In the lead-up to the year-end monsoon season, National water agency PUB launched its first campaign aimed at encouraging the public to be ready for floods amid erratic weather and more intense storms caused by climate change. As part of its mnemonic Flash campaign, the public is advised to follow these tips: • Follow PUB flood alerts • Learn how to be flood-ready • Avoid flooded areas • Share PUB flood updates • Help others where possible The agency has also stepped up checks across the island to make sure that public drains are not blocked and can carry storm water effectively. This is especially so for key buildings and flood-prone areas. On this episode of Morning Shot, Muhd Zaki Mohamedzen, Principal Engineer at PUB's Catchment and Waterways Department shares his insights on PUB's efforts. In this episode, we are joined by Ben Harrison, Housing Sustainability Development Officer for Southend-On-Sea Council. Our second youngest guest and who is one of the key players in the award-winning retrofit home project we look at this episode. In this episode, we explore a former council house, now re-purchased by Southend-On-Sea Council. This is one of a number of homes being modernized and retrofitted to provide a more comfortable place to live, and that has a key role in helping reduce the cost of living for residents, and in decarbonising the council's housing stock. What is interesting about this house, is that this house has a much wider range of measures, and is subject to intense monitoring to measure the impact of the various technologies and solutions installed, than the other properties up for renewal. It's a pilot house to see what works, and what doesn't, see how technologies perform, how the house performs as a whole, and the next stage is to even have a family living in the property, to see how they get on with the new technologies. Additionally, the house is included in the Catchment to Coast project, part of a wider government program looking at flood risk and water resilience, which also led to a wide range of water-saving technologies also being introduced into the properties, as well as the design of exterior spaces to help manage rainwater in new and innovative ways during storm events. This is a fantastic project and one of national importance to help inform and show how we might be able to transition not just public housing, but also private properties, to bring the cost of living down, whilst also meeting our climate objectives, tackling water scarcity and reducing flooding. “Capturing rainwater and letting it make its way back into earth is really the most sustainable thing you can do with the water on the property, and a good way to guarantee water supply in a more sustainable way.” Do you know that an inch of rain on a 1,000 sq/ft roof topcan collect 600 gallons of water? Jesse Froehlich Savou, a native of Davis, CA native, thinks everyone should be able to harvest rainwater, so she set out to make that possible, founding BlueBarrel in 2012. Jesse developed her first catchment system in 2010 as an AmeriCorps project with Conservation Corps North Bay at the Indian Valley Organic Farm & Garden located in Novato, CA. Her assignment was to build a 1,500 gallon rainwater catchment system with a budget of only $1,000. She and project partner John came up with what ended up being the prototype for the BlueBarrel System, using 22 food-grade plastic barrels and associated hardware in a narrow corridor next to the farm's greenhouse. nThe system immediately proved workable, and Jesse decided to install one at her home… And then another… And then a third! With a few tweaks each time, Jesse refined what became known as the BlueBarrel Rainwater Catchment System™—now available nationwide as BlueBarrel's DIY RainKit™ for you to install at your own place. BlueBarrel (https://www.bluebarrelsystems.com/) now offers the tools and resources for successful home-installation experiences for rainwater harvesters everywhere!

"The urgent plan to restore our catchment is the only way to reduce flood heights in Lismore." John Corkill John Corkill was dismayed when he heard that the Nationals response to the devastating and expensive Lismore floods is to increase height of the existing flood levees that hold water out of the business district of central Lismore. The levee was called a lemon when it was first built and a lemon it has proved to be. Dr Corkill knows that money and planning would be better spent on planting and regenerating trees in the catchment of the entire flood area to reduce flood heights in Lismore. The catastrophic consequences of global climate change have gone on way too far. Meanwhile, the demand for carbon is on the rise, and it's a market that's predicted to grow There is no sign of slowing down, and if continues to be credited a number of new grant programs could benefit farmers all over the country. Proper soil carbon management can not only retain more water, but can also restore the landscape, increase your yield, and give you access to necessary resources. Let's dig deeper into this as Louisa Kiely shares with us everything we need to know about carbon farming. Who is Louisa Kiely? Louisa, Director of Carbon Farmers of Australia, obtained her Bachelor of Agricultural Economics from the University of New England. She worked in the market research industry as a field supervisor while bringing up her 3 children. Together with her husband Michael, in 1991-2003 Louisa established and grew a city-based marketing agency from zero to 55 employees. In this business, she was Director and General Manager of Boomerang! Integrated Marketing & Advertising. Intent on following her first choice of career, she studied for the Advanced Diploma of Farm Management at Sydney University (Orange), trained in Holistic Management, and from 1998 to 2017 she was a woolgrower in the Wellington NSW district, growing fine Merino Wool. She was selected by the Central Western Catchment Management Authority as one of 10 highly innovative landholders in the Catchment, to be trained in farm planning and soil restoration. Through this training, she and Michael became convinced that soil carbon could solve many agricultural, environmental, and climate change problems. She co-founded the Carbon Coalition Against Global Warming in February 2006 to lobby for