Artificial intelligence has come a long way over just the past few years. It can hold conversations and manage social media, it can create art and edit videos, and it can even write blogs (though not this one). Every aspect of our lives has been touched by AI in one way or another, and that's particularly true for sound. While many podcasters, including some of my guests, now use AI tools for research and sound editing, it's also front and center in sound, from cloning voices to writing its own songs. Royalty-free music is already starting to give way to copyright-free AI music, and a variety of powerful audio content generation tools are scheduled for release later this year.But can computers replace human composers? Will listeners be able to tell the difference? And how did we get from vinyl records to virtual music? It may seem hard to believe, but the very first song written by a computer is older than cassette tapes. The Illiac Suite, or “String Quartet No. 4,” as it's officially named, was created in 1955, using pioneering techniques still found in AI today.The ILLIAC I (ill-ee-ack one) was one of the world's first computers. It was built in 1952 at the University of Illinois, and it filled an entire room. The ILLIAC I weighed five tons and used over two thousand vacuum tubes, some of which had to be replaced each night. A pair of music professors, Lejaren Hiller and Leonard Isaacson, programmed the ILLIAC to compose a string quartet using what's called “stochastic music,” music that's written using probability calculations and mathematical sequences – in this case, Markov chains – instead of human inspiration.One of the researchers who helped build the ILLIAC I was Saburo Muroga, who also built the MUSASINO-1 later that year in Japan. And, as it happens, another breakthrough in computer-generated music would emerge from Japan exactly fifty years after the Illiac Suite's release.Synthetic voices were the next step in creating digital music, and in 1961 the IBM 7094 became the first computer to sing a song, “Daisy Bell.” Another computer voice that could sing was called Perfect Paul, and it was one of the voice settings on 1983‘s text-to-speech DECtalk device. This is the speech synthesizer Professor Stephen Hawking used in his later years, and it was based on the voice of MIT researcher Dennis Klatt. The next decade brought us Auto-Tune, which can digitally modulate singing voices in real-time and has become, for better or worse, a staple of pop music.These developments all came together in 2004 as “Vocaloids,” synthesized voices that can talk and sing with perfect pitch. The most famous of them by far is Crypton Future Media's Hatsune Miku, a second-generation Vocaloid who debuted in 2007. While there have been four more generations and many more voices since then, Miku is the one who captured the public's eyes and ears. Arguably the world's first virtual celebrity, she's opened for Lady Gaga, put in a holographic appearance at the 2024 Coachella festival, and just wrapped up her latest ‘Miku Expo' world tour last December.In some ways, Miku and the Vocaloids that followed marked a turning point in synthetic voices. Older synthesizers like Perfect Paul and Microsoft Sam couldn't be mistaken for an ordinary person, but Vocaloids come closer than anything before – so close, in fact, that some music critics have said they fall into a sort of audio uncanny valley. They sound almost, but not quite, human.Now it's the year 2025, and AI has taken the stage: it's talking, singing, composing, and even creating whole new kinds of sound. Both OpenAI's Jukebox and Google's AI MusicLM can convert text into music, and Nvidia's upcoming Fugatto software is described as a sonic “Swiss Army knife” for creating sounds that have never existed, like a screaming saxophone or a trumpet that meows. Episode 6.14 Avalanche Control 101: techniques and technology used in the North American avalanche industry Have you ever wondered what exactly are RACS? What is a Wyssen tower, or a Gazex exploder? What on earth is a Daisy Bell or an O'Bellx? In this episode guest host Dom Baker sits down with a panel of Canadian