The joyous and jubilant documentary Sally! - the exclamation mark is deliberate - is a delightful and educational journey through the life and history of Sally Miller Gearhart: a professor of Speech, Theatre, and Women Studies; a fantasy writer; and most known as a lesbian feminist activist who helped transform the world for women and queer people alike. If, like me, you haven't truly heard the name Sally Gearhart before, then you might know of her activist work alongside Harvey Milk, notably from a pointed interview where Sally joined Harvey to debate John Briggs about his noxious and harmful bill dubbed Proposition 6, or the 'Briggs Initiative', which, if passed, would have seen homosexuals from academic positions in public schools. This debate with Briggs is one of the pivotal points in Sally's life, which also included her appearance in notable documentaries like WORD IS OUT: Stories of Some of Our Lives in 1977 and in Barbara Hammer's short film Superdyke. What delights the most about Sally!, the documentary, is that it meets the energy, vibrancy, and advocacy of Sally, the person, and acts as a celebration of activism, queer liberation, queer culture, feminism, and so much more. It is, quite simply, a rapturous delight to watch and spend time with. The film details Sally's life, featuring in depth interviews with those she knew, loved, campaigned with, and built a community alongside. It also features some joyously funny and engaging interviews with Sally herself, recorded in the years before her passing. Sally! is more than just a history lesson, it's a reminder that in a time of great societal upheaval and distress, one of the purest forms of resistance is laughter, community, and joy. They can't take that away from you.I was fortunate enough to talk with two of the co-directors of the film, Ondine Rarey and Jörg Fockele, while they were in Sydney for the Mardi Gras Queer Screen Film Festival screening of the film. Fellow co-director and producer Deborah Craig was unable to attend, but the sense of community and energy around the film and the following discussion carries her energy forward. This interview talks about how Deborah discovered Sally, and why telling Sally's story on screen right now is so deeply important. Ondine and Jörg also talk about the importance of being able to screen a film like Sally! in the world right now, and about the importance of keeping queer activist history alive and relevant. Sally! is a delight of a film, and you can see in person at the Mardi Gras Film Festival on Saturday 15 February. This is a special community screening, where all tickets are just $12. You won't want to miss it. However, if you're unable to attend the screening in person, then Sally! is also screening on demand later in the festival. Join us for a heartfelt and insightful conversation with Katherine Velez, a compassionate Veterinary Social Worker at Cornell Veterinary Specialists in Stamford CT, as she shares her experiences and wisdom in navigating the delicate journey of pet loss, quality of life assessments, and the importance of self-care in veterinary medicine. From comforting grieving pet owners to making difficult euthanasia decisions, Catherine sheds light on the emotional depth and professional challenges faced in veterinary practice. Discover the power of empathy, the role of humor in coping, and the profound impact of veterinary care on both animals and their human companions. Katherine Velez received her B.A. in HDFS with a minor in Women Studies in Spring of 2010. She was involved in Zero Tolerance, a student activities organization and participated in the production of The Vagina Monologues. During her time at UCONN, she completed an internship at St. Luke's Lifeworks (now Inspirica), working at their women's shelter. She also participated in a mentorship program with middle school children through the Stamford Public Education Foundation. This experience helped cement her interest in working with vulnerable populations and encouraged her to think about plans for after graduation. Her advisor, Dr. Annamaria Csizmadia, and professors were integral and supportive of her decision to pursue a social work master's degree. After graduation, Katherine earned her master's in social work with a clinical concentration from Fordham University. During her time at Fordham, she started working as a case worker at a local nonprofit, Person to Person, providing emergency assistance programs part time. She completed an internship with the White Plains Youth Bureau where she developed an after-work program for at risk youth in an immigrant community. She also completed her clinical internship at Norwalk Community Health Center where she provided individual psychotherapy to clinic patients. Upon completing her MSW, she started working full time for Person to Person and was promoted to Case Work Manager as the organization grew and branched out to a bigger catchment area. In 2016, Katherine began working as a Research Coordinator at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) in the Pediatrics Department. She had the privilege of working in several clinical trials within her department, including working with mothers and children in the NICU