Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. **Tai-Ex opening ** The Tai-Ex opened up 5-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 14,617 on turnover of 2-billion N-T. The market came under heavy pressure on Monday as investor sentiment continued to be overshadowed by (使(某事物)令人不快或減少樂趣) concerns about the U-S Federal Reserve's rate hike cycle ahead of a two-day policymaking meeting. And turnover for the session stood at 151-billion N-T -- which is the lowest level so far this year. **China's Beer and Liquor Imports Ban to Cost Taiwan Less than NT$1 billion ** Finance Minister Su Jien-rong says China's suspension of the imports of some shipments of beer and liquor from Taiwan is not expected to cost exporters more than 1-billion N-T. The ban on beer and liquor has affected several of Taiwan's leading suppliers (供應商) including the Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corporation, King Car Food Industrial and Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor. China has said the shipment ban is related to a new customs registration system which to effect on January 1 of this year. Economics Minister Wang Mei-hua says although many countries have been critical of the new Chinese customs registration system, Beijing has been targeting Taiwanese exporters before those of other countries. **Kaohsiung Mayor Meets with Tokyo Governor in Japan ** And, Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai has met with Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike in Japan Chen is leading a delegation of city officials from the Department of Administrative and International Affairs and Marine Bureau and arrived in Japan on Sunday for a three-day visit. According to the Kaohsiung City Government, Chen and Koike exchanged views on the coronavirus pandemic and other issues of mutual interest, including smart cities, energy saving and carbon reduction. It is Chen's first overseas trip since taking office in 2020. **FTX Founder Arrested in Bahamas ** Police in the Bahamas have arrested Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of the bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX. The arrest came at the request of (按照…的要求) US authorities. US Correspondent Ira Spitzer reports. **Intl Tribunal Asked by Island States for Opinion on Climate Change ** The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea says that small island states have asked it to provide an opinion on what impact a key U.N. treaty governing maritime activities has on efforts to curb climate change. The Hamburg-based U.N. tribunal says it received a request from Antigua and Barbuda and Tuvalu to render an advisory opinion on the climate obligations (義務) arising to parties from the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea. The tribunal said it has added the request to its list of cases. It isn't clear whether or when an advisory opinion could eventually be issued. But if the tribunal does provide the treaty's 168 parties with legal guidance on the issue of climate change it could trigger further cases. **Mexico US Officials to Discuss Trade Issues ** Mexico's foreign secretary says he'll travel this week to Washington, D.C., in an effort to resolve a dispute over imports of genetically modified U.S. corn. The trip planned for Friday comes before a scheduled visit next month to Mexico City by U.S. President Joe Biden. Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard says he and other Mexican officials will be seeking (尋求、試圖) points of agreement with Washington on the corn, and on other issues. Mexico plans to ban imports of genetically modified corn for human consumption and perhaps eventually for animal feed. Biden and the leaders of Mexico and Canada are to meet Jan. 9 in Mexico City. Kiyomi Koike is a Japanese immigrant and she became a proud US citizen more than a decade ago. She is the founder and owner of SEI MEE TEA, which offers quality organic Japanese green teas nationwide and internationally since 2004. When her second child was born, her husband was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer while her father was in critical condition with lung cancer in Japan. Her father passed away six months after she was informed about his illness. Desperate to help her husband, Kiyomi researched intensively to find a better way of getting the health benefits of green tea. Five years later, Kiyomi's husband was cleared of cancer. Although skeptical at first, the oncologist told them, “I think you're on to something here. Whatever you do, don't stop drinking your green tea.” Kiyomi and her husband knew it was their duty to share this good news with others who were battling cancer and other terrible diseases. Kiyomi's mission is to share her discoveries with American folks by offering the purest and simplest form of "Ground Green Tea". When asked "why Green Tea," she answers, "Because Green Tea is the simplest and easiest addition anyone can make to his or her diet in order to improve health." She believes a small habitual change could lead to a significant outcome in a long run. Green tea naturally contains caffeine. Kiyomi found the patented water-process decaf method removes caffeine but not antioxidants. She has contracted independently with an organic tea farm in Japan and offers water-process decaf green tea powder, using organic green tea leaves. Kiyomi loves to hear from her happy customers more than anything else. Here's one of the wonderful messages she received recently: "Thank you so very much! Not only am I extremely thrilled to have won your survey giveaway, but I also received, from you, more information on a brewing question that I have had for years! I now feel that I am more educated, and informed, on everything about green tea because of the educational series that you recently provided in the “Learn True Fact” series. It is so clear that the company really cares for its customer base, and truly believes in the integrity and quality of its product, and it comes through in everything that you do - right down to your packaging and shipping. Your passion for how and why you started SEI MEE TEA comes through in every way and is aspiring!" As Kiyomi is passionate about healthy foods that are easy to make and delicious, she also offers another tasty & healthy beverage to the American market: "Unforgettable" coffee alternative made with roasted brown rice, which is caffeine-free and gluten-free. Since Chef AJ included this unique product in her favorites, it became a staple for many American folks as well. Here's what one of the reviews says: "I used to drink a lot of coffee. Had to give up caffeine. However, my wife saw Chef AJ recommend this product, so she ordered it. It is true. Made according to instructions, the drink is like the best cup of coffee I can get at Starbucks." Find more testimonials at https://groundgreentea.com/testimonials-customer-stories/

Theoretical limits on the speed of learning inverse models explain the rate of adaptation in arm reaching tasks

