In early March, The Crafty Pint headed to Hobart for the 38th Chartered Institute of Brewers and Distillers Asia Pacific Convention. The event brings together brewers, distillers and suppliers from all over the globe for several days of technical presentations and networking with the aim of improving standards and education for technical brewers and distillers. To provide a behind-the-scenes slice of what CIBD is all about, we recorded three distinct, shorter-than-usual podcast interviews for this episode.First up, you'll hear Will and Craig chat to CIBD CEO Tom Shelston and president Dr Megan Sheehy PhD about the organisation's purpose, history and why there's now a C in front of IBD. Next up is Carlos Ruiz, chief sales officer at HVG, a major German hop grower and supplier. Against the backdrop of the craft lager renaissance, we wanted to pick his brains about the growing interest from craft brewers in traditional German hops as well as his impressive journey in the Bavarian beer industry, one that starts in Venezuela. Finally, we look more locally and talk to Tim Bishop, co-founder and head brewer at Easy Tiger, about his experience at CIBD and his brewery's story. Based on Tassie's northeast coast, the brewery is as tiny as it is unique, complete with a café, multiple restaurants and a cinema. Ahead of those chats, James and Will cover the industry's recent news, including Last Man Standing's takeover of the former home of Newstead, and Nail Brewing's impending 25th anniversary. We're excited to announce that Pint of Origin is return for a thirteenth time – touching down in Melbourne from May 8 to 19, and to bring back Bintani's Sam Bethune with more ways breweries can get the most out of their ingredients. We're also eager to see more submissions for the Bluestone Yeast Brewery of the Month and our Have You Done A Rallings? campaign celebrating the country's good beer citizens.Start of segments: 14:26 – Tom Shelston & Dr Megan Sheehy 27:37 – Bintani Brewery Booster 31:29 – Carlos Ruiz 54: 55 – Tim BishopRelevant links: CIBD Hobart HVG Easy Tiger Last Man Standing Take Over Newstead Tough As Nail Pint of Origin 2025 Bintani Nominate a good beer citizen Nominate a Bluestone Yeast Brewery of the MonthTo find out more about supporting the show or otherwise partnering with The Crafty Pint, contact craig@craftypint.com.

Welcome back to the Magician On Duty Journey Series! On this edition we welcome Adomani (@adomani) Magician On Duty is thrilled to welcome Adomani to our Journey Series, a Berlin-born artist whose journey into electronic music began at an early age. Immersed in the city's vibrant soundscape, Adomani discovered his love for downtempo at the legendary 'Salon' floor of the former Rummels Bucht club—a place he fondly refers to as his “living room.” Adomani's sound is a unique exploration of emotional depth and energetic vibrancy. Constantly searching for a rounded, empathetic tone, he has spent the last few years experimenting with slower tempos while seamlessly infusing them with dynamic energy. This evolving sound has resonated with audiences, leading to standout performances at renowned venues and festivals, including Bucht der Träumer alongside Ferky and KaterBlau in Berlin. Beyond his DJ sets, Adomani is deeply involved in Berlin's creative community. As the co-founder of the Berlin-based collective Hauptgang, he plays a pivotal role in shaping the visual concepts, decoration, and organization of their events. His artistic vision extends to stage design, where he has contributed two years in a row to the immersive aesthetics of Bucht der Träumer. Adomani's guest mixes for collectives such as Easy Tiger and Sumpfkrüge reflect his constant return to the roots of his musical journey. His newest journey for Magician On Duty is a heartfelt homage to the tracks that sparked his passion for electronic music. While his artistic path has led him to explore various genres, this set is a love letter to his beginnings—a curated selection of cherished tracks he has always dreamed of playing in a set. Prepare for an intimate and emotional journey as Adomani takes you back to where it all started. Easy Tiger is a local Austin bakery/pub and very popular with locals - but not with the workers! Proof of that came when the Department of Labor contacted the 7th Street location and informed the bakery that they had received a tip (hahaha and not sorry) that the restaurant was in violation employment laws around tipping. Tips are for front of house staff only, servers and bartenders, tips are not to be shared among all staff. The restaurant had been collecting all tips and splitting the money among the staff. Easy Tiger apologized and even