There's little doubt that music is an integral part of what it means to be human. But how did it first arise, how did musical instruments and compositions become ever more sophisticated and why does listening to or playing music bring us so much joy? In this episode, we speak to science writer and music producer David Darling about his latest book A Perfect Harmony: Music, Mathematics and Science. He tells us how the oldest pitched musical instrument found so far is thought to be more than 40,000 years old, the role music has played in the evolution of human culture, and what the impact AI-generated music may have on the work of human musicians and composers in the near future. ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult
Why does truth no longer seem to matter? In this episode, we explore the philosophical and psychological roots of today's crisis of reality. Drawing on Jean Baudrillard's theory of hyperreality and Carl Gustav Jung's concept of the Shadow, I unravel how modern society's obsession with materialism, the proliferation of simulations, and the repression of symbolic, non-material dimensions of human experience have led to the current breakdown of truth. We will examine how Baudrillard's insights reveal a world where images no longer reflect reality but replace it entirely, and how Jung's warning about the dangers of ignoring the unconscious has manifested in distorted, collective forms. Together, these perspectives illuminate why facts are increasingly dismissed in favour of emotionally compelling narratives. Finally, I propose a path forward: a reintegration of critical thinking and symbolic imagination as essential tools for restoring our relationship with reality and cultivating a culture where truth matters once again. Join me as we delve into the death of the real — and how we might yet reclaim it.CONNECT & SUPPORT
Send us a textShort Summary: A detailed examination of shamanism with anthropologist Manvir Singh, blending evolutionary theory and vivid storytelling.About the guest: Manvir Singh, PhD is an anthropologist at the University of California, Davis. His new book, "Shamanism: The Timeless Religion," comes out on May 25, 2025.Note: Podcast episodes are fully available to paid subscribers on the M&M Substack and everyone on YouTube. Partial versions are available elsewhere. Full transcript and other information on Substack.Episode Summary: Dr. Manvir Singh discusses shamanism's role as a universal human practice, exploring its roots in cultural evolution, cognitive tendencies, and persistence across history and modern society. They discuss how shamans use altered states to address uncertainty—like healing or divination—while examining shamanism's interplay with centralized religion, its psychological benefits, and parallels in today's world, from tech gurus to medical placebos.Key Takeaways:Shamanism is a widespread cultural practice involving specialists who enter altered states to engage with unseen forces, often for healing or managing uncertainty. It's not an archaic precursor to modern religion but a recurring expression of spiritual beliefs & practices, competing with other forms.Techniques vary widely—dance, music, psychedelics—but only about half of shamans historically used psychoactive substances.Modern parallels include tech CEOs and money managers who project exceptionalism to influence others, echoing shamanic charisma without trance.Open-label placebos (where patients know it's fake) still work, suggesting rituals alone can trigger healing, much like shamanic practices.Singh sees shamanism as a cognitive technology, not inherently good or bad, shaping how we cope with chaos across cultures and time.Related episode:M&M #86: Shamanism, Psychedelics, Social Behavior, Religion & Evolution of Human Culture | Michael Winkelman*Not medical advice.Support the showAll episodes, show notes, transcripts, etc. at the M&M Substack Affiliates: Lumen device to optimize your metabolism for weight loss or athletic performance. This week on Sinica, I chat with David Zweig, a veteran China scholar who is Professor Emeritus from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. We discuss Davis'd latest book, The War for Chinese Talent in America, which looks at Chinese efforts to harness the intellectual firepower of Chinese scientists and engineers who studied abroad, especially in the United States, and bring them — or at least their knowledge —back to China. David's book takes a balanced look at both the very real problems generated by Chinese policies as well as the overreaction by the U.S. Department of Justice in the form of the infamous China Initiative. 3:40 – Why got David interested on this particular topic 7:07 – The diaspora option12:09 – The Thousand Talents Program/Plan18:28 – How the talent programs operate23:48 – Motivations for Chinese to participate in the talent programs, how geopolitics now impacts these decisions, and what the effect of the China Initiative has been on collaboration 36:29 – The China Initiative's climate of fear and the concern for racial profiling 49:40 – The extent of the validity of U.S. security concerns57:24 – David's suggestions for balancing national security interests and open scientific exchange Paying It Forward: Dan Lynch and his book, China's Futures: PRC Elites Debate Economics, Politics, and Foreign PolicyRecommendations:David: It's a Wonderful World — The Louis Armstrong Musical in New YorkKaiser: The Invention of Yesterday: A 50,000-Year History of Human Culture, Conflict, and Connection by Tamim Ansary, especially the audiobook read by the authorSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In episode 40 of the Anthrozoology Podcast we continue our conversation with, Dr. Irina Frazin discusses the challenges faced by NGOs in Romania, including difficulties in building trust and networks, and the complexities of legal obligations for cat microchipping and the issue of ear tipping for sterilised cats. Irina shares her experience with a severely injured cat who transforms from