at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital and running mother-child groups in preschool settings. At CUMC, she earned the required hours toward her clinical license and is now a fully licensed social worker in the state of CT. Today, Katherine is the Veterinary Social Worker at Cornell Veterinary Specialists in Stamford CT where she works with clients and supports staff in the day-to-day human issues that arise within the veterinary field and the human-animal bond. She is also in private practice. Katherine's time at UConn helped her realize her goals of becoming a social worker. The staff and professors she met along the way forever impacted her life and the trajectory of it. It is because of these relationships that she was able to succeed and was prepared to pursue a master's degree. She will forever hold the UConn community in her heart and is grateful for her time in the HDFS program. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/speakingofpets/message

In this episode I'm joined by Roisin Williams who has been in HR for over 30 years and has been a freelancer for the past 3 years. Roisin's career is a fascinating one as one of her first roles was as Equality and Diversity Adviser for Cheshire Constabulary. This was the late 90's where equality and diversity wasn't as broad a topic and was more about improving equality for women in the workplace. Apart from a degree in Women Studies, Roisin admits she had no practical skills or experience to do a job like this, however, she 'took a punt' and submitted an application and ultimately got the job. That approach of 'taking a punt' is one which she applied throughout her career and it's a concept we discuss and why more people should adopt it.As well as working in senior in-house HR roles, Roisin has also worked for some large, well-known outsourced HR providers and we discuss the pros and cons of working in outsourced HR. We also cover what life is like as a freelancer, good and bad, for anyone who might be interested in their career taking that route. On top of all that we talk about the amazing work of a charity called Smart Works, where Roisin does some volunteering. They provide work outfits for disadvantaged women for interviews and Roisin offers coaching for CV's and interviews. It's a phenomenal charity and this part of our chat alone is worth listening to raise awareness of the amazing work they do.Support the show

In this episode, we speak with Stacy Grooters, the current President of the Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Network in Higher Education. Stacy shares her vision for leading POD, reflects on its history of diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, and discusses how educational developers can advocate for higher education. Stacy Grooters is currently the Executive Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence at Boston College and the President-Elect of the POD Network. She earned her PhD in English literature, with a concentration in Women's Studies, from the University of Washington, where she also taught in the departments of English, American Ethnic Studies, and Women Studies. She then spent eight years at Stonehill College, a small liberal arts, Catholic college in Massachusetts, where she founded the Center for Teaching and Learning and co-directed the Gender and Sexuality Studies Program. Stacy's research focuses on the ways that commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion are practiced within the field of educational development. Her 2014 article, “Tracking POD's Engagement with Diversity,” analyzes 35 years of POD conference sessions and journal articles to track changes in how questions of diversity have been taken up by the field. Her current project seeks to define what it means to be an “equity-minded educational developer” and identify the pathways that educational developers take towards growing an equity-minded practice. CARE with Casey and Julie: Technicolor emotions, building your team, and the power of small goals

Julie and Casey interview each other about the best and worst of the year that was, a different way into goals for 2023, and what they're excited about for the future. Along the way they get into assembling your personal team, learning how to be a better friend, and lots of ways of looking at the concept of “care”. Watch this interview on video here!   Thank you to our Season 4 sponsor, Armoire! If you're ready to try a new look, Armoire's high-end clothing rental service (full of amazing women-owned brands) will hook you up! For 50% off your first month's rental + a free item, go to http://armoire.style/voiceis and use VOICEIS in the referral box!   TOP TAKEAWAYS: What could change if you asked yourself this question: “What would make this (mood/task/day/moment/action) feel 5% better?” Small goals for the win! One of the most fundamental things we've leaned into and accepted this year is the need for a team — for community care, instead of just self-care. Emotions are necessary for communication — they are the crucial information that takes our experience of the world from a line drawing to full Technicolor. And we won't be debating that emotions are crucial and not something to be “eliminated” at work anymore.   