Judge Steven J. Hippler is an Idaho district judge who has served on the Fourth Judicial District bench since 2013. A Boise native, Hippler earned his undergraduate degree from Boise State University before graduating from the University of Utah College of Law in 1991, where he finished near the top of his class and was inducted into the Order of the Coif. Before becoming a judge, he spent more than two decades in private practice, eventually becoming a partner at Givens Pursley after previously working at Hall Farley Oberrecht & Blanton. His practice focused heavily on civil litigation, particularly medical malpractice, health care law, regulatory disputes and business litigation, representing doctors, hospitals and other medical providers. Then-Gov. Butch Otter appointed him to a newly created Fourth Judicial District judgeship in 2013, describing him at the time as an experienced and highly capable litigator. Hippler later handled both civil and felony criminal dockets, presided over Ada County's Mental Health Court and rose into an administrative leadership role within the Fourth Judicial District.Hippler became nationally known when the Bryan Kohberger case was transferred from Latah County to Ada County in 2024 and he took over from Judge John Judge. From the beginning, Hippler developed a reputation for running a tightly controlled courtroom, setting firm deadlines and making clear that he expected lawyers on both sides to be prepared and professional. He presided over the enormous volume of pretrial litigation involving the death penalty, expert witnesses, evidentiary disputes, discovery, media access and trial scheduling before Kohberger ultimately pleaded guilty in 2025. Hippler then accepted the plea and sentenced Kohberger to four consecutive life sentences without parole, plus additional punishment for burglary. He remains involved in Kohberger's subsequent attempt to undo those pleas, including establishing the procedural framework for the post-conviction challenge and a possible evidentiary hearing in 2027. His role in the case has made him one of the most visible judges in Idaho, but his background is notable because he did not come to the bench as a career prosecutor or criminal-defense attorney; much of his pre-judicial experience came from complex civil litigation, and colleagues have described his approach on the bench as methodical, demanding and decidedly resistant to surprises.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

What does this story want because this character is queer? That's the question at the heart of this special episode recorded for ProWritingAid's Write with Pride event.Too often, queer characters are present in a story without their queerness meaningfully shaping what they want, what they fear, what they risk or who they become. Representation matters, but great fiction goes one step further by allowing identity to influence the emotional and structural movement of the story. In this webinar, I introduce The Queer Story Engine: a practical five-part framework built around Desire, Danger, Belonging, Visibility and Change. Together, these elements help writers create queer characters whose identities are woven into the fabric of the narrative rather than simply named on the page.Whether you're writing fantasy, historical fiction, horror, romance, literary fiction or something entirely your own, this episode will give you practical revision questions you can apply immediately. In this episode you'll discover:• Why representation and story integration are not the same thing.• How queerness can become a genuine source of plot, stakes and emotional movement.• Why queer joy can be every bit as powerful a story engine as conflict or danger.• How the same framework works across different genres and worlds.• A simple revision exercise you can return to throughout your writing process.Download the free companion workbook:https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NThkobC18oyEnceGBb2q8AI2SFCFefu8/view?usp=sharingFind out more about my coaching:https://www.thebookcoach.coIf this episode helps you see your story or your characters in a new way, I'd be delighted if you'd subscribe, leave a review, or share it with another writer.Happy writing.

