A Note for Jacob: Since my second podcast recording with Matt, I am pleased to report that General Admission Seating for the May 5 event is SOLD OUT!!   It is a pleasure to welcome actor Matt DeAngelis back to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast.  Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Matt grew up on showtunes and Boston sports. Matt studied theatre at the University of Southern Maine and The Boston Conservatory before heading down Route 95 to NYC in 2004. In June 2009, Matt got the call to make his Broadway debut in the Tony-winning production of HAIR with Tony Award winner Diane Paulus at the helm. Matt continued with that production, “Across the Atlantic Sea,” to the West End in the role of “Woof” and then launched the first national US Tour of HAIR and was seen back on Broadway in the “Summer of Love” revival of HAIR.Following his time with the hippies, Matt launched the first national tour of Green Day's AMERICAN IDIOT as the “Representative from Jingletown”. Matt's cross-country adventures continued in 2014 with the first national tour of ONCE, where he played “Svec” and five instruments. Over the last five years, Matt has been a veteran of almost 2,000 performances.   Thankfully, Matt returned home to Broadway (again with Diane Paulus) in the hit musical WAITRESS, where he starred opposite Tony Award winner Jessie Mueller, two-time Grammy winner Jason Mraz, and seven-time Grammy nominee and the show's composer, Sara Bareilles. He then toured the country with the WAITRESS National Tour as Earl opposite his real-life wife, Christine Dwyer, as Jenna. Upon returning from the road, Matt was a part of developing the World Premiere of The Secret Life of Bees at The Atlantic Theatre Company, directed by Tony Award winner Sam Gold. He also appeared in Orpheus Descending at Theatre for a New Audience.  Matt DeAngelis also started the Janice Jam in memory of his mother, Janice, who passed from metastatic breast cancer in 2022. This annual event channels the magic of Broadway to honor those we've lost, uplift those fighting, and fund critical research. This event serves as a yearly celebration of Janice, her love for theater, and raising money for those affected by metastatic breast cancer.   On May 5, 2025, a group of Broadway all-stars will join Matt and Christine for this event. Golden Globe and Oscar-winning actor Ariana DeBose, Tony winner John Gallagher, Jr., Tony-nominated actors Jeremy Jordan and Jenn Colella, Caroline Bowman, Kara Lindsay, Krysta Rodriguez, Omar Jose Cardona, Rachel Potter, and Stark Sands are expected to perform. On this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Matt DeAngelis previewed the 2025 Janice Jam, revealed this year's music director, and explained how you can support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jake-s-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.

It's a blast from the past as we come to you with another episode recorded prior to Tony nominations, where we discuss Suffs and Alice Paul's determination to "Finish the Fight" and get the 19th Amendment passed. You won't have to "Wait [Your] Turn" to see Suffs when you can hear us talk about it all right here! (spoilers ahead) -- The show that Christine talks about at the beginning is Lighthouse: An Immersive Drinking Musical (whose EP is definitely worth checking out!) If you (like us) saw Suffs on Broadway in early previews, you might be pleased to see that the horse Inez rides for the march now has a head! If you haven't seen Greta Gerwig's Little Women, be sure to do so! But this is the Amy March speech that Cindy references in relation to Doris in Suffs. Can't imagine Jenn Colella with shoulder-length blonde hair? Neither could we, but that's indeed what she was rocking when she was in Chaplin. -- Music featured in this episode: The Young Are at the Gates Wait My Turn The March/GAB/This Girl/Keep Marching How Long Keep Marching (solo) — Follow us on Twitter and Instagram @BottomlessBway, our blog at https://bottomlessbway.home.blog, or email us at bottomlessbway@gmail.com! Mickey-Jo Theatre Reviews

