What if the key to a more fulfilling life isn't found above but beneath our feet? In this episode, we welcome scholar, author, and Pagan practitioner Christopher McIntosh to explore the rise of modern Paganism in Europe and the U.S., the power of seasonal rites, sacred gardening, and breathwork, and the mystical practice of Stav—Nordic Tai Chi. McIntosh also shares rare encounters with legendary occult scholars and Pagan luminaries, offering a glimpse into the esoteric world of the late 20th century. Join us as we uncover the Fivefold Path and the magic that lies in re-enchanting everyday life.
For those devoted to the Rosicrucian tradition, Christopher McIntosh needs no introduction. In this conversation, Rudolf brings us closer to the man behind the foundational works that have shaped our understanding of Rosicrucianism. His books—The Rosicrucians, The Rose Cross and the Age of Reason, and his recent Rosicrucian Trilogy containing new translations of the original three Manifestos—stand as indispensable guides through the movement's rich history and symbolic mysteries. McIntosh, a widely respected speaker on Rosicrucianism's historical context, now opens a more personal window into the motivations and philosophies that drive his work, demonstrating how his passion for these mysteries can continue to inspire seekers today. In perfect timing with Pansopher's recent relaunch, McIntosh unveils a deeply personal narrative that intertwines with the cultural and spiritual backdrop of Germany—expanding his focus to explore the often-overlooked roots of the German occult tradition. In his latest book, Occult Germany, he draws on three decades of personal experience living in Germany to reveal the subtle influences and hidden currents that have helped shaped modern occultism. In this conversation, McIntosh offers his perspective on how these forces have worked behind the scenes, nurturing the esoteric landscape in ways that are both illuminating and unexpected. Exploring Germany's rich contributions to alchemy, theosophy, and Rosicrucianism, McIntosh brings us even deeper, turning to the often-overlooked realms of German folk and pagan traditions. This area, rarely discussed in esoteric circles—especially given the cultural aftermath of WWII—emerges here as a key influence on modern occultism. McIntosh unpacks the enduring legacy of German Romanticism, Wagner's mythic visions, the Grail legends, and figures like Gustav Meyrink, all of whom contribute to the rich and largely untold story of Germany's spiritual heritage. Russia has always been a bricolage of spiritualities, experimental religions, and enduring shamanism. Is there such a thing as a usable and merged Russian mysticism – or at least some constant egregore? There is one, and it's found while studying concepts/movements: Silver Age, Soviet Secret Societies, Slavic and Siberian religiosity, Greek Orthodox esotericism, and more. Explores how the search for meaning in the post-Soviet era has given rise to a revival of ancient spiritual traditions and a plethora of new movements• Reveals the survival of ancient Slavic deities, pagan practices, and folk medicine tradition in modern Russia, including the indigenous pre-Christian customs of the Mari people and the shamanic traditions of Siberia• Examines the precursors to modern spiritual movements in the “Silver Age” (1880-1920) and discusses the impact of the Russian Revolution on spiritual and esoteric groups• Offers a deep look at the controversial Book of Veles, branded by some as a forgery and hailed by others as an epic chronicle of the Slavic peopleIn this in-depth look at occult and esoteric traditions in Russia, Christopher McIntosh explores the currents of mysticism, myth, magic, and the spiritual to which the Russian soul has always been attuned. The author explains how the search for meaning in the post- Soviet era has given rise to a revival of ancient spiritual traditions and a plethora of new movements. He examines the precursors to these movements in the “Silver Age” (1880-1920) before the Revolution, when alternative forms of spirituality were finding new life as a reaction to the ongoing climate of violence, revolt, and repression. He discusses the impact of the Russian Revolution on spiritual and esoteric groups and shows how their activities were tolerated and even in some instances encouraged--until Stalin assumed power in 1924.Discussing the spiritual reawakening after the fall of communism in 1989, the author explores the survival of Slavic deities and pagan practices in modern Russia, including the indigenous pre-Christian customs of the Mari people and the shamanic traditions of Siberia. He examines the resurgence of the Orthodox Church and the burgeoning of alternative forms of spirituality. He offers a deep look at the controversial Book of Veles, branded by some as a forgery and hailed by others as an epic chronicle of the Slavic people. He also explores the interface between spirituality and the arts and the unique qualities of the Russian language as a medium for the sacred.Revealing the implications of the modern Russian spiritual and esoteric renaissance, McIntosh shows that it still remains to be seen whether Edgar Cayce's prediction of Russia as the hope of the world will come true or if Russia will remain, as Churchill famously stated, “a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.”Christopher McIntosh is a British-born writer and historian, specializing in the esoteric traditions of the West. He has a doctorate in history from Oxford University, a degree in German from London University, and a diploma in Russian from the United Nations Language School. The author of many books, most recently Beyond the North Wind, he lives in Lower Saxony, North Germany.