What if the impossible is the best way to tell the truth?Speculative fiction isn't really about dragons, spaceships, magic or dystopias. At its heart, it's about asking one deceptively simple question:What if…?In this episode of Master Fiction Writing, Stuart Wakefield explores why writers have always imagined impossible worlds—and why the best speculative fiction reveals emotional truths that realism sometimes cannot.Rather than taking a tour through the different subgenres, this episode looks at speculative fiction through the lens of story craft. You'll discover why memorable speculative novels begin with human questions rather than clever ideas, how worldbuilding should grow naturally from theme, and why character, consequence and moral pressure matter far more than lore.Using examples from classics and contemporary works including Frankenstein, The Left Hand of Darkness, Never Let Me Go, The Lord of the Rings, Arrival, The Road and many others, Stuart explores what separates speculative fiction that merely entertains from speculative fiction that stays with readers long after the final page.Whether you're writing fantasy, science fiction, horror, alternate history, magical realism or something that refuses to fit neatly into a genre, this episode will help you create stories that are emotionally truthful, structurally compelling and impossible to forget. Why the real power of speculative fiction lies in the Worldshift—the one impossible change that reshapes everything else. How to develop stronger “What if?” premises. Why worldbuilding should be a consequence of theme, not the starting point. How to build speculative worlds that naturally generate conflict. Why readers remember characters and consequences, not encyclopaedic lore.Common mistakes speculative writers make—and how to avoid them.Practical exercises you can apply to your own novel immediately.Download the free Writer's Notebook that accompanies this episode:https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zrvW4E3kAb3xVmJEitvEgiGLetwhV2fC/view?usp=sharingFor more writing resources, articles and coaching, visit:https://www.thebookcoach.coIf you enjoyed this episode, please consider following Master Fiction Writing and leaving a rating or review. This week your hosts Steve Lowry and Yvonne Godfrey interview Frank Mangiaracina of Kline & Specter PC (https://www.klinespecter.com/). Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here To Rate and Review Episode Details: Philadelphia-based personal injury attorney Frank Mangiaracina with Kline & Specter PC discusses how he secured justice for David Coryell, a motorcycle driver involved in an automobile wreck with a delivery driver employed by a Domino's franchise. On July 27, 2016, defendant Steven Morris was driving a delivery vehicle to deliver Domino's food when he made a sudden left turn into oncoming traffic, crashing his vehicle into David and his motorcycle. David suffered severe physical and emotional injuries from this incident. After numerous operations, he was left with the decision to either amputate his left leg or experience permanent and progressive pain. Despite the defense's attempts to claim that Domino's did not have control over a franchisee's operations and therefore could not be held accountable for the actions of a franchisee's employee, Mangiaracina established that Domino's and the franchisee have a “master-servant relationship,” arguing that Domino's did, in fact, have control over the franchisee and therefore should be held responsible. The jury agreed, and on August 13, 2021, a Philadelphia County jury returned a $2,009,553 verdict in favor of plaintiff David Coryell. Click Here to Read/Download Trial Documents Guest Bio: Frank Mangiaracina Frank Mangiaracina focuses his practice on catastrophic personal injury. He is a staunch advocate and proven trial lawyer who helped compile more than $60 million in recoveries in the five years before coming to Kline & Specter. Most recently, in a COVID-era trial during the summer of 2021, Mangiaracina won a $2.1 million verdict against Domino's Pizza for a client who suffered severe and permanent injuries to his leg when his motorcycle was struck by a delivery driver. As co-lead counsel at trial, Mangiaracina gave a closing argument that helped convince the jury that Domino's was responsible for the actions of a franchisee. He was also co-counsel in litigation that achieved a $44 million pre-trial settlement in a product liability case for an oil rig worker who was left a quadriplegic after he was struck by a falling light fixture. In medical malpractice cases, among others, Mangiaracina helped win settlements of $5.5 million, $5 million and $3.5 million for, respectively, failures to timely diagnose stroke, diagnose and treat sepsis and to treat an aortic aneurysm. These recoveries were made with Mangiaracina's prior firm, Sheridan & Murray LLC in Fort Washington, Pa. He also worked as an attorney at Berger & Montague in Philadelphia and as a law clerk with the Philadelphia firm of Saltz, Mongeluzzi & Bendesky. Because of his litigation success, Mangiaracina has been named a Pennsylvania Rising Star by Super Lawyers for four consecutive years (2019-2022). The independent lawyers survey group recognizes the top 2.5 percent of attorneys in the state who are 40 or younger. Mangiaracina earned his law degree at the Temple University Beasley School of Law, where he graduated magna cum laude, in the top five percent of his class and was a member of the Order of the Coif honor society. He was, simultaneously, staff editor for the Temple Law Review and a member of Temple's renowned National Trial Team, which placed in the semifinals of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy's “Tournament of Champions,” an invitation-only competition. At Temple, Mangiaracina won several awards and scholarships, including the Integrated Trial Advocacy Graduation