avalanche professionals to talk through many of the common methods of avalanche control. Joining Dom are Mark Vesely, Robb Andersen and Val Visotzky, who bring with them a wealth of experience and have used all of the different techniques and technology discussed in this episode. The aim of the episode is to provide some background and context for many of the awesome avalanche control stories you may have heard on the podcast over the past 6 seasons. Mark Vesely is an Avalanche Technician with over twenty years of experience in operations, fieldwork, and planning. He has worked in a wide range of sectors including lift access ski areas, industrial work sites, industry training, and guiding. His work experiences have included a variety of contexts in western Canada, the United States, and Chile. The core of Mark's career has been centered around managing the avalanche safety program at Fernie Alpine Resort from 2005 to 2018. He is a professional member of the Canadian Avalanche Association and a ski guide with Association of Canadian Mountain Guide membership. Controlling avalanches with a wide variety of startegies and tactics has been a big part of Marks career. Robb Andersen is the senior Manager of the BC Ministry of Transportation Avalanche and Weather Program since 2016. Prior to that he ran the Kootenay Pass avalanche program for 6 of the 12 years he spent there. Robb Grew up in Banff and moved to Nelson in the early 1990's for “just one season” – he's still there to this day! He got his start in the avalanche world at Whitewater ski resort on the ski patrol, where he worked from 1994 to 2004. Rob had a working CARDA avalanche rescue dog from 2002 to 2010 and was the President of the Canadian Avalanche Association from 2010-12 and Vice President from 2012-16. Val Visotzky was born in Montreal. He started working as a ski Patroller in 1993 at Sunshine Village, also worked at Norquay, The Remarkables in New Zealand and St.Verans in France. He started his MOTI avalanche career in Stewart in 1999, moved to the Coquihalla program in 2003, and Revelstoke in 2010. He started as the 2ic and started running the Revelstoke program in 2013. In the epic 1968 Stanley Kubrick sci-fi film ‘2001: A Space Odyssey', Hal, an artificial intelligence sings a song called Daisy Bell while being decommissioned by the space crew. Over 50 years later, AI is no longer sci-fi. It's here and it's real. In this episode we're joined by Jon Gillick, a computer scientist that was part of the winning team of the 2021 international AI song contest. Their winning track, "Listen to Your Body Choir" took inspiration from the song Daisy Bell, an homage to the 2001's Hal. Daisy Bell was also the first song to be sung by a computer back in 1961. Jon joins us from the University of California, Berkeley. Jon specializes in the intersection of Machine Learning, Music Technology, and Human-Computer Interaction. His current work centers around using machine learning to explore new ways of understanding and creating music and sound. Welcome to the History of Computing Podcast, where we explore the history of information technology. Because understanding the past prepares us to innovate of the future! Todays episode is is on the microphone. Now you might say “wait, that's not a computer-thing. But given that every computer made in the past decade has one, including your phone, I would beg to differ. Also, every time I record one of these episodes, I seem to get a little better with wielding the instruments, which has led me to spend way more time than is probably appropriate learning about them. So what exactly is a microphone? Well, it's a simple device that converts mechanical waves of energy into electrical waves of energy. Microphones have a diaphragm, much as we humans do and that diaphragm mirrors the sound waves it picks up. So where did these microphones come from? Well, Robert Hooke got the credit for hooking a string to a cup in 1665 and suddenly humans could push sound over distances. Then in 1827 Charles Wheatstone, who invented the telegraph put the word microphone into our vernacular. 