During the 15th-century, citizens of Nuremberg, Germany, experienced spectacular Carnival parades highlighted by the appearance of floats known as "hells." Featuring immense figures, including dragons, ogres, and man-eating giants, these hells were also peopled with costumed performers and enhanced with mechanized effects and pyrotechnics. In this episode, adapted from a chapter of Mr. Ridenour's new book, A Season of Madness: Fools, Monsters and Marvels of the Old-World Carnival, we examine the Nuremberg parade, the Schembartlauf, as it evolves from costumed dance performances staged by the local Butcher's Guild in the mid-1 4th-century into a procession of fantastic and elaborately costumed figures, and finally -- in 1475 - into a showcase for the rolling hells. We begin, however, with an examination of a historical anecdotes sometimes presented as forerunners of the Carnival parades, and of the Schembartlauf in particular, including two sometimes put forward to support a "pagan survival" theory. The first involves a ceremonial wagon housing a figure of the putative fertility goddess, Nerthus, hauled about by Germanic peoples in the first century and mentioned in Tacitus' Germania. The second, also involving a wagon with fertility figure, is described by Gregory of Tours as being hauled through farmers' fields in the 6th-century. Period illustration of costumed figure from a Schembartbuch. Period illustration of costumed figure from a Schembartbuch. A third case involves the mysterious "land-ship," a full-scale wheeled ship hauled from Germany into Belgium, and the Netherlands in 1135. Mentioned exclusively by the Flemish abbot, composer, and chronicler Rudolf of St. Trond in his Gesta Abbatum Trudonensium (Deeds of the Abbots of Trond), it's characterized by the abbot as a sort of pagan temple on wheels and locus of orgiastic behavior, the precise purpose and nature of this peculiar incident remains largely a mystery. We then hear a comic incident imagined in the early 13th-century story of the knight Parzival as told by Wolfram von Eschenbach. By way of analogy to the character's ludicrous behavior, Carnival is mentioned for the first time, or more specifically von Eschenbach use the German word for Carnival, specifically the Carnival of Germany's southwest called "Fastnacht." Our story of the Schembartlauf concludes the show with a description of its ironic downfall through local intrigues fired by the Protestant Reformation. Worth mentioning also, in our Schembart segment, is the heated scholarly debate around objects depicted in period illustrations, which look for all the world like oversized pyrotechnic artichokes. New Patreon rewards related to Mr. Ridenour's Carnival book are also announced in this episode, along with related Carnival-themed merch in our Etsy shop, including our "Party Like it's 1598" shirts featuring Schembart figures.

Prof. Paul Bishop, Ph.D. returns to us from the University of Glasgow to discuss the first volume in his new series, Jung and the Epic of Transformation: Wolfram von Eschenbach's "Parzival" and the Grail as Transformation, published in May by Chiron.
AI Adoption and Business ValueEschenbach explains that there's been a shift from experimental AI phases to practical implementation. The shift means that "customers are going to look to go to trusted partners, partners they have an existing relationship with, partners that they know have a highly curated set of data." Workday has such a curated data set. Further, as part of the shift, there's now a need for ROI and total cost of ownership analysis in AI investments.CEO Priorities for 2025 AI, enterprise consolidation, and talent are Eschenbach's key priorities for 2025. When it comes to talent, he says CEOs and other leaders need to think about how "that talent is going to ultimately peacefully coexist with AI and things like agents in the future." He also discusses Workday's AI mindset — it's not just about delivering it to customers but also successfully integrating AI internally — along with AI's role in driving productivity. Customers are looking to do "more with less." They want to consolidate point solutions onto more comprehensive platforms like Workday.AI Deployment and Talent Integration CEOs should foster an AI-first culture. Eschenbach provides examples of AI use cases, such as job description automation and recruiter agents, showcasing the tangible ROI and productivity gains in HR and finance. Integrating AI with existing talent helps drive business benefits.Competitive Advantages and Market Position Workday's success stems from its technology, large client base, and on-time delivery. "Our customers have greater than a 95% on-time delivery of the Workday platform and on budget," Eschenbach points out "We know how to deploy this at scale across the biggest companies in the world, which gives us a leg up versus our competition, who, at times, have very complex data sets and environments and can't implement at the speed and pace and at the dollar value that a Workday can." Other Workday attributes include its platform's open architecture, as well as its strong company culture and high levels of employee engagement.Partner Growth and International Expansion Eschenbach reports significant growth in the partner community and its impact on business. "Historically, we've had really good partners . . . 10% of our new business in New ACV [annual contract value] last quarter came from our partners. Our partners are having a meaningful impact on our business. We have grown our partner community by five times in 18 months." He speaks about the focus on selling through hyperscalers and forming strategic partnerships, as well as the potential in international markets and continued investments in new sectors, such as the U.S. federal market.Data Set and AI Partnerships "We're opening up the aperture," Escenbach says, explaining how Workday is tackling AI. "We're thinking about AI in multiple ways." Curated data is essential for AI tools. Eschenbach discusses the Workday platform's integration with Slack and Microsoft to enable agent-to-agent communication, underscoring that data is important in powering AI tools and delivering customer benefits.Innovation and External ConcernsIn the face of the potential impact of global macro situations, there's a need to stay focused on innovation."We focus on innovation, and we focus on each other here inside the building and our workmates, and we continue to support our partner ecosystem on a global basis. So while there are some concerns out there, if you focus too much on them, it's a distraction."

