This month is our official “AI episode.” We are joined by Ben Riley, who wrote a guide for considering the use of AI for education. Our discussion considers the tasks for which AI might be useful, and the multiple concerns we have for its use as a substitute for thinking. Later, we read a study that shows AI can help people produce incrementally more creative task solutions. However, we are unconvinced that is ever the purpose of the educational process.

Disney Chorus and Orchestra [00:20] "Little April Shower" Walter Disney's Story of Bambi Disneyland ST 3903 1960 Plip plop plip. You may recall from the last episode we heard a track from Stay Awake. On that album, "Little April Shower" is performed by Natalie Merchant, Michael Stipe, and the Roches (https://youtu.be/7ObPekx0h0M?si=BWAulm8X4hnsji14). Thelonius Monk [03:35] "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" Straight No Chaser Columbia CS 2651 1967 Monk takes a fine run at this standard originally recorded by Cab Calloway. Helped out here by Charlie Rouse on tenor sax, Larry Gales on bass, and Ben Riley on drums. Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein [11:14] "The Upside Down" Stranger Things - Volume One (A Netflix Series) Lakeshore Records 2016 Ah, the first season (https://youtu.be/b9EkMc79ZSU?si=8SqvgKenleN2NEJ0) was pretty near perfect. Had to go with the iconic title track. Frank Sinatra with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra [12:21] "Call Me" Strangers in the Night Reprise Records FS 1017 1966 Oddly enough, Frank has not one but two (2!) Petula Clark covers on this album including this one. I much prefer the brassy sassy production of Petula's version (https://youtu.be/M_mkSWxN2xk?si=gya-HwLlYCWK093i). Less Art [16:22] "Diana the Huntress" Strangled Light Gilead Media RELIC88 2017 Featuring members of Kowloon Walled City and Thrice. Igor Stravinsky and the Columbia Symphony Orchestra [19:34] "Firebird Ballet Suite (1945): Introduction - Prelude and Dance of the Firebird - Variations" Stravinsky Conducts Firebird Suite/Petrushka Suite Columbia Masterworks MS 7011 1967 This is the 1945 arrangement of The Firebird Suite. Roxy Music [22:44] "Over You" Street Life - 20 Great Hits EG EGTV 1 1986 A single orignally from Roxy Music's Flesh and Blood (https://youtu.be/3TL-Bc1giO8?si=FaZvmtDfdg2K-5uF). Evidently recorded as a way to tes tout Phil Manzanera's recently constructed studio. Made it as high as number 80 on the Hot 100. Death Valley Girls [26:07] "Electric High" Street Venom Suicide Squeeze SSQ181 2021 (originally recorded and released in 2014) Closing track to Death Valley Girl's debut studio album. Psych rock excellence (https://youtu.be/AO8z3AwIIaw?si=JCyzx7zyGK17UD5K). Salem 66 [31:08] "Seven Steps Down" 1984 Great Plains [mm:ss] "When Do You Say Hello" 1983 Strum and Thrum: The American Jangle Underground 1983-1987 Captured Tracks CT-302 2020 If you love jangle, you'll love Strum and Thrum. 28 tracks of jingle jangle goodness. An exceptional compilation that includes a 80 page booklet that dives into the scene. Yo La Tengo [36:39] "My Heart's Not In It" Stuff Like That There Matador OLE-1079-1 2015 It's hard to choose just once song from this album, but the opening track does a great job getting the listener in the mood for the album. It's a lovely rendition of the Gerry Goffin/Russ Titelman single recorded by Darlene McCrea (https://youtu.be/CuetP9wAHnY?si=o9YtuELwMU3C6S0v). New Order [39:25] "Sub-Culture" Sub-Culture Factory fac 133 1985 A remix by John Robie of the band's third single from Low-life (https://youtu.be/Uetuplhan_U?si=Or8I0F30teDUWLOh). The flip side is, of course, Dub-Culture. Ahmed Ben Ali [47:53] "Subhana" Subhana Habibi Funk HABIBI022 2023 That's right... reggae by way of Libya. Evidently reggae arrived right around peak Bob Marley and the Wailers and it took off from there. Barren Harvest [52:46] "Claw and Feather" Subtle Cruelties Handmade Birds HB-071 2014 Some dark and lovely ambient folk metal from Portland featuring Jessica Way of Worm Ourobouros. Nancy Sinatra [58:33] "Sugar Town" Sugar Reprise Records RS-6239 1967 A Lee Hazlewood number (naturally) that he says is an allusion to LSD sugar cubes. From the age of ten, Steve immersed himself in classical percussion, marching drumlines, pit orchestras and big band jazz ensembles. He then made the commitment to study with world-renown jazz drummer Danny Gottlieb at the University of North Florida. There he had the opportunity to learn the extensive hand techniques originated by Joe Morello. He focused on the history of jazz drummers, most notably Mel Lewis and his influence on big band drumming. As well as the drummers of Count Basie and gravitated towards small group drummers such as Shelly