Interview by Kris PetersWith the modern world embracing technology like never before, it was only a matter of time before the metal scene and metal music became caught up in its web. Don't get me wrong, technology and the wonders of modern advancement have long been a part of the music industry - everywhere from live sound to studio tricks to programmed drums - but it is the concept of AI that has been more divisive and controversial than anything else. But it has always been inevitable. Like it or loathe it, AI is not only here, it is also integrating into more of life and music than some of us care to admit.Until now, heavy metal has been unchartered territory for anything AI-generated. Musically there have been many advancements but when it came time to replicating hard rock/metal vocals the challenge seemed to always be insurmountable. But not any more.In conjunction with AI vocal synthesis company Eclipsed Sounds, Seann Nicols (Westfield Massacre, Adler's Appetite, Quiet Riot) has been working on something new and exciting called HXVOC, the first-ever AI rock/metal vocalist for Synthesizer V Studio 2. This is an entirely new technology that allows producers to generate fully realistic rock and metal vocals, complete with rasp, grit, and even full-on screams.HXVOC is a first-of-its-kind AI vocal instrument that gives musicians and producers unprecedented access to a professional rock/metal vocalist without needing a real singer. It's powered by Synthesizer V Studio 2, the most advanced vocal synthesis engine available today. The key breakthrough is that HXVOC can accurately perform aggressive rock and metal vocal techniques, including rasp, grit, belting, growls, and screams—which have never been done at this level in a vocal synth before.Rather than replacing singers, HXVOC is an instrument for musicians - just like drum machines and amp sims. It empowers producers, bands, and solo artists by letting them create fully produced songs with high-quality rock vocals. This is a major first for the vocal synthesis world, and it's already making waves. Two official showcase videos have been released, original songs demonstrating HXVOC's capabilities in both a Sleep Token - style track and a modern rock song created specifically to highlight its vocal modes. This technology is about to change music production in a big way, especially for rock and metal. Now, any producer in the world can access a professional-quality rock vocal without needing to record a singer. With AI-powered vocals becoming more advanced, this could be a turning point for the industry.A known and respected hard rock/metal vocalist, Nicols has approached things from the perspective of a working musician and is adamant HXVOC will only benefit the music industry, not destroy it. HEAVY sat down with him for a chat to find out more about HXVOC and ask a few questions that we think may pose a concern."It's got a lot of moving parts," he began. "And I'm new to the space, so I'm by no means an expert. But I'll give you the best to my knowledge. Basically, AI vocal synths have existed for a long time. Apparently this has been like 25 years in the making. I guess it started with a thing called Vocaloid, which is a company that Yamaha founded. And it started out as a Japanese-based company, and they did like a lot of anime, and it went into pop and electronic. And that's mainly where the AI voices have found most of their traction. But to get a voice that worked for rock was really hard and challenging. Because they couldn't get the grit, they couldn't get the… they couldn't get the aggression to come out of the voice. It just sounded very robotic, and they could produce clean tones, but they couldn't produce that like guttural, like raw that you need for rock, right? So basically this is the first time that we've had those intense techniques captured and reproduced with an AI. And it took us about, well, two years in development. And it was actually just a meeting of technology and the engineering behind it and the team and the training and special techniques that all had to go into capturing and being able to create this voice that people can get like a real rock metal vocalist right out of the computer with the AI."We hit him with the question many are wanting to know: Is HXVOC designed to actually replace a vocalist in a band?"Not at all," he stressed. "No. It's an instrument. It's not a replacement. And I realize that's a concern, but, you know, I was toying around with this technology for a long time. I mean, it started with drums, and then it turned out you could do your drums and program your bass, and then they created guitars and synthesizers, and there's orchestral libraries and everything. And this is just an extension of that, but now for the human voice. And now when we listen to demos that are made by musicians on their computers, the drums sound pretty killer. And it's because of guys like Stephen Slate that made the really complicated process of recording drums in a big studio, and you need all these microphones and these crazy consoles and engineers. I mean, it's super