It is common in folklore and fairy tales that there is a theme of a land under a spell, which could only be broken by asking the right question. The Grail Question is the question to be asked of the wounded Fisher King in order to break the enchantment under which he and his lands are held, by the quest knight. In Perceval, by Chrétien de Troyes, the question is: Who does the Grail serve? The question is really twofold: What is the Grail? Whom does it serve? At first Perceval did not achieve the Grail simply because he forgot to ask this question, or didn't dare to since his tutor, Gornemant of Gohort, had warned him not to talk too much. He did not make the same mistake twice and asked the question needed when he visited the castle for the second time and completes the adventure. Wolfram von Eschenbach's version of the question is: What ails you [the Grail King]? In Diu Crône, by Heinrich von dem Türlin, the Grail company were in a state of living dead and were freed when Gawain roared For the sake of God and His majesty, tell me the meaning of this large assembly and miracle! Gawain partially heals the Fisher King's land by asking about the Bleeding Lance, but he falls asleep before he can ask about the Grail, in the First Continuation of Chrétien's Perceval. --- SourcesParzival | Wolfram von Eschenbach, 1200-1210Perlesvaus | Early 13th centuryDiu Crône | Heinrich von dem Türlin, c. 1230Didot – Perceval | c. 1220-1230Third Continuation of Chrétien's Perceval | Manessier, c. 1230Perceval, or Le Conte del Graal | Chrétien de Troyes, late 12th century https://www.monsalvat.no/question.htm https://nightbringer.se/the-legend-of-king-arthur/a-z-arthurian-events/grail-question/ Glorification | The Final Frontier Boldly Go Where Only the One Man Has Gone Before! As a Swiss SME that has thoroughly examined its production from a digital perspective, Sistag AG has recognised the potential of bits and bytes. The company has modernised its facility with a Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) from Fastems and this approach is yielding interesting results with new experiences and ambitious plans. The globally active Sistag AG, headquartered in Eschenbach in the Canton of Lucerne, manufactures isolation valves for a wide range of industries. This includes pulp and paper, food and beverage, wastewater treatment and biogas/chemical plants. “In addition, we specialise in knife gate valves, known under the brand name Wey Valve. These valves are used in the petrochemical, oil production, and mining industries. Our mechanical production here employs around 165 employees, producing approximately 25,000 to 30,000 knife gate valves annually,” says Manuel Schmidlin, Head of Manufacturing at Sistag. Like many other Swiss SMEs, Sistag faces high manufacturing costs. Manuel Schmidlin notes: “Land is expensive and labour costs are high. Moreover, finding skilled workers for production is challenging, so we have increasingly focused on in-house training.” To economically produce and manufacture, machines at Sistag must run almost non-stop. “We also have the advantage of being particularly strong in the field of special valves. Due to the relatively high level of automation here at Sistag, we can also compete in terms of pricing,” adds Schmidlin. The housings, a core component for knife gate valves, are manufactured on two horizontal machining centres. In 2005, the company invested in an FMS from Fastems, specifically a Multi-Level System (MLS), initially connected to an OKK HM 630. In 2010, the system was expanded to a total length of 35m, with a second OKK machine of the same type added. In 2022, Sistag decided to modernise the MLS. Manuel Schmidlin explains: “The electronics were still running on 32 bits, and the system was essentially at ‘End of Life' with no replacement parts available. During the upgrade to a 64-bit system, we conducted a complete retrofit, both in terms of controls and mechanics.” As Sistag has been pursuing a consistent digitisation strategy for about four years, the FMS was not only updated with the Manufacturing Management Software (MMS) from Fastems but also placed a significant focus on digitising the entire production facility. According to Manuel Schmidlin, the company has primarily grown historically in its 60-year history. Sentences like ‘We've always done it this way' has been heard by the production manager many times. “Our projected business has significantly increased. When a customer orders valves today, it's not three or four, but immediately 400 or 500. With our existing infrastructure, we were not able to plan such large orders efficiently from start to finish. We had great difficulty keeping our machine capacities and we had no overview of what was happening at what time and where the priorities were. Therefore, our goal was to