Award, the Benjamin and Natalie Levin Memorial Scholarship, the Class of 1978 Scholarship and the Faculty Law Scholarship. In this episode of Innovation Meets Leadership, host Natalie Born continues the Set It on Fire: The Art of Innovation series by diving into Chapter 2: Get Out of My Sandbox. Joined again by Moriah Hidden as the co-host, Natalie unpacks one of the biggest hidden barriers to innovation inside organization, ownership silos. While many organizations believe innovation belongs to a specific department or select group of “creative thinkers,” Natalie challenges this mindset by introducing the concept of the “sandbox.” When innovation is confined to a single team, it limits collaboration, creates resistance, and prevents organizations from reaching their full potential. This conversation explores how leaders can break down silos, invite cross-functional collaboration, and shift organizations from isolated idea ownership to shared responsibility. For organizations ready to move beyond resistance and into action, this episode offers a practical look at how to create a culture where everyone sees themselves as an innovator.[00:00 – 02:30] Continuing the Set It on Fire Series· Natalie introduces Chapter 2 and the concept behind “Get Out of My Sandbox”· Moriah returns as interviewer to guide the conversation· The focus shifts from foundation (Chapter 1) to organizational barriers[02:31 – 06:30] What Is the “Sandbox”?· How organizations unintentionally assign innovation to specific people or departments· Examples: innovation living with leadership, tech teams, or “creative” groups· Why this creates exclusivity around idea generation[06:31 – 10:30] The Problem with Silos· How “ownership” of ideas leads to resistance from other teams· Why employees hesitate to contribute outside their role or department· The connection between silos and stalled innovation[10:31 – 14:30] Moving from Resistance to Action· Why Chapter 2 is the “resistance chapter” in the innovation journey· How leaders can identify where resistance is showing up internally· Shifting mindset from protection to participation[14:31 – 18:30] Innovation as a Team Sport· Why innovation should not be independent—but interdependent· The importance of cross-functional collaboration· How diverse perspectives strengthen ideas and execution[18:31 – 22:30] Creating Shared Ownership· Encouraging every team member to see themselves as an innovator· Breaking the belief that only certain roles are “idea people”· How leaders can invite contribution across all levels[22:31 – 25:30] Leadership's Role in Breaking Silos· Modeling openness to ideas from any department· Removing barriers that limit collaboration· Building systems and culture that support shared innovation[25:31 – 27:30] First Steps for Organizations· Identify where innovation is currently “owned”· Create opportunities for cross-team idea sharing· Reinforce that innovation is everyone's responsibilityQuotes“Innovation doesn't belong to a department—it belongs to the organization.” – Natalie Born“When we protect our sandbox, we limit what's possible.” – Natalie Born“The best ideas don't come from one team—they come from collaboration.” – Natalie BornConnect with Natalie Born:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nataliebornWebsite: https://innovationmeetsleadership.comBook: Set It on Fire: The Art of InnovationBook & Resources: https://setitonfire.coIf this conversation challenged your perspective, share it with a leader or team that's ready to break down silos and rethink how innovation really happens.

You've lived this moment. The craving hits, specific and insistent, and no matter what you do it just gets louder. So you give in. You eat it. And then... nothing. Flatness. No satisfaction. Just the quiet, maddening question: why did I even want that? That gap between the intensity of the craving and the emptiness of the payoff is not a willpower failure. It's not a character flaw. It's neuroscience. And once you understand what's actually happening, cravings will never have the same power over you again. In this episode, Rick breaks down the wanting vs. liking split — two completely separate brain systems that the diet industry has never told you about. Understanding them won't just explain why cravings feel like need even when you're not hungry. It'll change how you see yourself every time one hits. What you'll discover:Why dopamine is a molecule of anticipation, not pleasure, and what that means for every craving you've ever hadThe University of Michigan experiments that prove wanting and liking run on entirely separate brain circuitsHow hyperpalatable food was engineered specifically to fire the wanting system while bypassing satisfaction entirelyWhy willpower-based approaches were always fighting the wrong battleThe slot machine principle that reframes every future craving the moment you see itWhat it means to become the cause instead of the effectResources and links mentioned:Get on the early access list for Rick's upcoming program:https://news.weightlossmindset.coIf this episode resonated:Subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts, and leave a review if the show has shifted something for you. We've all said it; we've all felt it: "I'm confused!" We are flooded with too many thoughts, feelings, options, and contradictions. It's uncomfortable, we like clarity, so we try to push it away as quickly as possible. Just like anger and sadness, confusion gets a bad rap because it's uncomfortable, but it's serves an almost wholly positive purpose in mental health. The truth is, we have to tolerate feeling confused if we want to learn, grow, deepen, and be able to read unsafe people. This week, we expand our understanding and respect for CONFUSION. No one wants to live there, but in order to be mentally healthy, we've got to learn how to stay in it long enough to let it do what it needs to do.