complicated to get a good drum sound, but he just made it so it was really easy so you could just load it up on your computer put your beats in and voila it's like sounds like it was recorded in a million dollar studio and uh that's what we've done essentially with a rock voice now."In the full interview, we engaged in a detailed discussion about the evolving role of technology in the music industry, particularly focusing on Seann's collaboration with Eclipse Sounds and the introduction of their AI vocal instrument, HXVOC. Seann emphasized the potential of AI vocal technology to enhance songwriting and studio work, viewing it as a valuable tool rather than a threat to jobs in the industry.Seann elaborated on the capabilities of HXVOC, highlighting its ability to capture the nuances of rock and metal vocal techniques, which have historically been challenging to record. He reassured that the software is intended as an instrument to empower musicians rather than replace live vocalists. We addressed some of the concerns that invariably come with new innovations, his role in HXVOC, how it will benefit the heavy metal industry and plenty more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Artificial intelligence has come a long way over just the past few years. It can hold conversations and manage social media, it can create art and edit videos, and it can even write blogs (though not this one). Every aspect of our lives has been touched by AI in one way or another, and that's particularly true for sound. While many podcasters, including some of my guests, now use AI tools for research and sound editing, it's also front and center in sound, from cloning voices to writing its own songs. Royalty-free music is already starting to give way to copyright-free AI music, and a variety of powerful audio content generation tools are scheduled for release later this year. But can computers replace human composers? Will listeners be able to tell the difference? And how did we get from vinyl records to virtual music? It may seem hard to believe, but the very first song written by a computer is older than cassette tapes. The Illiac Suite, or “String Quartet No. 4,” as it's officially named, was created in 1955, using pioneering techniques still found in AI today. The ILLIAC I (ill-ee-ack one) was one of the world's first computers. It was built in 1952 at the University of Illinois, and it filled an entire room. The ILLIAC I weighed five tons and used over two thousand vacuum tubes, some of which had to be replaced each night. A pair of music professors, Lejaren Hiller and Leonard Isaacson, programmed the ILLIAC to compose a string quartet using what's called “stochastic music,” music that's written using probability calculations and mathematical sequences – in this case, Markov chains – instead of human inspiration. One of the researchers who helped build the ILLIAC I was Saburo Muroga, who also built the MUSASINO-1 later that year in Japan. And, as it happens, another breakthrough in computer-generated music would emerge from Japan exactly fifty years after the Illiac Suite's release.Synthetic voices were the next step in creating digital music, and in 1961 the IBM 7094 became the first computer to sing a song, “Daisy Bell.” Another computer voice that could sing was called Perfect Paul, and it was one of the voice settings on 1983‘s text-to-speech DECtalk device. This is the speech synthesizer Professor Stephen Hawking used in his later years, and it was based on the voice of MIT researcher Dennis Klatt. The next decade brought us Auto-Tune, which can digitally modulate singing voices in real-time and has become, for better or worse, a staple of pop music. These developments all came together in 2004 as “Vocaloids,” synthesized voices that can talk and sing with perfect pitch. The most famous of them by far is Crypton Future Media's Hatsune Miku, a second-generation Vocaloid who debuted in 2007. While there have been four more generations and many more voices since then, Miku is the one who captured the public's eyes and ears. Arguably the world's first virtual celebrity, she's opened for Lady Gaga, put in a holographic appearance at the 2024 Coachella festival, and just wrapped up her latest ‘Miku Expo' world tour last December. In some ways, Miku and the Vocaloids that followed marked a turning point in synthetic voices. Older synthesizers like Perfect Paul and Microsoft Sam couldn't be mistaken for an ordinary person, but Vocaloids come closer than anything before – so close, in fact, that some music critics have said they fall into a sort of audio uncanny valley. They sound almost, but not quite, human. Now it's the year 2025, and AI has taken the stage: it's talking, singing, composing, and even creating whole new kinds of sound. Both OpenAI's Jukebox and Google's AI MusicLM can convert text into music, and Nvidia's upcoming Fugatto software is described as a sonic “Swiss Army knife” for creating sounds that have never existed, like a screaming saxophone or a trumpet that meows. Another new song-generation service by Musical AI and Beatoven.ai that's set to...