control our entire production with MMS as a central MES (Manufacturing Execution System).” ‘The Terra Incognita' of A Manufacturing Organisation The MMS from Fastems provides all the prerequisites for this digitisation approach, as it is currently one of the most powerful solutions for planning, running and monitoring automated machining production. The MMS automatically plans production up to 96 hours in advance while considering all necessary resources, such as raw materials, NC programs and tools, including their tool life. Manuel Schmidlin is fully aware that for consistently planned production, standalone machines, manual workstations and inspection stations must eventually be included in the whole digitisation process, in addition to the automated equipment. Not an easy task, as these areas are often still a ‘Terra Incognita' in a usual manufacturing organisation. Nevertheless, this situation is set to change at Sistag with the implementation of a Fastems MES solution for non-automated equipment – Work Cell Operations (WCO).

Today, in "Romantic Knights", Kris visits romantic notions of Chivalry that grew out of medieval European mythology - based on Mort d'Arthur, and Eschenbach's Parzival (Percival in English) - one knight's quest for the Holy Grail. The mythology so often portrays the stereotypical, adventurous, warrior-male "knight in shining armor", riding valiantly to the rescue of a beautiful, but vulnerable female - beset by dark and evil forces. Or a female - as temptress, leading the errant but lusting knight - astray? In the context of the changing power relationship between male and female, Kris, at the outset, asks us to explore what happened to chivalry? Is it residual in the belief that soldiers should risk life and limb in military service. Are there better words/concepts to explain how the strength and courage - irrespective of gender, may still champion the vulnerable and the needy? Is the concept of chivalry - dead? Is this something to lament? Kris reminds us of our first two UU principles.
Guest: Carl Eschenbach, co-CEO of WorkdayWhen Carl Eschenbach decided to leave VMWare after more than 14 years as COO, no one believed it: Not chairman Joe Tucci, not CEO Pat Gelsinger, and maybe not Carl himself. But he needed a more predictable work-life balance to help raise his teenage children. For the next seven years, he served as a partner at Sequoia Capital. And every day, he thought — and to his wife's chagrin, talked — about going back: “It was always on the back of my mind,” he says. After the kids were out of the house, in late 2022, he jumped back into operating and became co-CEO of Workday. “It's what I love to do,” he says. “I feel like I've been called to do it.”In this episode, Carl and Joubin discuss jumping rope, Mike Clayville, the Flowbee, focusing on the family, wrestling, commuting cross-country, servant leadership, Sequoia Capital, Aneel Bhusri, co-CEOs, and Palo Alto Networks. In this episode, we cover: Working on Sand Hill Road (00:55) Carl's workout routine (03:15) Staying humble and grounded (08:04) Carl's family and dinner table conversation (11:41) Drive and ambition (16:08) College vs. trade school (19:53) 3Com, Inktomi, and EMC (24:33) Deciding to join VMware (28:02) Virtualizing the data center (31:48) The pressure of an incredible ride (35:54) The infamous CFO story (40:14) Eyeing the CEO job (46:00) Carl's one “big regret” (47:40) Refocusing after a tragedy (52:05) A left turn into venture (55:37) The “itch” to go back to operating (01:00:17) Joining the Workday board (01:04:37) Building an enduring business (01:07:15) “End[ing] my career in an operating role” (01:09:09) Transitioning out of venture (01:15:56) Who Workday is hiring and what “grit” means to Carl (01:18:01) Links: Connect with CarlLinkedIn Connect with Joubin Twitter LinkedIn Email: grit@kleinerperkins.com Learn more about Kleiner Perkins This episode was edited by Eric Johnson from LightningPod.fm
On January 16th, 2020 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a discussion on the controversial themes and symbols of the Medieval Holy Grail legend. We will first establish that the entire concept of “Lucifer the Light bringer” is a hoax launched in the Old Testament to cover-up Jehovah's palace coup (the War in Heaven) and the subsequent exile of Elyon and his Elohim (the Fallen Angels). Next we will examine the Medieval Cathars, their origins and beliefs. We will consider the survival of Valentinian Gnosticism in Southern France and the Troubador Courts of Love. We will describe the Grail and its Hermetic-Sabian Celestial origin as set forth in von Eschenbach's Parzival – and we will reveal what the physical Holy Grail really was. So if you want to know what those nasty French knights were hiding in their castle, join us on the quest.

