#826 What if skipping college at 16 and managing a business by 17 was actually the smarter path? In this episode, host Tara Williams sits down with her 17-year-old daughter Britlyn to talk about what it looks like to take an entrepreneurial path at a young age. Britlyn shares how she graduated high school two years early using California's High Set exam, and has since built a busy life managing a retail store, nannying, flipping furniture, and pursuing self-directed business education. The conversation gets refreshingly real as Britlyn opens up about the emotional challenges of forging a non-traditional path — including the pressure of peers heading to college, learning to set boundaries, and balancing a packed schedule with personal wellbeing. Tara and Britlyn also dig into practical topics like budgeting with apps, high-yield savings accounts, Roth IRAs, and why getting a job young is one of the best foundations for future entrepreneurship. Whether you're a teenager figuring out your next steps or a parent wondering how to raise financially savvy, emotionally resilient kids, this episode is full of honest insight and actionable takeaways! What we discuss with Tara & Britlyn: + Graduating high school 2 years early + Building multiple income streams at 17 + Emotional intelligence as a business foundation + Learning to say no to people + Jobs teaching what school can't + Budgeting with the Milo app + High-yield savings & Roth IRAs + Traveling to discover your true self + Raising financially responsible kids + Finding motivation when you're struggling Thank you, Tara & Britlyn! When Hilary was 18, her oldest sister, Kelly, died from a rare cancer called DSRCT (desmoplastic small round cell tumor). In the same year, Hilary left for college and her parents divorced - three life-altering events that reshaped her relationships, sense of stability, and the early years of adulthood.  In this episode, we talk about: Growing up as the youngest of three sisters and the creative, nurturing bond she shared with Kelly  Navigating Kelly's diagnosis, treatment, and death while still in high school  Trying to appear "fine" in college while carrying immense grief  The ways her family dynamics shifted after Kelly's death and her parents' divorce  How grief continued to evolve across developmental stages, from early adulthood into her mid-30s  The unexpected moments - like baking bread or bringing home a new pet – that bring new waves of grief  How her experience shaped her work as a therapist supporting others in pain  Hilary also shares what she wishes she had known about grief at 18, how exhausting it can be, and how she learned to make space for grief that shows up differently over time.

Men now account for just 2 out of 5 college degrees in the United States. Utah has been slower to this shift than the rest of the country, but what is going on with this trend? KSL Newsradio's Amanda Dickson asked her guests on A Woman's View. Her guests this week include Natalie Gochnour, Associate Dean in the David Eccles School of Business and Director of the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute at the University of Utah and Robbyn Scribner, Co-founder and Director of Outreach for Tech Moms.

The guys recap their Week 14 matchup which Cam’s New Orleans Saints won 14-11 on a blocked field goal attempt as time expired. Later, Kayvon shares how the last four games of this season will have a major impact on his long-term future with the Giants. The guys then discuss their thoughts on how coach speeches land in the locker room this late in a season. Benjamin B. Bolger has been to Harvard and Stanford and Yale. He has been to Columbia and Dartmouth and Oxford, and Cambridge, Brandeis and Brown. Over all, Bolger has 14 advanced degrees, plus an associate's and a bachelor's.Against a backdrop of pervasive cynicism about the nature of higher education, it is tempting to dismiss a figure like Bolger as the wacky byproduct of an empty system. Then again, Bolger has run himself through that system, over and over and over again; it continues to take him in, and he continues to return to it for more.

Carrie and Jessica set out to share their experiences sending kids off to college with new parents preparing to send kids to college for the first time. However, they quickly learn after asking their own kids for advice and then polling other young adults, that they had two completely different perspectives on what "being prepared for college" meant. In this episode, they share both what parents believe are the most important parts about being prepared for college and the young adult perspective on what is really important for a successful transition to college. This episode is intended to provide tips for both parents and college-bound kids on how they can best be prepared for getting involved on a college campus. We share lessons learned from current college students and college graduates about roommates, friendships, joining clubs, saying No, asking for help, and so much more. Parents provided guidance on more logistical things like move-in, packing/shopping lists, and legal forms. Both perspectives are important but took Carrie and Jessica by surprise as what kids viewed as "being prepared" vs. what parents thought couldn't have been more different. Kudos to our young adults as this episode will definitely teach us parents a thing or two!! ( or teach us parents ALOT)

Is college pointless? Is an “elite education” more about networking than learning? Returning guest William Deresiewicz has been pondering these questions for more than a decade. They were the subject of his bestselling 2014 book Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life. That book has just been reissued in a 10th anniversary edition and in this episode, William talks with Meghan about what's changed (i.e. what's gotten worse) and what, if anything, can be done to make things better. They also discuss whether we need affirmative action for men, whether it's better to get a job waiting tables than go to college right after high school, and whether childless people have any standing to talk—or even care—about this stuff in the first place. GUEST BIO William Deresiewicz is an award-winning essayist and critic, a frequent speaker at colleges, high schools, and other venues, and the author of five books including the New York Times bestseller Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life, which will be published in a 10th-anniversary edition in May 2024.
