Some people build businesses on big ideas—others on big hearts. Sometimes, the best business plan is just knowing how to help people. Music might not be the first thing you think of when it comes to helping people, but for Vanessa Lomas, it’s her love language…or maybe help language. Vanessa is the owner of TheraCare Music Therapy. Ninety percent of TheraCare’s clients are autistic, have down syndrome or cerebral palsy. The idea behind music therapy is that it can help people express or cope with their feelings. That can be a powerful mode of connection, for instance, for people with autism. Vanessa is a military kid who’s lived all over the place. She landed in Lafayette in 2014 and has made it her mission to support people like her brother, who is autistic and nonverbal. She holds a bachelor’s degree in music therapy from William Carey University and a master’s in music and music therapy from Florida State University. She is a Board-Certified Music Therapist and also specializes in neonatal music therapy. Vanessa is also involved with CYT and volunteers at her church’s children’s ministry. Roy Hebert knows a thing or two about business. He’s been in banking, finance, and the oilfield, and now he’s giving that knowledge away for free. Roy is a mentor with SCORE, a nationwide organization that helps entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses. A Kaplan native, Roy attended UL for both his undergraduate degree and MBA. His career spans decades in the financial sector, including roles in commercial banking, corporate finance, and consulting. Roy is an adjunct professor at SLCC, and that’s where he discovered SCORE, a program of the U.S. Small Business Administration. SCORE, an acronym for Service Core of Retired Executives is a free service that connects experienced business leaders with burgeoning entrepreneurs. Roy says his clients come from all walks of life and range in sector and scale. They could be starting a landscaping business or getting an oilfield service company off the ground. #234: Leading an Ethical School with Dr. Nason Lollar Description:Today's guest has developed a framework and language around professional conduct, which he defines as “my contribution to our culture of learning.” Cool. Tom Huebner has been described in many ways throughout his career, an energetic instructor, an inspiring professor, a trusted mentor, and a visionary leader. A native of Kansas City, Missouri Huebner earned a bachelor's degree in communication and English from Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri, a master's degree in speech communication from the University of Georgia and a doctorate in communication from the University of Southern Mississippi. He also graduated from The University of Alabama's Community College Leadership Academy. An educator for more than 30 years, Huebner began his professional career in 1990 at Southwest Baptist University as an instructor and assistant director of speech and debate. His first experience in Mississippi began in 1994 where he became an instructor of communication and director of speech and debate at William Carey University in Hattiesburg. At Carey, Huebner progressed from instructor to assistant professor to director of admissions and recruiting. Huebner's ascent into higher education administration really began at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, Tennessee in the early 2000's as he moved consecutively from assistant professor and director of speech and debate to become dean of admissions, vice president of enrollment management, and vice president of student affairs. Moving to Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 2010, Huebner was responsible for all student services of the College and began the pursuit of a presidency. Just five years later, he was named president of East Mississippi Community College. During his tenure at EMCC, the community college was twice named an Aspen Top 150 community college and was listed as the nation's 3rd best community college by SmartAsset. The community college was also one of only four nationwide selected by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to receive an InsideTrack grant. Huebner was also instrumental in the production of the Netflix documentary, Last Chance U, an Emmy nominated documentary series based on the redemption of disadvantaged students through the college's football program. Dr. Thomas Huebner became the third president of Meridian Community College on July 1, 2018. Since arriving at Meridian Community College Huebner has hit the ground running. In addition to leading efforts to tell the MCC story and elevate the presence of the institution, he has worked to secure multiple grants, including substantial awards for advanced manufacturing, has developed relationships with industry and educational partners, moved the College to develop a number of new industry-relevant programs, renovated campus facilities, implemented a new strategic planning process, and received the Phi Theta KappaPresident's Paragon Award. He was recently named top 10 over 50 for Meridian and Lauderdale County by the Meridian Star and was recently recognized by the Mississippi Business Journal as one of Mississippi's top CEOs.
In this new series of Soul Stirrings, Paul is joined by a co-host, Brandon Knight of William Carey University, to discuss God Talk and the manipulative uses of spiritual language. Many Americans can easily recount some of the historic atrocities committed by Christians in the “name of God." But God Talk is also used in less atrocious, yet still manipulative, ways in everyday communication with family and friends, clients and co-workers. After some basic definitions are offered, several examples of God Talk will be analyzed in hopes of discovering solutions that seek to honor the name of God as well as the agency of our neighbors.