On Thursday December 20th, 2018 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a discussion on the Hermetic origins of the Holy Grail as presented in Wolfram von Eschenbach's Medieval romance “Parzival. This is a follow-up on an earlier broadcast from three years ago in which we read Janinne Rene's Article on Parzival from The Seventh Ray issue number 19, January 1977. In the introduction to her article I stated that: “Much of the symbolism and the allegory of Kellner's original O.T.O. derived from Parzival.” This and other fascinating secrets embedded in Wolfram's medieval masterpiece will be the subjects of tonight's broadcast. So, if you want to find the Grail we have the clues for you. Eschenbach's Parzival is like Colonna's Hypnerotomachia. It's one of those old books full of secrets and magick. And our job on the Hermetic Hour is to dig them out for you.

This episode of Tech Sales Insights is the last part of our conversation with Carl Eschenbach, Partner at Sequoia Capital. He shares his wisdom on the secret sauce to effective leadership and how to become a leader who motivates, inspires, and lives the true meaning of servant leadership as well. HIGHLIGHTSThe CRO's scope of responsibilities and leadership across rolesAim to become the motivational and inspirational leaderUnderstanding the servant leader QUOTESThe true meaning of servant leadership inspires success - Carl: "If you go and study what true servant leadership is, think about the very first word of servant leadership, and that is to serve. And I fundamentally believe the greatest leaders, regardless of role or capacity, are the ones that serve their people. They're not leading them. And through that servant-type approach, your leadership gets displayed and everyone becomes more successful."First level is motivational leader, second is inspirational, third is both - Carl: "The third level of leadership is the one who knows how to do both, because there are times, Randy, when you needed to be pushed probably and get that little extra out of Randy, but then there's other times when people inspired you and pulled you in." This episode of Tech Sales Insights is the second part of our conversation with Carl Eschenbach, Partner at Sequoia Capital. He provides deep insights into how they choose companies to invest in, as well as the primary importance of change management to survive economic headwinds. Carl also gives actionable tips on how companies must sell and the shift in messaging that this requires. HIGHLIGHTS"Look inside and outside the building" to decide when to invest in a companyGet things done by focusing on change managementHow to sell effectively in a down market QUOTESAdapt as fast as the changes come to survive - Carl: "In the climate we're in today and potentially even broader headwinds going forward, if your company is not changing as fast as what's happening outside the walls of your company, death is near. You just got to be open to change. You have to communicate change."Show a strong ROI to attract buyers during a downturn - Carl: "In down markets, nothing sells like a strong ROI, so I encourage people to revisit their value proposition, number one, around ROI. The second reason people buy is if you're going to help them drive revenue growth. And if you can have a value proposition that shows tangible evidence of it and you can back it up with quantifiable numbers, people will buy your technology."The growing complexity of operations has eroded operational rigor - Carl: "Simplicity scales, complexity doesn't." Time for Three — Letters for the Future (DG) Jump to giveaway form New Classical Tracks - Time for Three by “This is Kevin Puts; he's our new member, our composer in residence — ‘Time for Four.'” The members of the string trio Time for Three — violinists Nick Kendall and Charles Yang, and bassist Ranaan Meyer — are talking about Puts and his involvement on their latest album, Letters for the Future, which also includes music by composer Jennifer Higdon. Meyer: “We've been on this journey for a while. When we started out, we were this band that was discovering a common ground with classical music. We had this desire and inquisitive nature of wanting to explore all different genres. “Now fast-forward to today, and we're here to talk about our recording with the Philadelphia Orchestra, which features Jennifer Higdon's work that was also the very first concerto that was ever written for us back in 2008. Here is an exclusive