In this episode we will investigate the mysterious world of Vocaloid. What is it? Why is it? And most importantly, does it upset Chri$tians? Vocaloid is a voice synthesizer program launched by the Yamaha Corporation in 2004. This software allows users to synthesize human singing by typing in the lyrics, much like text to speech. Each voicebank was modelled after professional singers and each voice bank has a custom avatar. Each voice has an animated character that goes along with that voice. For example there are Kagamine Len and Rin who are twins with yellow hair. Then there's Megurine Luka who has long pink hair and is very elegant. The most popular Vocaloid character is Hatsune Miku. A sixteen year old girl with long blue pigtails. She has become the defining icon of the Vocaloid phenomena. When you think of Vocaloid, and I'm sure you do as often as I do, you think of Hatsune Miku. This episode contains weird marriages, disappointing performances and ghosts! Also making cameos, Lady Gaga, David Letterman, Willy Nelson, Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Wimbledon, Pepper's Ghost, John Henry Pepper, Tupac, Easy E, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Michael Jackson, Frank Zappa, Ronnie James Dio, Akihiko Kondo, Chiharu Dawn, God-ish, Pinnochio-P, Friedrich Nietzsche, Teniwoha, LGBTQ+, Song for Great Satan, Nanka-P, Song for a Great Evil King, Hachioji-P, q*Left, Sweet Devil, Valentines Day, Project Sekai Colourful Stage featuring Hatsune Miku, Mizuki Akiyama, Mrs Lovejoy, Ferry, She Could Be Satan For All I Know, Gumi, Gray Slate, Sad Satan, Oliver, John Lydon, Johnny Rotten, Sex Pistols, Jimmy Saville, Lower One's Eyes, Nulut, Osamu Dazai. #SketchComedy #Sketch #Comedy #Sketch Comedy #Atheist #Science #History #Atheism #ConspiracyTheory #Sceptical #Scepticism #Mythology #Religion #Devil #Satan #Skeptic #Debunk #HeavyMetal #anime #manga #animation #japanese

In what Indy calls “the worst episode in a while” Samantha recommends The Magic of Disney's Animal Kingdom, which explores the animals and people behind the attraction. It may or may not feature kittens wearing scrubs delivering water buffalo babies. Indy has updates on some of his favourite animal starring Netflix series like; Aggretsuko, Rilakuma and Kaoru, Bee and Puppycat, and the all lemur reboot of Frasier. Then we preview next week's big watch starring everyone's favourite sheep-dog Babe! I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha & Indy Randhawa Magic of Disney's Animal Kingdom gives viewers an all-access pass behind the scenes of two of the world's most famous animal parks - Disney's Animal Kingdom and Epcot's The Seas. For the first time ever, audiences will be able to see what it takes to care for the rarest and most beautiful creatures on earth, and operate a theme park unlike any other. In this multi-episode series, we will be revealing the park as never seen before. Bee and PuppyCat is an American adult animated streaming television series created and written by Natasha Allegri.[2][3][4] The series revolves around Bee (voiced by Allyn Rachel), an unemployed woman in her early twenties, who encounters a mysterious creature named PuppyCat (voiced by the Vocaloid program Oliver). She adopts this apparent cat-dog hybrid, and together they go on a series of temporary jobs to pay off her monthly rent. These bizarre jobs take the duo across strange worlds out in space. The original series was produced by Frederator Studios with the animation initially outsourced to South Korean studio Dong Woo Animation. Aggretsuko, also known by its original Japanese title Aggressive Retsuko (Japanese: アグレッシブ烈子, Hepburn: Aguresshibu Retsuko), is a Japanese animated comedy streaming television series based on the eponymous character created by "Yeti" for the mascot company Sanrio.[2][3] The character first appeared in a series of animated shorts by Fanworks which aired on TBS Television between April 2016 and March 2018. Rilakkuma and Kaoru (リラックマとカオルさん, Rirakkuma to Kaoru-san) is a 2019 stop-motion animation series created by Dwarf Studio in cooperation with San-X that premiered on Netflix on April 19, 2019. In October 2020, it was announced another stop-motion series Rilakkuma's Theme Park Adventure would be released on Netflix. It has the same production staff as the previous series.[1] Rilakkuma's Theme Park Adventure was released worldwide exclusively on Netflix on August 25, 2022.