1861 rolls around and Johan Philipp Reis build the Reis telephone, which electrified the microphone using a metallic strip that was attached to a vibrating membrane. When a little current was passed through it, it reproduced sound far away. Think of this as more of using electricity to amplify the effects of the string on the cup. But critically, sound had been turned into signal. In 1876, Emile Berliner built a modern microphone while working on the gramophone. He was working with Thomas Edison at the time and would go on to sell the patent for the Microphone to The Bell Telephone Company. Now, Alexander Graham Bell had designed a telephone transmitter in 1876 but ended up in a patent dispute with David Edward Hughes. And as he did with many a great idea, Thomas Edison made the first practical microphone in 1886. This was a carbon microphone that would go on to be used for almost a hundred years. It could produce sound but it kinda' sucked for music. It was used in the first radio broadcast in New York in 1910. The name comes from the cranes of carbon that are packed between two metal plates. Edison would end up introducing the diaphragm and the carbon button microphone would become the standard. That microphone though, often still had a built0-in amp, strengthening the voltage that was the signal sound had been converted to. 1915 rolls around and we get the vacuum tube amplifier. And in 1916, E.C. Wente of Bell Laboratories designed the condenser microphone. This still used two plates, but each had an electrical charge and when the sound vibrations moved the plates, the signal was electronically amplified. Georg Neumann then had the idea to use gold plated PVC and design the mic such that as sound reached the back of the microphone it would be cancelled, resulting in a cardioid pattern, making it the first cardioid microphone and an ancestor to the microphone I'm using right now. In the meantime, other advancements were coming. Electromagnets made it possible to add moving coils and ribbons and Wente and A.C. Thuras would then invent the dynamic, or moving-coil microphone in 1931. This was much more of an omnidirectional pattern and It wasn't until 1959 that the Unidyne III became the first mic to pull in sound from the top of the mic, which would change the shape and look of the microphone forever. Then in 1964 Bell Labs brought us the electrostatic transducer mic and the microphone exploded with over a billion of these built every year. Then Sennheiser gave us clip-on microphones in the 80s, calling their system the Mikroport and releasing it through Telefunken. No, Bootsie Collins was not a member of Telefunken. He'd been touring with James Brown for awhile ad by then was with the Parliament Funkadelic. Funk made a lot of use of all these innovations in sound though. So I see why you might be confused. Other than the fact that all of this was leading us up to a point of being able to use microphones in computers, where's the connection? Well, remember Bell Labs? In 1962 they invented the electret microphone. Here the electrically biased diaphragms have a capacitor that changes with the vibrations of sound waves. Robert Noyce had given us the integrated circuit in 1959 and of microphones couldn't escape the upcoming Moore's law, as every electronics industry started looking for applications. Honeywell came along with silicon pressure sensors, and by 65 Harvey Nathanson gave us a resonant-gated transistors. That would be put on a Monolithic chip by 66 and through the 70s micro sensors were developed to isolate every imaginable environmental parameter, including sound. At this point, computers were still big hulking things. But computers and sound had been working their way into the world for a couple of decades. The technologies would evolve into one another at some point obviously. In 1951, Geoff Hill pushed pules to a speaker using the Australian CSIRAC and Max Mathews at Bell Labs had been doing sound generation on an IBM 704 using the MUSIC program, which went a step further and actually created digital audio using PCM, or Pulse-Code Modulation. The concept of sending multiplexed signals over a wire had started