Manne, Philly Joe Jones, Jimmy Cobb, Ben Riley and Ed Thigpen. During his time in Jacksonville, Steve met Ulysses Owens Jr. a native Floridian and NYC based jazz drummer. For five years Owens mentored Steve on drums and the music industry. Under Ulysses' guidance, Steve expanded his musical knowledge and mindset and was given the tools required to be a successful musician in New York. This mentorship jump started Steve's journey to New York City in 2011, where he studied with Billy Drummond at New York University Steinhardt School of Music while pursuing his Master's Degree in Jazz Performance. After graduating from NYU in 2013, Steve Picataggio began a professional career as a bandleader and sideman. He also played in Suzi's band for a performance and interview on Kids Place Live at the Sirius XM Radio Studios in Washington, DC. Steve has been the drummer for Broadway's Lesli Margherita since 2013 and appears on her record Rule Your Kingdom: Live at 54 Below (Broadway Records), All Hail The Queen (Feinstein's 54 Below) and Broad (Birdland Jazz Club).  He also plays drums for Wicked Divas, a cabaret show featuring current and former actors from Wicked. He has played the Off-Broadway shows Under The Bodhi Tree (Royal Family Theater) and About Love (Sheen Center). Currently, Steve is the drummer with Four Phantoms in Concert. We have a special edition of The Big Table Podcast on today's episode. Presenting Adaptation, the inaugural event of a new literary salon series and collaboration between USC's Dornsife Experimental Humanities Lab and Soho House. Adaptation will feature conversations between writers and screenwriters discussing the art of adapting books into TV and film. Up first, the Oscar-winning writer-director Cord Jefferson and the USC distinguished professor and novelist Percival Everett. Jefferson adapted Everett's novel Erasure into the Oscar-nominated film, American Fiction, which opened in December 2023. Jefferson went on to win the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay a few days after this conversation was recorded. On the episode, Jefferson and Everett discuss the process of taking an experimental and innovative text like Erasure and turning it into something that honors the new form while staying true to the spirit of the original work. This is an initiative of Danzy Senna in collaboration with curator Margot Ross. We thank them both for including us in this incredible new series and for the opportunity to preserve these valuable conversations for posterity. It was a magical night in an intimate room and so we are very glad to be able to share it with a wider audience. Giving up alcohol doesn't have to mean giving up all the other things that booze may have played a part in, and that includes socialising, dancing, and feeling free. Sure, partying our socks off without alcohol to turn the self-conscious switch off can seem daunting. But what if this was a drink-and-drug-free party? Our podcast guests this week have all changed their drinking and embraced sober clubbing. More than that, these sober party fans have been busy arranging events across the UK so that those of us who love to dance can still come together safely to do what we love: rave! Our podcast guests include Roxy Deniz Ozalp from the original morning wellness rave, Morning Gloryville, Neil Hudson-Basing from a brand new sober clubbing experience, The House of Happiness, and Ben Riley from DryWave whose Sundown session with legendary N-Trance takes place this Bank Holiday weekend, 27 August. Freelance writer and journalist Ben Riley joins Liz and Ben for a magical history tour as Susan Sto Helit teams up with a couple of monks to stop time...er...stopping in the twenty-sixth Discworld novel: 2001's Thief of Time. In Ankh-Morpork, a mystery woman tasks the odd but talented Jeremy Clockson to build a clock so accurate it can measure the tick of the Universe. In mountain monastery of Oi Dong, Lu-Tze, sweeper of the History Monks, gains a new apprentice: the unmotivated but gifted Newgate "Lobsang" Ludd. And in his domain, Death senses that the Auditors of Reality, grey entities who count every atom, are once again seeking to curb the chaos of life. He recruits his granddaughter Susan to help find the son of Time. If they can't, he'll have to get the old band back together and ride out for the end of the world - at precisely one o'clock, this Wednesday... Pratchett brings back a string of old favourites for this action-packed romp through...well, not quite through time, but it's certainly "about" time. It's the last book to properly star Susan Sto Helit, and for that matter Death; it brings back Lu-Tze, the sweeper who nudged Brutha in the right direction back in Small Gods; and Nanny Ogg