Composition by The Organizing Committee. "The Organizing Committee is influenced by cybernetics and analog computing. I'm an independent researcher and artist exploring the social impacts of emerging technology. Much of my practice involves digging deep into the origins of computing to see how the logic and ideology of obsolete machines influences the use and development of today's "cutting edge" tech. "Exploring the obsolete sounds of technology is one way of thinking through those logics. Whereas my research and writing is visual and intellectual, The Organizing Committee is an attempt to bring my research to a sonic landscape. Sound can move us in ways that reading can't. Blending analog sounds, AI-generated lyrics, and finding inspiration from cybernetics, the result is a pop band that couldn't exist without computers and is constantly engaged in rethinking our dependency on machines. "When I learned about the obsolete sound project, I was delighted to participate. I chose the sound of an obsolete technology, the Apple iBook Duo. It was an early (1992-97) notebook computer, capable of plugging into a larger monitor and unplugging to take on the road. You can trace the origin of the iPhone back to this "mobile computer." Hearing the clicking and clacking of the keyboard makes it visceral, brings it to life. ""Automatic Sleep" was created from a sample of that clacking, finding rhythmic structures and breaks where I could. The rhythm of the click, tapping a keyboard over and over again to get it to wake up, made me think of waking up a computer from sleep mode. When I'm frustrated by a broken machine, I literally bang the same key over and over again for a while, even though I know it's hopeless. That's a kind of automatic sleep all it's own. "The clacking rhythms inspired the bassline and from that, the melodies. Next were lyrics: The Organizing Committee uses a vocal synthesizer, Vocaloid, to sing. Usually, I create lyrics using AI-generated text from a special data set I curated of relevant books and articles. For this track's lyrics, I dug up an old iBook Duo user's manual from the Internet Archive. There's a whole section on bringing the computer back from "Automatic Sleep." It mentions, and I found this odd, that any key except for caps lock would wake the system from sleep. "I was struck that this was a machine that emerged just after the Web and that caps lock was the only key that would never wake it up. Like many people, I'm skeptical of the way the Web has splintered our societies, our social discourse. Caps lock, to me, is the equivalent of screaming online, and yet, in the manual it's clear: Caps lock won't wake the machine. It won't wake up our political rivals in the midst of a Twitter argument, either. I wished all of our machines came with that warning printed at the top of the keyboard: "Caps lock won't wake you." Clicking the same keys over and over again doesn't change anything: whether it's an obsolete machine, a Twitter bot, or one of the many frustrating conversations we live with in online spaces. We all need something else to wake us up from our own 'automatic sleep'!" ____ The Organizing Committee has an album, "The Day Computers Went Obsolete," on the Canadian netlabel Notype. Eryk Salvaggio's website is cyberneticforests.com. This is part of the Obsolete Sounds project, the world's biggest collection of disappearing sounds and sounds that have become extinct – remixed and reimagined to create a brand new form of listening. ANNOUNCEMENTS The August Edition of the HSS Song Contest is over with Mark George coming out on top as the winner. Although it was incredibly hard to choose a winner, Mark's song, “The Other Side of Sound” was picked due to its arrangement, it's clarity and balance, as well as the interest it generated even as an instrumental piece. You can hear the song and listen to my comments on it here: (https://youtu.be/AN9DeEWihcw?t=3988) The September Edition of the HSS Song Contest is on! Here are the guidelines for the contest. Original non-copyrighted work No lewd lyrics or vulgarity One submission per entrant File submission in WAV or MP3 Deadline September 25th Upload your songs here: http://bit.ly/September-Submission Why would you want to upload your song? The main purpose I started the song contest was to inspire musicians to release more music and to generate interest in others music, while providing insight and constructive dialogue from a professional standpoint on how to improve the song submitted. Now, a few months into the HSS Song Contest routine, this segment of the channel has taken on a life of its own! The community it has created and the feedback that has been generated from within the community is amazing! There have been collaborations, friendships, and professional connections made as a result of the contest and so many have claimed that they are learning more and more every single time around. The song that is chosen as the winner