Abstract: An essential aspect of human motor learning is the formation of inverse models, which map desired actions to motor commands. Inverse models can be learned by adjusting parameters in neural circuits to minimize errors in the performance of motor tasks through gradient descent. However, the theory of gradient descent establishes an upper limit on the learning speed, above which learning becomes unstable. Specifically, the eigenvalues of the Hessian of the error surface around a minimum determine the maximum speed of learning in a given task. Here, we use this theoretical framework to analyze the speed of learning in different inverse model learning architectures in a set of isometric arm-reaching tasks. We show theoretically that, for these isometric tasks, the error surface and, thus the speed of learning, are determined by the shapes of 1) the force manipulability ellipsoid of the arm and 2) the distribution of targets in the task. In particular, rounder manipulability ellipsoids generate a rounder error surface, allowing for faster learning of the inverse model. Rounder target distributions have a similar effect. We tested these predictions experimentally in a virtual quasi-isometric reaching task with a visuomotor transformation. The experimental results were consistent with our theoretical predictions. Furthermore, our analysis accounts for the speed of learning in previous experiments with incompatible and compatible virtual surgery tasks, and in visuomotor rotation tasks with different numbers of targets. By identifying aspects of a task that influence the speed of learning, our results provide theoretical principles for the design of motor tasks that allow for faster learning. A model predictive control strategy to regulate movements and interactions

Abstract: Humans are adept at moving the arm to interact with objects and surfaces. The brain is thought to regulate motion and interactions using two different controllers, one specialized for movements and the other for force regulation. However, it remains unclear whether different control mechanisms are necessary. Here we show that the brain can employ a single high-level control strategy for both movement and interaction control. The Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategy introduced in this paper uses an internal model of the environment to plan the arm's muscle activity whilst updating its predictions using periodic feedback. Computer simulations demonstrate MPC's ability to produce human-like movements and after-effects in free and force field environments. It can simultaneously regulate both force and stiffness during interactions, and can accomplish motor tasks demanding transitions between motion and interaction control. Model Predictive Control promises to be an important tool to test ideas of motor control as it can handle nonlinear dynamics with changing environments and goals without having to specify the movement duration. Transcript of The First Kato, a short biography of Raymond Tokutaro Muramoto: [Play Flight of the Bumblebee from 1m27s of The Green Hornet radio episode “Citizenship Insurance Racket,” broadcast 5 May 1938.] January 31st, 1936. When the first episode of The Green Hornet aired on WXYZ radio in Detroit, the voice of Kato was Tokutaro Hayashi1. [Clip of Reid talking, followed by Kato. Citizenship Insurance Racket 13m40-14m.]The station's Dramatic Director James Jewell “renamed him Toyo.” That's according to Wyxie Wonderland: An Unauthorized 50-Year Diary of WXYZ Detroit by Dick Osgood. In ads and newspaper articles, the actor was billed as Raymond Hayashi or Raymond Toyo. Six years later, he was credited as Raymond Muramoto in this item:“Kato of the fascinating radio program, ‘Green Hornet' of Station WXYZ is here in person among us colonists. He is none other than Raymond Muramoto, a Seattlelite, formerly of Detroit, Michigan. Mr. Muramoto who portrayed Kato was brought to the limelight by Mr. James Jewel, director of the program, while managing the Parkstons Hotel. After numerous radio tests, he was selected by Mr. George Trendle, president of the station. Mr. Muramoto was the only Japanese besides Hize co-EE-kay (Koike), opera singer, who was under contract to N.B.C. for six years. He also served as assistant sound technician on The Lone Ranger program for the past four years.” That's from the May 30th, 1945 edition of Information Bulletin, published by prisoners in the Tulelake, California concentration camp where he was held during World War Two.The “Coming Marriages” column in Billboard magazine on July 29th, 1939, began with “Raymond Toyo, actor on station WXYZ, Detroit, who plays Kato in The Green Hornet, and Tsuruko Kuranishi, … of Auburn, Washington.” They were married on August 3rd in Seattle. The 1940 census lists a Ramon Hayashi, born in Japan in 1902, living on Prentiss Avenue, Detroit, Michigan. Others in Household: Tsuru Hayoshi, 27 years old, Female. What nationality was the character Kato? Why did it change over the years? My guess is that the rich, white men who created and adapted The Green Hornet didn't invest as much thought in it as later fans might have. They didn't make the hero's servant Japanese out of concern that representation matters. They were filling in blanks on a formula. WXYZ had succeeded with The Lone Ranger, a masked crime fighter in the Wild West. When they were brainstorming a name for his Native American sidekick, one of the brainstormers looked at a map of Arizona and saw the Tonto Basin1. When the same execs decided to write a modern story about a rich playboy who fought crime in a mask, they wanted a Tonto for him. According to Dick Osgood in Wyxie Wonderland, they settled on a Japanese servant as The Green Hornet's sidekick. Dramatic director James Jewell wanted a Japanese actor and ignored suggestions that they use a Chinese actor instead. Narration in the first two episodes called Kato “oriental.” In the third episode and for a few years of the series, he was introduced as [clip of narrator saying “Kato, his faithful Japanese valet” from Citizenship Insurance Racket, 2m39s-2m41s].2 The show started describing him as “Oriental” again in January 1938, presumably because Japan had begun attacking China and the US was on the side of China. A broadcast on June 21st, 1941, several months before Pearl Harbor, labeled Kato Filipino. His nationality wasn't mentioned again until January tenth, 1942: [Narrator from The Green Hornet episode “Poor Substitutes for a Prison, 40s-47s. “With his faithful Filipino valet Kato, Britt Reid, daring young publisher, matches wits with racketeers and saboteurs…”]2The timing may have led to the rumor that his Japanese nationality was dropped immediately after Pearl Harbor. In the 1940 and 1941 film serials, Kato was played by Keye Luke and described as Korean. Bruce Lee starred as Kato in The Green Hornet TV show from 1966-1967, where he was described as Chinese. And in the 2011 feature film, they joke about it, maybe using Britt Reid's ignorance as a stand-in for the historical confusion over Kato's nationality. Jay Chou as Kato says he was born in Shanghai. Reid says, “Yeah, I love Japan.”3 What else do we know about Tokutaro Hayashi, or Raymond Toyo, or Tokutaro Raymond Muramoto? He arrived in the US in 19204. He ran a restaurant when he was recruited by the Jam Handy Organization to act in commercial films. But he didn't switch careers completely. He continued to manage the restaurant. He was good at playing pool. While at WXYZ, he beat the best player in the studio and taught some of his coworkers how to play1.From Wyxie Wonderland1, quote:“Raymond had first worked in Detroit for a prominent automotive executive who had given him the financial backing for his Japanese restaurant. By the time he was sent to Jewell he was prosperous. He was having so much fun  playing Kato on the radio that he forgot to collect his paychecks. They did not amount to much, of course, but they did pile up. Finally Jewell …. forced him to take the checks.