Andrew shares his entrepreneurial journey, starting with working at a company that was later acquired by Sun Microsystems in 2005. He then launched a small business marketing firm which was sold to Reach Local, and later worked on SmartThings, which was acquired by Samsung in 2014. Currently, Andrew is the CEO of Contextual.io, a managed AI solutions provider that was recently sold to a private equity firm. Andrew and John discussed the differences between being owned by private equity firms versus large international or US companies, using Samsung's acquisition of a smart home platform as an example. Andrew explained that Samsung was interested in the platform not just for its current business but for its potential to connect Samsung's distributed devices. They explore how private equity firms prioritize returns for shareholders over cultural or human elements, which can lead to significant changes in the acquired business, including growth through organic or acquisitive means. John shares a story about a friend who sold his family business to private equity, who later regretted the decision due to how the people were treated during tough times. Andrew agreed and emphasized the importance of founders doing their own due diligence on the PE firm, including speaking with other sellers and understanding long-term expectations, as the financial excitement may fade over time. Wethersfield School District Superintendent Dr. Andrew Brooks joined Wake Up Tri-Counties on Friday to talk about last Thursday's Wethersfield School Board Meeting. Dr. Brooks talked about the items on the agenda, updates on construction projects and so on. And then we discussed the TIF request made by Wethersfield School District to the City of Kewanee and HVN Capital LLC, the company that will be operating the dispensary at the former location of The Broken Chimney restaurant. Dr. Brooks tells Wake Up Tri-Counties that the request is for TIF Funds to address gaps in school security including fence upgrades and security cameras.

Today on Wake Up Tri-Counties Kewanee Mayor Gary Moore joined us and addressed Wednesday's Kewanee Planning Commission Meeting where the commission voted to approve a permit for a Marijuana Dispensary to go in at the former Broken Chimney location. Wethersfield Superintendent Dr. Andrew Brooks criticized the idea of dispensary being 250 feet from the school. Representatives from Bridgeway also spoke about the dispensary being so close to their treatment center. Mayor Moore addressed these concerns and stated that he supported the dispensary though if most Kewanee residents were to express opposition to the dispensary, the Mayor made it clear that he would vote for what people want as a representative of the people. The Mayor also discussed Monday's Kewanee City Council Meeting.

This Micro-Grid Program involves solar power and the ability to purchase an electric power school bus at no cost to the school district.

The Wethersfield School Board met on Thursday evening at the Blish Building. In the meeting, the School Board approved an annual tax levy that will not increase taxes for Wethersfield District residents. Wethersfield School District Superintendent Dr. Andrew Brooks talked with WKEI radio on Friday morning to recap the decision regarding the Tax Levy, discussing the open discussion of fund balances as part of an effort at transparency, and to recap the recent success of the Wethersfield Christmas Celebration overseen by the Wethersfield Student Council.

The Wethersfield School Board held their monthly school board meeting on Thursday, September 8th. At the meeting it was announced that Wethersfield student, Yuki Li, had received the National/Rural Small Town Award, an award handed out by the National College Board honoring academic achievement. Also at the meeting the Fiscal Year Budget was discussed and approved. And the schedule has been set for this year's Homecoming Celebration week at Wethersfield.

‘Abolition Futures' is a standalone podcast episode made by Andrew Brooks, Liam Grealy, and Astrid Lorange, co-facilitators of the Infrastructural Inequalities research network. Infrastructural Inequalities examines the unjust distribution of resources, amenities, and opportunities that shape our society and asks how we might intervene in the reproduction of inequality. Together, we produce exhibitions, public programs, workshops, and edit the Infrastructural Inequalities journal. In 2021, the journal published a special issue called ‘Policing, Crisis, Abolition', which sought to investigate how crisis, policing, and infrastructure are bound to one another: the essays and interviews collectively ask how an abolitionist approach to infrastructure might move us toward a world where the needs of all are met. Following the publication of the special issue, Infrastructural Inequalities presented a live, online public program – Resistant Media and Abolitionist Futures – co-hosted by the Media Futures Hub at UNSW in May 2021.