Play Episode Listen Later May 9, 2024 26:55

One of the shows Mickey-Jo recently saw during his recent two week trip to New York was SUFFS, the brand new Musical currently playing at the Music Box Theatre on Broadway. This is Mickey-Jo's ★★★★★ review of the musical. Suffs, the six-time Tony Award-nominated musical from Shaina Taub about the lives and legacies of unsung changemakers in the women's suffrage movement of 1920, is marching onto Broadway with producers Hillary Rodham Clinton and Malala Yousafzai. Just about century ago, the Nineteenth Amendment secured the voting rights of some women, largely thanks to key figures of the women's suffrage movement: Inez Milholland, Ida B. Wells, and Alice Paul, to name a few. However, this movement was not without its faults. With an honest, 21st-century lens, the Suffs musical examines both the crucial building blocks and the cracks in the foundation of the women's suffrage movement through the women that pioneered it. With a book and score by fast-rising composer Shaina Taub (also known for collaborating with Elton John on The Devil Wears Prada musical), Suffs off Broadway brings forth an exciting new voice in musical theatre. Taub now makes her Broadway debut after winning the 2014 recipient of the esteemed Jonathan Larson Award and earning acclaim with her work composing and starring in the Public's Twelfth Night and As You Like It musical adaptations. Tony Award nominee and two-time Obie Award winner Leigh Silverman (Violet) directs Suffs on Broadway. Alongside Taub in the cast is Tony Award winner Nikki M. James as Ida B. Wells, Tony Award nominee Jenn Colella as Carrie Chapman Catt, Grace McLean as President Woodrow Wilson, Hannah Cruz as Inez Milholland, Kim Blanck as Ruza Wenclawska, Anastacia McCleskey as Mary Church Terrell, Ally Bonino as Lucy Burns, Tsilala Brock as Dudley Malone, Nadia Dandashi as Doris Stevens, and Tony Award nominee Emily Skinner as Alva Belmont/Phoebe Burn. Rounding out the company are Hawley Gould as the Alternate for Alice Paul, Jaygee Macapugay as Mollie Hay, and Laila Drew as Phyllis Terrell/Robin. The ensemble will feature Dana Costello as well as Jenna Bainbridge, Monica Tulia Ramirez, and Ada Westfall making their Broadway debuts. The cast will also include Christine Heesun Hwang, Kirsten Scott , Housso Semon , and D'Kaylah Unique Whitley. • 00:00 | introduction 02:14 | overview / synopsis 07:02 | the material 15:38 | performances • About Mickey-Jo: As one of the leading voices in theatre criticism on a social platform, Mickey-Jo is pioneering a new medium for a dwindling field. From a comedian in LA to a Broadway veteran in NYC, Jenn Colella is driven by connection and joy, and shares how she is moving through the shifts in her career as they come, including her latest podcast appearance on The Flame: An Original Podcast Musical. Jen Colella is a comedian, actress and singer perhaps best known for her Tony Award nominated performance as Captain Beverley Bass in Broadway's Come From Away; a role she originated, earning her Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Awards. Other Broadway credits include High Fidelity, Chaplin, If/Then, and Urban Cowboy (her Broadway debut). Jenn's Off-Broadway credits include Closer Than Ever, Slut! the Musical and Side Show. She also has several television credits, including appearances on All My Children, The Good Wife, and Elementary. Jenn can now be heard as one of the leads in The Flame, an original romantic comedy musical podcast on the Broadway Podcast Network. Growing up just outside Charleston, South Carolina, where there wasn't a great deal of theatre, Jen quickly became a “choir nerd” eager to sing anywhere she could. But while watching a production of Phantom of the Opera in high school, something clicked - she thought “I can do that. I need to do that”. Jenn chronicles her time in undergrad at Columbia College, during which she worked at an insurance company, was the lead singer in a rock band, and a company member at the only professional theatre at the time called TrustUs Theater. She shares her journey from grad school to stand-up comedy, recalling trips to LA watching sets at the Comedy Store and Laugh Factory, and encouragement by people “to just write a set” and try to get up there, and how she did. Jenn also opens up about her process for developing a character based on someone who actually exists in real life (namely Captain Beverley Bass), and the immediate kinship she felt upon meeting Captain Bass for the first time.  In this episode, we talk about:  One of her earliest memories, which connected music to joy Embracing downtime and learning to adapt during COVID-19 Her love for the rehearsal room The Flame, developed by an LGBTQ identifying creative team The courageousness stand-up comedy offered her Witnessing Captain Beverly Bass watch Come From Away Connect with Jenn: IG: @jenncolella Twitter: @jenncolella Subscribe/listen to The Flame Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. In this past year, as most actors and artists were forced to stay at home, we found new ways to keep creating. The most obvious is the explosion of zoom readings and productions of both new and existing works. Others discovered this medium of podcasting, and in just one year the number of podcasts doubled. But in today's episode, in honor of Pride Month, I'm talking with two women who set out to explore a relatively new art form, the podcast musical. Prior to graduation, Bowman toured with the hit musical Fame in China, and performed as Rizzo in Grease in Turkey. She was also a performer with the Young Columbians. Shortly following that, Bowman returned to the states as Lady of the Lake in the Spamalot national tour. Very shortly after the Spamalot tour and her move to New York City, Bowman was offered an ensemble role in Wicked, understudying Elphaba. Bowman left Wicked to take part in originating a new musical Kinky Boots in 2013, but Bowman left Kinky Boots shortly after its Broadway premiere to join the Evita national tour as Eva Peron in 2013. Almost immediately following the conclusion of the Evita tour in October 2014, Bowman was offered the starring role of Elphaba in Wicked, beginning December 16, 2014, replacing Christine Dwyer in the role. However, in late February, it was announced that due to an injury Bowman sustained, Christine Dwyer was brought back for a limited four-week engagement as Elphaba. Jennifer DiNoia was also brought back for a limited time, until Bowman returned to the show in early April. On August 18, 2015, it was announced that Bowman will be departing Wicked (musical) in mid-September, with Rachel Tucker replacing her. From April 30 – May 8, 2016, Bowman reprised her role as Eva Perón in the Vancouver Opera's production of Evita, replacing the previously announced Jenn Colella. As part of the celebrations for the 45th anniversary of the Columbia Center for Theatrical Arts, Bowman was a narrator in a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Toby's Dinner Theatre. It was announced on May 7, 2019 that Bowman will play Elsa in the national tour of Frozen. Welcome to The Rock! This week, we're tackling the 2017 smash hit Come From Away! When American airspace was shut down on September 11, 2011, 38 planes carrying nearly 7,000 passengers were forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland. For five days, the residents of the town took care of these strangers, Come From Aways as they were called. 10 years later, writers Irene Sankoff and David Hein went to Gander to meet the real-life people behind this now famous act of human kindness, and what resulted was this heartwarming musical.  For this episode, we too talk to some of the real-life people including Claude Elilott, the Mayor of Gander then and now, and Captain Beverley Bass, whose pioneering life story is told in the show-stopping song "Me and the Sky." We also chat with Sankoff and Hein, Tony-winning director Christopher Ashley, actors Jenn Colella and Caesar Samayoa, the producers, scenic designer and more as we chart the musical's journey from a Canadian college workshop to Tony-nominated hit.