paid the servers and bartenders what they were owed without docking the dishwashers and cleaners who had previously received a portion of the tips. What is tipping culture? Where does it come from and can we send it back? Tipflation has reached new heights of weirdness when you are asked to tip your landlord. For all the tech-geeks out there, here's the unedited AI recap of this episode :) In this riveting episode of "Apologies Accepted," hosts Theo and Juliette navigate the murky waters of identity politics and public apologies. Opening with a lively discussion on the generation-defining term 'Zoomers,' the hosts delve into the cultural and societal implications this shift carries. Theo candidly shares his perspective, sparking an engaging debate that keeps listeners enthralled. Transitioning from identity politics, Theo and Juliette turn their insightful lens towards an issue plaguing a local Austin restaurant, Easy Tiger. The popular eatery had recently been in the spotlight for mishandling employee tips, leading them to issue a public apology. The hosts dissect the incident, offering keen analysis of the concept of public apologies, their impact, and their significance in today's society. This episode presents a unique blend of enlightening discussions and lighthearted banter, making it a must-listen for those interested in societal shifts, public apologies, or anyone in search of stimulating dialogue. Digging deeper into tipping culture controversies, the hosts explore historical and emerging trends in gratuity practices. They examine the transformation from voluntary to mandatory tipping and its economic impact on service industry workers. The hosts also reflect on the rise in tipping generosity brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Addressing recent tipping controversies like the Easy Tiger incident, the conversation drifts towards the changes in tipping customs when businesses face management turmoil and escalating costs. They also touch upon the rising annoyance of ubiquitous tipping requests in fast food chains, self-checkout screens, and the unspoken questions about where these tips end up. Amidst all these, the podcast also sheds light on the concept of 'tipflation,' deciphering how tipping percentages have evolved over time. The hosts share their personal experiences related to tipping, provoking a thought-provoking introspection into the state of service labor and the evolving pressures on consumers in the ever-changing domain of American tipping culture.

Book a free demo with Explorex here: https://share.hsforms.com/1wdxFNOxpQZ29F9MpD48e7Acyk5y Explorex's website: https://explorex.co/ Mainak Sarkar and Pritam Khan started Eatables in 2016 while they were studying at IIT Kharagpur. This startup was their answer to a problem they had discovered while visiting restaurants in Kolkata, wherein many of the restaurant menus that they'd discover online while on campus at IIT Kharagpur were inaccurate and contained incorrect prices or items that were no longer available when they actually travelled to Kolkata. When Mainak Sarkar and Pritam Khan asked restaurants why this was happening, they were told that it would often take a week or two for restaurants to actually update their menus on Zomato. Mainak and Pritam saw this as an opportunity to build a platform which would enable restaurants to quickly and easily update their menus online. Sadly, their platform didn't see widespread adoption, with only 250 restaurants signing up and 10,000 lifetime downloads overall. They had hoped that if they relocated Eatables to Bengaluru, it would see more adoption, so Mainak dropped out of IIT Kharagpur in 2017 and shifted to Bengaluru. However, only 100 restaurants signed up. Mainak Sarkar and Pritam Khan were devastated. Their startup was failing. Towards the end of 2018, Mainak Sarkar and Pritam Khan decided that offering an app for restaurants to keep their online menus up-to-date wasn't working, and so they pivoted to providing restaurants with digital menus that their customers could scan with QR codes. However, in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic hit and stopped Eatable in its tracks. Mainak Sarkar and Pritam Khan had basically been bootstrapping Eatable up until this point, having only raised a small FFF round. However, when the pandemic hit, Mainak asked his mentor for ₹15 lakh and was able to keep the startup alive even though all of Bengaluru's restaurants were shut. In 2020, Mainak and Pritam applied for Y Combinator for the third time. Their initial attempts had failed because they struggled to get through the interview round due to nerves. However, by their third attempt, they were able