Our guest today is a solo artist, producer, Palo Santo Music Group co-founder in Dallas, TX, and its indie music godfather. He is one Salim Nourallah. You may remember Salim as our guest in Episode 40 and our discussion about one of the most consequential records in our lifetime and beyond, The White Album. As a solo artist, Nourallah has long mined the terrain between catchy and devastating. Rolling Stone called him “a singer-songwriter who can stop time.” As a producer and owner of Pleasantry Lane in Dallas, Nourallah has worked notably with the Old 97's, Rhett Miller, the Deathray Davies, and the Damnwells. His work on either side of the sound booth has won an armful of Dallas Observer music awards and proven that some musicians actually do get better with age.Our conversation today will focus on British singer/songwriter Stephen Duffy and his second solo offering from 1995 titled “Duffy” which was originally released on Indolent Records. Some may know Stephen Duffy as a founding member, vocalist and bassist of Duran Duran and later the front man for the folk rock outfit The Lilac Time. Please, enjoy episode #100!

This week's episode features American singer-songwriter, musician, and recording artist Travis Shallow. I first met Travis many years ago when we were both getting our start in the music scene in downtown Wilmington, NC. In addition to his stellar songwriting, the great thing about Travis is he's a natural storyteller. We chat a little bit about the early days, including his time writing and collaborating with fellow songwriters Ron Etheridge & Richard Welsh for their project A Few Good Liars, but we also dig into the pitfalls and challenges of staying creative while overcoming resistance as a songwriter. Travis is best known for his prolific solo career, with his most recent single, "Let It Pass", released on Cavity Search Records on June 26th, 2020. Shallow released his debut self-titled solo album, Travis Shallow, in 2016. Recorded at Tweed Recording Studio in Oxford, MS and engineered by Andrew Ratcliffe whose discography includes Will Hoge, The Damnwells, and American Aquarium. This solo album highlighted his songwriting and lyrical prowess. Shallow's solo album has a maturity to it that catapulted him into a new light. After the release of his self-titled album in March '16, Shallow landed himself national opening spots with legend Gregg Allman, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real, The Marcus King Band, Jerry Joseph, Todd Snider, and fellow native North Carolina band, American Aquarium. Our segment two quotes to ponder as you're tuning in are below: “If it ain't meant to last, gotta let it pass” - Travis Shallow "Being a songwriter is like being a nun, you're married to a mystery" - Leonard Cohen Travis' segment three shares are: Painted Buffalo Traveling Studio - The Painted Buffalo Traveling Studio's mission is to enhance the quality of life for members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their community by providing alternative tools in art and art making. With the use of community based art practices and Art Therapy methods Painted Buffalo Traveling Studio is dedicated to getting veterans outside, art supplies in hand telling their stories. Alex selected 5 favorites from his catalog, and Dustin selected 5 of his favorites to round out the 10 songs. There are some very poignant moments in the conversation, as a lot of ground is covered over the course of the hour plus discussion. Join us for a dialogue about music, racism in America, and what an artist can do with their platform, among other things. If you enjoyed the songs featured in this episode, you can find the Spotify playlist under Alex Dezen - My Personal Mixtape.

Ted has spent the past eight years negotiating music, footage, and photo licenses for use in dozens of Oscar-winning documentaries and original programming at HBO. After thirty days on the road in Mississippi I’m happy to say I’m home and back in the studio! To help celebrate our 75th episode I sat down with Andrew Ratcliffe of Tweed Recording in Oxford, MS. Andrew has been producing and engineering bands for over twenty years and has carved out an incredible career in an area rich in musical history and heritage. His list of clients includes The Black Crowes, The Damnwells, Pokey LaFarge, Jimbo Mathus, Will Sexton, and the North Mississippi All-Stars. However, the real heart of Tweed studios lies in the incredible microphone collection Andrew has amassed, particularly the selection from Columbia studios. Thanks for tuning-in this week, and stay safe out there!

Ah, the May long weekend is upon us at last. The weather’s ruining the party a bit, but hey, at least it’s not snow! We’ve got some great tunes to start the summer off right. First up some great new music before settling in to preview a couple of exciting shows this week, as well as some upcoming house concerts, real and imaginary. To end off the show, a tribute to a legendary cornerstone of the Canadian folk/roots community. Why? Because.

It’s our last show of the year, and the official release of the annual compilations. It was another jam-packed year of great music, so we couldn’t fit it into our usual 1.5 hour time slot, so we’re doubling that and going a full 3 hours!

This one felt like such a busy show, yet we only managed to play 4 artists in 2 hours; I don’t think we’ve ever done that before! We had to pay tribute to the late, great John Bottomley, who left us this week, but left behind a lot of great music. RIP. We look forward to my trip to finally see the Damnwells live, and we were joined in-studio by Taylor Ashton of hot up-and-coming roots band Fish & Bird to chat about their great new record and upcoming shows.

This past weekend’s trip down south to see the Damnwells and take in Record Store Day was pretty amazing, and we can’t help but relive it by listening to some live recordings and pulling out the new vinyl we bought on Record Store Day. Lots of good stuff to behold. Also, we’ve got a whole whack of great new music.

This week a chat with Mae Moore, who is about to return to Winnipeg for the first time in a long time. Also returning is our pal Jim Bryson, and we’re excited about that, and can’t go without a few songs. We’ve got new music (new Damnwells!), classics, requests, and more!

Even though it’s still a couple months away, it seems like Christmas, because we got a heaping helping of new music in the mail this week, including a box of great new stuff from one of Canada’s best labels, Busted Flat Records. These add to an already impressive list of great new releases this year, but we all know that the releases go into hibernation this time of year. With that in mind, we tried to look at what might be the best release of 2010… and then realized that it was slightly premature. We did, however, manage to look at some great concerts, past and present.

The three minds that make up the Steel Belted team don't always agree (obviously), but if there's one thing we agree on, it's that The Damnwells are one of the greatest bands on Earth. Tonight, a very special treat, as we chat live with Alex Dezen, the leader of that amazing band.

This time it's KK and the Mudge running the show as T-Bar is off visiting his probation officer or something. We had a special guest on air as KK's neice Ryann is celebrating a birthday.
KK and the T-Bar take the reins this week as the Mudge gets stuck at work. Don't worry, Mudge calls in near the end to straighten those kids out, but for the most part, they do a decent job of playing good tunes.
Hey, hey, the gang's all here... well, for 2/3 of the show anyway. For the last half hour we ducked out to go to the Haiti relief fundraiser at WECC, but we left a present behind. Jeff came in on Monday to record an AMAZING live set with The Wooden Sky featuring conversation and the entire band playing live, in-studio!

Summertime's a great time to relax and just listen to some great music, and that's what we did for the most part today. Sure, we talked a bit about the upcoming Trout Forest Music Festival, and a bit about the glory of The Jayhawks, but other than that, it was good music and good times.

A special episode featuring an interview with Texas singer/songwriter Slaid Cleaves, who makes his long-awaited return to Winnipeg in a little over a week. And, as usual, your Roots Rock Weirdos play some great tunes and talk a whole lot.
Another Valentines Day has come and gone, and I've got some sucking up to do, so a set of lovey dovey tunes to melt her heart. Some new & noteable songs from here and elsewhere followed. The bulk of the show was devoted to the first anniversary of the death of one of the greatest songwriters of all time, Willie P Bennett. Willie is one of the guiding lights of this show, so it's our duty to pay him some respect and play some of his songs as done by him and others, and hear some words from those most inspired by him.