is here too, in her first major appearance since the last Witches book, Carpe Jugulum. Oh, and there's a main character named Lobsang, and we know all about that name... Is this what you were hoping for in a third outing for Susan? How do you feel about the fate(s) of Lobsang and Jeremy? Where do you land on having an in-universe excuse for continuity errors in Discworld? And are the monkish wisdom jokes okay because they're based more on kung fu movie tropes than actual Tibetan culture, or is it still a bit on the nose? Join the conversation using the hashtag #Pratchat48 on social media! Guest Benjamin Riley (not to be confused with Spider-Man clone Ben Reilly) is an award-winning freelance writer and journalist. Science comedian and public health nerd Alanta Colley joins Liz and Ben on their second trip through Discworld into Roundworld, as they join Rincewind and the wizards of Unseen University in Pratchett's second collaboration with Ian Stewart and Jack Cohen: 2002's The Science of Discworld II: The Globe. While on a team-building exercise in the woods near Unseen University, Archchancellor Mustrum Ridcully and his faculty are accidentally swept along when something makes its way through the Discworld into Roundworld. That something turns out to be elves - nasty, parasitic lifeforms who feast on the imagination and emotions of others. Roundworld - the universe in a bottle created by the wizards' experiments, which somehow runs without any magic - has been altered by their presence. Now the wizards - including Rincewind, the long-suffering Egregious Professor of Cruel and Unusual Geography - have to find a way to get rid of them without dooming the local human population in the process... Having entirely missed humankind in The Science of Discworld, the wizards are back for another go! And so are science writers Ian Stewart and Jack Cohen - but this time, they don't want to explain cosmology, basic physics and the history of the Earth, but instead sell you on the idea that storytelling is the essential ingredient that makes humans...human. Are we really Pans narrans, the storytelling chimpanzee, rather than Homo sapiens, the "wise man"? Is it wise to write a popular science book with an author who will guarantee the book will be read again twenty years later - and to include some "cutting edge" science, no less? What do a debunked psychological experiment, the term "overcommitment", and filthy explanations of fairytales have to do with it? And who's this shrewd and world-wise street wizard named Rincewind, and can we have some more of his adventures please? Let us know what you think using the hashtag #Pratchat47 on social media, and join in the conversation! Guest Alanta Colley is a comedian, science communicator and storyteller whose solo shows include Parasites Lost (about parasites), Days of Our Hives (about beekeeping) and The Origin of Faeces (you can probably work that one out yourself). She also wrote and performed the "comedy experiment" You Chose Poorly with our own Ben McKenzie. Since 2017 Alanta has also been the host and producer of Sci Fight, a series of comedy science debates; both Ben and Liz have been guest speakers, along with previous Pratchat guests Anna Ahveninen (#Pratchat35) and Nicholas J Johnson (#Pratchat38). Jazz drummer BEN RILEY joins me in The Engine Room this week to discuss his drumming journey. When in High School Ben was taught by Ray Haughn, who introduced him to the Ted Reed book 'Syncopation For The Modern Drummer', he began having private lessons when he was in year 10 with Laurie Kennedy, and had his first paid gig while in school filling in for Ray Haughn in the band 'Polished Brass'. Ben continued his studies at the Adelaide University under the guidance of lecturer Laurie Kennedy. He met Kym Purling and Tim Bowen during this period, they formed the first Kym Purling Trio. The trio received wide recognition all around Australia and also served as the rhythm section for many of Australia's leading jazz musicians and vocalists. During the mid 90s, he also recorded his first albums, Trio Juice, Catherine Lambert & The Kym Purling Trio, and Let's Swing! Ben was a member of the Kym Purling Trio up until Kym moved to the United States in 1998. Following Kym's departure in 1998 David McEvoy was recruited, forming the Boss Trio. After graduating from the Elder Conservatorium in 1994, completing a Bachelor of Music majoring in Jazz Performance, Ben travelled overseas to study drums with some of his favorite players including Kenny Washington. During the interview Ben mentions his fascination with Roy Haynes drumming in the "Matrix", which is the second track on the Chick Corea album "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs", and was