Her book The Arabic Influences on Early Modern Occult Philosophy was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2015. She is currently preparing a long-awaited critical translation from Arabic into English of the grimoire known as the Picatrix. Editorial roles include being a board member for Aries: Journal for the Study of Western Esotericism and Brill's Islamic Translation Series, and an associate editor of the journal Early Science and Medicine. In this interview, Liana speaks at length about Islamic Esotericism. This is an area of esoteric history that I haven't yet touched upon, so I was happy that Liana agreed to share her extensive knowledge on this topic. Some highlights of our discussion include: why the views and discourse of Islam within the area of “Western” esotericism is problematic; academic debates and disagreements in this area, how Liana defines Islamic esotericism, including paradigms and social orientations; and why the relationship between the idea of an eternal truth and the Islamic law raises anxiety in how Islamic esotericism is interpreted. Liana also discusses her research that deals with the 17th century Maltese inquisition, in particular the trial of Sellem the Moor, a Muslim enslaved person who was accused of being a magician. This work is part of a larger volume called Magic in Malta, and Liana examines this trial on three interconnected levels, and is a down-to-earth, practical example of how magic was being used by people at this time. Be sure to check out the program notes for links to all of the articles discussed in this episode. My guests this month are Dr. Bernd-Christian Otto and Andrea Centore, co-founders of the Research Network for the Study of Esoteric Practices, otherwise known as RENSEP. In this discussion, Bernd and Andrea talk about how this network came to be, why it was created, and the exciting work that they are doing. As the name suggests, RENESP is focused on working with practitioners in all areas of esotericism, and fostering the relationships between academic research and real-life practitioners. RENSEP is still in its early stages, having officially launched in 2023, and is a unique resource for both researchers and those outside of academia who are interested to interact with scholars, as well as to help educate the public about esoteric practices. Bernd-Christian Otto (b. 1976) is a scholar of religion. After gaining his PhD in 2009 at the university of Heidelberg (Germany) with an extensive study on the conceptual history of magic, Otto pursued his academic career at various universities, among them Heidelberg, Erfurt, Bochum, Leipzig, Erlangen (Germany) and Bergen (Norway). Otto is co-founder and permanent fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies ‘Alternative Rationalities and Esoteric Practices from a Global Perspective' at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (www.cas-e.de); he is a board member of the European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism (www.esswe.org); and he is co-founder, trustee and scientific director of the Research Network for the Study of Esoteric Practices (www.rensep.org). Otto's research focuses on magic and esotericism, where he combines different methodologies such as conceptual history, discourse analysis, social theory, ritual studies, qualitative interviews, participant observation, and practitioner-scholarship. His book publications include "Defining Magic: A Reader" (Routledge 2013), co-edited with Michael Stausberg; the duograph "Magical Manuscripts in Early Modern Europe: The Clandestine Trade in Illegal Book Collections" (Palgrave MacMillan 2017), co-authored with Daniel Bellingradt; and the anthology "Fictional Practice: Magic, Narration and the Power of Imagination" (Brill 2021), co-edited with Dirk Johannsen. Andrea Centore holds a master's degree in Translation Studies from the University of Mons-Hainaut (Belgium), and a master's degree in Religious Studies from the University of Amsterdam. His research explores the intersection of Jewish and Islamic esotericism through the perspectives of intellectual and global history, with a particular focus on Kabbalah and Sufi lettrism. In addition, Andrea has engaged with texts from a wide range of esoteric traditions including Islamicate occultism, strands of Western esotericism, and Nāth Tantric Yoga. He is the co-founder and managing director of the Research Network for the Study of Esoteric Practices (RENSEP), where one of his key aims is to foster a more systematic dialogue between the academic community and esoteric practitioners. Andrea is also an entrepreneur in the professional services sector.  We take a look at the website, and the different options available to the members. Not only are there blog posts and research updates available, but members can also take part in study groups and take part in livestreams with scholars and practitioners alike (titled “ask a scholar” and “ask a practitioner”). Another great opportunity is the ability to meet new people, forming connections with other members to foster communication and learning, growing one's own network of contacts in the process. RENSEP has also just launched an open-access, peer-review journal, too, called Praxis-Knowledge! RENSEP is a fantastic place to share and learn with other people with similar interests, and is one-of-a-kind with regard to online communities that offer grounded, interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed research and a wonderful platform for practitioners to engage with scholars and others who share the same interests. Bernd and Andrea have also very generously offered a 50% discount on membership for all viewers/listeners of Rejected Religion! Use the promo code RR50 when signing up at www.rensep.org! Patreon members also receive special discounts -- Tiers 1& 2 get 70% off on membership, and Tiers 3 & 4 get a FREE membership! This is a fabulous opportunity to join and start learning about esoteric practices, with access to information and resources that usually only are available to those within academia! Members can find their promo codes on the Patreon page. Kardec, a French educator, sought to bridge the gap between spirituality and science by codifying Spiritism—a system based on communication with spirits, reincarnation, and moral evolution. We examine his key works, including The Spirits' Book and The Mediums' Book, and discuss Spiritism's influence on French intellectual circles and its rapid growth in Brazil, where it evolved into a major religious movement. Join me as we explore how Kardec's Spiritism offers answers to profound existential questions, the nature of the spirit world, and the ethical framework it provides for understanding human suffering and inequality. ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult

This episode offers an exploration of the life, works, and esoteric system of Franz Bardon (1909-1958), a Czech occultist who significantly influenced 20th-century Western esotericism. Bardon's seminal trilogy—"Initiation Into Hermetics" (1956), "The Practice of Magical Evocation" (1956), and "The Key to the True Quabbalah" (1957)—provides a comprehensive guide to his unique approach to Hermetic magic, which emphasizes self-mastery, elemental equilibrium, and spiritual transformation. The episode analyzes Bardon's step-by-step methodology for developing the practitioner's mental, astral, and physical faculties, as well as his innovative interpretation of the Hermetic principles of correspondence and analogy. It also examines Bardon's syncretic integration of Eastern and Western spiritual practices, such as yoga, alchemy, and Kabbalah, into a universal system adaptable to various esoteric paths. ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult

Let's delve deep into the mystical and symbolic world of Babalon, a central figure within Thelema, the spiritual philosophy developed by Aleister Crowley in the early 20th century. Babalon, often referred to as the Great Mother, the Sacred Wh*re, or the Liberatrix, embodies profound aspects of the divine feminine, sexual liberation, and spiritual transcendence. We explore her multifaceted roles and meanings within Thelemic cosmology, where she complements cosmic entities such as Nuit, the sky goddess, and Hadit, the point of infinite possibilities. As a figure of both creation and destruction, Babalon's imagery is rich with symbols like the "Cup of Abominations," which she uses to transform base material into spiritual gold, epitomizing the alchemical process at the heart of personal and universal transformation. Significantly, Babalon is pivotal in crossing the Abyss in Thelemic mysticism, where she acts as the guardian demanding the dissolution of the ego. This leads to the ultimate spiritual rebirth of the magician into a state of unity with all existence. Her role extends into the practice of s@xual magick, a key aspect of Thelemic practice, where she represents the potent power of s@xual energy in spiritual enlightenment and transformation. Additionally, the episode covers the historical evolution of Babalon's imagery and significance through the 20th century, notably through figures like Jack Parsons and Kenneth Grant, who expanded her archetype in the contexts of their own magical practices and interpretations. Babalon's enduring legacy in contemporary Thelema, her influence on feminist and queer discourses within the occult community, and her depiction as a revolutionary figure against oppressive structures are also discussed, highlighting her relevance and adaptability in modern spiritual practices. This episode illuminates Babalon's crucial role within Thelema and showcases her as a symbol of empowerment and spiritual depth, challenging conventional notions of femininity and spirituality. This episode delves into the mystical and Masonic legacy of Count Alessandro Cagliostro, focusing on his creation of High Egyptian Freemasonry. Cagliostro, a figure shrouded in mystery and controversy, claimed esoteric knowledge and noble origins, quickly gaining notoriety across Europe as a healer and Freemason. We explore Cagliostro's introduction of the Egyptian Rite in Naples in 1777, which marked a significant departure from traditional Freemasonry by integrating mystical practices and the concept of spiritual and moral transformation. His rites catered to both men and women, incorporating beliefs in theism and the immortality of the soul, and outlined a path for redemption through spiritual, intellectual, and physical restoration. We also cover the specifics of Cagliostro's Masonic rituals, which were designed to elevate practitioners through a series of stages: from spiritual reawakening and intellectual renewal, emphasizing alchemy and theurgy, to achieving a divine connection. These stages culminated in the mastery of esoteric arts, enabling initiates to perform significant theurgical acts. CONNECT & SUPPORT

