In this podcast episode, we take a closer look at each deal to see what stands out and if they make sense both in the short-term and long-term. What makes Curry's contract unique due to his age? How much flexibility to the Clippers gain with the Zubac deal? Is McConnell too old to get the type of deal he did? Recorded remotely on 4th September 2020, Gem chats to photographer David Brandon Geeting, a photographer renown for his disruptive approach to still life and visual aesthetics. Masterfully playing with ideas of taste, worth, reality and truth, David challenges our expectations of photography, especially those within the commercial and editorial space. David's 2019 monograph Neighbourhood Stroll is a collection of photographs taken outside in his neighbourhood of Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Void of humans, the work dissects what they’ve left behind, and feels more post-apocalyptic than it does present-day. His work has been published in two other monographs including Infinite Power (2015), a whimsical compilation of imagery that he describes as ‘a collection of nothing’, and 2016’s S.K.N.P (South Korean Nature Photography), which sees him investigating relationships between the natural and urban. In this Conversation, David shares his journey in the industry so far, from how he got started and discovered an interest in objects to how he protects his authorship while working commercially. We talk about the space between intention and intuition and how he navigates both external and personal pressure. We reflect upon his monograph Neighbourhood Stroll and how the work channels new ideas in the light of the events of 2020. David reflects upon the epic shifts of 2020 and how they have impacted how he wants to create work in the future.Follow David on Instagram @davidbrandongeeting on Instagram and visit dbg.nyc to see his work. Our final guest who shares the highlights of her past twelve months of reading is historian Catherine Arnold. I first interviewed Catherine about the second book in her London trilogy, which explores the darker aspects of the city’s past, Bedlam: London and its Mad. You can hear the interview here. (The first volume of the series, as yet unpodcasted, is Necropolis: London and its Dead.) More recently, we met to talk about her latest book, City of Sin: London and its Vices. You can listen to that here. Here are Catherine’s choices from her 2010 reading: Looking back at the books which I’ve enjoyed over the past year reveals that history, personal, national and social, has been much on my mind. I’m currently researching a book about London and crime, and to this end I’ve particularly enjoyed Newgate, London’s Prototype of Hell by Stephen Halliday, and Tyburn, London’s Fatal Tree (Alan Brooke and David Brandon), both from the History Press (Sutton). Gripping accounts of two of the darkest aspects of London life. As I have also …
A Word from Ms Chelly K: I am native Detroiter, my father Joseph Bell Norris, (or Geno, or Ditty some called him), worked at Motown and because of him I grew up around excellence like going over Marvin Gaye..s house or having different Temptations members come over, because he was there personal engineer and went on tour with them. I was five years old when I first started performing in Down town Detroit..s Kennedy Square, the Rita Bell show, bars that would let me and my three brothers in and out, after performances. I have had the privilege to perform great legends such as, the late great Rudy Robinson, late great Dr. Teddy Harris, and the late great Harold McKinney, and have shared the stage with Marcus Belgrave, Milton and Philip Hale, John Douglas, Ron Carter, Martha Reeves, Bill Meyer, Spider Web, Hubie Crawford, Raysee Biggs, Romona Collins, Sky Covington, Big John, Willie Jones of the Royal Jokers, and TP Coleman, Terry Thunder, Tonya Hudd, Cubie, Willie Wooten, Terry Wheeler, Altemese, Mike Jellick, The Matthew Twins, Ashaki, Ola Hemphill, Diva D, Terry T, and presently working with John Glover and the list goes on and on, especially down at Bert..s Marketplace where we have Jam sessions. I have opened for such great entertainers as Marlena Shaw, Marion Meadows, Temptations Review, The Spinners, and Background vocals for Luther Ingram, Melvin Van Peoples, and performed with great bands like Gordon Camp, the V.I.P..s with Jerry Moss, on the piano, and David Brandon on Drums, and John Bass on bass, and Jimmy Witherspoon, on sax, and Clarence Jackson, of whom I..m working with presently also as a featured vocalists. I want to work with as many talented people that will continue to encourage and educate, inspire, and help to make my dream come true, and that..s to be able to touch people internationally. Thanks in advance for so many comments, encouragement and pushes in the right directions.