“Then, without warning, he just didn't show up. Inquiries at his restaurant revealed that he had gone to Seattle to greet some girls from Japan. One he married; the others he brought back with him to be waitresses in his restaurant.“Another actor managed to fake Kato until Raymond's return. Jewell explained firmly to the … man that actors had a responsibility to be present when required. To make amends, Raymond invited the entire cast to his restaurant and served them a Japanese dinner of many courses–with sake.” End quote. He convinced Al Hodge (the voice actor behind Britt Reid) to have his wife Tsuruko work unpaid as a maid in Hodge's two-room apartment until she could find another job. Tokutaro asked another WXYZ staffer to join him in buying a car wash. They didn't go through with it1.At some point after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Tokutaro was informed the government would send him to Japan. He asked his colleague Dick Osgood to intervene. An occasional voice actor and quiz master, Osgood had been broadcasting a series tied in with the war effort called March to Victory. Scripts for the show were supposedly vetted by six departments in Washington. Tokutaro might have thought Osgood had some influence but he couldn't help. In his book, Osgood says Tokutaro “disappeared, presumably to a concentration camp in the west. No one at WXYZ ever saw Raymond again.”1Raymond Tokutaro Muramoto is the name on a draft card registered February 15th, 1942. Place of birth is given as Kanazawa, Japan, February 11, 1900. His residence is listed as Seattle, Washington. Muramoto's father-in-law, Masaichi Kuranishi is listed as next of kin5. Muramoto arrived at the Tule Lake “War Relocation Center” in California on May 27, 19426. He was involved in theater there and put in charge of a Radio Drama Division at the camp. They presented a mock radio broadcast “to give persons practical experience in the radio field as artists, announcers, commentators and sound effects technicians.”7Muramoto left the concentration camp on October first, 19456.Information about his life after that is sparse. Raymond Muramoto lived in Seattle according to city directories from 1951, 1953 and 1982. Airplane passenger manifests show a Raymond Muramoto flying from Honolulu to LA in 1957, and from Tokyo to Seattle in 19588.A petition for naturalization, October 12, 1955 gives a snapshot of his life at that time. “My full, true and correct name is – Raymond Tokutaro Muramoto. My occupation is – truck driver. … The name of my wife is Tsuruko Muramoto. … One child, Florence Reiko, female, born October 8, 1937.” His petition was approved9.The main writer of The Lone Ranger, Fran Striker, appeared on the tv game show “To Tell the Truth” in 1960. If Muramoto had appeared on the show, we might know more about his life. Or at least his real name. After scouring databases of newspaper articles, census records, airplane passenger manifests, marriage records, and other information, the puzzle is still incomplete. The surname “Toyo” was assigned to him by James Jewell out of QUOTE convenience UNQUOTE1. When he arrived in the US at age twenty, he probably picked the common American name “Raymond.” Most official documents call him Tokutaro Muramoto. It's only the 1940 census and the promotional materials and articles about his radio work that list his last name as “Hayashi.” If his life were an episode of The Green Hornet, Britt Reid might speculate he had changed names in order to hide from the law or gangsters. Maybe he just picked Hayashi as a stage name before the radio station gave him another name.Raymond T. Muramoto died July 26, 1988 in King County, Washington, at the age of 8810.[Pause]You've been listening to “The First Kato,” a short biography of Raymond Tokutaro Muramoto, by Robert Thomas Northrup. For this week's Six Degrees of Kill Bill episode, we head back to Japan to discuss another film inspired by the work of LADY SNOWBLOOD writer Kazuo Koike. Koike's magnum opus is a Lone Wolf & Cub, an epic series that ran for six years and nearly 9,000 pages. Its popularity led to a series of six films, produced in Japan from 1972-1974. While the LONE WOLF & CUB films were released in the U.S. in their original Japanese language, English subtitled form, they didn't truly gain popularity in America until 1980, when a pair of film producers bought the rights, smashed together footage from the first two LONE WOLF & CUB films, added a new synth-heavy soundtrack and an English dub, and released it to the grindhouse circuit in 1980. The result, SHOGUN ASSASSIN, was a success and led many cinephiles back to the original films. In this episode, we'll discuss the history of SHOGUN ASSASSIN, from its origins as a manga all the way through the production of the LONE WOLF & CUB films, and its release and its legacy, including its use in Quentin Tarantino's KILL BILL. She will teach you how to adapt to the pressures of the gaijin lifestyle through wabi sabi thinking style. This guru’s YouTube series offers lessons from a female entrepreneur on how to be a female entrepreneur who’s only source of income is selling how to be a female entrepreneur. The whole gang has spent their week getting motivational speeches from a chronically demotivated woman. We have learned work ethics and self-management techniques, such as ‘taking the day off for migraines’ and ‘filming yourself doing chores for YouTube clicks’.Kelly additionally teaches Japanese cultural practices, such as selecting Ginza as an Instagram filter. She teaches the fundamentals of Japanese thinking such as gambatte, shouganai, mottainai, chikan and all the other shit you learn from your first week living here packaged as self-help.Tokyo Drew may have shown us Western bubble Japan, but Kelly shows us THE REAL JAPAN (confined to her apartment and Disneyland). We wish Kelly all the best in obtaining her goal of getting Corona virus for more YouTube ad revenue. Also on the show:We get Japan Circle Jerked and mostly positive vibes, but some people have attacked Jay’s flawless Kansai-ben. Biri arimusker?Speaking of being jerked, Koike finally gets to Nik and uses him as a mouth piece to sell the conspiracy theory that Corona is spread via pink-salons. Seems like Koike and her “夜の町” talking points are being funneled to the foreign community by Nik, or should I say NHiK?