a non-social cat to a loving companion. She also addresses the problem of community cat abandonment and the need for better support networks for companion animal guardians. The conversation touches on the historical association of cats with the feminine and the evolution of the "crazy cat lady" trope. Please subscribe to get notified about our next podcast! In episode 39 of the Anthrozoology Podcast we join Dr. Irina Frazin, for part one of two on a discussion on Romanian Feline Lives. Irina is a researcher at the Institute of Social and Economic Research, who discusses her journey from classical studies to anthrozoology, sparked by adopting her cat Bubus 15 years ago. Irina highlights the challenges of translating human-animal studies terminology into Romanian and the success of the Anthrozoology Symposium, which initially attracted more international than local participants. Irina also details her efforts to establish an anthrozoology course at the University of Iasi, despite several challenges, and emphasises the importance of fostering programs for cats in Romanian shelters. Cub Kuker Supernatural Podcast EP441 In Chapter 10 of the Hermetica, Atum is revered as the primordial creator deity, embodying the essence from which the entire universe emanates. To co-create with Atum is to acknowledge and connect deeply with this divine source within oneself and within the cosmic order. This ancient Egyptian concept invites individuals to align their intentions and actions with the fundamental principles of Ma'at, which encompass truth, justice, and cosmic balance. By living in harmony with these principles, individuals participate actively in the ongoing process of creation, echoing Atum's role as the sustainer and originator of life. Co-creation with Atum also entails embracing a stewardship role over creation, akin to Atum's cosmic stewardship. This responsibility calls for the wise and conscientious use of one's creative potential and resources to nurture and enhance life on Earth. It emphasizes not only individual creativity but also collective efforts to preserve the natural world and promote the well-being of all living beings. Central to co-creation with Atum is the manifestation of divine qualities in daily life. Wisdom, creativity, compassion, and reverence for life are virtues that align with Atum's attributes and contribute positively to the cosmic order. By embodying these qualities, individuals honor the divine presence in all aspects of existence, fostering a deeper spiritual connection with Atum and the broader universe. Honoring Atum involves cultivating a profound reverence for the divine within and around oneself. This reverence is expressed through gratitude for the gifts of creation and a commitment to spiritual growth. By seeking knowledge and engaging in spiritual practices that deepen understanding of the divine, individuals strengthen their role as co-creators with Atum, actively contributing to the ongoing evolution and harmony of the cosmos as envisioned in the Hermetica and ancient Egyptian teachings. This episode is brought to you by Comrad Socks, Legacy, and LMNT. What is the purpose of life? Does science have any claim to this question? For generations, many have concluded that evolution implies there is no overarching purpose to our existence. Life has no fundamental meaning. We are merely the accumulation of tens of thousands of intricate molecular accidents. Some scientists take this logic one step further: “The fact of evolution is … inherently atheistic… It goes against the notion that there is a God.” But is this true? By integrating emerging principles from a variety of scientific disciplines—ranging from evolutionary biology to psychology—Yale Professor Samuel Wilkinson provides a framework of evolution that implies not only that there is an overarching purpose to our existence, but what this purpose is. Closely related to purpose is meaning. What is the meaning of life? Based on the scientific data, it would seem that one such meaning is to develop deep and abiding relationships. At least that's what most people report are the most meaningful aspects of their lives. And our relationships that are most meaningful are those with our families, those with whom we share our genes. This is a function of our evolution. It is how we were created. Follow Chase @chase_chewning ----- In this episode we discuss... From the plains of ancient empires to the controversies of modern statues, our episode reveals the deep imprints left by these noble creatures. Expect to uncover how their roles extended beyond agriculture and warfare, touching on darker chapters of human history like the slave trade, and how their symbolism has evolved in today's competitive sports arenas and contentious public memorials. Tune in for a riveting discussion on the cultural nuances of our dietary choices, especially the polarizing topic of horse meat consumption. Joy unveils the historical roots of food taboos, dissecting how past practices, such as those during shackle slavery, still ripple into present-day biases. We don't shy away from the ethical dilemmas surrounding the treatment of animals as sentient beings, challenging deeply ingrained anthropocentric views. We'll also scrutinize the effectiveness of breed-specific dog legislation, questioning the supposed link between breed and aggression, and consider how our kinship bonds with animals reflect and inform human behavior. Our journey doesn't end there; we'll also contemplate the vast environmental footprint of industrial farming and the intricate dynamics of our domestication endeavors. From the ethics of animal rights movements to the crucial role of biodiversity, our conversation with Joy is a thought-provoking examination of the threads connecting us to the animal kingdom. We'll even touch upon our relationship with Neanderthals, and consider how our perception of human evolution informs our interactions with animals today. Prepare to reevaluate your stance on our fly, finned, and four-legged friends, and how