She talks about being a working single mom, shares stories from the rehearsal room, and talks about bonding with co-stars Idina Menzel, Anthony Rapp, and Jenn Colella.

Bonus Episode #6: Hey everybody, it's time for another episode celebrating Raw Impressions! This organization enables artists to produce new projects VERY quickly, which is how I met my lovely guest star of the day, Alysha Umphress.Alysha, a recent graduate of The Boston Conservatory, made a splash last year at the Chelsea bar, XL, winning their American Idol-type competition, XL Star. (Check out her rendition of "Over the Rainbow" recorded live in the XL Star finals.)I fell for Alysha this past March, when she was one of the cast members assigned to me when I wrote a ten-minute musical for Raw Impressions Music Theatre #20. My collaborator for that project, playwright Chantal Bilodeau, and I came up with a piece called "The Living Room OCD." Alysha played a lesbian stalker chick who broke into her true love's perfect little house while she was away on vacation, tied up her house-watcher, and wreaked havoc on the place. When the show begins, the homeowner is just returning and discovering the damage, the bound-and-gagged housewatcher, and Alysha singing this song: "You're Not Perfect Anymore." Recorded 5/16/06. Reminder: this is Raw Impressions, i.e. I had two days to write this score. Raw.This episode is particularly timely because:a) Alysha's going to be appearing with me in a Jeff Blumenkrantz Songbook concert this Friday (5/19) at 7PM at The Duplex! My other special guest stars will be David Perlman (one of the stars of my Raw Impressions/RIPFest movie, Freefall) and **just added!** the amazing leading lady of Urban Cowboy, Jenn Colella. For reservations, call (212) 255-5438.andb) I'm going to be making my Raw Impressions acting debut in a RIPFest #8 movie musical this coming week! Screenings are 5/23-24 in New York and 5/23 only in Los Angeles. It's amazing what people are able to create, with only 16 days... Check it out!

Episode #15: Jenn Colella gives new meaning to the word "irresistible." The second I laid eyes on her, I fell hard, and the love affair continues. I daresay that goes for anyone who's ever met her. She is the most fun-loving, open-hearted, life-affirming person working in the theatre, not to mention ridiculously gorgeous and outrageously talented. She made her big Broadway debut in the lead role of Sissy in Urban Cowboy, and I was the lucky duck who got to write her first song in the show, "Another Guy," which she sings on the podcast today. Recorded 4/2/06.Seems like playing Sissy in Urban Cowboy started a casting trend for Jenn, as she subsequently appeared in workshops of The Great American Trailer Park Musical and Ring of Fire, the Off-Broadway production of Slut, the musical, as well as Twyla Tharp's new piece, The Times They Are A-Changin', which recently finished its premiere engagement at The Old Globe Theatre in San Diego. Let's hope that this show (or High Fidelity, another upcoming Broadway-bound musical) will put Jenn back on Broadway where she belongs. In the meantime, if you act fast (i.e. tonight), you can catch Jenn singing with the amazing Jason Robert Brown at Birdland, April 4th, where you can hear another one of her original songs from Urban Cowboy, JRB's "Hopalong Heartbreak."