Despite facing some immense challenges during his time as Athletic Director of William Carey University, DJ Pulley has still been able to produce a winning atmosphere and national recognition for his department and the university through two main principles - patience and perseverance. As the needs and attributes of incoming student-athletes continue to change, DJ has some great insight on how to develop the emerging adults into the leaders needed for tomorrow.DJ earned his bachelor's degree from William Carey in 2003 and his MBA in 2004. In early 2022, the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics named him as a Cushman and Wakefield AD of the Year.
Most often when we think of robots we think of sci-fi movies, comic books, or video games. Something trying to take over the world or something that is larger than life. However, robots are becoming more common in our times and are a reality. As Christians, we don't often think of that but what should we think about robots and A.I.? Is it something we should concern ourselves with and how should we as Christians deal with robots and A.I.? Our guest, Joshua Smith, actually has a lot to say on that topic! Josh serves as the Senior Pastor of a Southern Baptist Church in Mississippi. He is a graduate of William Carey University, where he earned a B.A. in Religion. He holds an M.T.S from Gateway Theological Seminary. He is a recent graduate of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he earned a Ph.D. in Theology. His dissertation focused on a critique of Robotic Futurism and the potential of Dehumanization. We focus our conversation on why he wrote his dissertation on robotics and why we as Christian should be concerned with the ethics with robots! I hope you are as challenged as I was to see that all things were made with a purpose and yes that includes robots! Rev. Carolyn Abrams is perhaps best known as the mother of voting rights advocate, Stacey Abrams, but she has accomplished much more than being the matriarch of a dynamic and successful family. After earning her first master's degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in Library Science, she spent fourteen years working as the director librarian for William Carey University. She then answered the call to ministry, joining her husband Robert in attending the Emory University Candler School of Theology, where both received Master of Divinity degrees. Abrams grew up in Hattiesburg during the 1950s and 60s. In this episode she recalls attending segregated schools and being barred from entering whites-only establishments. Growing up in the segregated South, young black students had limited job opportunities available to them. Abrams explains how parents and teachers stressed education as the key to a better future. Abrams and her husband encouraged their six children to earn good grades and to aim high in life. She discusses the accomplishments of each child and the role education played in their success. As a lifelong resident of Hattiesburg, Abrams has witnessed many positive changes in her community. She describes the challenges of today and the need for young people to return to the Church. Jonathan Frelix and Jacob Bouie discuss so much with me in this episode. We talk internal reflection, being a sheep or a wolf, and religion. Specifically Christianity. We discuss the answers God's word delivers to us in determining what sin is. Do we stick with Christianity? No, we discuss "vibes" and "vibrations." We talk about the universe and universalism and religion collision. Jonathan is a William Carey University student, and a violinist. Dr. Ben Burnett served as a school administrator through Hurricane Katrina but he never imagined he would face two more powerful tornadoes later in his career. In Part 1 of our interview about what to do when a natural disaster strikes your school district, Dr. Ben Burnett reflected on how he and his colleagues kept students and teachers focused after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Burnett was the principal of a middle school in Lamar County Mississippi during the devasting hurricane, but a few years later he took on the responsibilities of Lamar County Superintendent. But even Hurricane Katrina could not fully prepare Burnett for what happened to one of his high schools just eight years after Katrina. Dr. Ben Burnett On February 10, 2013, Oak Grove High School, near Hattiesburg Mississippi was struck by a powerful EF4 tornado that cut a path three-quarters of a mile wide and had maximum sustained winds of 170 mph. The tornado demolished a field house and caused significant damage to much of the large high school. Burnett says that as he first rounded the corner to survey the damage at Oak Grove High School, he thought, nobody ever prepared him on how to manage in this situation. Fortunately, the storm struck on a Sunday, and while there were a few people in the school, there were no fatalities or injuries. However, the cleanup expenses would run into the millions and the disruptions to instructional time and extracurricular activities had to be addressed. By 2017 Burnett had retired as Superintendent and he was now the Dean of Education at William Carey University. Unbelievably, a powerful EF3 tornado struck at Burnett's new job site. It was his third natural disaster. In the early morning hours of January 21st. The tornado packed winds of 145mph and damaged 58 of the 60 buildings on WCU's campus. Remarkably, Burnett's William Carey University story is one of resileence. They adminstration moved quickly and had students back in class in just two days. To hear the full story on how Dr. Ben Burnett responded to both tornadoes, listen to Episode 139 of the Class Dismissed Podcast. This is part two of a two-part interview. Tune in to Episode 138 to hear Burnett talk about Hurricane Katrina. You can listen to the latest episode of Class Dismissed on iTunes here. All Rights Reserved. Class Dismissed Podcast 2017 – 2020

