In this powerful and eye-opening episode, world-renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Charlie Teo joins us to explore the most complex and misunderstood organ in the human body: the brain. From memory and movement to emotion and decision-making, our brains are truly super-computers—yet most of us know shockingly little about how to protect them. Dr. Teo sheds light on the current brain health crisis, revealing that dementia is now the leading cause of death for Australian women, and delves into the hidden dangers of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs)—often overlooked but with life-altering consequences. We explore how everyday habits—like chronic stress, screen time, poor diet, and social isolation—are quietly damaging our brain function. Dr. Teo also introduces Cingulum Health, his innovative brain clinic, offering cutting-edge tools like fMRI assessments and TMS therapy to personalise and transform brain care. Plus, we hear inspiring recovery stories about Owen Wright and others reminding us that healing is possible with cutting eyes software from Omniscent Key Takeaways: Brain health is in crisis—but it's not too late to act. TBIs can be subtle yet have long-term effects on mood, memory, and cognition. Daily lifestyle choices play a significant role in brain function and longevity. Cingulum Health is pioneering personalised brain care with impressive results. The future of medicine is brain-focused, proactive, and tailored to the individual.

Joining the podcast today is one of the world's best neurosurgeons Charlie Teo.Charlie had a 'tough love' type of childhood. He's always been a hard worker, and worked hard for everything that he's got in his life. Medicine wasn't always on the cards for Charlie. He got his black belt in karate and even started a motor mechanic apprenticeship before eventually 'bumbling and fumbling' his way into surgery! Charlie labels himself as a bit of a philistine, and of course, our teddy bear Gus wants to open up Charlie's mind to being comfortable in vulnerability and leaning into emotion.Charlie looks back on his life with a lot of self awareness of his strengths and also his weaknesses. In this chat we speak about: Charlie's regrets Bringing up children that he is proud of and wants to be around His non-conventional way into neurosurgery How he never 'played the game' The controversy that he faced What is in store for his future You can find more from Charlie here. You can now watch our podcasts on Youtube! As for all of these podcasts, Shaw and Partners have generously donated $10k to the charity of choice of each of our guests. We have a bonus episode for you this week as Di and Nicola sit down with two wonderful women, Marcella Zemanek and Sue-Ellan Vasiliou to hear about their stories from grief to giving. Marcella and Sue-Ellan both lost loved ones to brain cancer, and they're now passionate about raising money for brain cancer research and doing their part to support other families who are going through a similar journey. We want to let all our listeners know that one of the ways you can help raise money for this important cause is by getting your gear off and registering for The Sydney Skinny on March 17th. Marcella shares her story of what it was like when her husband, radio broadcaster and TV presenter, Stan Zemanek came home one day with the news that they'd discovered a brain tumour. He was told by his doctor at the time he'd have 6 weeks to live, but thanks to a surgery by Charlie Teo, he was able to have another 15 months and spend quality time with his family, and meet his new granddaughter. We then hear from Sue-Ellan who lost her beautiful 6-year-old daughter Alegra to brain cancer in 2017, just 10 months after diagnosis. Sue-Ellan talks about how painful it was, and still is, but how you learn new ways to manage the grief, and in Sue-Ellan's own words “she's worth all the pain”. After losing Alegra, Sue-Ellan setup Little Legs Foundation which has raised over $2 million so far for brain cancer research. If you want to hear a heartfelt and incredibly inspiring conversation with two women who have lost so much, but have chosen to keep living in hope and do all they can to give back to others, then please tune in to this episode. And even better, if you live in Sydney, come and bare all to beat brain cancer with our very own Nicola at The Sydney Skinny on March 17th. Charlie Teo is an inspirational neurosurgeon who has saved & extended thousands of lives operating on the brain tumours that were deemed by so many of his peers as ‘inoperable'.The medical board & many Australian media sources have taken it upon themselves to persecute Charlie for his work & as a result he is no longer able to operate in Australia. Having raised over $50M for brain cancer research through his own foundation, whilst still flying around the world in hopes to help the patients who's lives depend on it, Charlie is fighting for what he believes in: a simple ethos that has defined his work from the moment it began... to treat his patients like they are his own family. An honest conversation that cuts through the bullshit to deliver the truth of Charlie Teo's story, whilst exploring some of the lessons he has learnt along the way & the stories that have given him an inspiring perspective we can all learn from. Every now and then (about four times in a thousand episodes), we-revisit a slightly-updated version of an old episode, which proved to be super-popular first time around. This is such an episode. Many of you newbies have never listened to it, some hard-core TYPers have relistened a bunch of times and many have listened once and (understandably) forgotten most of what was spoken about. Anyway, growing up, Dr. Charlie Teo wanted to be either a rubbish collector (because they're fit), a bouncer (because he was a martial artist) or a mechanic (because he was into motorbikes - and still is). He actually started an apprenticeship as a mechanic before he studied medicine. This was a fascinating and meandering chat exploring Charlie's strategy for avoiding jet lag, neuroplasticity, improving with age, people wanting him to fail, dealing with criticism and hate, mapping the brain, a brain-machine interface, contact sports, poo transplants (yep), why he became a vegan, his exercise regime, our mutual love of motorbikes, patient-centred care, hanging out with the Dalai Lama 1 on 1 (for 4 hours), the power of kindness and lots more. This description was written by ChatGPT and is not completely true, Nam was busy. In this episode (Episode 28) , we explore three seemingly unrelated topics: the controversial neurosurgeon Charlie Teo, the bizarre sport of Power Slap League, and the iconic sitcom Friends. But as we delve deeper into each of these subjects, we uncover surprising connections and thought-provoking insights. First, we examine the life and career of Charlie Teo, who has been both praised for his pioneering work in brain surgery and criticized for his high fees and alleged ethical violations. We talk to medical experts and patients who have had experiences with Teo ( We definitely don't ) , and ask whether his reputation as a maverick genius is deserved. Next, we turn to the world of Power Slap League, a sport in which competitors take turns slapping each other in the face until one of them either falls down or gives up. We speak to players and fans of the sport, as well as psychologists who study the psychology of extreme sports (Again we definitely didn't do this). We ask whether Power Slap League is a legitimate athletic pursuit or a disturbing spectacle that glorifies violence. Finally, we explore the enduring popularity of Friends, which has remained one of the most beloved and binge-worthy sitcoms of all time. We talk to cultural critics and fans of the show (Definitely didn't do this either), and ask why it continues to resonate with audiences more than 25 years after its debut. We also examine the show's influence on popular culture, from fashion trends to societal attitudes towards sex and relationships. Throughout the episode, we draw connections between these seemingly disparate topics, highlighting the ways in which they reflect larger societal trends and values. Whether you're a fan of Charlie Teo, Power Slap League, Friends, or all three, this episode offers a fascinating and thought-provoking look at some of the most compelling and controversial aspects of modern culture.