they fit into the complex tapestry of modern society. Support the showCrew:Host: C. Humanity is straddling unprecedented, threshold times. This situational crisis is more than climate change. It's a whole system change. Yet, despite the extreme nature of our situation, we're also living in a moment of immense possibility. We live in an immense sea of a living universe within a domain of aliveness with new kinds of potentials that are going to emerge. Today's guest is very meaningful to me and probably requires no introduction. Dr. Heather Heying is the reason I know about detransitioners and am doing half the things I'm doing. An evolutionary biologist and animal behaviorist, world traveler, podcast co-host, writer, mentor to many, mother of two, agreeable contrarian, and all-around interesting person, Dr. Heying can easily be considered one of the greatest thinkers of our time.It was tough to narrow down what to focus on in a conversation with someone so influential, so I selected a few of the recurring themes that form the foundational principles for much of her work. We discuss the concepts of culture and consciousness, and how they shape our understandings of progress and tradition, liberalism and conservatism. We delve into the metaphorical idea of Chesterton's fence, which represents the importance of understanding the purpose and value of something before discarding it. And we examine several “Chesterton's fences” in modern life that have been impacted by what Heather often calls “hyper-novelty.” What do we lose when we stop sitting around a campfire together, telling stories and making music?Heather Heying is an evolutionary biologist who earned her PhD in Biology from the University of Michigan, has been a visiting Fellow at Princeton University, and was a tenured professor at The Evergreen State College. She has been invited to speak about science, higher ed, the evolution of sex and consciousness, and the culture wars, in venues as varied as the U.S. Department of Justice, the Krishnamurti Institute, Joe Rogan, and Oxford University. Her first book, Antipode, is based on her life in Madagascar while studying the sex lives of poison frogs. Her second book, co-authored with husband Bret Weinstein, is A Hunter-Gatherer's Guide to the 21st Century: Evolution and the Challenges of Modern Life. A New York Times best-seller, the book provides an evolutionary toolkit for living a good and honorable life as a modern ape. She also writes Natural Selections on Substack, the Field Notes column for County Highway, and co-hosts with Bret a popular weekly livestream on the DarkHorse podcast.Natural Selections blogDarkHorse PodcastX @HeatherEHeyingHeather's books are available in my bookshop or via the embedded Amazon affiliate links. From his personal relationships with the organizations we know as Forests (where Collaboration AND Competition thrive), Jo Pang helps good health flourish in human orgs, specifically those focused on "social good." The work of Culture Wise, Jo's enterprise, supports organizations who envision a more compassionate and just world, to develop capacity for leadership in ways that can turn around society's dominant and colonizing modes. This work can take groups out of doors in activity at once super-purposeful and playful. When Earthworms host Jean Ponzi joined one of these experiences, she felt wake-up-genuinely inspired by Jo's approach to "consulting and facilitating" - and wanted to share Jo's perspective with you. Around the grounds of Kindred Forest, the nature retreat Jo Pang and family are cultivating (near Bourbon, MO, about an hour from St. Louis), individuals and groups can experience Forest Bathing, with Jo as your certified Forest Therapy Guide. With a Doctorate in Strategic Management in the works from University of Missouri St. Louis, look for lively leadership to continue to evolve from among the circles of trees and humans who inspire and teach Jo Pang. From TEDx Gateway Arch, hear Jo Pang share How Mindfulness Transforms Us THANKS to Andy Heaslet for audio-engineering this edition of Earthworms, and to Jon Valley, KDHX production Wiz Related Earthworms Conversations: In the Company of Trees with Andrea Sarubbi Fareshteh (Jan. 2019)

In addition, he is an adjunct scientist at the Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes. His main research triangulates what (if anything) makes human cognition unique - as well as why (and relatedly, when this happened and how often). In particular, he uses various methods and pathways to study the factors and the prehistorical beginnings that enabled the typical modern human "variant of culture": cumulative culture of know-how. In this episode, we talk about ape culture. We start by defining it, and discuss if it is similar or different to human culture. We talk about studies done in captivity versus the ones done in the wild. We discuss the differences between ape culture and human culture, and focus on supra-individual know-how. We discuss what we can learn from these questions. We talk about the “similarity hypothesis", and why is it important to study unenculturated and untrained apes. We discuss the work of Cecilia Heyes and its potential implications for the study of culture. We talk about tasks commonly used to study ape social learning, and what we can learn from them. Finally, we discuss if we know where the differences in the cultures between humans and apes come from. