has been improving farmer confidence. Over recent years, farmers have faced increasing environmental regulation, social pressure, and uncertainty about what changes were required on their farms.Catchment groups bring communities together to better understand environmental expectations, explore solutions, and support each other through change. This collaborative approach helps farmers take practical action such as improving riparian management, planting, fencing waterways, or establishing wetlands. While environmental improvements like water quality take time to measure, Ben says the visible progress in on-farm actions and community engagement has already been significant.Looking Ahead for Catchment GroupsCatchment groups have grown rapidly, but they are entering a new phase. Some government funding that helped establish groups during the COVID recovery period is reducing, meaning groups must adapt to operate with more sustainable funding models.Despite these challenges, Ben believes catchment groups remain in a strong position because they are built on community leadership. Their grassroots approach ensures solutions are locally relevant and widely supported.Key TakeawayFor Ben, success in the coming years will mean catchment groups being recognised as trusted partners in environmental improvement. By empowering farmers and communities to work together, catchment groups have the potential to deliver lasting environmental progress while maintaining strong, resilient farming businesses.

“Capturing rainwater and letting it make its way back into earth is really the most sustainable thing you can do with the water on the property, and a good way to guarantee water supply in a more sustainable way.” Do you know that an inch of rain on a 1,000 sq/ft roof topcan collect 600 gallons of water? Jesse Froehlich Savou, a native of Davis, CA native, thinks everyone should be able to harvest rainwater, so she set out to make that possible, founding BlueBarrel in 2012. Jesse developed her first catchment system in 2010 as an AmeriCorps project with Conservation Corps North Bay at the Indian Valley Organic Farm & Garden located in Novato, CA. Her assignment was to build a 1,500 gallon rainwater catchment system with a budget of only $1,000. She and project partner John came up with what ended up being the prototype for the BlueBarrel System, using 22 food-grade plastic barrels and associated hardware in a narrow corridor next to the farm's greenhouse. nThe system immediately proved workable, and Jesse decided to install one at her home… And then another… And then a third! With a few tweaks each time, Jesse refined what became known as the BlueBarrel Rainwater Catchment System™—now available nationwide as BlueBarrel's DIY RainKit™ for you to install at your own place. BlueBarrel (https://www.bluebarrelsystems.com/) now offers the tools and resources for successful home-installation experiences for rainwater harvesters everywhere!

30: The Demand for Soil Carbon Is on The Rise with Louisa Kiely

The catastrophic consequences of global climate change have gone on way too far. Meanwhile, the demand for carbon is on the rise, and it's a market that's predicted to grow There is no sign of slowing down, and if continues to be credited a number of new grant programs could benefit farmers all over the country. Proper soil carbon management can not only retain more water, but can also restore the landscape, increase your yield, and give you access to necessary resources. Let's dig deeper into this as Louisa Kiely shares with us everything we need to know about carbon farming.   Who is Louisa Kiely? Louisa, Director of  Carbon Farmers of Australia, obtained her Bachelor of Agricultural Economics from the University of New England. She worked in the market research industry as a field supervisor while bringing up her 3 children. Together with her husband Michael, in 1991-2003 Louisa established and grew a city-based marketing agency from zero to 55 employees. In this business, she was Director and General Manager of Boomerang! Integrated Marketing & Advertising. Intent on following her first choice of career, she studied for the Advanced Diploma of Farm Management at Sydney University (Orange), trained in Holistic Management, and from 1998 to 2017 she was a woolgrower in the Wellington NSW district, growing fine Merino Wool. She was selected by the Central Western Catchment Management Authority as one of 10 highly innovative landholders in the Catchment, to be trained in farm planning and soil restoration. Through this training, she and Michael became convinced that soil carbon could solve many agricultural, environmental, and climate change problems. She co-founded the Carbon Coalition Against Global Warming in February 2006 to lobby for the right of Australian landholders to trade on the emissions offset market the credits they can earn by sequestering carbon in their soils. She has since traveled throughout Australia and internationally meeting scientists and farmers and spreading the word about Carbon Farming. She was invited to be a delegate at a Climate Change and Conservation Farming Conference in LaFayette, Indiana, organised by the UN Food & Agriculture Organisation. She was also a delegate at the National Carbon Offset Coalition Conference in Bozeman, Montana. She is co-founder of Carbon Farmers of Australia Pty Ltd (CFA). CFA also published the world's first Carbon Farming Handbook. Seeking to build bridges with the scientific community, she organised two Soil C Summits between Scientists and Farmers, in Dubbo and Orange NSW. And as co-founder of CFA, she organised and ran the world's first Carbon Farming Conference & Expo in November 2007. In 2019 the 9th National Carbon Farming Conference & Expo, the biggest yet with delegates from every state in Australia and from all over the world, was held. She developed the “CarbonCredited™” brand for wool and recruited woolgrowers into this emissions reduction program. Louisa has been recognized for her work and was chosen as runner up in the 2008 NSW Rural Woman of the Year. She has also sat on the board of the Regional Development Australia Committee – Orana Region. This intergovernmental committee was set up to ensure the future strength and development in rural and regional Australia. As director of Carbon Farmers of Australia Pty Ltd, she was a part of a consortium of 3 companies that developed the first Soil Carbon Methodology submitted to the Carbon Farming Initiative process. Carbon Farmers of Australia also offers farm-ready training in Carbon Farming and Trading. ---------- Website: https://carbonfarmersofaustralia.com.au/   Dig Deeper Club: https://soillearningcenter.com/digdeeper See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sarahs Country
Leave it to the catchment communities to achieve freshwater outcomes. Rangitikei farmers meet the Ministry for the Environment

