Benjamin B. Bolger has been to Harvard and Stanford and Yale. He has been to Columbia and Dartmouth and Oxford, and Cambridge, Brandeis and Brown. Over all, Bolger has 14 advanced degrees, plus an associate's and a bachelor's.Against a backdrop of pervasive cynicism about the nature of higher education, it is tempting to dismiss a figure like Bolger as the wacky byproduct of an empty system. Then again, Bolger has run himself through that system, over and over and over again; it continues to take him in, and he continues to return to it for more.

Carrie and Jessica set out to share their experiences sending kids off to college with new parents preparing to send kids to college for the first time. However, they quickly learn after asking their own kids for advice and then polling other young adults, that they had two completely different perspectives on what "being prepared for college" meant. In this episode, they share both what parents believe are the most important parts about being prepared for college and the young adult perspective on what is really important for a successful transition to college. This episode is intended to provide tips for both parents and college-bound kids on how they can best be prepared for getting involved on a college campus. We share lessons learned from current college students and college graduates about roommates, friendships, joining clubs, saying No, asking for help, and so much more. Parents provided guidance on more logistical things like move-in, packing/shopping lists, and legal forms. Both perspectives are important but took Carrie and Jessica by surprise as what kids viewed as "being prepared" vs. what parents thought couldn't have been more different. Kudos to our young adults as this episode will definitely teach us parents a thing or two!! Sent us text! We would love to hear from you!Everyone has a talent in something. It may be apparent or hidden inside of you, just waiting to come out. In a time of great social and political change, Mexico has elected its first female president. The country where women have only been allowed to vote for a few decades will now be led by a Jewish woman whose grandparents emigrated to the country after fleeing NAZI persecution during World War II. North and South Korea have been at odds with each other for more than seventy years. The North had taken the unusual step of displaying their displeasure with their neighbor to the south by intentionally sending large balloons filled with trash designed to eventually crash and make a mess that had to be cleaned up. North Korea has given their intention to stop the practice, but promise to resume the trashy flights if South Korea promotes propaganda against their regime.Young college athletes can be paid legally. The NCAA has agreed to a revenue sharing plan with colleges that will allow individual schools to compensate for their athletic participation without penalty, thereby changing the face of amateur sports. If a young person is interested in learning to fly there are many sources of information available for those interested in flight training. Organizations such as the Commemorative Air Force, Civil Air Patrol, and Reserve Officer Training Corps units in high schools and colleges are just some of the resources available to those who have an interest in aviation. Turbulence while flying is just as unwanted by the aircrew as it is the passengers. Sometimes severe turbulence is undetectable, therefore to avoid any big surprises, keep your seat belt fastened at all times. Meet two wingmen who personify sacrifice as well as mutual support. The Gouge

Is college pointless? Is an “elite education” more about networking than learning? Returning guest William Deresiewicz has been pondering these questions for more than a decade. They were the subject of his bestselling 2014 book Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life. That book has just been reissued in a 10th anniversary edition and in this episode, William talks with Meghan about what's changed (i.e. what's gotten worse) and what, if anything, can be done to make things better. They also discuss whether we need affirmative action for men, whether it's better to get a job waiting tables than go to college right after high school, and whether childless people have any standing to talk—or even care—about this stuff in the first place. GUEST BIO William Deresiewicz is an award-winning essayist and critic, a frequent speaker at colleges, high schools, and other venues, and the author of five books including the New York Times bestseller Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life, which will be published in a 10th-anniversary edition in May 2024.