reinspired during this interview to complete his transcript of it. Here is a link to the song that he is referring to: https://youtu.be/nKuQ6gwbPqk. I look forward to hearing from Ben once he has completed the transcript! Ben is a member of The Airbenders, a Jazz Organ trio that formed in 2009 as part of the Artist in Residence initiative run by JazzSA. They quickly became one of the most exciting groups to see in Adelaide. Led by Hammond organist Paul White the band also has the incredible James Muller on Guitar, they have been the resident Tuesday night band at The Gilbert Hotel for 9 years! This overlooked album was Monk's fourth for Columbia and of course featured his wonderful quartet with his right hand-man, Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone and two fresh faces in the bass and drum department who would remain with Monk for four years. They are Larry Gales on bass and Ben Riley on drums. The Monk Jazz Feature is to honour his Birthday Anniversary which takes place on Oct. 10. This is one fine album that many people forgot about and has a variety of tunes that are standards given the unique Monk treatment. A delightful version of the children's song, "This Old Man" is given a Monk guise. A Monk solo piece on an old obscure ballad by Irving Berlin is a sheer delight. Two Monk originals also grace the recording done on October of 1964. Happy 102nd Birthday Mr. Monk, your music is a fresh as tomorrow.

This was one of the finest tenor saxophone tag-team bands in Jazz. The two contrasting tenor saxophone masters stayed together for almost three years (1960-63) before Lockjaw Davis rejoined Count Basie's band and Johnny Griffin headed for greener pastures in Europe. Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Johnny Griffin recorded many albums for both Prestige records of which Davis was under contract and Riverside (Jazzland) who Griffin was contracted to. The rhythm sections changed over the years but on this their first date together as a band, the pianist was Norman Simmons who was also a fine composer/arranger. The bassist was Victor Sproles. Both Simmons and Sproles were like Griffin from Chicago. The drummer was the up and coming Ben Riley who went on to play with Thelonious Monk for many years. This album sets the tone for the way this band operated.....lots of great hard blowing and mucho excitement and lots of wonderful exchanges between the two tenormen. In this band, Davis was always the first soloist. "Battle Stations" is the name of the date and although these men were not at war there was always a scent of a battle. Enjoy!

Thelonious Monk had a long and productive contract with Columbia records but in 1968 it was coming to an end. Soon after his saxophonist of 11 years, Charlie Rouse was leaving and Monk's health was a bit fragile as well. This was the penultimate Columbia album and the final documentation of Monk's working Quartet. The album was called "Underground" and it's iconic cover won more awards and attention than the fine music therein. The album featured some brand new compositions by Monk and 3 delightful trio tracks without Rouse. One rare track was with vocalist Jon Hendricks who sung his words to Monk's tune "In Walked Bud". That in itself was something very new for Monk. The 3 full Quartet tracks with Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone, Larry Gales on bass and Ben Riley on drums are superb and the 3 tracks are all brand new Monk compositions. "Boo Boo's Birthday" is for Monk's daughter Barbara and a wonderful ballad in 3/4 time (Monk's only waltz) is called "Ugly Beauty" and the best is "Green Chimneys" in which the band stretches out for 13 minutes. This is one fine album and was recorded in December 1967 to February 1968. This incredible album was the recording debut of one of the most unique voices on the flute, Jeremy Steig and it was also the debut of the awesome pianist Denny Zeitlin. It was done for Columbia records in 1963 and Steig and Zeitlin had never been in a recording studio before. They produced what is one of the most startling debuts in Jazz history and sadly this recording has been forgotten. Steig and Zeitlin are backed very ably by the well known bassist Ben Tucker and Thelonious Monk's drummer, Ben Riley. Steig is uses humming and singing into the flute at times to produce a hair-raising effect. Denny Zeiltin went on to an amazing career and he is still very active in the Bay Area where he works both as a pianist and as a psychiatrist. Dr.Denny Zeitlin!! The album consists of a nice mixture of standards from the Great American Singbook and some very well known Jazz standards by Miles, Monk and Sonny Rollins. "Flute Fever" is a classic and has lain fallow to too long...hear it here!