J., Taccheri, G., Demars, M., Im, S., Caro, K., Lopez, S., Bateh, J., Hof, P. R., Clem, R. L., Morishita, H. Abstract: Frontal top-down cortical neurons projecting to sensory cortical regions are well-positioned to integrate long-range inputs with local circuitry in frontal cortex to implement top-down attentional control of sensory regions. How adolescence contributes to the maturation of top-down neurons and associated local/long-range input balance, and the establishment of attentional control is poorly understood. Here we combine projection-specific electrophysiological and rabies-mediated input mapping in mice to uncover adolescence as a developmental stage when frontal top-down neurons projecting from the anterior cingulate to visual cortex are highly functionally integrated into local excitatory circuitry and have heightened activity compared to adulthood. Chemogenetic suppression of top-down neuron activity selectively during adolescence, but not later periods, produces long-lasting visual attentional behavior deficits, and results in excessive loss of local excitatory inputs in adulthood. Our study reveals an adolescent sensitive period when top-down neurons integrate local circuits with long-range connectivity to produce attentional behavior. Copy rights belong to original authors.

Why now? -Two weeks ago, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that Group of Seven leaders had agreed to support a “complete” Olympics. And the government remained silence for coming week while the COVID-19 cases gradually increased nation widely. He did not respond to the questions on the postponement. Reuters reported that he dodged questions about whether any of the leaders had brought up the possibility of postponement. That is true to say the postponement is good for the health of the athletes due to the Coronavirus outbreak on the global scale. Both Tokyo and Japanese Olympic Committee established a point when the city was chosen for it. That is “Athlete first. “ As I kept saying the olympic should be held next year for all good to athletes since the outbreak of the virus. This late decision of the postponement was resulted from the hypocrisy of the committees. Obviously, there are many ugly fights behind the committees. For example, Tokyo's chief governor Koike showed dissatisfaction towards the International Olympic Committee(IOC) when IOC decided to relocate the marathon's sport ground to Hokkaido from Tokyo due to the severe heat in the summer of Tokyo. People already got tickets for the preview disappointed and the huge money was mended from fundings. During this political show, COVID-19 increased the number of cases nearly a half million in the world. WHO called the spreads as pandemic and people took this virus as a threat to the human being. I didn't see what's the point of the Olympic at that stage. One of a survey showed the result that majority of Japanese people agreed to postpone or cancel the olympic. Even before the official announcement from the Japanese government, we, from the western point of view, knew it's not gonna happen this year. It was obvious. However, the PM Abe used the uncertain word “complete” Olympics neither saying cancel nor postpone. I can clearly see the problem of its language which carries out many misinformation by its-self. At the age of the digital disruption such as fake news, can Japanese people get informed properly? The key is the traditional media's role, I suppose. Fortunately, we haven't see the vital decrease of traditional media outlets such as newspaper unlike the western medias. But, it will happen. The former chief of the Buzzfeed Japan, Daisuke Furuta pointed out the declining of the revenue in Newspaper industries in Japan, Huffpost reported. “The revenue from Newspaper is clearly dropping.” said, Daisuke. Last weekend, both the Japanese PM Shinzo Abe and the Chief of Tokyo, Eiko Koike announced the voluntary restrain ”JISHUKU” last weekend while Tokyo recorded the highest number of the cases following Tuesday. This government's action is squeezing the neck of entertainment industries. One of my friend told me his web magazine lost more than half of its revenue due to the cancellation of events. Following the principal, further restriction cause deeper the damage in economy. The government's responsibility on supporting businesses was not stated by the politicians, journalists and Japanese people. Those exploited people are the consequence of the ignorance.

