Brad Fleischer is an actor, teacher, coach, filmmaker, producer, and founding partner of GhostLight Media. He originated the role of Doug in “Gruesome Playground Injuries” alongside Selma Blair. On Broadway, he starred opposite Robin Williams in “Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo,” opposite Tony Schaloub in “Golden Boy,” and played the title character in the Olivier award winning “Coram Boy.” On the screen, Brad has worked with Robert De Niro in “The Good Shepherd,” Scott Frank and Liam Neeson in “Walk Among the Tombstones”, Greg Nicotero on “The Walking Dead”, among many others. For 17 years and counting, he continues to run his own professional acting class in New York and Los Angeles, strictly through word of mouth. On this episode, he tells the story of how he came to a level of dedication similar to what athletics required, which he now passes on to his students. He talks about the difference between the visceral and the intellectual; the importance of finding and working with good actors that you can learn from; why it all comes down to focus, specificity, and commitment. We tend to associate the recovery of history's ‘lost' women with the advent of feminism, but, Sophie Smith writes, women's contributions to Western philosophy have been regularly rediscovered since at least the 14th century. She joins Tom to discuss this cycle of forgetting and what we can learn from the women who held their own alongside Plato, Descartes and Hume.Find Sophie's piece and further reading on the episode page: https://lrb.me/sophiesmithpodFind out more about Pace Gallery's upcoming exhibitions here: https://www.pacegallery.com/exhibitions/Find out more about Coram Boy at Chichister Festival Theatre here: https://www.cft.org.uk/events/coram-boy Hosted on Acast. US-born Zachary James is a Grammy award winning actor and musician, who has had a lustrous career across stage and screen, having originated several iconic Broadway roles and sung with the world's greatest orchestras and opera companies, including The New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra and NHK Symphony Tokyo to name a few.   He will be returning to the West End as ‘Hades' in the Tony and Grammy winning musical, HADESTOWN. The Broadway musical is making its long-awaited London premiere, and follows the entwining mythic tale of two love stories between Orpheus and Eurydice and that of King Hades of the Underworld and his wife Persephone. The show will open at the Lyric Theatre on 10th February, described by Vogue as ‘your next musical theatre obsession'.   After majoring in Musical Theatre at Ithaca College, James made his Broadway debut in CORAM BOY at the Imperial Theatre before playing ‘Thomas Hassinger' in the original cast of the Tony Award winning production of SOUTH PACIFIC (Lincoln Center). He then originated the role of ‘Lurch' in the Broadway musical of THE ADDAMS FAMILY (Lunt-Fontanne Theatre), followed by his professional operatic debut as ‘Abraham Lincoln' in THE PERFECT AMERICAN (Teatro Real) in Madrid, which was written specifically for Zachary by renowned composer, Philip Glass. He then revived the role on the West End for English National Opera and in Brisbane for Opera Queensland.   Following this, Zachary created the role of ‘Amenhotep' in the Olivier Award winning production of AKHNATEN on the West End for English National Opera, later reprising the role for The Metropolitan Opera and Los Angeles Opera. Other theatre highlights include the role of ‘John Claggart' in the Emmy Award winning PBS broadcast of BILLY BUDD (Des Moines Metro Opera), ‘Sweeney Todd' in SWEENEY TODD (Opera Omaha) and more.   Zachary made his first television debut alongside Tina Fey and Steve Martin as ‘Carl', a Federal Agent, on beloved American sitcom 30 ROCK before appearing on a number of series including MURPHY BROWN, LAW & ORDER: ORGANIZED CRIME, and THE BLACKLIST.

Jamila Gavin was born in the foothills of the Himalayas; her Indian father and English mother met as teachers in Iran and married in Mumbai. By the age of 12, she'd lived in an Indian palace in the Punjab, a bungalow in Poona - and a terraced house in Ealing, west London. Ealing was where the family settled in 1953; Jamila went on to study at London's Trinity College of Music, and to become a sound engineer and then a director in television. She didn't start to write until her late thirties, beginning a career distinguished by many awards for her novels, plays and short stories – around 50 books in all. It's a rich world of myths and fairy-tales, orphans and adventures, ranging from 15th-century Venice to the mountains of India. She's best known for Coram Boy, her prize-winning novel, later staged at the National Theatre, about the Foundling Hospital – to which Handel gave the royalties from his Messiah. In conversation with Michael Berkeley, Jamila Gavin reveals the shocking story, which inspired her to write her first book for children. Her books deal with serious themes: particularly slavery, both historic slavery and people-trafficking now. Reading them, you can forget that these are children's books; but, she says, any experiences which children suffer should also be experiences they can read about. Jamila Gavin's playlist includes Handel's Messiah, Tippett's A Child of Our Time, Schubert, Brahms, Stockhausen - and her favourite Night Raga.