Note: All music heard in this episode is from Noah's album Ripples. At the end of this podcast is the full track (10:21) entitled 'Ripples (for Margie).' Jazz pianist and composer Noah Baerman's tenacity and his cutting edge yet soulful music have made him an inspiring figure to a growing legion of admirers. Ten years after nearly walking away from the piano due to his struggles with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), an incurable connective tissue disorder with which he was born, Noah is playing and composing with more authority than ever. These challenges and his experiences as a foster parent have deepened his already fierce commitment to "message music." Noah earned his B.Mus. and M.M. from Rutgers University in the 1990s under the mentorship of Kenny Barron. Since then he has participated in and composed for numerous recordings, including eight CDs as a bandleader. His 2003 release Patch Kit features jazz legends Ron Carter and Ben Riley and revolves around his struggles with EDS ("Much more than just a commendable exercise in education and humanitarianism, this is a wonderful and inspiring musical journey that's a testament to the power of jazz, humor and positive energy to turn a challenging situation into one of joy and hope." - Joel Roberts, All About Jazz - New York). Patch Kit raised awareness and funds for EDS and led to an invitation from Marian McPartland to be a guest on her long-running NPR program Piano Jazz in 2005. Two compositions premiered on that show then appeared on his album Soul Force, a tribute to the life and message of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Soul Force featured Noah's writing for large ensemble, here featuring trombonist Robin Eubanks, percussionist Warren Smith and saxophonists Steve Wilson, Jimmy Greene, Wayne Escoffery and Claire Daly. In 2008 he was awarded a "New Works" grant from Chamber Music America/Doris Duke Foundation. The resulting Know Thyself, an emotionally sweeping 65 minute suite for septet, was premiered at Wesleyan University's Center for the Arts and at the Jazz Gallery in New York and recorded for a 2010 release. Baerman lives in Connecticut, and has been gaining a strong reputation as an educator. He teaches at several institutions including Wesleyan University, where he directs the Jazz Ensemble and teaches graduate courses in music. His teaching concepts have been codified through nine well-regarded instructional books published by the Alfred Publishing Company. His blog, NB Pontificates, covers topics ranging from frank discussions of his experiences as a survivor of disability and child sexual abuse to his popular musical Top 10 lists and his own vegetarian recipes. In 2012 he was named Artistic Director of Resonant Motion, Inc., an organization that seeks to explore and deepen connections between music and social causes, as well as forming the Jazz Samaritan Alliance, a collective of accomplished artists working to compose and perform socially conscious music. Other projects in the works include a multi-media collaboration with photographer Carla Ten Eyck depicting survivors of cancer and other life-shaking challenges, a foster care-themed set of compositions titled "There But for the Grace," and a series of largely improvised collaborations with his wife, visual and performance artist Kate Ten Eyck. "It is an amazing gift to have a bright future in spite of adversity. I hope to create things of sufficient beauty that I can give that gift back many times over." - Noah Baerman The music on this podcast is from Noah's latest album "Ripples."

The music of Abdullah Ibrahim is always intriguing and impressive and this band of his called "Ekaya" (South African for "home") reflects his compositional skills over his magnificent piano playing. He takes on the role that Duke Ellington did with his band....leading and accompanying rather than featuring his piano stylings. The band consists of a whole raft of great players beginning with trombonist Dick Griffin, alto saxophonist and flutist, Carlos Ward, tenor saxophonist Ricky Ford and baritone saxophone great, Charles Davis. The rhythm is provided by bassist David Williams and drummer Ben Riley. There are 8 compositions by Ibrahim all reflecting his South African heritage and the set begins with the magnificent and majestic "Mandela". This album is perhaps the very best set that Ekaya released and it's called "Water From an Ancient Well" It's an important document that reflects just one side of the great Abdullah Ibrahim.