THE Leadership Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

Japan Still Scared Of It's Own Shadow   The world's third largest economy and one of the most sophisticated and advanced countries is a notorious underperformer on the international stage. I was reminded of this by Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike. She was a guest speaker at a foreign Chamber event drawing a capacity crowd. She is whip smart, charismatic and knows how to charm the crowd. She speaks Arabic fluently and her English is simply excellent. Yet, she chose to address the assembled Chamber members in Japanese not in English. What an opportunity missed to show Tokyo and Japan's internationalism.   Having been a diplomat, I know how these events are totally scripted beforehand, so nothing can possibly go wrong. The event featured a series of questions from the Director of the Chamber to Koike. These questions were all vetted prior to the event, so Koike had complete knowledge of what she was going to be asked. They were all softball questions anyway, which made them easy to handle. The foreign Chamber is never going to get aggressive with the Governor of Tokyo, so Koike was amongst firm friends.   Yet she switched to Japanese after making some flawless off the cuff comments in English at the beginning. This included cracking a joke about channel three of the headsets were receiving the translation in Arabic. That was witty and said to everyone she was a very confident person in dealing with foreign languages. At the end she switched back to perfect English again, more witticisms followed and then she elegantly glided out the door. Why didn't she do the whole piece in English? She obviously had the ability.   Yes, it was on the record and there were members of the Japanese media there recording her comments, so by speaking in Japanese, she could play to the broader populace of Tokyo. “Here is our Governor effortlessly dealing with foreigners”, type of thing. You may have noticed that the the Governor of Tokyo does not want for media attention.   Here was an opportunity to work on the non-Japanese media. To work on the Japan fans and boosters in the room. Projecting Tokyo as a truly international city was always a stretch under her long reigning predecessor Shintaro Ishihara, because he was so parochial in his views. Koike is a breath of fresh air in that regard and could have played an effective role of evangelist for Tokyo, speaking directly to the foreign community. She distributed some very high quality books on Tokyo to the audience, which were first rate exemplars of the sophistication of the capital.   She could have worked the room and converted everyone to fandom, but she chose to retreat into Japanese. She could have chosen to make her main remarks in English and then answer the questions at the end in Japanese or rely on the simultaneous translators. I know from my own public speaking experience in Japanese, that the questions at the end can be difficult to follow at times. However, she had simple options to get around that issue, which she chose not to exercise. Why?   We see again and again Japan scared to step out. Soft power should be a tremendous advantage for Japan, but it consistently decides not to take it up. Koike's luncheon event is another example. The conservative bureaucrats in the Governor's office were no doubt laser focused on eliminating all risk. Speaking in English is risky, so let's not do that. What about the upside? I guess that this was a non-contest between balancing some degree of risk and achieving a very much more positive result.   As we know in Japan, mistakes are not allowed and the best way to avoid a mistake is to do nothing different or new.   Isn't it time we started to work on this construct? In our companies we need to embrace change, to allow failure as a learning process, to have our BHAGs (Big Hairy Audacious Goals) which take us out of our Comfort Zone. Leaders like Koike would be fantastic role models for the country, if they chose to play that role. They choose not too and so Japanese continues to fly under the radar. When will Japan be ready to become a player on the world stage in international business or global relations? Don't hold your breath in anticipation of anything changing soon, when the best and the brightest decline the challenge.   Engaged employees are self-motivated. The self-motivated are inspired. In the Kojiki version of the myth, a hare tricks some wanizame into being used as a land bridge in order to travel from the Island of Oki to Cape Keta.  Cape Keta is now identified with the Hakuto Coast in the present-day city of Tottori.  The hare challenges the sharks to see whose clan is larger—that of the sharks, or that of the hares.  The hare had the sharks lie in a row across the sea. The hare then hopped across them, counting them as he went. Nearing the end, the hare exclaims that he has deceived the sharks in order to use them as a bridge. The last shark attacks the hare, ripping his fur from him.  Ōkuninushi and his eighty brothers were traveling through the Inaba region to woo Princess Yakami of Inaba.  While the brothers were on their way to visit the princess, the flayed hare stopped them and asked them for help. Rather than helping the hare, they advised it to wash in the sea and dry itself in the wind, which naturally caused it great pain.  In contrast Ōkuninushi, unlike his quarreling elder brothers, told the hare to bathe in fresh water from the mouth of a river, and then roll in the pollen of cattails.  The body of the hare was restored to its original state, and after its recovery, revealed its true form as a god.  In gratitude, the hare told Ōkuninushi, the lowest born in the family, that he would marry Princess Yakami.  Hare of Inaba legend emphasizes the benevolence of Ōkuninushi, who was later enshrined at the Izumo-taisha.   Japanese scholars have traditionally interpreted the struggle between the kind Ōkuninushi and his wrathful eighty brothers as a symbolic representation of civilization and barbarism in the emergent Japanese state.  The version of the Hare of Inaba legend told in the Kojiki has been compared to similar myths from Java in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and India. Ise ga Naru version Long ago, when Japanese goddess Amaterasu and her entourage traveled around at the boundary of Yakami in Inaba, they were looking for a place for their temporary palace, suddenly a white hare appeared. The white hare bit Amaterasu's clothes and took her to an appropriate place for a temporary palace along Nakayama mountain and Reiseki mountain. About two hours' walk, accompanied by the white hare, Amaterasu reached a mountain top plain, which is now called Ise ga naru. Then, the white hare disappeared at Ise ga naru. The place of this legend is in Yazu town and Tottori city, in Tottori Prefecture (ancient Inaba and Houki), where the shrine Hakuto Jinja reveres the white hare. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hare_of_Inaba Rabbits, so cute and gentle, so furry, soft and warm are one of the animals which the Japanese are most familiar with.  Not only are they popular pets ( there was a veritable house-rabbit craze in the Meiji Period), but most schools and kindergartens keep them ( in a pen outdoors), to teach kids about resposibility and caring for living creatures. It is because of this connection with fertility and abundant offspring that the ancient Asians (Indians, Chinese, Japanese, etc) have long said that there is a rabbit (hare) on the moon ( in Japan it is actually pounding mochi rice cakes).  It seems perfectly logical to me since I have to know that THE MOON has also been considered to be deeply connected to pregnancy and childbirth. Thus, the MOON, a God of Conception and Childbirth, with a servant, the symbol of fertility- the HARE – are a natural combination. Since rabbits were associated with having children, there were various folk beliefs which existed throughout Japan linking rabbits with prayers for easy delivery.  Eating rabbit meat to ensure the mother and child`s safety was customary in certain parts of Japan, while in others ( interestingly) it was shunned- in the belief that doing so would lead to the chlid being born with a hare-lip ( mitsu-guchi, 三っ口). And though the practice of eating rabbit meat before delivery (or the belief that it should be avoided) have completely died out, there are still a few shrines around Japan which are dedicated to rabbits as  messengers of the God(s), that are popular places to pray for conception and then easy delivery. Another reason that hares have been have been worshipped at certain shrines, or in some places are believed to have the power of prophecy ( for example, predicting the weather) is because of a very famous story in Japan`s oldest text, the KOJIKI. Another interesting Hare related myth which has led to the animal`s deification.  At Uji Shrine  there is a story of the Emperor Nintoku`s son, while once fleeing  for his life, was guided to safety by a hare (what probably really happened is that he  followed the trails in the bush made by rabbits or other small animals). That is why a Hare-Deity is believed to protect the shrine.  Some even say that the place name UJI derives from Usagi- miCHI- Rabbit-Road!. On the volcanic island of Sakurajima (桜島) in Kagoshima Prefecture, there also seems to have been a belief in a rabbit/hare deity which was called O-Mimi-Naga-Sama (お耳長様)- Lord long-Ears! An Edo Period text contains thid story:  On Sakurajima Island there lived a large hare which was believed, by the local residents, to be the deity of the mountain ( the island is a volcano).  Because of that, no one there ever ate hare meat. In fact, even mentioning the word hare ( USAGI), was believed to bring on a stomachache. Thus, in conversation everyone would refer to this animal as Lord Long Ears ( O-Mimi-Naga-Sama). Once a member of the Satsuma Clan ( the rulers of that region) came to island for a hunting expedition, and killed an big, old hare. The Volcano erupted. Hunting was subsequently banned. http://blog.alientimes.org/2011/01/for-the-year-of-the-rabbit-some-musings-on-rabbits-and-hares-in-japanese-culture-and-history/ A place related to the legend of the white rabbit of Inaba, one of the most well-known myths in Japan. https://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/spot/natuscen/hakuto-beach.html Hakuto Coast is a beautiful beach of white sand. It is included as one of the 100 Selected Beaches in Japan, and is a popular spot for sea bathing in summer and surfing in winter. You can see the pretty pink Japanese rose flowers, for which this place is the southern limit for growing naturally.  It is a very famous place in Japan as the setting of the myth of the white rabbit of Inaba. Now it seems the Japanese love the rabbit, and have many Rabbit Shrines Nearby the coast, is Hakuto Shrine, enshrining the legendary white rabbit as well as, and Mitarashi-ike, a pond in which the white rabbit apparently washed its body.  There is a mysterious legend about Mitarashi-ike, which states that the water level remains the same in any kind of weather.  As a result, it is also known as “Fuzou Fugen No Ike” (a pond with unchanged water level).  There is an island offshore from which the white rabbit returned, so you can imagine what it was like in the mythological age.  It is also a place with a beautiful sunset view.  Supposidly you will have a romantic time if you visit this place with your partner. The oldest shrine of Japan https://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/spot/shritemp/o-miwa-shrine.html based on the old Shinto that worships mountains Omiwa Jinja in Yamato, current Sakurai City, of Nara is said to be the oldest shrine of Japan that date back to the age before emperors. The shrine is dedicated to Omononushi-no-mikoto who appears in myths.  Because his soul was comforted in Mt. Miwa just behind the shrine, the entire mountain is the subject of worship. Omononushi-no-mikoto is the god known for saving the white rabbit of Inaba, so “Nadeusagi (rabbit to stroke)” is placed at the entrance of the gathering hall.  It is said that stroking the rabbit will take away your pain.  Stroked by so many people the rabbit is now mirror-shiny. The "Rabbit Shrine" The Higashitenno-Okazaki Shrine in Kyoto, not far from the much larger famous Heian Shrine. This smaller shrine is usullay empty and you m ay be abe to roam around in solitude and appreciate the Kawaii (cute in Japanese) rabbit statues. Only in Japan could there be an entire shrine built with rabbit statues and miniature rabbit figurines lined up perfectly straight trusting that no one will remove them.  This is an “off the beaten track” shrine, and is worth checking out. Okazaki Shrine has served as a shrine for safe birth since 1178, and the Ujiko-sai festival is held every October in celebration.  The rabbit is considered a helper spirit of Okazaki Shrine. This is because many rabbits lived in the mountain behind the shrine. There are many sculptures of rabbits on the precincts (they are seen on pedestals of guardian dogs, in dedicatory lanterns, and above doorways). Notably, there is a black granite statue of a rabbit in the washbasin. This rabbit statue is for the believer who wishes to have a baby. Okazaki Shrine is also a shrine for marriage. This is because the famous heroic god Susano Ono Mikoto, who is enshrined at the shrine, slayed a demon to marry the goddess Kushi Inada Hime. For these reasons, many couples hold their wedding at Okazaki shrine. http://kyoto-weddings.jp/okazaki-shrine.html http://www.afar.com/places/higashitenno-okazaki-shrine-sakyo-ward What Is called the Bunny Shrine, is officially called Jyusozan-Mojyubosatsudo (鷲巣山文殊菩薩堂). This magical place is about a 15 minute walk away from the famous Hachiman Shrine. Just walk upstream of the Hirose River on the Sakunami Highway, then look for stairs that lead up into a cluster of towering cedar trees.   