Two absurdly long titles make for some very entertaining films, as Jim and Patrick watch and discuss the Samurai/ronin/ninja classic Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance, and the Ennio Morricone-scored giallo with an all-star cast (including two and a half Bond girls!!!): Black Belly of the Tarantula.
In the nineteenth episode of Season 10: Dealer's Choice, Kyle is joined for a one-on-one conversation with screenwriter Gio Maldonado to discuss one of the most influential comic adaptations that weaves together its hyper-stylized violence, meditative character morality, and a bleak assessment of Japan through Edo feudal corruption in Kenji Misumi's first installment of the Lone Wolf and Cub film series, The Sword of Vengeance (1972).

Jason & Ryan stash their baby carts long enough to review the samurai cult classic Lone Wolf & Cub: Sword of Vengeance.
Two episodes in a week?! What a treat. Brad Garoon & Jake Ziegler are back with a look at the films of 1973. The two movies discussed come from different countries and represent popular film movements coming out of each. Jake assigns Brad Hal Ashby's The Last Detail, a road movie starring Jack Nicholson, Otis Young, and a very young Randy Quaid. They talk about subcultures of the time, and the style that many New Hollywood-era films were interested in. And by the way, when Brad says God of Carnage in this conversation, he means Carnal Knowledge. Brad then throws it to Jake to watch Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart to Hades. They talk about this bloody, exploitative martial arts film and the deluge of similar films that came out of Japan around this time. They talk about its influence on modern franchises like Star Wars, and the clear (and admitted) influence it had on Quentin Tarantino. Other movies discussed in this episode: The Tale of Zatoichi (1962), Blood Feast (1963), Easy Rider (1969), Carnal Knowledge (1971), Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance (1972), Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart on the River Styx (1972), Lady Snowblood (1973), Fantastic Planet (1973), Robin Hood (1973), The Last of Sheila (1973), Live and Let Die (1973), Magnum Force (1973), The Exorcist (1973), Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart in the Land of Demons (1973), American Graffiti (1973), The Sting (1973), Mean Streets (1973), Badlands (1973), Paper Moon (1973), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003), Last Flag Flying (2017).
You may not know it but movies and television like Kill Bill, 13 Assassins, and The Professional, The Mandalorian and The Last of Us all owe Lone Wolf and Cub a great debt of gratitude even if Charlie and Nate wrongly dislike it. Thankfully the cultured stylings of Troy and Pete were able to team up with the Reviewing History Podcast's Brian Ruppert to set them straight. We talk about the Edo Period of Japanese history and examine the classic samurai tale and it's relationships to modern cinema. Oh and did I mention the glorious blood fountains cause we got those too. So many blood fountains.

Twenty years ago, Robert Kirkman unleashed Invincible upon the planet. The comic represented an opportunity to do everything he ever imagined a superhero comic was capable of doing. Through Image Comics (and what would eventually develop into his own Skybound Entertainment), the comic creator found a narrative freedom that previously proved impossible at the big two comic companies. In the process, he also created an utterly compelling romance that took significant time to develop, causing profound melodramatic tension in his audience. We're positively giddy to welcome Robert Kirkman onto the show this week. For years, we've wanted to cover Mark Grayson and Atom Eve's relationship. Invincible is such a massive story, and we needed to figure out where to begin and how to cram it all into four Counseling Session episodes. Thankfully, Kirkman knew exactly how we could pull it off and was happy to help us through our programming. Before we meet up with Kirkman, however, we run down our recent Seattle trip and review the magnificent Emerald City Comic Con. As first-time attendees, we were overwhelmed with everything the convention offered, from in-depth panels to an endless array of comic artists. All cons have their own vibe, and ECCC was no exception. You may want to add this show to your yearly schedule. Access to Lola pancakes might be reason enough. Our Seattle review concludes at the 18:19 minute mark. You can skip it if all you're here for is the Robert Kirkman talk, but then you'd miss out on Lisa's hairdo debacle, which would be a terrible shame. Our chat with Robert Kirkman does drift into a little Fire Power celebration. We couldn't help ourselves, especially when we considered how that comic's central romance sorta operates as a spiritual sequel to the one shared between Mark and Eve. We don't go into any major spoilers. So, if all you've seen is the Invincible television series, this episode is a safe space. Make sure that you follow Robert Kirkman on his Twitter and through the Skybound Entertainment website. Invincible recently published an anniversary facsimile edition, a stripped-down black and white number one, and a new deluxe edition compendium. Seek those out at your local comic shop. Few comics operate like Do A Powerbomb! Cartoonist Daniel Warren Johnson does his thing (along with genius colorist Mike Spicer), pulling you in with the most incredible, kinetic, and badass panels while slowly engaging your heart and soul. When the comic reaches its jaw-dropping climax, you're shook and probably requiring a little alone time to get all those uncontrollable tears out of your system. Since the very first issue, we've been championing Do A Powerbomb! We've folded the comic into our all-time favorites, reaching into it and finding ourselves over and over again with every re-read. Daniel Warren Johnson always delivers a wallop with his comics, and yet, we're still surprised when he lands a new blow. In this episode, we drag DWJ into our ring. The conversation is full-spoilers. So, please, read Do A Powerbomb! in its entirety before venturing any further. We would feel absolutely awful if your experience was spoiled in any way by this discussion. Having once read the comic, we believe our chat with Daniel Warren Johnson will elevate your appreciation for the book. We dig into every aspect of the comic, and Dan is extremely generous with his time and consideration. We examine Do A Powerbomb!'s unique origins, tied to Johnson's late-in-life discovery of professional wrestling. We talk about how it initially seeped into his Beta Ray Bill mini-series for Marvel Comics and why he was compelled to smash it into this particular familial saga. And, yeah, we go deep into the comic's absolutely bonkers climax and just how the hell he came up with that epic final confrontation. Oh, and we get some cool future book-related news out of Dan as well. Stay tuned for that. Be sure to follow Daniel Warren Johnson on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. Closely adapted from the classic manga series, Lone Wolf And Cub: Sword of Vengeance is the first of a film series that ran for six installments between 1972 and 1974. It stars Tomisaburo Wakayama as Ogami Itto, a disgraced former executioner to the shogun. He is forced to travel the Japanese countryside with his young son in a heavily-armed baby carriage. Together, the two take on dirty jobs in the hopes of one day exacting vengeance against the wicked clan who framed Itto for the crimes that caused his fall from grace. Ryan is joined by Rachel for this deconstruction of this foundational chambara film. Discussion points include the film's episodic narrative structure, the movie's juxtaposition of quiet moments with blood-gushing violence, the repressed soulfulness hiding behind Itto's stoicism, and Lone Wolf And Cub's influence upon products like Usagi Yojimbo, Sin City, Road To Perdition, and The Mandalorian. Ryan and Rachel also have a discussion about this movie's frank (and arguably cavalier) approach to its depictions of sexual assault. So, if that isn't something you feel comfortable listening to, maybe skip this episode. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ryan-valentine3/support