with the telegraph back in the 1870s but the facsimile, or fax machine, used it as far back as 1920. But the science and the math wasn't explaining it all to allow for the computer to handle the rules required. It was Bernard Oliver and Claude Shannon that really put PCM on the map. We've mentioned Claude Shannon on the podcast before. He met Alan Turing in 43 and went on to write crazy papers like A Mathematical Theory of Cryptography, Communication Theory of Secrecy Systems, and A Mathematical Theory of Communications. And he helped birth the field of information theory. When the math nerds showed up, microphones got way cooler. By the way, he liked to juggle on a unicycle. I would too if I could. They documented that you could convert audio to digital by sampling audio and modulation would be mapping the audio on a sine wave at regular intervals. This analog-to-digital converter could then be printed on a chip that would output encoded digital data that would live on storage. Demodulate that with a digital to analog converter, apply an amplification, and you have the paradigm for computer sound. There's way more, like anti-aliasing and reconstruction filters, but someone will always think you're over-simplifying. So the evolutions came, giving us multi-track stereo casettes, the fax machines and eventually getting to the point that this recording will get exported into a 16-bit PCM wave file. PCM would end up evolving to LPCM, or Linear pulse-control modulation and be used in CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray's. Oh and lossleslly compressed to mp3, mpeg4, etc. By the 50s, MIT hackers would start producing sound and even use the computer to emit the same sounds Captain Crunch discovered the tone for, so they could make free phone calls. They used a lot of paper tape then, but with magnetic tape and then hard drives, computers would become more and more active in audio. By 61 John Kelly Jr and Carol Lockbaum made an IBM 7094 mainframe sing Daisy Bell. Arthur C. Clarke happened to see it and that made it into 2001: A Space Odyssey. Remember hearing it sing that when it was getting taken apart? But the digital era of sound recording is marked as starting with the explosion of Sony in the 1970s. Moore's Law, they got smaller, faster, and cheaper and by the 2000s microelectromechanical microphones web mainstream, which are what are built into laptops, cell phones, and headsets. You see, by then it was all on a single chip. Or even shared a chip. These are still mostly omnidirectional. But in modern headphones, like Apple AirPods then you're using dual beam forming microphones. Beamforming uses multiple sensor arrays to extract sounds based on a whole lot of math; the confluence of machine learning and the microphone. You see, humans have known to do many of these things for centuries. We hooked a cup to a wire and sound came out the other side. We electrified it. We then started going from engineering to pure science. We then analyzed it with all the math so we better understood the rules. And that last step is when it's time to start writing software. Or sometimes it's controlling things with software that gives us the necessary understanding to make the next innovative leap. The invention of the microphone doesn't really belong to one person. Hook, Wheatstone, Reis, Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, Wente, Thuras, Shannon, Hill, Matthews, and many, many more had a hand in putting that crappy mic in your laptop, the really good mic in your cell phone, and the stupidly good mic in your headphones. Some are even starting to move over to Piezoelectric. But I think I'll save that for another episode. The microphone is a great example of that slow, methodical rise, and iterative innovation that makes technologies truly lasting. It's not always shockingly abrupt or disruptive. But those innovations are permanently world-changing. Just think, because of the microphone and computer getting together for a blind date in the 40s you can now record your hit album in Garage Band. For free. Or you call your parents any time you want. Now pretty much for free. So thank you for sticking with me through all of this. It's been a blast. You should probably call your parents now. And thanks to James Carmon, professor in the University of Georgia's School of Agriculture, the school purchased one in 1964. Not only could the computer sing, it helped put man on the moon.