Go up and you will find a mix of Shinto, Buddha, and funny bunny images abound.  There is so much going on at this shrine that it is even hard to begin to explain.  In 1603, founder of Sendai feudal lord Date Masamune built Jyusozan-Mojyubosatsudo.  However, in fact, this place is neither shrine, nor temple. It is a place to worship, or at least give thanks and gratitude to, the spirit of the rabbit. Why?  The real reason would be because Date Masamune was born in the year of the rabbit, according to the Chinese lunar calendar.  As such, there are several rabbit images including pictures, wooden votive tablets, a statue at the second set of stairs, and the massive bunny ready to scare any unknowing visitor that walks through the front gate and glimpses to the right!  Look closely at the roof on the main shrine building and from the right angle you can see some rabbit decorations doing handstands!  Upon a little more research, I learned this is one of the 12 Chinese zodiac animal pilgrimage sites in Sendai.  The Bunny Shrine makes for a few fun photos, is not crowded, and is full of mystery.   http://en.japantravel.com/miyagi/bunny-shrine-in-sendai/26984 Since in days of old, the zodiac system used for designating years, months, days, time of day, and direction was adopted by the Japanese.  This happened officially during the reign of the Empress Suiko in the early 7th century.  Over the subsequent centuries, this system- called ETO, or JU-NISHI in Japanese, gained terrific popularity ( because of the fortune telling and decorative opportunities)- especially in the Edo Period (1600-1868).  Even after the Japanese abandoned their old calendar and started using the Western (Gregorian) system, they have still clung firmly to the Zodiac.  In fact now it might be more to be more popular than ever.  Included in the zodiac is the Rabbit/Hare The only problem with this current image of rabbits is that the animal adopted as the fourth sign in the Chinese/Japanese zodiac was not exactly the rabbit ( an animal which breeds in burrows underground and which was introduced from Europe probably just before the Edo Period) but THE HARE- an animal native to Japan (in several species) and which has played a major role in folklore and mythology. As oppossed to symbolizing cuteness, these animals were considered cunning tricksters.   Evidence of this belief can be found in various folk tales featuring very tricky and mischivious hares.  The most famous of these stories is probably KACHIKACHI YAMA-  a childrens story in which a rabbit cruelly tortures and finally kills a tanuki, which had killed an old woman (Yes, Japanese old children`s stories are just as violent and gruesome as European children`s stories!)  Importantly, hares were also considered symbols of  fertility (as they are in most of the rest of the world). for the reason that they breed like……. well, uhh,…. like….RABBITS (as the phrase goes). Besides being symbols of peace, docility and cuteness, they are also considered to be lucky. This is because the Chinese character usually used to write this animals name- 兎 (another character – 卯, is used to represent the rabbit as a zodiac sign) is very similar to the character 免 ( manukareru), which means to get rid of, or make vanish- in other words- rabbits some believe that rabbits will make BAD LUCK DISAPPEAR.  Just in the same way as when you spot a rabbit in the wild and- in the blink of an eye- ITS GONE! Now I am going to discuss the Lepus brachyurus or Japanese hare.  Most of the information I learned was from an article  By Jennifer Holmberg The Japanese hare is reddish-brown, with a body length that ranges from 45 to 54 centimetres (18 to 21 in), and a body weight of 1.3 to 2.5 kilograms (2.9 to 5.5 lb). Its tail will grow to lengths of 2 to 5 centimetres (0.79 to 1.97 in). Its front legs can be from 10 to 15 centimetres (3.9 to 5.9 in) long and the back legs from 12 to 15 centimetres (4.7 to 5.9 in) long. The ears grow to be 6 to 8 centimetres (2.4 to 3.1 in) long, and the tail 2 to 5 centimetres (0.79 to 1.97 in) long.  Adult Japanese hares are mid-size mammals with body masses ranging from 1.3 to 2.5 kg. There are variations in color from a dark brown to a red brown with areas of white. All four subspecies are brownish in the summer, but L. brachyurus angustidens and L.b.lyoni change their coat colors to white in the winter.  In areas of northern Japan, the west coast, and the island of Sado, where there is heavy snowfall, the Japanese hare loses its coloration in the autumn, remaining white until the spring, when the reddish-brown fur returns.   Like all members of the Order Lagomorpha, Japanese hares have a second set of incisors, or peg teeth, behind their first upper incisors. Japanese hares are endemic to Japan. They are commonly found on the mainland islands of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu and most of the surrounding Japanese islands, excluding Hokkaido. There are four subspecies of the Japanese hare found in different geographical regions. Lepus brachyurus angustidens is found in northern Honshu, L. b. lyoni is found on Sado Island, L. b. brachyurus is found in southern Honshu, and L. b. okiensis is found on the Oki Islands. There are variations between Japanese hare subspecies found on the main island and those found on surrounding islands. The dimensions of a mainland female Japanese hare described in 1905 were 505 mm head and body length, 40 mm tail length, 135 mm hindfoot length and 78 mm ear length. Measurements from a female Japanese hare from Oki Island were a 506 mm head and body length, a 54 mm tail, a 138 mm hind foot and a 78 mm ear. The subspecies found on the smaller islands appear to have sexual dimorphism, with the vast majority of skull characteristics being smaller in males than in females. On the main island, the only feature that is not equal in size is the width of the palate. In general, the subspecies on the small islands are often larger in mass, length of head, and length of body. The subspecies on the main island have larger ears, hind feet length and skull size compared to those on the islands. It has been suggested that this variation is not due to insular variation, but that the island forms are actually closer to the ancestral form and the main island subspecies has evolved and adapted to a changing environment. Lepus brachyurus has been divided into two clades and four subspecies. The two clades are found in southern and northern Japan and appear to be the result of these groups evolving differently in these different regions approximately 1.24 million years ago. and the TOHOKU NO-USAGI, Lepus brachyurus angustidens, which is quite similar in habit and appearance, except for one astounding characteristic: these hares turn pure white in winter! Another reason why the ancients might have considered them as sacred creatures. The KYUSHU type live mainly on the eastern side of the mountains which run down the center of Japan. The TOHOKU type live on the western, snowier side. Habitat Japanese hares can be found throughout Japan in urban, rural and forest settings, but the vast majority are found in rural areas. They are typically found in areas with dense shrub-like vegetation and a low tree canopy, often near the edge of forests. Japanese hares are predominant in young, Japanese cedar plantations where there is plenty of incoming light and an abundance of vegetation. Japanese hares are also found near and around rivers or streams. They range from sea level to 2700 m. Japanese hares do not inhabit mountainous areas.  