to crack the Y Combinator interview and got to be a part of YC's first remote cohort. Their pitch involved Mainak explaining how Eatable would build an ecosystem for restaurants, solving all of their problems with a single platform. This impressed the team at Y Combinator, and eventually Eatable was able to raise $150,000 from YC. Then, in August of 2020 Explorex raised an $850,000 seed round, bringing their total fundraise to $1M at the end of 2020. In 2021 when restaurants began opening back up again, Mainak and Pritam onboard three breweries in Bengaluru for their MVP, which consisted of an ordering and order management system. Tony Diaz spotlights the upcoming event “Encuentro: The Native American Roots of Texas Mexican Food.” Several food scholars explore the culinary scene with chefs and writers, and sometimes, both! Victoria Elizondo is chef owner of Cochinita Co. in Houston where she insists that fresh and preferably local ingredients are key to her vibrant and flavorful Mexican food. At her restaurant in the Greater East End, Cochinita co., she usually has sever al dishes featuring the ancient food that is native to Texas for thousands of years: nopalitos. When she was 12, Elizondo left her native Nuevo Leon, south of the Texas Mexican border, with her mother to move to the United States, where she became a DACA recipient. Following in her mother's footsteps, she got her first job at 16 as a restaurant hostess. During her career she has worked at top Houston restaurants like State of Grace, Pax Americana and Xochi. In 2016 she started her own business venture, Cochinita Co., initially a food truck concept that pivoted to a pop up and catering model, now a small restaurant that is receiving high honors. The Houston Chronicle named Cochinita Co. one of the top 25 Best Restaurants of 2022. This year, Elizondo is nominated for the prestigious national Emerging Chef James Beard Award. Chef Joseph Gomez, is honoring his roots through his new food truck Con Todo, focusing on comida frontera (Spanish for “border town food”). The Rio Grande Valley native debuted the truck in 2021 at Celis Brewery's new beer garden in North Austin. Gomez who's worked at Austin restaurants such as Be More Pacific, Tha i Kun, She's Not Here, and Easy Tiger sees the truck as showcasing the foods and stories of the Rio Grande Valley and his family. It's through the menu that he wants to jump start “a long conversation about Mexican food in south Texas,” and what it truly is. Eater named Con Todo one of America's 15 best new restaurants of 2022. Lilliana Patricia Saldaña is an Associate Professor of Mexican American Studies (MAS) at UTSA and is co-director of the UTSA MAS Teachers' Academy. Her activist scholarship draws from Chicana/x studies, decolonial and anti-colonial studies, Indigenous epistemologies, and Chicana/Latina feminisms to investigate teacher identity and consciousness, and decolonial practices in schools and community spaces. She's published in nationally recognized journals, including Latinos & Education, Decolonization: Indigeneity, Education & Society, and Association of Mexican American Educators Journal, and has published in various edited volumes. When she's not teaching or researching, she's learning about Mexican and Indigenous foodways, facilitating gastronomy workshops, and tending to her kitchen garden. Adán Medrano is a Chef, Food Writer and Filmmaker. Author of “Truly Texas Mexican: A Native Culinary Heritage In Recipes” – Book Of The Year Finalist by Foreword Reviews. His most recent book, Don't Count the Tortillas – The Art of Texas Mexican Cooking, is reviewed and listed by “Spruce Eats” in “The 8 Best Mexican cookbooks to read in 2021.” Both history/cookbooks are academically peer-reviewed and published by Texas Tech University Press. Adán Medrano is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. His professional work in restaurant kitchens includes fine dining at “Restaurant Ten Bogaerde” in Belgium, and volunteering as the Chef of Houston's Casa Juan Diego, a shelter for homeless persons. Adán is also an award-winning filmmaker and holds a Master of Arts degree in Radio, Television and Film from the University of Texas at Austin. In 1976 he founded the San Antonio CineFestival, the first and now longest-running Latino film festival in the USA. His recent documentary feature film, Truly Texas Mexican, won “Best Documentary” at the New York Independent Cinema Awards.

But hey, his hot knives are cool, and that's enough for Kitty Pryde to almost kiss him with her lips in the laboratory of Black Air's top-secret base for aliens and general weirdness. Plus! Amanda smooches Kurt and everybody hates Rory who hates Spoor.
