Nursing students across the country took to the streets yesterday amid rising financial pressures and lack of job vacancies. They've raised concerns about the lack of financial support for nurses-in-training during full-time placements - with many working up to three months with no compensation. Student nurse Shannyn Bristowe says there's a significant number of students who drop out of training due to financial reasons. "We need to realise that the cost of living has gone up by such a significant amount that while you're studying for your degree - you don't actually have the costs to meet the basic necessities of living or supporting yourself or your whanau." Always wear a seatbelt. That's the message that Laura McKenney wants the world to hear loud and clear. As an 'unbelted' passenger in a catastrophic car accident in January 2023, the then 21-year-old student nurse was flung from a friend's vehicle, before the same car rolled back over the top of her. Remarkably, none of Laura's bones were broken. But the severe head injury she sustained, along with an injury-induced stroke, nearly cost Laura her life. Her family was told she might never wake up. That in all likelihood, she would never again walk or even talk. Today, Laura is walking her way through her second Oceans to Outback RFDS fundraising challenge. And she and her sister Emily are ready to tell their story. **** If you'd like to join Laura's army and the other incredible fundraisers involved in this year's Oceans to Outback, simply head to Royal Flying Doctor Service : Home (oceanstooutback.org.au) And thanks so much for listening to this episode of the Flying Doctor Podcast. “It's not often in life that you find something that gives you this feeling, but I'm really so fortunate to have found mine, and I know this is only just the beginning, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds. I definitely owe a lot of that to the Oncology Nursing Society for opening up all those doors for me and really getting me into this field.” Samantha Paulen, BSN, RN, told Jessica MacIntyre, DNP, MBA, APRN, AOCNP®, 2024–2026 ONS president, during a conversation about student nurses entering the oncology field. MacIntyre spoke with Paulen and Tayler Covino, BSN, RN, both recent graduate nurses, about why they chose oncology nursing as a specialty. Highlights From This Episode “I was first drawn to oncology nursing freshman year of high school when my grandmother, who was my ultimate best friend, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and by the time they had caught it, it had metastasized to nearly every surrounding organ. And as I mentioned earlier, my grandmother was a nurse. So being a nurse, she was very stubborn, and when she finally had gone to the hospital after having a variety of symptoms, it was almost too late.” (Paulen) TS 7:27 “There's really nothing more special to me than being able to develop relationships with my patients and support them throughout their journey. It's incredibly rewarding making such a difference in their lives and being able to witness the strength and resilience of patients battling cancer, and it's such an inspiration. Being able to provide my support both medically and empathetically is truly such an honor.” (Paulen) TS 10:04 “I also had a family member who was diagnosed with cancer. He was my uncle. And I witnessed firsthand the impact that compassionate and knowledgeable oncology nurses had on his treatment, and it really did leave such a lasting impact on me. … This experience deeply inspired me, and I just always wanted to be part of a team that offers hope and comfort to their patients and their families.” (Covino) TS 12:10 “I touched on my pediatric oncology clinical rotation, but I really do think it gave me insights into caring for younger cancer patients. This experience really emphasized the importance of a holistic approach to nursing, considering not just medical but also the emotional and developmental needs of children who are battling cancer.” (Covino) TS 24:05 “I also joined ONS as a student, so it was a large part of my college education and really gave me great access to resources, being able to attend meetings, and just stay updated on the latest in oncology nursing with the articles that they send out and just provided me with great networking opportunities with so many experienced oncology nurses who have such a wide breadth of knowledge.” (Covino) TS 24:27 “Practicing mindfulness and meditation has also been incredibly helpful in staying grounded and managing the emotional stress. These practices help me stay present. They reduce anxiety and maintain a positive outlook, even in these challenging environments. It's really important to just set emotional boundaries as well to avoid burnout.” (Covino) TS 33:05 “There's such a fulfillment that you get for making a significant impact on patients' lives, and that's what inspires me and should inspire others to consider this specialty. There's also a lot of growth opportunities, and I think it's really important to emphasize the growth opportunities within the field. And also just the advancements in cancer treatment can attract new nurses because there really is so much advancement in the field of cancer treatment.” (Paulen) TS 42:59 “I feel that specifically in this specialty, oncology nurses in particular are so much more willing to help versus they say that sometimes some nurses may eat their prey or whatever they might say. But I really think that oncology nurses are so willing to help, but sometimes you just have to really expose yourself and open up that door.” (Paulen) TS 45:07

Student nurses are devastated they are no longer guaranteed a job when they finish studying. The nurses union says Te Whatu Ora/Health has paused the mid-year intake into the new graduate programme, which provides student nurses with roles in the hospital system. Health New Zealand chief executive Margie Apa declined an interview this morning. A statement from Nadine Gray, the chief nurse at Te Whatu Ora, says, "there is no pause on the recruitment of graduate nurses by Health New Zealand. Any statements saying otherwise are incorrect." She says Te Whatu Ora is focussing on areas with vacancies, and that graduates can also find work in the private sector. A third year nursing student spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.