Casey Erin Clark is a voice, public speaking, and communication coach, performer, author, entrepreneur, podcast host, and leader in both the entertainment and business worlds. She is a fierce advocate for gender justice and spends her days speaking, teaching, and writing about the power of women's voices, while seizing fulfilling opportunities to perform on screen and stage. In 2014, Casey and Julie Fogh co-founded Vital Voice Training, a voice and speech coaching company on a mission to change the conversation about what leaders are “supposed” to sound like and empower everyone to own the power of their full vocal instrument and presence. Casey hails from the cornfields of southern Illinois (where she grew up singing with her family Von Trapp-style) and has a BFA in musical theater from Illinois Wesleyan University. She also coaches musical theater pros of all ages, is a member of SAG-AFTRA and AEA, performed at the 2013 Oscars with the Les Miserables movie cast, and sings with the Grammy-nominated and Tony-honored Broadway Inspirational Voices choir. Recommending books and breakfast restaurants is her love language. Will perform the Lafayette speed rap from Hamilton on demand. Julie Fogh is a voice coach and interpersonal communications specialist who works with actors and business leaders helping them navigate their individual tensions and blocks, revealing the personal power and unique and captivating humanity that exists in all of us. Through Vital Voice Training, Julie and her co-founder Casey Erin Clark blend the toolbox of the professional actor with their powerful frameworks for embracing one's authentic speaking voice to businesses, schools, and organizations all over the country.  Julie was raised in Seattle and earned her BA in Theatre and Women Studies from University of Washington. She earned an MFA in acting from Northern Illinois University, a rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum that engaged with the physical body, the emotional life, imagination, use of language, character construction, non-verbal communication and the truth of the moment. She has studied with  the Moscow Art Theatre and University of Copenhagen and has studied Meisner Technique with Kathryn Gately, Michael Chekhov Technique with Deborah Robertson, and Movement and Period Style with Lloyd Williamson. She loves YA novels and her cranky rescue cat, Ashland.

#26 - Dr. Frances Jones-Sneed and Kamaar Taliaferro, Redlining in Pittsfield

The John Krol Podcast

A groundbreaking study on redlining in the city of Pittsfield shows that this community was not immune to the discriminatory practices in housing and banking for people of color, particularly for African Americans, although, not limited to African Americans. The study was presented by the NAACP, Berkshire County Branch in April 2022. You can hear the audio version of the presentation here, along with a story by WAMC-Northeast Public Radio. I had the opportunity to speak to two individuals intimately involved in this research, including Dr. Frances Jones-Sneed – who spearheaded much of this work years back. In addition, community advocate and historian Kamaar Taliaferro shares some very specific anecdotes from his thorough research on one particular neighborhood that was not only impacted by redlining but essentially obliterated by urban renewal in West Pittsfield. Serendipitously, as the report was being finalized, a once mythical redlining map in Pittsfield was discovered in the National Archives. That's where we begin the conversation with Dr. Jones-Sneed. Frances Jones-Sneed is a professor of history (Ph.D., University of Missouri) and former Director of Women Studies at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, Massachusetts. Jones-Sneed has taught and researched local history for over twenty-five years. She directed three National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grants entitled “The Shaping Role of Place in African American Biography” in 2006 and “Of Migrations and Renaissances: Harlem/NY & South Side/Chicago, 1915–75” in 2008, and "African American Biography" on 2011, all “We the People” projects. She spearheaded a national conference on African American biography in September 2006, is co-director of the Upper Housatonic Valley African American Heritage Trail, a former board member of MassHumanities, and is presently a member of the Samuel Harrison Society. She was a 2008 NEH Summer Fellow at the W. E. B. Du Bois Institute at Harvard University and is currently editing the autobiography of a 19th century local minister, Samuel Harrison and working on a monograph about W.E.B. Du Bois. Kamaar Taliaferro is a lifelong resident of Pittsfield, Ma. born and raised in subsidized housing. He graduated from Pittsfield High School in 2011 and was awarded a Christian A. Herter Memorial Scholarship, and attended Williams College from 2011 to 2014. I provided editing, analysis, and writing for the 2020 Black Economic Council's Idea Jam Success Report. Kamaar is a co-steward of Growing Legends–a project which seeks to develop an Urban Nursery and Youth Forestry Corp in Pittsfield and to inform new ways of communal gathering and collaborating utilizing art and gardening. In 2021 and early 2022, he was a fellow lead researcher on a case study of the Westside neighborhood in Pittsfield, examining the historical record for the presence, and investigating the ongoing effects of redlining in New England's mill towns. Currently, Kamaar chairs the standing committee on Housing for the NAACP, Berkshire County Branch, and is one of a growing handful of Farmers of Color in Berkshire County. You can often find me in Pittsfield at his urban farm tending to and being tended by the earth. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-krol/support