performance for YourClassical MPR of the Cadenza from Higdon's Concerto 4-3: Watch now “We're also super excited about our latest concerto, Contact, by Kevin Puts. In addition to being a sensational composer and writing gorgeous music that is incredibly storytelling in nature, he is like-minded to our group, which pushes us forward on our instruments.” How is this album a homecoming for the group? Kendall: “When Ranaan and I attended the Curtis Institute of Music in the late ‘90s, Mark O'Connor, Edgar Meyer and Yo-Yo Ma released Appalachian Waltz, which blew our minds. At that time, it also seemed natural for Time for Three to do the same. We had this incredible opportunity with the Philadelphia Orchestra with help from maestro Christoph Eschenbach. “Eschenbach saw this energy from us and thought if he could put these virtuoso musicians in the hands of a master composer, who would that be? We had a meeting with him, and both of our lists had Jennifer Higdon, who was a teacher at Curtis. That is the story behind Concerto 4-3.” Can you talk about the creativity behind Contact? Puts: “I thought it was an interesting idea to start with nothing but a three-voice chorale and then gradually elaborate on that. As far as there being a message, I didn't really think of it that way until later. We realized what we were working on a piece about all the different forms of contact.” Here's an exclusive performance of Puts' Gankino Horo, which is not featured on the album: Watch now To hear the rest of my conversation, click on the extended interview above, or download the extended podcast on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. The truth disappears when we summarize and paraphrase. In the third episode, Michael Coyle and Alan Swensen turn to wisdom literature written by two transatlantic women whose lives span three centuries, Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach (1830-1916) and Sarah Manguso (b. 1974). Key themes include historical understandings of social castes and gender, feminism, tensions between nature and artistic creation, and the philosophical relationship between the fragment and the whole.
On Thursday April 2Oth, 2017 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will continue to review and discuss the modern English (2004) translation of Otto Rahn's 1937 Lucifer's Court. This was Rahn's travel journal from Southern France to Iceland when he researched his personal quest to solve the mystery of the Holy Grail as described in the Medieval romance Parzival by Wolfram von Eschenbach. Rahn believed that the Medieval Cathars -- the Gnostic Heretics who were wiped out by the Roman Catholic Albigensian Crusade in the 1300s, were the keepers of the Grail. In this instalment we will get into the possible Persian Manichean origin of Parzival (Aryan of course) and Rhan's fascination with Hercules and the Argonauts legends (also Aryan) We will also discuss Nigel Graddon's 2008 Bio on Rahn and his rundown on all of our favorite Nazi Spook Books influenced by Rahn's quest. So tune in and we will follow the shadow of the swastika from Southern France to Tibet and back again.
On Thursday April 13th, 2017 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will review and discuss the modern English (2004) translation of Otto Rahn's 1937 Lucifer's Court. This was Rahn's travel journal from Southern France to Iceland when he researched his personal quest to solve the mystery of the Holy Grail as described in the Medieval romance Parzival by Wolfram von Eschenbach. Rahn believed that the Medieval Cathars -- the Gnostic Heretics who were wiped out by the Roman Catholic Albigensian Crusade in the 1300s -- were the keepers of the Grail and that they were devotees of Lucifer. He was very favorable to Nazi Aryan race theories and was invited to join Himmler's SS. Rahn's veneration of Lucifer as the God of the Medieval French and German heretics may be the main source of what has been called Nazi Satanism. Lucifer was actually another name for Semyaza, the leader of the Fallen Angels in the Book of Enoch. We will try to sort out the errors in Otto Rahn's work and give him credit where credit is due. In spite of his political incorrectness he was an intrepid anthropologist and folklorist and his book is a fascinating read for those interested in the occult history of Europe. So tune in and we will explore the castles and caverns of the lost land of the Troubadours in search of the Holy Grail.