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, OLAF ALEX, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, JOHN CONNORS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, MIKKEL STORMYR, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, ADANER USMANI, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, DANIEL FRIEDMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ANTON ERIKSSON, CHARLES MOREY, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. How do good people create systems of oppression? What is Health? What is unHealth? And how do we move from the latter to the former in ways that mean good people create systems of co-creation, inter-being and connection? This week, we explore all these questions with Sophy Banks, Founder and Lead Facilitator of Healthy Human Culture. This week's guest is a remarkable woman who was one of the shining lights amongst those who came to teach us at Schumacher college, before the pandemicSophy Banks has been an engineer, a footballer, and a therapist. She was deeply involved in the Transition movement from its inception, finding ways to balance inner and outer work, to keep heart-focused in a world where a lot of outward-focused action can so easily lead to burnout. I met Sophy as she was moving away from that role, moving into Inner Transition as a new movement and also working deeply with Grief Tending workshops inspired by her time with Sobonfu and Patrice Malidoma Some from Burkino Faso. That was back in 2017 and clearly the world has moved on since then and Sophy has moved with it. She is now Founder and Lead Facilitator of the Healthy Human Culture movement where she brings together the deep learning and experience of the past decades in a system of online learning journeys and other workshops which offers a vision for a world in which societies, communities, workplaces, families and individuals can thrive. It's a journey of healing and understanding and exploration and it feels absolutely core to where we are going, could go, need to go as people and as a culture. It is always an honour, a delight, and a deeply thought-provoking, moving experience to talk with and learn from Sophy. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. This week we are exploring how we do things, rather than what we do. We are diving into the concept of 'healthy human cultures' and how to build them. What would it mean if, in the organisations and movements we're part of, we set out to create the best conditions for a shared culture in which we thrive? Luckily we have two great people to help us unpick this one. Leila Hoballah is an organisation designer, a community builder, a facilitator and a coach, co-founder of makesense.org, one of the leaders of Boundless Roots, a collective action-inquiry investigating the enabling condition for radical changes in ways of living. She is also part of The Week. Sophy Banks was one of the architects of the Transition movement, founder of Transition training, who does a lot of work around grief tending, and exploring Healthy Human Culture, the culmination of her life's journey so far, which you can read more about here. Impossible to think of two better people to have this conversation with. Enjoy, and as always, do let me know what you think.
A new MP3 sermon from Grace Baptist Church - Truth with Grace is now available on SermonAudio with the following details: Title: Human Culture (Part 2) Subtitle: God Behind the Scenes Speaker: Pierre Rosa Broadcaster: Grace Baptist Church - Truth with Grace Event: Radio Broadcast Date: 7/21/2023 Bible: Esther 2:12-23 Length: 26 min.
If you've been a human for any length of time you know we like to see ourselves in the extremes. We're either the best thing since sliced bread and God is lucky to have us on His side - or we -rightly- see the flaws in our character and desires and understand how truly broken we are. From that perspective, we can range from total amazement to that God would save us and use us for His glory, to doubt even God could us someone so messed up.-But the story of Esther reminds us that God accomplishes His will in spite of our flaws and not because of them. He turns our disasters into examples of His grace. That should give us all hope.
The story of Esther worried the early church and even some more recent theologians. How could a book of the Bible not mention God by name-- And also, how can a book of the Bible - God's holy Word - contain such spicy content and negative examples----God inspired this record of real events, and He also inspired the author to write it just as he did to remind us that a silent God is not an absent God. And more importantly, God is faithful at all times, even when we can't see the final outcome. Those fact make life today worth living too.

Nick talks to anthropologist Dr. Michael Winkelman, who was a professor at Arizona State University for many years, where he studied topics related to shamanism as practiced by early hunter gatherer societies, and other topics related to human cultural evolution. He is now retired and conducts independent research from Brazil, where he now lives. They discuss: what shamanism is & the core features of shamanic ritual practices across historical hunter gatherer cultures; how the various ritual practices associated with shamanism were used by forager societies (e.g. symbolism, group dance and drumming) & the use of psychedelics; evolution of shamanism & religion from prehistoric times to the present; role religion and spiritual practices have played in human evolution; how human culture is akin to virtual reality & how human ritual practices help sculpt the narratives that form within human cultures that regulate human behavior; future of religion & spirituality in the modern age & whether the use of psychedelics as entheogenic substances might have a role to play in that.Support M&M:Sign up for the weekly Mind & Matter newsletter[https://mindandmatter.substack.com/?sort=top]The Amino Co., shop science-back amino acids supplements. The trickster deity (or archetype) is instrumental in the progress of most cultures and essential for inner transformation. We get acquainted with the primordial force of alchemical change, including his aspects of Hermes, the Coyote, Loki, Set, Prometheus, and Tezcatlipoca. Is the Trickster just Jung's Shadow or an alien shitposter? How do we harness this archetype's psychic gifts and avoid its cosmic pranks? You'll find out, and for good measure, we'll include some of HP Lovecraft's dark jokes as a bonus.Astral Guest – Jeffrey Lang, author of The Trickster Gods and Their Influence on the Development of Human Culture. This is a partial show.
