Accounting lecture made by Abraham Briloff ('37), Emanuel Saxe Distinguished Professor of Accountancy emeritus at Baruch College. Abe has been a part of Baruch College since the 1930s when he was the prize pupil of the revered Emanuel Saxe. He received his BBA in 1937 and was first appointed to the faculty full time in 1944. In 1976 Briloff was named Emanuel Saxe Distinguished Professor of Accountancy. He retired from Baruch's Stan Ross Department of Accountancy in 1987. In the 1990's, he was among the very first to sound the alarm over self-serving and corrupt practices that damaged the integrity of accountancy, helped spawn the Enron debacle, and led, ultimately, to the reforms of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.

Baruch College has been asked to create a plan for the potential redevelopment of a 400,000, plus air rights, square foot building on the corner of 1st Avenue and 29th Street. The purpose of this MBA course will be to develop a series of site and financial analyses of the feasibility for building-out and transforming the site. The course involves a series of talks and discussions by invited speakers coming to the class focusing on the redevelopment of the Bellevue Building. This video focuses on the discussion from developer's point of view, as well as site selection and financing. We all know that nonprofits need excellent Boards, but finding out how and what can they do to maintain excellent governance practices is an issue that yet to be explored. The winner and finalists of the 2012 Brooke W. Mahoney Award for Outstanding Board Leadership will sit down with Dean David Birdsell of the Baruch College School of Public Affairs for a conversation about what makes their Boards and their organizations successful.
“A year ago, City Council member Melissa Mark-Viverito was instrumental in helping to bring participatory budgeting to New York City, engaging her district and giving them say in the political process by allocating a percentage of the council member's discretionary funds for capital projects of their choosing. In 2011, Mark-Viverito was one of four members, along with Jumaane Williams, Eric Ulrich, and Brad Lander, to introduce the process in their districts.” This seminar, therefore, presents a broad perspective on participatory budgeting in government and describes specifically the pilot process in four New York City Council Districts. Gail Levin, Professor of Art History, American Studies, and Women Studies at Baruch College and the Graduate Center of CUNY, invited Isabelle Bonzom, a contemporary French visual artist, painter, and muralist, to speak in her ART 1012 class. Ms. Bonzom discusses the connection between art and humanity with focus on the techniques of painting, including oil, water color, and fresco as well as various drawing techniques in terms of creativity, management, color, and style.

The process of drilling for natural gas, commonly known as hydraulic fracturing or fracking, continues to be a polarizing issue in communities across the country. Fracking has the potential to provide a domestic source of energy that pollutes less than coal and petroleum when burned. The practice would also provide jobs and income to thousands in many economically depressed areas.