"The start of something big" When most students attend a university to get a medical, nursing, or pharmacy degree, they typically participate in a residency program. So it should come as no surprise to hear that Universities around the country are now testing similar programs for teachers. Over the next several years, Dr. Ben Burnett, of Williams Carey University, will be piloting a teacher residency program in South Mississippi. Dr. Ben Burnett. Dean, School of Education, William Carey University "Doesn't it make sense that somebody taking care of our children would go out and do a residency within the school building and see what that's like?" says Burnett. Burnett knows that a teacher residency program won't just better prepare future teachers; he believes it will improve teacher retention. He says the nation is down 35% in undergraduate teacher education over the last decade. But this year WCU is experiencing a 25% spike. "We're hoping to be on the start of something big." With the teacher shortage the way it is in Mississippi and throughout the country. Burnett is optimistic that better training could help combat the national teacher shortage. "Even if we don't produce more teachers, which I hope we'll do. We'll have better retention," says Burnett. When do undergrads move to the classroom? Students can apply for the residency once they've completed two years of course work. The undergraduates at WCU are integrated into two participating school districts on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The program at WCU is in conjunction with the Mississippi Department of Education and funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The residency offers two major selling points for students. Students get their foot in the door at a solid school districtThe grant from the Kellogg foundation covers their tuition for two years "That will also help the longevity of the teachers," says Burnett. " If you have a lot of outstanding student loans, it's difficult to pay those back on a teachers salary." Burnett says students lined up to enroll in the program and they had somewhere between 200 and 300 applications. Is the program sustainable? Burnett knows the grant money may not be available forever, but he's optimistic that the program is sustainable, with or without having the cost of tuition covered. He says that educating with residency programs allows for local school districts to "grow their own." As Dean of the School of Education at WCU, Burnett is putting serious thought into educating all teacher undergraduates with some form of a residency program. "I think the future of teacher education needs to be less inside our buildings and more inside of a school," says Burnett. It is hard to imagine the size of the country with 1.3 billion people. That is the approximate population of India. In healthcare, the country faces many challenges: a big shortage of doctors, especially in rural areas, big differences in access to healthcare, the influence of pollution and environment on population health. The healthcare system is private, the majority of expenses - 60 to 70 percent - are out of pocket. But when it comes to digital health, India looks like a promise land for developers. According to GSMA, India is now the world’s second-largest smartphone market, overtaking the US in the first half of 2016. By 2019, a third of that population - which amounts to 430 million people - is supposed to own a smartphone. Estimates of the number of mobile internet users by 2019 vary from 500 to 600 million people. In this episode, Prabhu Guptara - a Distinguished Professor of Global Business, Management & Public Policy at William Carey University, India, a Member of Boards of different companies in the UK, Germany, and Switzerland - talks about societal, political and technological challenges in terms of digital health influence on population health. Session 59 In this episode, Ryan takes a question directly from the OldPreMeds.org forums and delivers the answer right here to you. This week’s question is an interesting one:choosing which schools to apply to. OldPreMeds Question of the Week: “I was looking into residency match rates of DO versus MD programs using the school website and comparing them to an NRMP. I noticed that the 2016 data for DO match rate was 80.3% versus 93.8% for MD. When I look at the data from DO schools like Western and Touro I find reports of 90% to 100% match rates. Is the difference because of the schools and the 80.3% looks at all DO programs? Should one look at the individual school match rate instead of the overall match rate when choosing a program? If anyone has information about the discrepancies please let me know”. (2:00) Questioning the data I dug into this a little bit to figure out where this person was getting their data. I pulled up the information from the American Osteopathic Association Intern and Residency Registration Program match data; this is the matching system for DO students. I also looked at the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) that matches for MD residencies. So just to backtrack and give you a little information: two different tracks, DO and MD. A DO is doctor of osteopathic medicine, MD is a medical doctor, just two different types of medical school. You both end up being physicians at the end of the day; there's really no difference and actually, their residency programs are merging. Not a lot of information has come out on how that's going to happen, but I believe the year is 2020 when that happens. Therefore, much of this information, by the time you start medical school and as you're listening to this, perhaps won’t matter because much of it will have changed. However, I still wanted to reply to this question because I