It seems The You Project is having a run on Neurosurgeons at the moment. This time the Doc and I discuss why his colleagues regard him as an agitator, his inability to be content (perfectionist anyone?), our need for a (metaphoric) security blanket, managing self-doubt, the role of the amygdala (it's not only about emotions), why the left and right hemispheres of the brain are not only about logic and creativity (as previously thought), his most inspirational moment in an operating theatre, contact sports and brain damage (CTE), his presentation at our TYP conference and lots more. Naomi couldn't speak highly enough of her gratitude for Charlie Teo and "Mind, Body, Connection." Fortunately she also had amazing support around her. After two strokes, surgeries, the whole 9 yards and being given a death sentence of 3 months... She followed her instincts and that's the reason she's here to share her extraordinary story with us today. She calls it stubbornness, I call it a champion attitude, but nonetheless, there's a lot we don't know about Brain Cancer and a lot more to learn. Thankfully, Charlie Teo, a neurosurgeon in NSW is saving the lives of people other surgeons won't operate on and is in need of as much funding to make even more impact. Join us on the Summon Your Superhuman team page via the Charlie Teo Foundation and make any donation you can so we can help so many more people get a chance to be a survivor too.https://charlie-teo-foundation.grassrootz.com/challenge-yourself-with-charlie/summon-your-superhumanThanking you in advance Superhuman!-Ria
I met Meg Foreman in the dog park... where all good friends meet. One day she went back home for a 'holiday'. She was gone quite a while, in fact. Returning a couple of months later yet, little did I know Meg had taken off for brain surgery. Yet, little did I know Meg had digested the words of Dr Charlie Teo that told her quite clearly that this surgery was high risk and if he ran his surgical knife a mm off course inside her skull then she would quite simply 'bleed out on the table and die'. Meg left for her supposed holiday (or so I thought) with a contingency plan in place... in case that happened. But after 7 years of misdiagnosis and countless, often useless medication it was a reward that made that 'risk' pale in comparison. What I love about this chat is how even I, right now as we sit recording this, didn't really know how serious, how recent, how confronting and how challenging her recovery was. We laugh a lot. She's a soft, genuine, empathetic dog-mum that underneath it all holds a level of strength and courage that is sending goosebumps across my skin as I write this of her. Thanks Meg for sharing your story for the first time on my far-from-private forum. http://www.megforemanpsychology.com.au/ www.tiffaneeandco.com.au | @rollwiththepunches_podcast | @tiffaneeandco EPISODE SPONSOR: TRY escape Landscape Design & Construction | www.facebook.com/tryescape | @tryescape --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/roll-withthepunches/message
Professor Charlie Teo AM is not your typical neurosurgeon. In demand across all continents for his willingness to offer surgery to those who have been given no hope, he has appointments in Australia, USA, India, Vietnam and Singapore. As passionate about teaching as performing surgery, Charlie has been awarded best teacher awards in both the USA and Australia and devotes 3 months of his time every year instructing and doing live surgery in developing countries. He has also established a fellowship program that attracts over 600 applicants every year and has trained and mentored neurosurgeons for many of the world's leading universities, such as Johns Hopkins, Stanford, Duke and Harvard Universities.Professor Teo strongly believes that a surgeon's responsibility to their patients shouldn't end after surgery. In keeping with his desire to find cures for recurrent brain tumours, he has raised over $20 million for research. He has done this through the Cure For Life Foundation, the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation and currently the Charlie Teo Foundation. His efforts were recognised in 2011 when he was appointed a member of the Order of Australia, in 2012 when he was invited to give the Australia Day Address to the Nation, and then in 2013 when he was the first non-politician Australian to address the US Congress on the need for more funding for brain cancer research.Charlie is a father to four beautiful daughters and supports the rights of girls and young women in impoverished countries such as Cambodia and India through various charities including his own Teo Family FoundationTo find out more about Charlie Teo visit his website CharlieTeo.com.au.
