Plus, WNYC's Sean Carlson talks with New York City's public advocate Jumaane Williams about his effort to get Mayor Adams to investigate allegations of sexual abuse on Rikers Island. And finally, WNYC's Janae Pierre discusses the upcoming New York City Hot Sauce Expo with the event's founder, Steve Seabury.

That includes Williams' view of why “if anybody had a mandate, it wasn't him. It was the rest of us” who were elected at the same time “with a very different vision of public safety.”

This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to LauraFlanders.org/donateThe notorious Rikers, a 10-jail complex situated on an island in the East River of New York City, has become a national symbol and a symptom of our current approach to crime. The jail has over 6,000 inmates — the majority of whom are awaiting trial because they can't afford bail — living in unconstitutionally inhumane conditions, a federal court once ruled. In October 2019, the New York City Council passed, and then Mayor Bill de Blasio signed into law, a plan to permanently close Rikers and replace the jails with four borough facilities by August 2027. But the proposed closure has hit roadblocks — from the left, from the right, from the prison guards union and from concerned residents who live near where new jails would be built. Although many support the Rikers closure, there is little agreement as to how and when — or what should replace it. Why is it so difficult to make changes to our challenged carceral system? Joining Laura to discuss the local and national implications of this story are Journalist Nick Pinto, co-founder of Hell Gate, a worker-owned news outlet covering New York City, and New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, who helped pass the law to close the jail. The migrant crisis has been at the center of almost every political discussion in New York City for over a year. As the wave of new arrivals shows no signs of slowing down, Mayor Eric Adams says the city needs federal help because its resources are stretched beyond their limits. Public Advocate Jumaane Williams recently took a trip to the White House hoping to obtain assistance. He joined NY1's Errol Louis to discuss his meeting and what he hopes will happen in the future. They also touched on Adams' recent clash with the City Council over housing vouchers, his views on congestion pricing and what to do about the problems that continue to plague Rikers Island. Peace be with you on this reflective and somber Memorial Day. Thank you very much for joining us! We are excited to share this investigative and educational brand-new episode with you!We currently are being downloaded in 100 countries, globally! On this incendiary edition of Light ‘Em Up, ripped straight from the headlines — we examine the New York City Subway choking death of Jordan Neely, a 30-year-old, unhoused black man who after the tragic death of his mother suffered and struggled extensively with mental illness.Jordan's death on May 1st came on the dirty floor of a northbound F Train at the hands of Daniel Penny, a 24-year-old, white subway rider, from Queens, NY, described as a former decorated U.S. Marine. We ask the question outright, is Daniel Penny a Gotham City “hero” or a “man-slaughtering-menace”? A GiveSendGo Account has raised close to $3 million for Perry's legal defense fund. Can you think of a worse way to be killed, than by being asphyxiated? This is precisely what happened to George Floyd at the knee of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.Like a laser-beam we're focused on this case and the breaking news surrounding it!Our learning objectives will examine:♦ The role race played in this case, if any. Many people have considerable doubt and question if the roles were reversed — if a black man choked to death a white man — there would certainly be hell to pay!♦ The fact that Mr. Penny was granted bail ($100K) and released.♦ We review the 5 M.O.D.'s (Manners of Death).♦ We probe if the criminal charge is correct or should this incident merit a more serious charge such as murder?♦ If there was a “duty to intervene” for the riders on the subway car? ♦ How a “reasonable person” is expected to act under the law.♦ An up-close analysis of NY Penal Law §125.15, Manslaughter in the Second Degree.♦ And we reflect on our relationship towards our fellow man — especially those who are most in need and perhaps spiraling downward in the grips of a mental health crisis. We so often give “lip-service” as to how mental health “matters” — yet we do little to nothing to help those in the most need.Jordan Neely was on the City's “radar” for years before his death on the Subway — yet he continued to slip through the cracks and wasn't able to get lasting and impacting help. This was a preventable tragedy. From coast to coast our country seems to be gripped by fear. We're reminded of the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt assuming the Presidency at the depth of the Great Depression. He helped the American people regain faith in themselves. He brought hope as he promised prompt, vigorous action, and asserted in his Inaugural Address, “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself”.We have exclusive audio from a press conference we attended during pre-production of and in preparation for this episode with The Office of The NY Public Advocate Mr. Jumaane Williams, as we have boots on the ground in the Big Apple. In a time of uncertainty, facts provide calm, reassurance and clarity! The truth must be investigated and defended at all costs! We pride ourselves on asking the tough questions — so that you'll be informed going forward. We want to hear from you! Why He is running for Governor of New York
Episode 326: Jumaane Williams' Closing Argument In Democratic Primary For Governor by Max Politics
New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams now running for the Democratic nomination for Governor, talks about Thursday night's debate and the final days of campaigning before the June 28th primary.
On this Thursday edition of Bernie & Sid in the Morning, the guys react to the completely unsurprising news that Mayor Eric Adams has endorsed Kathy Hochul for Governor in the upcoming election. Who else was he going to pick? His good buddy Jumaane Williams? It was a nice thought, but when it came down to the X's and O's, choosing Hochul was the obvious choice for the Mayor. In other news of the day, more reactions out of the mainstream media have surfaced regarding Mayra Flores' win in Texas, energy experts point out that President Biden could fix our energy issues just by saying a few right things, the fake news continuing the slow but sure departure of its lips from Biden's behind, the President sending a hostile letter to gas companies across the country, Dr. Anthony Fauci tests positive for COVID-19, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis welcomes Elon Musk's support for President in 2024. Last week NY1 hosted the first Democratic gubernatorial primary debate. Moderated by our own Errol Louis and Susan Arbetter, the candidates gave their views on gun control, the economy, abortion rights and the absence of Gov. Kathy Hochul. On this hump day edition of Bernie & Sid in the Morning, Sid goes solo once again and kicks off the program with his reaction to Matthew McConaughey's White House speech on gun control. The Uvalde, Texas native spoke at the White House Press Room podium about the tragic incident in Uvalde, and the importance of bipartisan compromise on the issue. McConaughey played to both camps, explaining that clearly something must be done regarding gun control laws, but that doesn't mean that we can't still abide by our constitution's Second Amendment. In other news of the day, Democrat Candidates for Governor met last night on CBS for the first debate between the three of them. Tom Suozzi and Jumaane Williams took their fair share of shots at Governor Kathy Hochul, but the incumbent is still the front-runner in the primary, and it's not very close. Also, the Saudi-backed LIV professional golf league continues to make big waves throughout the sports world, with big names like Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson resigning from the PGA Tour to pursue the new Greg Norman-led league. Kathy Hochul, Jumaane Williams and Tom Suozzi took part
Two of the Democratic candidates for governor, Tom Suozzi and Jumaane Williams, met tonight for a Democratic primary debate on NY1, where they touched on some of their policy proposals, as well as both going after the conspicuously absent incumbent, Kathy Hochul. Political reporters Zack Fink, Courtney Gross and Juan Manuel Benítez analyze the highlights of the televised event, and share their thoughts on some of the night's more surprising moments.