We scrutinize the foundational role of scholars like Mircea Eliade and Henry Corbin in shaping Western-centric esoteric narratives. Through the insights of Wouter Hanegraaff and Kennet Granholm, the episode urges a reevaluation of esoteric studies to embrace the richness of traditions that transcend the East-West dichotomy. It raises important issues related to cultural exchange, identity, and the aftermath of colonialism in shaping esoteric practices. In this episode we discuss the work of Kenneth Grant. Starfire Publishing: http://www.starfirepublishing.co.uk/ Inaccuracies in the discussion (courtesy of Michael Staley): 14:00 – Kenneth first came across Magick in Theory and Practice not in Watkins, but on a stall outside Schwemmers, a surrealist bookshop in the Charing Cross Road, just a few yards away from Watkins. 15:16 – Kenneth's father was not a clergyman, but a banker. Kenneth's mother's maiden name was Wyard, and many of the family male ancestors on that side had been clergymen. 31:17 – Achad believed not that the Aeon of Horus had ended, but that it continued but was augmented by that of Maat. A bit later in the interview, Chris does reflect this view. 39:50 – The transplutonic planet was called Isis, not Nuit. I think though that the confusion comes from Kenneth's naming of the Lodge as Nu-Isis, and he talks somewhere of Nuit-Isis. 44:25 – reference to Mike Magee's allegation that the first three volumes of the Typhonian Trilogies were fiction, Staley states he never heard anything like this. 59:55 – David Curwen, not Joseph Curwen, the latter being a character in Lovecraft's novel The Case of Charles Dexter Ward Become part of the Hermitix community: Hermitix Twitter - https://twitter.com/Hermitixpodcast Support Hermitix: Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/hermitix Donations: - https://www.paypal.me/hermitixpod Hermitix Merchandise - http://teespring.com/stores/hermitix-2 Bitcoin Donation Address: 3LAGEKBXEuE2pgc4oubExGTWtrKPuXDDLK Ethereum  Donation Address: 0x31e2a4a31B8563B8d238eC086daE9B75a00D9E74

In this episode we welcome back Keith Cantú for a wide ranging conversation on the history of the Theosophical Society and in particular its unique relationship with the modern history of yoga. We discuss the influence of figures like Helena Blavatsky and Henry Steel Olcott, as well as lesser-known South Asian Theosophists and Theosophy-adjacent authors and scholars. We discuss the impact of Theosophical publications on the global dissemination of yoga in English-print books and journals, a legacy still felt today in modern yoga circles. We conclude the conversation by previewing Keith's upcoming online course, YS 126 | Theosophy and Yoga.Speaker BioDr. Keith Edward Cantú is a historian of religions whose interdisciplinary research especially focuses on South Asian yoga, tantra, and the interface between Sanskrit and Indic vernacular languages like Bengali, Tamil, and Hindi, and on modern occult movements in Europe and North America such as Thelema and the Theosophical Society. He is currently both Research Affiliate at the Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard Divinity School, where he will begin a full-time postdoctoral fellowship in Asian Religious Traditions next June as part of the Transcendence and Transformation Initiative, and Visiting Assistant Professor in Religious Studies at St. Lawrence University. He previously was a research fellow at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg in the “Center for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences: Esoteric Practices and Alternative Rationalities from a Global Perspective” and Assistant Professor (postdoc) at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland in the project “Cultures of Patronage: India 1674–1890,” and received his doctoral degree in Religious Studies (South Asian religions) in 2021 from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Keith's first monograph, Like a Tree Universally Spread: Sri Sabhapati Swami and Śivarājayoga, has been published this year by Oxford University Press (Oxford Studies in Western Esotericism series), and he is actively engaged in reprinting and translating several previously unknown or largely forgotten Tamil and Hindi works of Sri Sabhapati Swami and of his gurus. In addition to work on the swami, he is the author of numerous chapters and articles as varied as an ethnography of Tantric songs and sādhana or “practice” in Bengali, Indological research on south Indian mantra and yoga practices at tumuli and temples and on the Sanskrit alchemical mythology of Srisailam, modern yoga and discourses of Orientalism and cultural authenticity, haṭhayoga as “black magic” in Theosophy, and Islamic esotericism in the songs of the Bāuls and Fakirs of Bengal. A scholar-musician, Keith regularly sings and performs the Bāul songs of the nineteenth-century Bengali humanist poet Lalon Fakir (Lālan Phakir, d. 1890) as well as Śyāmāsaṅgīt or “music for the dark Goddess,” which he learned directly from sadhus and sadhikas during immersive stays in Bangladesh and West Bengal, India over the past twelve years, and regularly co-teaches a course on Tantric meditation and its connection with this music at the Esalen Institute near Big Sur, California. English versions of many of Lalon's songs as translated by the late Carol Salomon can be found in City of Mirrors: Songs of Lālan Sā̃i, published in 2017 with Oxford's South Asia Research series, which Keith co-edited together with Dr. Saymon Zakaria.LinksYS 126 | Theosophy and Yogahttps://ucsb.academia.edu/KeithCantu YSP Ep 28 | Esotericism, Bauls, and Sabhapati Swami

In addition to the beautiful and radical drawings that Ezra creates, they are also a brilliant writer and researcher, and their mystical poetry and zines about Jewish folklore figures are marvelous as well. Ezra's most recent zine is called F*CK YOUR MAGIC ANTISEMITISM: A Lesser Key to the Appropriation of Jewish Magic & Mysticism, and it's a truly illuminating and educational treatise on the ways in which Jewish culture has been stolen from and exoticized by the Western Esotericism movement over centuries, and it is a must-read for Jews and non-Jews alike.