It is mostly found in mountains or hilly areas. It also inhabits forests or brushy areas.  Due to human encroachment, though, this hare has thrived in and around urban environments, so much so that it has become a nuisance in some places. Reproduction The litter size of the Japanese hare varies from 1 to 6. The age of maturity is uncertain, but females probably breed within a year of birth. Breeding continues year round. Several litters are born each year, each of which contain 2–4 individuals. Mating is promiscuous; males chase females, and box to repel rivals. Behavior The Japanese hare, like most hares and rabbits, is crepuscular (feeds mainly in the evening and early morning). It is silent except when it is in distress, and gives out a call for the distress. It can occupy burrows sometimes. Japanese hares are solitary and nocturnal. When they are active at night, they can travel about 1000 m in a single night in forested areas and can cover approximately 6 hectares.  While nothing is known about communication between Japanese hares, information may be inferred from other hare species. There appears to be various types of vocalizations, mostly high-pitched, that occur when hares are confronted with uncomfortable or frightening situations. Like other hares, hearing is an important mode of perception. It is a solitary animal except during mating season, when males and females gather for breeding.  Not much is known about Japanese hare mating systems.  There is, however, generalizable information regarding other species of hares. Aside from arctic hares, which pair each breeding season, most male and female hares are promiscuous. Male and female hares come together during the breeding season and males sometimes display aggressive behavior, such as boxing, in order to compete for mates.  Japanese hares have a long breeding season, beginning in early January and ending in August. The number of litters per season ranges from 4 to 5. The average litter size ranges from one to four, with 1.6 babies being the average and the average weight of the young at birth is 132 g. There is a 1:1 ratio of males to females born in each litter. Within one breeding season, a typical female will average 7.4 young. The weaning period typically takes place 2 to 3 weeks after birth. Female hares become sexually mature at ten months old. The gestation period ranges from 43 to 45 days and the period between births ranges from 33 to 109 days. An interbirth period shorter than the gestation period suggests the possibility of superfoetation. This is further supported by the occurrence of postcoital ovulation in Japanese hares. At the other end of the spectrum, there can also be delays between birth and the next copulation. Sometimes female Japanese hares will chase away males with whom they do not want to copulate. There is some variability in breeding patterns between northern and southern Japanese hares as breeding appears to be affected by temperature, photoperiod, and precipitation. Environments in higher latitudes have decreased temperature and photoperiods throughout the majority of the year and studies of captive animals have found that with increasing latitude, the breeding season, gestation period and litter size decreases. Food Japanese hares are opportunistic herbivores that typically eat newly planted grasses, grasses at plantations, and young trees and shrubs. Saito and Koike determined that their main source of food during the summer comes from the Family Gramineae, which includes the grasses and many commercial crops. In northern Japan, when these grasses are unavailable due to winter snow cover, Japanese hares eat the buds and seedlings of young trees, often found in plantations.  Vegetation found in and around its habitat is where the Japanese hare gets most of its nutrients. Grasses, shrubs, and bushes are all eaten by the hare. The Japanese hare is one of the few hares that will eat the bark off of trees and it does so occasionally which can cause major damage to trees and forests.   Tori and Suzuki examined which trees were favored in the winter and concluded that the vast majority of trees were Phyllostachys praecox, a bamboo which is high in crude protein content.  Other popular winter trees include Acer, Paulownia, Acanthopanax, Aralia and Leguminosae. The trees and shrubs chosen by Japanese hares often have increased amounts of branches and stems, which are typically found in young forests. Most of the trees that are consumed have high protein content.   Japanese hares also engage in coprophagy, or the reingestion of feces. While coprophagy is common in most hares, what is unique in L. brachyurus is that it reingests both soft and hard feces, as they are observed simply swallowing soft feces and chewing hard feces. Coprophagy is done to extract as many nutrients as possible from their difficult to digest plant food. There is also a positive relationship with the lack of available food and an increased occurrence of consuming hard feces. Japanese hares are readily preyed on by red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) and Japanese martens (Martes melampus). The color change in the northern subspecies of Japanese hares, from brown to white in the winter, is likely a cryptic color change to blend into their surrounding environment and avoid predation. Due to the large population sizes of Japanese hares, they are extremely important in the food web. They are prey for larger mammals and they impact the vegetation on which they feed. They can cause damage to woody trees and plants when they are foraging for buds in the winter The Japanese hare population seems to be stable; in some places, it has become a nuisance animal. It is hunted in certain regions for food, fur, pelts, and to help curb its growing numbers.  It is estimated that Japanese hares do not live longer than 4 years in the wild. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_hare http://animaldiversity.org/accounts/Lepus_brachyurus/ http://blog.alientimes.org/2011/01/for-the-year-of-the-rabbit-some-musings-on-rabbits-and-hares-in-japanese-culture-and-history/ Plant of the Week: Fox Glove Word of the Week: Sandwich
