In this episode of FinTech Confidential's Leaders One on One series, Tedd Huff and Rodney Williams, co-founder and president of Solo Funds, tackle key topics impacting the fintech world. The conversation explores the challenges and opportunities within the industry, providing listeners with fresh insights into financial technology and the evolution of lending models. One of the central discussions revolves around the exodus of fintech founders. With many industry leaders leaving for other sectors, the conversation sheds light on the tough realities of fintech today. Increased regulatory scrutiny and a lack of investor enthusiasm are driving founders to seek opportunities outside the fintech space. Tedd and Rodney discuss what this means for the future of the industry and how remaining resilient is crucial for fintech entrepreneurs.A major theme is how Solo Funds is disrupting traditional lending models, particularly payday loans. By allowing borrowers to set their own loan terms, Solo Funds gives users control over their financial decisions. This borrower-first approach is a stark contrast to payday loans, which often come with high fees and rigid repayment schedules. By focusing on flexibility and transparency, Solo Funds is transforming the way underserved communities access financial resources.Another important topic is the role of transparency in building trust. The conversation highlights how Solo Funds provides borrowers with clear, upfront information on what others have paid for loans, ensuring users make informed decisions without hidden fees. This transparency not only increases borrower trust but also leads to better financial outcomes, including lower default rates. For fintech companies, transparency is presented as a key factor in earning user loyalty and reducing risk.A recurring issue in the fintech space is the challenge of regulatory compliance. Rodney and Tedd explore how fintechs often face unclear regulations, creating roadblocks for growth. They emphasize the importance of fintech companies educating regulators and working closely with them to create a framework that supports innovation while ensuring compliance. The conversation points out that navigating the legal landscape is one of the most significant challenges for fintech startups, making collaboration with regulatory bodies a necessity for long-term success. The episode also dives into the financial realities of launching a fintech company. Compliance and regulatory approval come with hefty costs, often in the millions, which can be a barrier for new entrants. For entrepreneurs looking to start a fintech business, understanding these hidden costs is essential. The discussion stresses that having financial backing and careful planning are critical for startups hoping to break into the competitive fintech market.A key highlight of the conversation is Solo Funds' status as a certified B Corporation, reflecting its commitment to social impact. Unlike profit-driven corporations, B Corps must meet high standards of social and environmental performance. This certification sets Solo Funds apart as a company focused on financial inclusion and empowering underserved communities. The conversation emphasizes how aligning business with a social mission can differentiate a company in a crowded fintech space. An intriguing part of the discussion focuses on how Solo Funds empowers borrowers to become lenders. The platform not only helps borrowers access funds but also enables them to transition into lenders themselves over time. This unique model promotes long-term financial independence and provides a sustainable solution for users. The conversation illustrates how this approach fosters a cycle of empowerment, positioning Solo Funds as a model for creating financial...

Alan Saunders and Zachary Smith discuss the latest surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers. Darnell Washington has played fewer snaps than both Connor Heyward and Rodney Williams as of late and it's drawn the attention of the fanbase and media alike. Drafted in the third round primarily for his blocking ability, the offensive line could sure use the help he'd be able to provide there if nothing else. Jeffrey Simmons presents a unique challenge for Mason Cole, Isaac Seumalo and James Daniels. Do they have a blueprint for how to handle him though, given their ability to keep Aaron Donald in check? How has the off-ball linebacking group of Cole Holcomb, Kwon Alexander and Elandon Roberts played compared to the position group in year's past? Should we see more of James Pierre and Elijah Riley in Minkah's absence? All this and more on today's Steelers Afternoon Drive! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

