Tracey Curtis-Taylor, (on the cover of the Winter OQ) is an adventurous aviator, who has retraced some of the most epic routes in flying history, from Capetown to London across the length of Africa, retracing Lady Heath's journey in 1928, and another from England to Australia, flying the same route as Amy Johnson in 1930. She now flies a 1940 Boeing Steerman, and joins the Commemorative Air Force in Camarillo in their events. Curtis-Taylor has created an educational program designed to get more women into flying, as the industry faces a dire pilot shortage and, with fewer than 5 percent of airline pilots as women, they need recruits. She wrote the book, "Bird," about her epic exploits. She is now based in Ojai. We talked about the Golden Age of Aviation, when the best engineers and pilots moved from the Wright Brothers' short hops to the first jet engines and breaking the sound barrier in 1947, an incredible period of progress and energy. She also talked about navigating the boys club of pilots, her crash landing, her upbringing between England and Canada, and much more. We did not talk about Keep Sespe Wild, Jeremy Saulnier films, or the "Magic Art of Tidying." You can learn more about Tracey from her website, BirdinaBiPlane.com

In a time of great social and political change, Mexico has elected its first female president. The country where women have only been allowed to vote for a few decades will now be led by a Jewish woman whose grandparents emigrated to the country after fleeing NAZI persecution during World War II. North and South Korea have been at odds with each other for more than seventy years. The North had taken the unusual step of displaying their displeasure with their neighbor to the south by intentionally sending large balloons filled with trash designed to eventually crash and make a mess that had to be cleaned up. North Korea has given their intention to stop the practice, but promise to resume the trashy flights if South Korea promotes propaganda against their regime.Young college athletes can be paid legally. The NCAA has agreed to a revenue sharing plan with colleges that will allow individual schools to compensate for their athletic participation without penalty, thereby changing the face of amateur sports. If a young person is interested in learning to fly there are many sources of information available for those interested in flight training. Organizations such as the Commemorative Air Force, Civil Air Patrol, and Reserve Officer Training Corps units in high schools and colleges are just some of the resources available to those who have an interest in aviation. Turbulence while flying is just as unwanted by the aircrew as it is the passengers. Sometimes severe turbulence is undetectable, therefore to avoid any big surprises, keep your seat belt fastened at all times. Meet two wingmen who personify sacrifice as well as mutual support. The Gouge

One C-47 troop carrier was so visible in the D-Day Invasion of World War II that it was emblazoned with its own message for Adolph Hitler: “That’s all… brother.”It’s been nearly 75 years since that day, and you might assume that one of the lead aircraft of the main invasion force would be on display in a museum somewhere – but you’d be wrong. A few years back, an Air Force historian named Matt Scales was researching the late Lt. Col. John Donalson of Birmingham, AL who was reportedly credited with piloting the lead aircraft that dropped the main group of paratroopers along the French coast in preparation for the assault on June 6, 1944.All told, 900 planes carried the message of “That’s all… brother” but Donalson’s was one of the leads because it was equipped with an early form of a radar system. When Scales dug deeper, he discovered that the plane – which had changed hands many times over the years – had never crashed or been damaged, and was actually sitting in an aircraft boneyard in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.Texas-based Commemorative Air Force preserves military aircraft and set to work on the plane, which was badly corroded and partially disassembled. After rebuilding the piston engines and adding “modern navigation and radio equipment and a fresh coat of paint,” it was air-ready once more, making its inaugural flight in February of last year. Now the C-47 will join other vintage planes at D-Day 75th anniversary ceremonies in June, including a staged reenactment where “paratroopers” will be dropped along the French coast at Normandy.

How can we inspire the next generation to pursue career paths that are both in demand and high-paying?     A lot of young people these days don't realize that there is a great career in being a pilot or an engineer. -Hank Coates   Resources For more aerospace industry news & commentary: http://northstaresg.com/ To learn more about Craig Picken and the NorthStar Group, visit http://northstaresg.com/.   Takeaways & Tactics Young people truly seek the role models that the previous generations had.   It's important to remember the amazing acts of heroism that real people did in the past. This gives hope to children who live in poverty or discouraging situations.   The United States is the current leader in aviation, but not for long. There's a world-wide demand for pilots and engineers, and we will lose the lead without new and upcoming talent.