History is full of women misbehaving. In time periods when speaking out could get you burned at the stake, some women had the audacity to speak their minds anyway. Laura Michele Diener, a Women Studies and Medieval scholar, was initially surprised to find the boldest women were in the convents. Today we'll talk about the intersection of mysticism with female empowerment, medieval history, and modern day literature. We'll also talk about two more recent women whose writings and activism got them into plenty of trouble: Sigrid Undset, the author of the classic trilogy Kristin Lavransdatter, and Dorothy Day, the social activist and founder of the Catholic Worker movement. We'll explore the restlessness that all these women shared - for it was this, their unnamable longing, that led to their divine search for connection with all creatures.Laura Michele Diener is a professor of medieval and ancient history at Marshall University, where she directed the Women's Studies program from 2014-2021. Erika showed early entrepreneurial skills when she let her brother throw a pie in her face for $5, she wheeled and dealed her way through high-school, earned degrees in Apparel Design and Women Studies (with an emphasis on China Studies), spent 9 years swinging around a dancer pole, went on to co-create a multi-eight-figure dollar commercial real estate investment company (of which she's still a partner), wrote a best-selling book, Think A Stripper: Business Lessons To Up Your Confidence, Attract More Clients & Rule Your Market. And in 2009 launched The Daily Whip where she's helped thousands of entrepreneurs grow their businesses through BOLD marketing & sales. For over 15 years, Nicole has helped artists and entrepreneurs build their audiences through PR, creative direction, marketing campaigns and paid media. She's also coached over 800 entrepreneurs on how to do their own paid advertising and build their sales funnels. From opt-in to sales page to launch, she's helped build multiple 6 and 7-figure businesses from the ground up, as well as help scale sales for NY Times Best-Selling Authors, well-known influencers, course creators, and creative entrepreneurs from all over the world. Her clients call her the Swiss Army Knife of marketing. Her friends call her addictive. Here's what we covered on the episode:  Forming the Marketing Crush Partnership We first met Nicole on episode 78 and Erika on episode 47 of The Design Business Show How I have known Erika and Nicole for the last few years, have worked closely with them and how in the last year they have created a partnership together which they'll talk about today along with some bold marketing trends they think people should know about Erika tells the story of how she and Nicole met through me and how they formed their partnership Nicole took Erika's TripleXpert Program, her Mastermind and then became a private client – the more Erika got to know Nicole, the more she realized she wanted to work with her How Erika hired Nicole to do Facebook ads for her triple expert program that she launched last year and says Nicole was the first person that made Facebook ads fun and exciting Erika approached Nicole about doing Marketing Crush and she said absolutely, so they launched Marketing Crush in March to a super small list When they first started Marketing Crush it was about creating content and creating a content plan, but as they developed it more, they realized people were not set up for success in their sales funnel, so they changed the business to focus on that and Erika says Nicole is very skilled when it comes to anything involving sales funnels When people sign up for Marketing Crush, they get Erika as their content coach, marketing strategist, creative director, and says on Tuesdays she works with clients on their content plans, and on Thursdays, Nicole is helping people with everything sales funnel related Erika talks about how the online space has changed throughout the years and how it can be really hard to keep up which is why marketing is so important One of the things they always tell their clients is, when you're creating content that is beautifully aligned with what you do, what you're doing is creating a marketing asset that you can reuse again and again Nicole talks about how she took my Conversion Design School program which is where a lot of her ideas and inspiration comes from The biggest challenge Erika and Nicole have had with Marketing Crush is creating an Instagram page for it and Erika explains why that is, so they've decided that this point in their venture, they are not going to create a Marketing Crush Instagram page but instead use it as a billboard space  Bold Marketing Trends A lot of Nicole's