the right of Australian landholders to trade on the emissions offset market the credits they can earn by sequestering carbon in their soils. She has since traveled throughout Australia and internationally meeting scientists and farmers and spreading the word about Carbon Farming. She was invited to be a delegate at a Climate Change and Conservation Farming Conference in LaFayette, Indiana, organised by the UN Food & Agriculture Organisation. She was also a delegate at the National Carbon Offset Coalition Conference in Bozeman, Montana. She is co-founder of Carbon Farmers of Australia Pty Ltd (CFA). CFA also published the world's first Carbon Farming Handbook. Seeking to build bridges with the scientific community, she organised two Soil C Summits between Scientists and Farmers, in Dubbo and Orange NSW. And as co-founder of CFA, she organised and ran the world's first Carbon Farming Conference & Expo in November 2007. In 2019 the 9th National Carbon Farming Conference & Expo, the biggest yet with delegates from every state in Australia and from all over the world, was held. She developed the “CarbonCredited™” brand for wool and recruited woolgrowers into this emissions reduction program. Louisa has been recognized for her work and was chosen as runner up in the 2008 NSW Rural Woman of the Year. She has also sat on the board of the Regional Development Australia Committee – Orana Region. This intergovernmental committee was set up to ensure the future strength and development in rural and regional Australia. As director of Carbon Farmers of Australia Pty Ltd, she was a part of a consortium of 3 companies that developed the first Soil Carbon Methodology submitted to the Carbon Farming Initiative process. Carbon Farmers of Australia also offers farm-ready training in Carbon Farming and Trading. ---------- Website: https://carbonfarmersofaustralia.com.au/ Dig Deeper Club: https://soillearningcenter.com/digdeeper See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How do those tasked with implementing environmental policy best engage with farmers to come up with solutions that are best for the land and are fit for purpose? Ministry for the Environment has partnered with Sarah's Country to hit the road across the lower North Island in late 2021 to get out of Wellington and onto the farm to hear & see directly from farmers. In this third and final episode as part of the three-part series, Sarah Perriam takes Director of Policy Implementation & Delivery, Sara Clarke, meets Rangitikei Rivers Catchment Collective Chair and three-generation farmer, Roger Dalrymple along with dairy farmer, Greg Maughan. Sara is joined by her colleague, Gin Loughnan, Manager of the Climate & Water Agriculture team at the Ministry for the Environment who is keen to work together with catchment groups to ensure that freshwater farm plans are workable and avoid duplication. "The first thing we have to do is get farmers to understand why they are putting their environment plans on paper when bankers will tell you we can't get farmers to pull together farm budgets yet. It's a massive leap!" stresses Roger Dalrymple, Waitatapia Farming TOP 10 things in THIS EPISODE Sara Clarke & Gin Loughnan sits down with the Rangitikei farmers to discuss: 1. Over 300 farmers have joined the sub-catchment groups of the Rangitikei Rivers Catchment Collective "which will tell you that if you give farmers the challenge they will be empowered to create the solutions" 2. Farmers need environmental policy guidance that is apolitical and doesn't change between government terms where the pathway doesn't change on them. 3. The narrative that New Zealand farmers are doing it all wrong and portraying our practices as third-world when dairy farmer, Greg Maughan was working in Indonesia and reading this message looking at polluted waterways. 4. Gin asks how the government can support the community ownership of the solution around freshwater quality. 5. Roger's experience with dealing with a spectrum of farmers to bring them along and to educate them on where the changes need to happen takes time, more collaborative science and improved connectivity. 6. Can freshwater farm plans be justifying what farmers are already doing and change the conversation around proving the good work than it being led as a government, box-ticking exercise? 7. Roger & Greg explain that community catchments only work for 3-6 months of the year for farmers as calving, lambing, shearing, harvesting and weaning takes their focus and therefore the milestones to achieve outcomes need to be set at a time that works with the farming calendar. 8. Sustainable Land Use Initiative (SLUI) under Horizon District Council cost between $12-$14,000/per farm that was funded by Horizon for erosion control and soil mapping are great management tools. 9. Roger advises against the integrated environmental farm plan being digital-only due to internet accessibility and the digital literacy of farmers but may lead to catchment support to help all farmers to get farm environment plans. 10. Gin & Sara want to know what role industry bodies are playing in supporting farmers. The stress created by “keeping up with the Joneses”. Introducing, a very funny and insightful Lynette Malcolm. Lynette is one of the top agents in the Upper North Shore of Sydney and knows her market better than anyone. Chris was sadly absent for this episode, but he wouldn't have had a chance to get a word in because Veronica and Lynette bounced off each other hilariously. In particular they covered: How home priorities change when kids finish school. Where the money flows to from the Upper North Shore. When renting before buying in a new area can be the right move. Why you shouldn't apologise when viewing a property multiple times. Is “happy wife, happy life” driving the vast majority of our property market? How our home is our castle and status drives many decisions. What can happen when you rush and buy the wrong home. Why you need to be careful when finding comparable sales data. How to position your offer to improve your chances of acceptance. In what circumstances will an offer never be accepted? This is such an enlightening episode into the dynamics of buying a home. https://chadwickrealestate.com.au/team/lynette-malcolm/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