THE HILLS AND THE RIVERS 1) JACOB'S LADDER 2) TEMPERANCE 3) NOTHIN DOIN Go to their website The conception of the band happened in 2013, when Isaac and Heidi Hill began recording some of Isaac's original work. The Hills come from a multi-generational musical family, raised singing hymns in harmony around the table at family gatherings, with Isaac playing instruments and writing songs since the age of 12. As a poetry major at Pitt, it wasn't until after graduation that he rediscovered his love for music which grew during his exposure to Pittsburgh's fringe busking scene at Occupy Pittsburgh in 2011. With a couple of busker recruits on board for their freshman album, they began recording The World at Kasey Fusco's Etcetera Studios in Ambridge, PA. The Hills and the Rivers are one of the flag ship bands of Pittsburgh's 4th River Music Collective, along side their close friends DIY folk/punk band, Cousin Boneless. The 4th River Music Collective has grown into a group of over 20 bands from various genres with their own annual music festival in just a few years. The Hills and the Rivers' sophomore album, Apocalyptic Dreams, was released in November of 2016. A meditation on how to find hope in a chaotic and apocalyptic world, it featured core members Isaac Hill on octave mandolin and vocals, Heidi Hill on vocals and tambourine, Ian Hill on mandolin and vocals, James Bristol on upright bass, Chris Fazio on violin, Joey Schuller on banjo and Faith Hersey on djembe as well as various musicians recruited from 4th River Music Collective pool. "The North" is simultaneously a location, a direction, and a mystical concept. Although this concept has ancient roots in mythology, folklore, and fairy tales, it continues to resonate today within modern culture. McIntosh leads readers, chapter by chapter, through the magical and spiritual history of the North, as well as its modern manifestations, as documented through physical records, such as runestones and megaliths, but also through mythology and lore. In addition, McIntosh discusses Russian Hyperboreanism, which he describes as among "the most influential of the new religions and quasi-religious movements that have sprung up in Russia since the fall of Communism" and which is currently almost unknown in the West. Christopher McIntosh is a writer and historian specializing in the esoteric traditions of the West. Christopher McIntosh – Beyond the North WindAired Wednesday, 12 June 2019, 8:00 PM ETIn 1970, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin composed “The Immigrant Song”. The lyric said, in part;“We come from the land of the ice and snow From the midnight sun, where the hot springs flow The hammer of the gods We’ll drive our ships to new lands To fight the horde, and sing and cry Valhalla, I am coming!”References to Norse mythology may once again be found in mainstream pop culture. Marvel Studio’s blockbuster series of movies featuring Odin, Thor and Loki are drawing record crowds to connect with the energy they represent. Why is there this resurgent interest in the mystic north and are neo-pagans finding new meaning in ancient beliefs and practices.?My guest this week on Destination Unlimited, author and historian Christopher McIntosh, says these ancient roots are resonating again today. Christopher McIntosh is the author of numerous books on various esoteric traditions. He holds a PhD in history from Oxford, a degree in German from London University and a diploma in Russian from the United Nations Language School. He was on the faculty of the Centre for the Study of Esotericism at Exeter University. He lives in Germany from where he is joining me this week to discuss his new book, Beyond the North Wind: The Fall and Rise of the Mystic North.