inspiration comes from social justice and politics, while Erika's inspiration comes from the Kardashians, and we talk about how the Kardashians have established their businesses, marketing, social media, and brands Nicole shares something she's always thought was important, but even more so now is creating an experience with your brand and thinking about how it makes your audience feel For Nicole, the biggest trend she thinks is coming and has already slowly started is creating a user experience that is interactive and engaging and says this can be done through mindful design, scrollytelling, using narrative visualization, animations, typography, illustrations, 3D, etc. Nicole gives examples of a few brands that are already creating a unique interactive experience for their audiences How Erika personally uses Instagram as a search engine when looking for people, as do many people and says Instagram will be doing more of that when moving forward, so it will become more like a mini Google within Instagram One thing Erika has seen changing on Instagram is there's no longer a need to have these super glossy photos like you used to need, and she says a lot of brands don't have highly produced photoshoots anymore A big challenge most people have is creating high-quality, well-designed content and being consistent with it, which is why it's important to produce different content for different platforms Nicole talks about native visuals like, text message reminders, alerts, the things you see pop up daily on your phone and says she doesn't think they'll be going away in the future because they feel very organic and relevant to people Erika talks about text accounts on Instagram where your content is just text images only and says you can be successful by doing typography, but you want to make sure that they are visually and beautifully aligned to catch attention If you're posting to feed on Instagram, Erika says people should immediately get that you're an expert at what you do and that you truly live your message and believe in it How vulnerability is important, but it shouldn't look like dumping everything out for your audience to see, it should look like taking scary actions and risks Erika says she struggles with posting “normal life things” because she is an idea machine she says and that excites her more than posting a family picture Erika explains how a viewpoint is different than an opinion because it comes from your areas of expertise and experiences and talks about how to share what you stand behind in a way that truly reflects your business Why everyone has to have a sales funnel, no matter what you're selling and how the customer experience needs to be seamless Based on Nicole's experiences, email is where most sales take place so there needs to be an intimacy of the inbox that you want to capture, that's why opt-ins that create value are still important Erika and Nicole talk about removing content clutter, which is throwaway content that doesn't reflect your level of expertise or add to the experience Nicole explains what bro marketing is and says it creates a false sense of urgency, it's overpromising and underdelivering, and can also be non-inclusive Connect with Erika on her website at dailywhip.com, or shoot her a DM on Instagram It is alarming how easy body-shaming becomes a topic for teasing and bullying to little kids. With peer pressure, its effects can be more damaging to the mind of someone innocent. But how can we adults protect them from this if we struggle with it? In this episode of The Fit Mess, Emily Lauren Dick talks about her book Body Positive: A Guide to Loving Your Body and what it tells us about body positivity and the steps we can take to make it practical in our daily lives. The episode also tackles the role of media in the issue, how it affects both women and men, and how your body perception can affect your parenting. Find out how a healthy body outlook is defined in this episode of The Fit Mess with Emily Lauren Dick! One Move Toward Body Positivity  For Emily, there are countless ways where one can move toward body positivity. Focusing on non-physical achievements, dressing comfortably, and talking to a therapist are just a few of the many steps people can take to nourish a healthier outlook of their bodies. But aside from the ones she mentions in her book, Body Positive: A Guide to Loving Your Body, Emily decides to take this movement forward through one particular step. She wants advertisers to take accountability for the images they show. By partnering with the organization Live Life Unfiltered, they plan to soon launch a campaign called ‘Show Me Unfiltered.' This campaign will take after the law in France, effective in 2017, that required commercials to use disclaimers for any sort of image that is digitally altered. Being the leading source of oversexualized and unrealistic models of what a person's body should look like, especially a woman's body, this big move is a demand of transparency for mainstream media. The law being successful in France is proof of how it can possibly be done anywhere. Listen to Emily Lauren Dick as she talks about how health isn't only physical in this episode of The Fit Mess! About Emily Lauren Dick: Emily Lauren Dick is a body image expert and activist who is committed to making girls feel comfortable in their own skin. Her book, Body Positive: A Guide to Loving Your Body, is the number one resource for young adult women who desire to redefine and understand true beauty. Emily believes that educating young people about body image, teaching resiliency, and normalizing real bodies is critical in combating negative thinking and improving self-esteem.  