"Bleav in Steelers" hosts Ike Taylor and Mark Bergin discuss how the Pittsburgh Steelers are leading the AFC North division through the first five weeks of the season. The guys share their observations from the Steelers' 17-10 win against the Baltimore Ravens. Bergin credits Rodney Williams who stood out on special teams in the Steelers' win. Taylor and Bergin discuss whether the Steelers should start rookie cornerback Joey Porter Jr., whose interception helped propel the Steelers to a comeback win. Also, the guys talk about the impact Diontae Johnson should have on the team's offense. Johnson is due to return on Oct. 22 against the Los Angeles Rams. Taylor and Bergin also discuss the performance of running backs Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren. Bergin also questions why John Harbaugh went for it on fourth down late in the second quarter instead of kicking a field goal to try to go up 10 points. Bergin also wonders why the Steelers only had 10 players on the field during an illegal formation penalty late in the fourth quarter. The penalty gave Lamar Jackson and the Ravens offense the ball back with 49 seconds left instead of about 10. The guys also share why T.J. Watt is the NFL's best defensive player. Through the first five weeks of the season, Watt leads the NFL in sacks with eight. Last, the guys discuss the legacy of James Harrison, who says he does not deserve to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame. They debate whether the better pass-rushing duo is Harrison and LaMarr Woodley or Watt and Alex Highsmith. It's impressive when an entrepreneur builds a company from scratch that ultimately scales, but I think it is even more impressive when you can combine a strong social mission to a company that scales, as well. This is what Rodney and his Co-Founder, Travis Holoway, have built with SoLo Funds, a leading community finance platform focused on underserved communities. It's a marketplace where you can lend money to those who are looking to borrow. It's working, as the company has over 1.3M downloads and has surpassed 600K in loans funded and $300M in transaction value. As the only Black owned B Corp Fintech in the U.S. and Canada, the company is backed by a variety of investors including Rich Dennis' fund, New Voices and Serena Williams' fund, Serena Ventures. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * Advice for entrepreneurs of color on raising funding for their startup. * Rodney's background story including obtaining his MBA from Howard University and his time at Proctor & Gamble as a Brand Manager. * We break down the tech and use cases for LISNR, a leading ultrasonic data platform company that he co-founded. * All the details about SoLo Funds in terms of how the company came together and the impact that it is making. * The story of his recent TV appearance on the Peacock series called Founding in Color. * And so much more. SoLo was created to disinter-mediate the predatory payday lending system. Today, SoLo is one of the fastest growing fintech companies in the country.SoLo's story starts the way every SoLo request begins: with someone needing a hand. Co-founders Travis Holoway & Rodney Williams were noticing that family members, friends, and roommates were asking for financial help here and there, and they understood why. There weren't any fair, reputable options for small, short-term loans. They decided to create one by harnessing the power of community. SoLo was formed in 2018 to create a viable, non-predatory option for moments when life happens. SoLo tap's into the power of community and generosity to form an online safety net that is mutually beneficial to all of its members.Travis and Rodney know that SoLo is needed because they needed it. Our loved ones needed it. And they know that SoLo makes a difference because nearly 80% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck.Today, SoLo is driven too new heights, but grounded in the same hope and mission: to build a community that enables financial autonomy for all.Causeartist - Social Impact Venture Jobs board - Learn more---> Check out the Causeartist Partners here.---> Subscribe to the Causeartist Newsletter here.Listen to more Causeartist podcast shows hereFollow Grant on Twitter and LinkedInFollow Causeartist on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram

During COVID small businesses were hit hard and those owned by women, Black, Hispanic and Indigenous people even more so. In 2020 41% of Black businesses, 32% of Latino businesses, and 30% of women-owned businesses closed and of those that survived, 80% are now experiencing financial challenges. Amid financial instability and lack of cash flow, operating expenses have become the top financial challenge for small business and also for the people within underserved communities. Comcast NBCUniversal sought to find new solutions to this systemic challenge with their Financial Impact Challenge that identified and invested in HoneyComb Credit and SoLo Funds to provide lending alternatives that are equitable, empowering, and community-driven. Featuring: Antonia Dean, Rodney Williams and George Cook.