Mike and Christopher discuss Beyond the North Wind, the relevance of The North today, Hyperborea, Vikings, and Norse Mythology.

LISTEN to the FULL episode 8 w/ author and research Christopher McIntosh BELOW! Christopher McIntosh, author and scholar of Western esoteric and pagan traditions, used to work for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) from around 1989 to 1993.As I discovered in our conversation, his work there led to him to embrace paganism, as he discovered and became critical of the UNDP's globalist agenda, and its worship of the "God of Economic Growth".For him Paganism was a welcome contrast. It represented the ancestral, the local, the non-material, the traditional, the circular (and not the linear). The UNDP was the modern, the global, the material, and the "progressive".I asked him a question that many liberal capitalists (and even socialists and communists) have posed to such arguments: aren't you simply romanticising poverty?Listen to his reply in this excerpt of our conversation.
Christopher McIntosh, author and scholar of Western esoteric (e.g. Rosicrucianism) and pagan traditions (e.g. Celtic, Norse/Scandanavian, Germanic), used to work with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and it affected him deeply. But not in the way you might expect.McIntosh noticed a globalist agenda in the UNDP and a worshipping of the "God of Economic Growth", which profoundly dislocated people for the sake of the economy.Today, in the global battle between nationalism and globalism, paganism has informed much of the "alt right", for example, and many nationalists opposed to to globalism. But to conceive of paganism and the search for roots as "right wing" is to misunderstand it from the start, as it is also tied to environmentalism and feminism, for example. Indeed, it is very much associated with the hippie movement of the 1960s and New Age Movements thereafter.Join me in conversation with Christopher McIntosh as we embark on this fascinating discussion of Paganism, globalism, politics and the contemporary demonisation of the search for one's roots and origins.

As mentioned this is a great book that covers what you do really need to know: How and Why Astrology even started. Here's the link to the book The Astrologers & Their Creed by Christopher McIntosh https://amzn.to/2HCw7ok Here's Dr McIntosh's Uni Page: https://humanities.exeter.ac.uk/history/staff/cmcintosh/ Illustration This is the piccie from the book showing the ecliptic:Sun's apparent path (among the stars) through the year. And the Equator : imaginary line around the Earth at equal distance to the Poles Quote from page 24: These points are what we would now call the solstices and the equinoxes. The diagram below explains these terms more clearly. The sphere is the Earth and the horizontal circle round it represents the equator (imagining that the Earth's axis is vertical). The tilted circle represents the ecliptic, that is the path that the Sun appears to trace around the Earth during the course of a year. The equinoxes are the points where the ecliptic crosses the equator, once in the spring and once in the autumn. These are marked as E1 and E2 (respectively). The solstices are the highest points of summer and winter and are shown as S1 and S2. If one lived in the northern hemisphere S1 would be the summer solstice and S2 the winter one, and vice-versa for the southern hemisphere.
On Episode 25 of the Spybrary Spy Podcast, host Shane Whaley talks to author Christopher McIntosh about his cold war spy thriller 'The Lebensborn Spy' What is the Lebensborn Spy all about then? 'The Lebensborn Spy is a novel based on a real situation during the Cold War, in which former inmates of the Nazi Lebensborn maternity and children's homes were used as spies by the East German intelligence service. The story involves one such spy, who goes to Denmark to carry out espionage for the German Democratic Republic and to find his mother, who he believes to be a Danish woman who had a love affair with a German soldier during the wartime occupation and then gave her infant son away to the Lebensborn. There is a parallel thread to the story, involving another young man living in East Berlin. The two men and the Danish family become caught up in a web of deception, betrayal and love. The story, which is also about the search for one's origins and one's native homeland, moves to a dramatic climax, which reaches a startling dénouement in the re-united Berlin of 1990.' In this engaging interview for Spybrary, Christopher McIntosh shares with us: Why his book is dedicated to all former Lebensborn children’ For those of our listeners who are not familiar with Lebensborn Christopher tell us more.