Emily holds an Honors Bachelor of Arts Degree in Women Studies and Sociology from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario. She is also a self-taught professional photographer who has photographed hundreds of women, including all of the young women included in her Body Positive book. Purity Culture and Coming Out With Ambrie Bosworth

This week's episode is both a treat- and a hard pill to swallow. Brooklynn decides to take a (semi-personal) crack at the pervasive purity culture that still dominates the life of young people today. But she doesn't do it alone! Queue episode 12's special guest: Ambrie Bosworth. Ambrie has an educational background with/and Bachelor's Degrees in Anthropology, Ethnic Studies, and Women Studies as well as  just completing her Master's Degree in Social Innovation. As someone who grew up in purity culture and as a queer woman, Ambrie speaks to her experiences of unlearning the harmful indoctrination and eventually coming out as a member of the LGBTQ community...  And of course, she is Brooklynn's younger sister. Together the girls tackle what it was like for Ambrie to come out after being raised in a high demand religion and conservative community. We touch on everything from dating life as an out woman and being fully yourself, to handling conservative family and community, to stepping into your own and releasing performative action subservient to the male gaze and overall purity culture in general. It's a good one. Buckle up.

Dina has always had a passion for supporting parents and children through the early years and beyond. She graduated with a Double major in Liberal Arts and Women Studies and went on to complete a Bachelor's Degree in Child Studies and Development from Concordia University, Montreal. By day Dina is the co-owner at Akidemy Preschool located in Calgary, Alberta and Akidemy Playbox. By night Dina is busy sharing all her tidbits and experience about children, parenting, and simple living on her blog and Instagram. Nothing short of ambitious, her goal is to continue to connect, grow and always share! In this episode: Carving out time. Creating structure & a routine allows us to have meaningful connection time with our kids & allows us to prioritize ourselves as parents. Kids need time to play. The skills and benefits will carry through with them throughout their lives. Sensory play encourages motor skill development, language development, scientific thinking, problem solving, & mindfulness. Simple living involves everything having a place physically but also time management & a predictable environment. Her dad had his own business when she was growing up that‘s been in their family for almost 80 years. Dina's husband is also self-employed. When they met, he had his own brick and mortar retail space. There was just something about that life, including the flexibility and being your own boss, that always appealed to Dina. This is not something that happens often in the field of Education. Dina's career in early childhood education has always been in the nonprofit sector. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP? In 2004, when Dina first moved to Calgary, she was sitting at a coffee shop with her fiance (now husband). She was working for a large non-profit at the time and 24 years old. Her finance asked her, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”. In the building where they were having coffee, there was a bay. She pointed to it and told him that she would want to open up her own preschool program in a bay in a little building like this right in the heart of a community. Then, she wouldn't have the red tape of a board and change could happen more quickly. Her fiance told her that he hoped that she got that one day. Dina remembers walking away from that coffee outing feeling like she had just put her dream out to the universe. 10 YEARS LATER Who would have ever thought that 10 years later, that's exactly where Akidemy would open their doors! Dina and her husband moved into that community in 2006 and got to know all of the different retailers that are in the building, especially the owner of the liquor store. Dina and her husband are both Italian and love wine! The liquor store owner's wife ran a day home and still does to this day. She and Dina often talked about working in the industry. Dina, at the time, was managing day homes. The liquor store owner and his wife knew that Dina's dream was to open a preschool. AN OPPORTUNITY One day, they let Dina know that the chiropractor in the building was leaving and this was her chance to open her program! This was in January of 2014. Dina picked up the phone that night and I called her best friend Tristan who she had known, at that point, for six or seven years. Dina knew that this wasn't something she could do on her own.
