Tracey Curtis-Taylor, (on the cover of the Winter OQ) is an adventurous aviator, who has retraced some of the most epic routes in flying history, from Capetown to London across the length of Africa, retracing Lady Heath's journey in 1928, and another from England to Australia, flying the same route as Amy Johnson in 1930. She now flies a 1940 Boeing Steerman, and joins the Commemorative Air Force in Camarillo in their events. Curtis-Taylor has created an educational program designed to get more women into flying, as the industry faces a dire pilot shortage and, with fewer than 5 percent of airline pilots as women, they need recruits. She wrote the book, "Bird," about her epic exploits. She is now based in Ojai. We talked about the Golden Age of Aviation, when the best engineers and pilots moved from the Wright Brothers' short hops to the first jet engines and breaking the sound barrier in 1947, an incredible period of progress and energy. She also talked about navigating the boys club of pilots, her crash landing, her upbringing between England and Canada, and much more. I chat with Yanira of Perfectly Wrapped Balloons about how having systems and good record keeping for your company really helps in case of a sale or big transition. Yanira moved her business into a new area, several states away from her previous home and walks us through how she negotiated the sale of her client list and essentially restarted her business. What I didn't expect to hear was all of the businesses she had even before moving Perfectly Wrapped Balloons! She also shares what her first steps were after the move and how she started networking again. And now, she feels like she's beginning to earn referrals at the same pace she did before moving. This week's episode is a little different because it's another group interview - this time with the ladies of the mastermind I'm in. If you've been listening to the bonus episodes you have probably heard a little bit about the idea of a mastermind, and today, we're sharing everything about ours! You'll get the name of the book that inspired it all, how Tiffany (Confetti Castle) determined who to invite, how many of us are in the group, how often we meet and details on the actual structure of our discussions.  Several in the group mentioned how they had some self doubt about whether they could contribute in a meaningful way, but you'll hear how that quickly diminished as our conversations got going. I've felt my business grow over the past couple of years, but there have also been some life changes that kind of made things feel a little out of whack. So in this episode, I share how I'm trimming the “fluff” and tuning up my business by going back to the basics! This process is actually inspired by my previous time as a 6th grade art teacher. So much of what we would cover was foundational principles. And I always found that without them, troubleshooting becomes much more difficult. So, I took this mindset and applied it to my garlands, framework, clutter, inventory, product offerings and finances. In some cases, I had introduced too many variables to the task. In others, I just didn't even notice the buildup. And in one scenario, the changes were a little bit out of my control. Listen in to hear what changes I made to my recipes and offerings, the bags I use at install, what I've committed to never using again, some good advice I got about retraining and my next step in this process.  So far, I now have less clutter, more efficiency, better consistency and more reliable profit margins. Welcome to your weekly UAS news update, we have 6 stories for you this week: DJI Ends Sync, AVSS Parachute for Mavic 3 Enterprise, GAO report on remote ID, University of Michigan sued for airspace rules, DJI Air 4 Leaks, and Public Safety responds to Stefanik proposed bills. First up, let's talk a pretty big story that happened at the end of last week after we published news update: DJI has ended their “Sync Flight Data” function as of this week. If you're unfamiliar with it, this feature allows flight records to be synced to the DJI cloud and imported into other apps such as AirData UAV or Aloft Air Control.  AirData and Air Control have posted information on workarounds, with AirData utilizing their app to synch data from the drone, and Aloft allowing for manual uploads of flight logs.  This move by DJI is only applicable in the United States and is likely a response to repeated accusation that the data is made available to the Chinese government. With the end of the program, law makers will now need to find new excuses to try to ban DJI. For more info, check out the links below. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has published a report this week about the implementation of remote ID. The GAO found that while RID is now mandatory, the FAA has not spent time educating law enforcement on the technology, with many departments reporting they knew nothing about it. The study also looked at law enforcement access to RID and aircraft registration, and the GAO noted that there is not currently an interface allowing law enforcement to access registration information. The report also mentions network remote ID technologies as a necessary solution to help law enforcement to "access real-time information needed to track and investigate unauthorized drone activity." . The report also stated that “Stakeholders representing a commercial drone group said that there is a general lack of willingness by industry to develop network-based Remote ID”. The GAO issued 3 recommendations to the FAA; develop resources to assist state, tribal, and local LE to use remote ID; develop a plan and timeline for a remote ID interface; identify a path forward for how to provide real-time, networked data about the location and status of drones. Note that Network Remote ID is a topic of discussion in the new FAA Reauthorization Act. We'll keep you updated if we see more. Fourth up, we have a lawsuit from the Michigan Coalition of Drone Operators against the University of Michigan. The lawsuit claims that the University has rules attempting to govern airspace above the campus and that these rules violate state and federal laws.  We'll have to wait and see how this one plays out but good on the Michigan Coalition for fighting for drone operators and their unencumbered access to the airspace. Hopefully this sends a message to other organizations trying to illegally restrict airspace access, sadly lots of universities are in this bag. Air 4 Leaks??? Lastly, 3 first responders associations have joined hands and published opposition to the DFR Act and the Countering CCP Drones Act. Drone Responders, the Law Enforcement Drone Association (LEDA), and the Airborne Public Safety Association (APSA) have issued a joint press release in opposition to Representative Stefanik's proposals.

Tamara has finally made it to her 50th state...Oklahoma!! She took an Oklahoma road trip to visit both Oklahoma City and Chickasaw Country in south-central Oklahoma, in partnership with Chickasaw Country and the Chickasaw Nation. Oklahoma City has a lot to offer as a stand-alone destination including the First Americans Museum and the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. Tamara stayed at the aLoft hotel in Bricktown, which is the entertainment district with plenty of restaurants, bars, shops, and the minor league baseball stadium and water taxis. Tabitha and I met randomly at FLOAT years ago when each of us were brand new to the balloon decor industry and both currently working as face painters. It's been so neat to see our businesses grow in their own ways (and in similar ways) since then. In this interview, Tabitha talks about some of that growth, but also the logistics of her legendary sorority install. First, we talk about how we both relocated our families to give room for our booming balloon businesses, and the inspiration that got us there. Then we move on to talk about her staff and the roles they play. She's set up a super impressive production system that gives each of them clear roles in the process. When we move on to chat about her sorority builds, you'll hear about the level of planning and surprise that's involved! Tabitha shares with us a big lesson she learned about pricing in the process because sometimes these huge jobs don't just multiply the level of work, they can actually exponentially increase it. Tabitha rented a storage space specifically for these sorority builds and tells us how that relationship has since benefitted her business, too. Huge kudos to her, her team and those who came in to help for this event! I'll admit - I was not prepared for all of the great advice Jo Jo gave in this interview! She and her team do all things event decor... tents, rentals, linens, chairs and of course balloons. She's built an incredibly successful business with her supportive connections in the community and I have no doubt you'll get inspired and learn something by listening to her story. Jo Jo tells us a bit about her background and how the business has grown to 13 employees and a brick and mortar location within just three years! We also get to hear about  all they offer for both installation / delivery and storefront options the very cool rotating schedule she uses with her team how she utilizes 17hats to assign workflow tasks to her employees her calendar and inventory platforms And you won't believe how much time she's been able to take away from their shop! She's able to do this by leaning on a couple of key positions: her part-time manager and her lead designer. Another thing that has contributed to her ability to step away is having her recipes right on the invoice for her team... an idea I totally want to steal! When I ask Jo Jo's opinion on what rentals to start with, she not only delivers on that question but gives an amazing tip on how to properly charge for any rental items you're selling. I was simply blown away by the success she's experienced and am looking forward to watching her business continue to excel.