Edna Yilma is a nursing student at Quinnipiac University with a passion for health equity and holistic care. An immigrant-generation college student, she saw healthcare disparities and shortages impact her loved ones every day. She believed that coming to the U.S. would solve all these problems, and that in one of the richest countries in the world, the system would help all patients equally. However, she soon found that this was not the case. In 2011, her father had the first of what would be many strokes. She watched as her mother lost everything trying to manage his care and medical bills. Through her own life experiences and my continued nursing education, she has learned the importance of health equity. Last summer she had the opportunity to work with Johnson and Johnson's diversity, equity, and inclusion team to shape diversity trainings, assist with external equity research, and conduct data analysis on employee membership data. In that role, she networked and made long-lasting connections, truly seeing the value of mentorship. She then went on to work in project management with a focus on health disparity initiatives, where she offered insights to guide the development of the new J&J minority nursing student mentorship program and analyzed member data to shape future events. She hopes to share her experience and interest in health equity and to make a difference for others in this area. An upcoming Oncology Flynn Fellow, Edna is now working towards her dream of propelling the compassionate care she saw nurses provide when her father was ill. She believes that nurses are the heart of healthcare, and that their impact is critical in improving health outcomes. 1. Click the link to REGISTER for the Stress Solution Series2. According to one recent DHB study, nearly one-in-three nursing students quit their studies before qualifying, due to financial pressure, family responsibilities and other factors made worse by Covid-19. At the same time, health boards and rest homes are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to attract nurses from overseas to fill an estimated 4000 vacancies. As a third-year Otago Polytechnic nursing student, Jade Power has been following the difficult situation from ground zero. Power, who also chairs the national student unit of the Nurses Organisation, spoke to Corin Dann.

Join me this week on the latest episode of Frontline Static, as I had the opportunity to interview Megan. Megan is one of my clients who is currently a Nursing Student. She expresses that when we first met, her confidence had been rocked. Megan was also previously a collegiate volleyball player, who has always known what hard work looks like. She had set the goal of working in the CVICU as a Student Nurse, and expresses how that goal seemed impossible at first. She talks of how she had doubts, prepped, kept hitting obstacles, and then got offered the position in her dream CVICU as a Student Nurse, just 10 minutes after the interview. She talks of how life coaching has helped her grow into loving herself, has given her back her confidence, and how she is using what she has learned to now coach other healthcare workers in the realm of health and fitness. She speaks of not making your road blocks mean that you can't get there. The tag line on Jertaker's profile read, "I'm an American Musician, Entrepreneur, Content Creator, Wrestler and Student Nurse from Buffalo NY." That was intriguing right away and as I looked into him more I realized he was a Youtube content creator, who did crazy things on video (getting pepper sprayed, tasered, etc.), made his own music videos, and wrestled in an independent wrestling league. I like to think of my self as an open minded, non judgmental person, but even I quickly started to draw a conclusion about who "Jertaker" was. He must be one of these young people who thinks life is all about getting likes and attention. He is a product of the age we live in now, where it is all superficial social media stuff and no one ever really wants to grow up to take on real world responsibility. But that is why I do this show. I don't want to be that person that just assumes or judges people based on some preconception I have about life. I want to understand what, if anything, is actually underneath someone like Jertaker's approach to life. I want to get to have an in depth conversation to see what it's really all about. What I learned from this conversation and his value of "fully experiencing life" (which we realized mid way through was actually his value); is that this was not superficial at all for Jertaker. The approach he is taking, to try and fully embrace life, live it to the fullest, and experience as many different things as he can is very real and logical to him. He loves life and learning new things. He has realized that he loves music, and content creation, and marketing, and nursing, and wrestling, and on and on. The interesting thing about him though is that, unlike me and many others, he doesn't have a voice in his head that tells him "well that is too much, you need to settle down and pick something to focus on." That idea of limiting yourself makes no sense to him. Why would you not do all the things you enjoy? In many ways I very much get his philosophy on life and think it makes a lot of sense. Too many of us are too conditioned to believe that this life style is immature or aimless and we are "not allowed" to live that way, and maybe that is a mistake. To be fair though, there are some risks to it. We talked about personal relationships and how they suffer for Jertaker because he is optimizing for experiences and achievements, rather than deep connections with people. We also talked about the potential risks of always focusing on what makes you happy and that maybe it doesn't leave enough room for self reflection and questioning. Truth be told though, who knows, maybe Jertaker and others like him have figured something out. That if you approach life with extreme optimism and every experience is something new and exciting, you set yourself up for optimal happiness. I don't know, time will tell for Jertaker, but I do know that I have a much better perspective on who he is and how he thinks, thanks to this conversation.