receives a free mix/master of the winning entry from yours truly and the results are shared on the channel to help everyone benefit from knowing what went into it. Wanna join the HSS Session Players? (https://bit.ly/Session_Player_Sign-up) From time to time I am asked to help out on a project or need some instrumentation for personal client work. While I can play a Bass, I am not a Bassist. That said, I am creating a list of Session Players that I can call on to work on projects. If you'd like the opportunity to work on some projects and collaborate with other like minded musicians. Sign up! EAR TO THE GROUND Every guitarist knows that becoming a better player takes lots and lots of practice. Positive Grid's “Spark” amplifier is a Bluetooth-connected practice amp/speaker packed with features including tons of onboard effects, a nice assortment of I/O ports, dual speakers, and a wealth of panel controls and presets. It gets better: With the Spark's free companion app, you can play along with tunes that you stream through the amp and have your mobile device display which chords to play as you go. Or, you can have the app lay down an accompanying drum and bass track for you to jam along to. The Spark mobile app (for Android and iOS) gives you access to a massive library of amp models and effects that let you emulate the sound you get from classic tube amps, acoustic amps, bass amps, and other types of amplifiers. You can also create customized effects using virtual pedals for Overdrive, Noise Gate, Delay, Modulation, and Reverb, or you can access Positive Grid's BIAS-powered tone library that contains more than 10,000 amp and effects presets that let you mimic the guitar sounds of your favorite players such as Jimi Hendrix, BB King, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and many others. If you're a guitarist and you're looking for an affordable mobile rig to practice with at home, at work, or even on your commute, the Spark may be the solution you;re looking for.. -This months 3 FREE Plugins- 1. Temper Temper is a modern digital distortion plugin featuring a rich saturation stage and a unique phase distortion. Use the variable saturation curve to add warmth and edge to your sound, and let the phase distortion bring character and clarity through your mix. Temper also features a simple resonant lowpass filter and a feedback path to drive the intensity of the tone. Watch the Temper Video demo here. 2. Alter/Ego Alter/Ego is based on the award winning technology featured in chipspeech but instead of targeting Vintage voice technology, it focuses on more ‘modern' (1990+) singing synthesis algorithms and research. It is specially tailored for musical needs – simply type in your lyrics, and then play on your MIDI keyboard. It's a true synthesizer, the sound can be extensively modified for easy and expressive performances. 3. Driftmaker Driftmaker is a delay disintegration device that parses incoming audio, recalls certain parts and adds analog deterioration to the signal. MAIN THOUGHT 1. Consider Using Auto-Tune The name “autotune” can have what some people would consider to be negative connotations. The artificial, robot-voice style that is popular in some genres is wildly unpopular with other people. But the truth is that modern auto tuning software is capable of far more subtle vocal correction than simply turning your voice into a robot. For a start, it's variable, meaning you can apply a little or a lot. And then there's micro pitch controls, formants and other smaller tweaks that can take individual notes or whole clips and pull them to where they need to be without sounding like they have been processed. Antares is at the forefront of these kinds of tools but there's also Melodyne, and DAWs like Cubase (VariAudio) and Logic (Flex Pitch) have very powerful tools built-in. Used with care, they can rescue almost any vocal. 2. Warm Up This is something you can do to help your performance at the source, regardless of any processing that may come later in the chain. Professional singers have all kinds of techniques and routines they use to keep their voices in shape and prepare before recording takes. You don't necessarily have to go as far as copying them, but singing a few scales, regulating your breathing and making sure you are hydrated before starting will all help you to nail a better performance than if you just turn up and begin. 3. Generate Harmonies You can bolster a vocal performance by adding harmonies, but you may not be confident in singing them yourself. The good news is that there are several ways to do it in software. Cakewalk is one DAW that has a tool for doing just this, and any tool or plug-in that lets you pitch shift audio without changing its speed (i.e. most DAWs these days) can be utilised to create harmonies on a new audio track. However, simply pitch shifting a clip to use as a harmony may not always sound great, and it's better to get access to individual notes so you can truly control the way they interact with your main vocal melody. SynchroArts Revoice Pro 4 is another very powerful tool for working with the pitch and timing of vocals. 