thought it was a good one. Here’s my take on this question: (3:20) Match Rates This student is claiming the 2016 data for DO match rate was 80.3%. However, when I bring up the 2016 match data, I see an unmatch rate of 13% - which is a match rate of 87%. So I'm not sure where this student was coming up with 80.3%. If you just look up DO match rates for 2016, the website comes up and it's the match data for the DO applications and has a list of every school. The highest school on here, the highest non-match school is at 28.6%, so that's a match rate of 71.4% which isn't very good at all. That school is Touro University in Nevada (TUNCOM) There are several different Touro schools and that is the worst one by far. The next closest one on here isn't far behind at 26.9% non-match, and that one is William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Mississippi. (5:15) Matching vs. Unmatched Percentage matched vs. Percentage Unmatched. The way that the AOA lists this, is they have percentage matched, percentage non-matched, and then percentage of non-participants. When you look at percentage matched, it's only 40.9% and you might think, 'Wow that's crazy, how come nobody's matching?' But then when you combine that with non-participants, DO students that are matching outside of the DO residency matching program (as a DO student you can match through the MD matching program and you're counted as a non-participant). When you look at the percentage matched at 40.9% and the percentage non-matched at 46.1%, the result is 87%, which is obviously the leftover from the non-match of 13%. So 87% of DO students are matching. (6:35) Is every spot getting filled? Not every prelim spot is getting filled. Now here's something to think about when it comes to residency matching. When I looked at the NRMP match data, they have the total match of 96.3% of all US spots filled. So not every residency spot is getting filled, which is not good. And when you look at it, you have several different types of programs that are more than likely not getting close to getting filled, and those are prelim spots. If I look at surgery prelim- and a prelim is a PGY1 year only. It's basically saying, 'Hey come to our prelim spot, and try out for our residency.' It is basically if you didn't match anywhere else, then a prelim spot you can hopefully come into our program after you do well your prelim year. If you look at surgery prelim according to NRMP, it only filled 64.4%. There were a lot of spots available. (8:00) Know yourself, and your competition If you’re not matching, you are probably trying to match into a very competitive program that you aren't qualified to match in. What does this all mean? It means that a lot of people that aren't matching are probably trying to match into a very competitive program that they aren't qualified to match in. It's very similar to trying to get accepted to Harvard, Yale, and Wash U medical schools when you have a 3.0 GPA and a 500 on the MCAT. You're dreaming a little bit too big, but it also could be that that year that you're applying for something is a very competitive year and a lot of people are trying to match into it and you just didn't make the cut. Typically, the students that go through the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP, formerly called Scramble) get notified during the time period before the match and are notified that you did not match. You then enter this SOAP program and you find residencies that didn't fill, and a lot of them are going to be PGY1 only spots. Some of them may be internal medicine spots and you wanted to do something else besides internal medicine. However, there are these other spots, and if you want to match into one of those programs you can go do that. There's a whole separate system outside of the normal match program to allow students that didn't match to get into a program so that they can continue their post-graduate training, which is necessary if you want to be a doctor here in the US. (9:38) Know when to ask questions, and which ones to ask My personal belief? You shouldn't look at residency matching rates for choosing which schools to apply to, with one exception. Look at those huge outliers like Touro Nevada, like William Carey University, and ask yourself: Why is their match rate so low? Are they a brand new school and they're just getting ramped up Perhaps their first round of students that they let in weren't the best students? Are they just getting their curriculum under control? Are they under some sort of probation because their curriculum isn't training students well enough? Then call the school and say, 'Hey I noticed your residency match rates are pretty terrible,' and find out from them what they have to say. If it's a school that you're interested in going to because the location is perfect for you, consider it. (10:45) Past performance does not predict future performance. It's like the stock market: it doesn't matter what the stock market did yesterday, it's not going to determine what it does tomorrow. It's a good predictor, it's a good kind of rule of thumb to think about it, but things change, people change, professors change, and you - the person that is actually learning and studying and figuring this all out, is one of the biggest variables to all of this. So if you are motivated, if you are driven, if you are determined to get whatever residency spot you want, then you will probably do well. You cannot rely on the school to help you match somewhere. The school is there to help support you, but you need the drive and motivation to do it yourself. (11:32) My Bottom line When it comes to residency matching and picking schools, look at those huge outliers, but outside of that I wouldn't look at residency programs to determine where you want to go to school. Locations, curriculum and many other factors come into play.