How do those tasked with implementing environmental policy best engage with farmers to come up with solutions that are best for the land and are fit for purpose? Ministry for the Environment has partnered with Sarah's Country to hit the road across the lower North Island in late 2021 to get out of Wellington and onto the farm to hear & see directly from farmers. In this third and final episode as part of the three-part series, Sarah Perriam takes Director of Policy Implementation & Delivery, Sara Clarke, meets Rangitikei Rivers Catchment Collective Chair and three-generation farmer, Roger Dalrymple along with dairy farmer, Greg Maughan.  Sara is joined by her colleague, Gin Loughnan, Manager of the Climate & Water Agriculture team at the Ministry for the Environment who is keen to work together with catchment groups to ensure that freshwater farm plans are workable and avoid duplication.   "The first thing we have to do is get farmers to understand why they are putting their environment plans on paper when bankers will tell you we can't get farmers to pull together farm budgets yet. It's a massive leap!" stresses Roger Dalrymple, Waitatapia Farming TOP 10 things in THIS EPISODE Sara Clarke & Gin Loughnan sits down with the Rangitikei farmers to discuss: 1. Over 300 farmers have joined the sub-catchment groups of the Rangitikei Rivers Catchment Collective "which will tell you that if you give farmers the challenge they will be empowered to create the solutions" 2. Farmers need environmental policy guidance that is apolitical and doesn't change between government terms where the pathway doesn't change on them. 3. The narrative that New Zealand farmers are doing it all wrong and portraying our practices as third-world when dairy farmer, Greg Maughan was working in Indonesia and reading this message looking at polluted waterways. 4. Gin asks how the government can support the community ownership of the solution around freshwater quality. 5. Roger's experience with dealing with a spectrum of farmers to bring them along and to educate them on where the changes need to happen takes time, more collaborative science and improved connectivity.  6. Can freshwater farm plans be justifying what farmers are already doing and change the conversation around proving the good work than it being led as a government, box-ticking exercise?  7. Roger & Greg explain that community catchments only work for 3-6 months of the year for farmers as calving, lambing, shearing, harvesting and weaning takes their focus and therefore the milestones to achieve outcomes need to be set at a time that works with the farming calendar. 8. Sustainable Land Use Initiative (SLUI) under Horizon District Council cost between $12-$14,000/per farm that was funded by Horizon for erosion control and soil mapping are great management tools. 9. Roger advises against the integrated environmental farm plan being digital-only due to internet accessibility and the digital literacy of farmers but may lead to catchment support to help all farmers to get farm environment plans.   10. Gin & Sara want to know what role industry bodies are playing in supporting farmers. Roger points out that the industry groups don't have the time to bring farmers along on the journey because the government's policy consultation timeframes are too tight.    links Learn more about Freshwater Farm Plans   This episode is the first in a new weekly series for 2022 on Sarah's Country 'Table Swap' out discussing the big issues facing New Zealand's primary sector around farmers' kitchen tables working on ways to move forward collectively.   WIN ONE OF THREE PREMIUM PASSES TO THE FARMAX CONFERENCE (9th & 10th March 2022) complete with a Farmax subscription (valued at $200)!