4. Use Dedicated Vocal Plug-Ins Recording while monitoring through software insert effects is much less of a hassle these days, with computers powerful enough to operate at very low latency, or indeed interfaces with onboard DSP and direct monitoring available. But it's usually advisable to record a vocal clean and then add processing afterwards so that it can be tweaked and edited in the most flexible way possible. Specialist tools like iZotope's Nectar provide a multitude of controls tailored specially to vocals like breath control, saturation, de-essing and more. Waves also makes some excellent vocal processors and if you don't want to spend too much, you can use your DAW's bundled plugs in a chain to combine things like EQ, compression, de-essing and saturation into a ready-to-use preset to apply to your vocals. 5. Consider Software-Generated Accompaniment If you're not happy with your own performance it's always an option to get someone else in to sing for you. But if that is not a possibility, you could look at software-generated backing or even lead vocals. Instruments like EastWest's Symphonic Choirs, Hollywood Backup Singers, Voices of Soul and Voices of Opera use something called WordBuilder, a technology that lets you type in text and then has the instrument recreate it using its sample library. Yamaha's Vocaloid is another “virtual singer” that lets you build up authentic sounding vocal parts from a large library, bypassing the need to sing for yourself. 6. Process More Not necessarily just the kinds of processing that you would ordinarily do like adding compression and reverb, but consider more weird and wonderful options. A vocal that is perhaps lacking in body can be run through all kinds of effects to change the way it sounds including guitar fx, delays, lo-fi effects and much more. It's true that this approach might not suit a pop single for example, but for many other genres of music it can help to blend a vocal into a track in interesting and unusual ways. Since plug-ins are all virtual, you can always experiment and try a few things, undoing them later if you decide down the line that they aren't right. 7. Learn Mic Technique The way you interact with a microphone can have a big impact on the way a vocal is recorded. Obviously to begin with you'll need a decent quality studio mic and a recording environment that's as soundproofed as you can reasonably make it. If you find it necessary to move closer to the mic because your vocal projection isn't so strong, you need to mitigate the proximity effect by making sure you have at least one pop shield, and possibly even two if you are very close to the mic. Some mics also have internal popshields, though every vocalist should really own an external one as well. It's also vital to maintain a consistent distance from the mic while singing - around 6-8 inches is recommended but this will depend on the power of your voice. Moving around while singing will affect the recording level, so is to be avoided if at all possible. 8. Sing Like Nobody's Watching For a less experienced vocalist, singing live into a mic, even in a studio, can make them self-conscious. It's natural to be a little nervous but it can also affect the quality of a performance. You might find that clearing the room of people - the control room if you're in a studio - can help with this. You may need to keep the engineer around to stop and start recording, but they could also set a loop around the track, activate recording and then you could try several takes in a row, all without anyone else around. Home Studio Simplified exists to simplify the complexities of the Home Studio and to help you make professional music in a less than professional space. We can Dream alone. We can Create alone. But Together we can achieve so much more.

In the Meiji at 150 Student Podcast, UBC students discuss aspects of Japanese culture they research in class. In this episode, a student charts the popularity of "J-Pop," or Japanese pop music, spotlighting Japanese pop idols, notable groups, and influential production companies. We also discuss differences between Japanese and Western musical styles, and the crowd-sourced Vocaloid musical act Hatsune Miku.
Our fandom journey this season takes us all the way to Japan to talk about fans of the world's most famous _virtual_ pop idol: Hatsune Miku! How did such a relatively niche thing become a global phenomenon? And who is pulling the strings?? Next week, we're off to Mexico to talk about fans of that exciting sport: Lucha Libre! ## Episode outline ### Fandom Facts **Origins:** Hatsune Miku is a VOCALOID. What is a VOCALOID? A VOCALOID is a singing synthesizer application developed by YAMAHA. It was an international effort to create a synthesizer to act as a replacement singer.