This is a fun jam session-type recording done in the optimum conditions of a large recording studio with an invited audience. Chairs and refreshment were set up and tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin put together a fine band to play for the assembled hipsters. The session was the brainchild of the owner of Riverside Records, the late Orrin Keepnews.....he later did the same thing with Cannonball Adderley. Griffin, one of the leading voices of the tenor saxophone used the underrated and under-recorded Dave Burns on trumpet. A wise choice. He picked two of his Chicago "home-boys" on piano, Norman Simmons and bassist Victor Sproles and an up and coming young drummer, Ben Riley. The tunes are basically informal jams and are fun and relaxed. The wheel is not being invented here just good "meat and potatoes" Jazz. The host and MC is the redoubtable Babs Gonsales who announces the tunes and peps up the audience. A fun record by some serious "heavies". Join the party!

Ben Riley describes himself as a classical liberal, a Queenslander and a larrikin. He's a former president of the Young Liberals and the current Vice President of the International Young Democractic Union. We came together to find out exactly where we do and don't agree on things like the privatisation of public assets, the State's role in our lives, puppy farms, same-sex marriage, diversity in politics, the environment and our Prime Minister's character.  Plus we laughed about that time he got drunk and was a bit silly.  @benrileyQLD  Malcolm Fraser Obituary Bootgate 2013 Cause of the Week: The Young Liberal Movement of Australia (youngliberal.org.au), Oxfam Australia (oxfam.org.au)

This wonderful recording that seems to be overlooked was Monk's penultimate recording for Columbia Records and the final official documentation of his Quartet with the great tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse. They do three new Monk compositions on this disc. The rest were performed at a later date with Rouse absent due to a death in his family so it is Monk with his regular accompanists, Larry Gales on bass and Ben Riley on drums. The bonus is a tune (a Monk classic: "In Walked Bud")with a vocal by Jon Hendricks, who was visiting the session. This was only the third time Monk had ever recorded with a vocalist. This album won a Grammy for it's unique cover but although it's near the end of Monk's career the music is superb. The title "Underground" refers more to the album's cover rather than to Monk himself who by this time was recognized as one of the most important figures in Jazz music both as a composer and pianist. Check Monk out always!

One of the most startling debuts in Jazz history was this album by Jeremy Steig. Steig, who is the son of the great cartoonist William Steig plays flute. He doesn't double on any other instrument and developed his own sound and concept on the flute. Jeremy didn't consider the flute a delicate instrument but one that could hold it's own with the saxophone or trumpet. Steig, who was born in New York on September 23,1942 is still alive and well and playing, entered the Jazz world with this album called "Flute Fever". It was produced by John Hammond and mysteriously has never been issued on CD. Steig was subject to a lot of criticism for his maverick approach to the instrument but he had many supporters including the great pianist, Bill Evans, who was a fine flute player himself. Marking his debut was Jeremy's pianist, Denny Zeitlin who did score a Columbia Records contract after his performance here. Denny is still alive and well and performs around the San Francisco Bay Area with his trio. Steig and Zeitlin are ably supported by two pros, bassist Ben Tucker and drummer Ben Riley. I'm sure you will be moved and occasionally startled by the outgoing playing of Steig and the ceativity of Denny Zeitlin on this great 1963 recording of "Flute Fever".

Jason Crane interviews saxophonist Wayne Escoffery about his life and his new album, Veneration (Savant, 2007). Escoffery was born in London and moved to New Haven, Connecticut as a child. He sang in a boys choir and then got introduced to the saxophone. Choosing the latter, Escoffery moved into the orbit of legendary saxophonist Jackie McLean, eventually attending McLean's Artist Collective and his jazz program at the Hartt School of Music. In addition to his own band, Escoffery currently performs with the Mingus Big Band, Tom Harrell, Ben Riley's Monk Legacy Septet and in a band with his wife, singer Carolyn Leonhart.
