Jar Jar Binks—meant to be a lovable, floppy-eared character in a Star Wars prequel—brought the heat of both of Tatooine's suns unto the movie, the actor who played the character, and the entire Star Wars franchise. That sort of internet-sponsored hate was new, and it's now being examined in the podcast The Redemption Of Jar Jar Binks, hosted by Dylan Marron of the Conversations With People Who Hate Me podcast. Part of what's terrible sometimes is how easy it is for people to hate each other. And how hard it is for people to TALK to each other in meaningful ways when we disagree. And while it's certainly not a phenomenon that's brand NEW, the Internet has certainly made it easier for us to voice our dislike for people in ways that are… not always helpful or productive? Dylan Marron is the author of the book Conversations With People Who Hate Me, and in today's episode, Nora talks with him about why we are how we are, and how we could change. Wanna read the book? Digital creator Dylan Marron has racked up millions of views for projects like "Every Single Word" and "Sitting in Bathrooms With Trans People" -- but he's found that the flip side of success online is internet hate. Over time, he's developed an unexpected coping mechanism: calling the people who leave him insensitive comments and asking a simple question: "Why did you write that?" In a thoughtful talk about how we interact online, Marron explains how sometimes the most subversive thing you can do is actually speak with people you disagree with, not simply at them. The game that social media sets us up to play is a game that rewards outrage. It's a game that we win by being better than other players at dunking on each other, straw-manning each other, and assuming the worst in each other. The game itself must be transformed. And, we can also decide to step out of the game, and do something different. On this week's episode of Your Undivided Attention, we welcome Dylan Marron — who has been called by Jason Sudeikis "a modern Mr. Rogers for the digital age." On the internet, nobody seems to remember you're a real person. That's especially true for Michael James Schneider, an artist whose work you've probably seen online. Commonly referred to as “Balloon Guy”, Michael uses mylar balloons to spell out pithy phrases he then posts on the internet– and people both love and hate him for it. In fact, it can seem like Michael's haters outweigh the fans, at least online. In this episode, listen as Michael explores what could possibly be behind all the anonymous trolling that has turned him into one of Twitter's “main characters”, and how anonymity affects the kinds of conversations we can have with one another. Online comments sections have become synonymous with cruelty, hatred, bigotry, misogyny, homophobia, and the jerks who spew that kind of thing out. Most of us roll our eyes at that or, if at all possible, avoid even looking at that dispiriting part of the internet altogether. But Dylan Marron is not most of us. When his viral comedy videos led to strongly vitriolic comments aimed directly at Dylan, he started collecting those comments in what he called his Hate Folder. He wondered who these people were who were making them and what they were like in real life. This interest led to the podcast and book, Conversations With People Who Hate Me.Dylan was able to trace the haters, often through publicly available Facebook accounts, and get many of them to agree to talk on the record. In conversation, his subjects were often revealed to be, if not always apologetic, at least complicated people. In this episode, Dylan talks about what the comments and conversations have meant to his mental health and his view of the world.Get your copy of Dylan's book, Conversations With People Who Hate Me wherever books are sold. It's holiday time again, and this year feels different. Unlike the shelter-in-place aesthetic of 2020's holiday celebrations, many people are now vaccinated and hoping to take part in the sort of family and friend events that are more reminiscent of the prepandemic time. With that warmth and community, we all may find ourselves in another seasonal tradition: getting into an argument with people over the dinner table.Maybe it's a longstanding rivalry with a cousin, or a nosy aunt asking about your biological clock — or perhaps the uniquely 2020-2021 disagreements over masking, vaxxing and who actually won the election. Whatever your flavor of argument, host Jane Coaston and special guest Dylan Marron are here to help. Dr. Dorsey holds Rotary International’s highest honor, The Paul Harris Medal for Distinguished Service to Humanity, and is a “full member” of the Club of Rome. A graduate of the University of Michigan, Yale, and Johns Hopkins University, he is currently Senior Program Officer for Sustainability at the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. Dr. Dorsey is out there making change wherever he goes – which is just about everywhere, really – and today, he’s going to hold our hands and walk us through the history of environmental injustice in the United States (and beyond) – and how, ultimately, we can work together to make things better for future generations. We also have some BIG news to announce: we have been nominated as Best Podcast Host in the 2019 Webbys! We are so incredibly honored to be nominated with the likes of Serial, Conversations With People Who Hate Me, Ear Biscuits, and Pod Save The People. Adela chats with Dylan Marron, the creator behind the Conversations With People Who Hate Me podcast. His episode entitled Sissies and Flaming Queens was featured on our podcast playlist on Common Ground, along with episodes from Our Americana and The Spin. A little background on Dylan: he is an award-winning writer, performer, and video maker who focuses on social justice issues. He is the voice of Carlos on the hit podcast Welcome to Night Vale, an alum of the New York Neo Futurists, and the creator of Every Single Word, a video series that edits down popular films to only feature the words spoken by people of color. Dylan also created, hosted, and produced a number of shows on Seriously.tv, including Sitting in Bathrooms with Trans People, Shutting Down Bullsh*t, and the Unboxing series. Because of his work, Dylan receives a lot of negative messages on the internet. In his podcast, Conversations with People Who Hate Me, he calls some of the folks who wrote those messages to ask one simple question: why? The podcast takes contentious online conversations and moves them offline. In new episodes he will moderate conversations between people who have exchanged their own digital negativity. The podcast was selected as a Podcast Pick by USA Today & The Guardian. The show just won a Webby Award for Best Individual Episode and a Webby Honoree for Best Podcast Series. As if all of this isn’t enough, Dylan was ALSO a speaker at TED 2018 in Vancouver that took place just last month. Thanks for listening! If you have any feedback, email Adela at adela@podcastbrunchclub.com. Also, think about joining one of the many Podcast Brunch Club chapters worldwide or subscribe to the newsletter so you can get the playlist as soon as it’s published every month. Dylan Marron is internet famous. He makes clever and (actually) funny little Facebook-friendly videos about light topics like Islamophobia, masculinity, privilege. Which attract a *lot* of comments. Many loving and laudatory. Many… not. Like the message from a grandmother in North Dakota saying he deserved to die. The teenager saying he was the most pathetic human being he’d ever seen. A gay artist in Atlanta saying he was everything wrong with liberalism. At first Dylan was shaken. Then he was curious. So he started calling these people. And Conversations With People Who Hate Me was born. This week, the lovely Dylan Marron on the benefits of talking to our haters, and why it’s good for the country as well as your soul.

It’s been a few days since a white nationalist rally resulted in violent outbreaks and the death of a counter protester in Charlottesville, VA. Nerves are still pretty raw, and Dylan Marron has skipped this third week of his limits run podcast, Conversations With People Who Hate Me. It’s a constructive show, in spite of a somewhat cheeky title, but it simply didn’t feel write airing a that sort of idealogical back and forth in the wake of such a grave and fundamentally upsetting event. The show is tough to listen to in moments, but it feels important. It clear serves a purpose for Marron and a parade of guests who’ve sent him online hate mail — but it’s also a template for difficult conversations in an incredibly polarizing time. And Marron is the ideal host, both due to the notoriety he’s gained through web video and the insanely popular Welcome to Nightvale (where he voices the character Carlos), and because of the incredible patience he displays with his combative interview subjects. If you’re anything like me, you’ll find yourself yelling at the podcast while Marron patiently hears people out. In a long and wide ranging conversation, Marron discusses tackling difficult topics, being an ally and trying to love someone who hates you.