Lee and Daniel are back for the first episode of a three episode sci-fi break before moving on to continue their sex comedy series they started last year. Since they'll be jumping right back into tits and other adult low brow content, they decided to get really damn high brow and look at what is considered one of the greatest films ever made... and it's not-so-loved sequel. In this episode they look at Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece "2001: A Space Odyssey" from 1968, and then Peter Hyams' 1984 sequel "2010: The Year We Make Contact". A lot of the conversation revolves around comparing the books to the films; Lee and Daniel's personal connections to the films and their source material; how the sequel stacks up to the original film; and how dated these films feel in the post 2010 world of today. There is no pretense here about covering every aspect of the films, as there's already been far too much written and said about just the production of "2001" alone. Lee and Daniel do try to touch on every aspect of both films to some degree, but the conversation is far more casual than it is scholarly. 本期话题包括 danah boyd 的《It’s Complicated》,Rio 实地体验 Force Touch 触摸板的感受,主打高音质牌的音乐流媒体服务 Tidal,以及 Meerkat 和 Periscope。 每月三十元,支持李如一和 Rio 把《IT 公论》做成最好的科技播客。请访问 itgonglun.com/member。 今天的标题看起来有点故弄玄虚,但我保证是认真的。 香港导演/摄影师杨凡和东方不败林青霞当然没有在玩 Periscope——虽然我不认识他们,但这个猜测应该八九不离十。2013 年 11 月 3 日,杨凡在香港《苹果日报》的一篇题为〈念念华严经〉)的专栏里讲了林青霞 Skype 视频的故事。林青霞答应时任台湾文化部长的龙应台以视频连线的方式参加一场记者招待会。大概是之前没怎么用过 Skype,她希望在正式出场前夜先和好友杨凡彩排一番。结果杨凡发现效果惨不忍睹: ……午夜后的美人终于和我 Skype 连上线。望见她那灯光不足的画面,就知美人对电脑白痴过我。我问美人什么时候懂得这电脑科技?她说昨天。接着打开麻雀灯,用不同的角度替自己打灯,有时又用一张小白纸作反光板,希望可以打个大平光。完全像个小学生…… 身为耽美派摄影师、为无数明星拍过写真的杨凡当然无法接受: 我心想一个记招怎可如此随便,何况吸镜率特高的林美人。我说为了你的粉丝,绝不能随便,今晚好好休息,明天下午到府上替你打个美人光,一定要美丽过美丽! 说做就做,杨凡第二天提早几个小时跑到林青霞家里帮她布光,置景,「找三四个家仆将家具重新搬移,千万要做到简单自然而不着痕迹」。 这个故事一直在我心中挥之不去,原因之一是我也有过类似的经历。某次和一位瑞典仁兄视频,对方光线自然,肤色润泽,我则仿佛刚刚熬了两个通宵的死狗一般。数日后再次拨通他的 Skype 之前,我随手拿起桌上的廉价台灯从侧面照向自己,结果对方第一句话就说:「Ah! You have better lighting!」这要是被杨凡看到了,大概是连幼儿园水平都不如的失格把戏,但即便如此,打不打光,效果立竿见影。 这两个故事给我的教训是:视频好难。不是量子物理的难,视频制作不是某种需要特殊禀赋才能掌握的东西。但视频是如此「重」的一种媒介,灯光、布景、化妆、录音、摄像、表演都牵涉到种种必须反复练习才能掌握的技巧。只有当所有这些条件都被满足的前提下,一条还过得去的视频才能被拍出来。嗯,和你们这些写文章的人不一样,我们视频狗光是做到让人觉得能看已经竭尽全力了。 现在可以回到 Periscope 和 Meerkat 的话题。关于最近突然爆红的这两个视频直播软件的讨论大多聚焦在 Periscope 的产权归属上:作为被 Twitter 收购了的公司,它可以名正言顺地使用 Twitter 的社交圈信息(social graph)。相反,Meerkat 走红还不到一周,就遭到了 Twitter 的限制。但在我看来,视频制作的重量感才是 Periscope 类服务长期发展的最大阻力。一个普通人每天有多长时间是身处一种达到了播出级别的环境当中?又有多少时间和动力去把自己以及周围环境布置到可以相对不那么寒碜地出现在镜头前的状态?即便是林青霞,也需要老友职业摄影师特地跑来帮忙。 一个常见的误解是把「全方位」和「多角度」等同于「好」。任何有过自拍经验的人都明白,好看的角度是有限的。好的角度可以点石成金,糟糕的角度能把美女变成猪头。如果你认为 Periscope 一类的服务可以鼓励庶民在偶然性地经过突发事件现场时可以发挥「公民记者」的作用,请不要忘记这种使用场景早就被 YouTube 满足。更关键的是,公民记者并没有足够的动机出现在突发事件的现场。在场是偶然,不在场是必然。需要有多少个偶然同时在场,方可达到足够全的方位和足够多的角度?什么样的机制能从这些角度中选出少数值得留下的那几个? 然后你会发现,传统的视频生产流程早已通过多年养成的专业主义解决了这些问题。 一个基本前提是:人类对于劣质视频(以及音频)的容忍度远低于对劣质文字的容忍度。看一眼满篇别字的潦草作文,如果观点有趣,拿了就走也不太亏。要你去看心中偶像在未经准备的状态下于屏幕前呈现出的怪相,就完全是另一回事了。视频和文字一样,是一种广义上的书写工具。「我没兴趣看你 140 个字的絮叨」和「我没兴趣看你家冰箱里的东西」的区别在于,除去创意和构思的时间后,写出一条聪明段子所花的时间比拍出一条精彩的实时冰箱视频要少太多。 当然,有一种人不会在意你粗制滥造的视频:爱你的人。对于他们,我们已经有了 FaceTime, Skype 视频,微信视频,LINE 视频…… 说了这么多,我们对 Periscope 和 Meerkat 还是持中立性的开放态度。如果你有兴趣知道 Rio 和李如一的冰箱里有什么东西的话,请在这两个系统里关注 @itgonglun。 李如一最近在玩的 app(Rio 最近没有玩什么 app) Layout from Instagram Last Voyage Scandal in the Spotlight 最近我们读的一些文章 重新发明了孤独 The Weak Universalism 相关链接 danah boyd: It’s Complicated Daisy Bell 歌词 IBM 704 在 1961 年演唱的 Daisy Bell 《二零零一太空漫游》中 HAL 9000 电脑被关闭的场景 Bret Victor Force Touch 触摸板背后的论文:Computational haptics : the Sandpaper system for synthesizing texture for a force-feedback display IT 公论第五十九期:「让世界人民合法地过上中国人的日子」 极低功耗的芯片技术 微软推出 Surface 3 亚马逊在加拿大 British Columbia 试飞小型无人飞行器 Santana: Borboletta (Spotify) 杨凡 杨凡关于林青霞和龙应台 Skype 视频的文章 Meerkat Periscope Tidal Layout from Instagram Last Voyage Scandal in the Spotlight Visual Novel 梗:All your base are belong to us 人物简介 李如一:字节社创始人。 Rio: Apple4us 程序员。
