In this episode, Lisa and Amanda discuss:A holistic admissions review that looks beyond grades and test scoresWriting authentic, personal essays that reflect a student's true identityStrategically crafting supplemental essays to show university fit and motivationPreparing for campus visits to gather insights for stronger applicationsKey Takeaways: Application readers carefully evaluate every part of a submission, typically spending 5 to 30 minutes depending on the depth, creativity, and authenticity demonstrated.Essays generated by AI are often easily recognized by admissions professionals; they tend to be generic and impersonal, lacking the student's genuine voice and lived experience.Strong supplemental essays require in-depth research into a university's distinctive programs, faculty, and opportunities—showing a thoughtful and specific connection beyond surface-level familiarity.Capturing impressions immediately after a campus visit—including personal reflections, standout moments, and detailed program insights—provides rich, authentic content for compelling “Why Us?” essays. “Have fun with [the college essays]. Be creative. It truly is the creative ones that are fun.” – Amanda LeszczukAbout Amanda Leszczuk: Amanda Leszczuk recently retired from Mariemont High School after 19 years as Director of College and Career Counseling, where she created their college and career program. This episode was co-produced with the Female Founders Initiative. About Regula Buob: Regula Buob is the founder of SoftTec, a consultancy that offers services related to both technical and soft skills. She is also a coach for early stage startups and scale-ups. Regula holds a master's degree in Special Education and another one in Career Counseling. She founded SoftTec in 2009.  Regula went into the education field because it was a way to convince her somewhat conservative father to allow her to study at university — in this field, she could reliably make money. Her background in education is what sets her apart as a startup coach. During her chat with our co-host Merle, Regula discussed why Switzerland supports its startups well in terms of education but not in terms of funding, why she thinks we should invest 1-2% of Switzerland's pension fund into Swiss startups, and why there is an urgent need to change the Swiss “failure culture”.   ‍The cover portrait was edited by www.smartportrait.io. ‍ Don't forget to give us a follow on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin, so you can always stay up to date with our latest initiatives. Building on episodes 102, 103, and 104, we continue to explore the deep impact of these challenges.  We begin by examining the need to address both individual and systemic factors, emphasizing the importance of cultural shifts within medical environments and advocating for meaningful systems change. As the episode concludes, our experts highlight actionable steps medical schools can take to better support mental health, including fostering open dialogue, ensuring accessible resources, and creating a culture of vulnerability. In memory of Dr. Jack Rudell, we close with a piece of his music—a poignant reminder of the personal nature of this issue and the critical need to keep every trainee's light shining. Description of Series  DWDI Special Series: Suicidality in Medical Training dives into the critical conversations around mental health, well-being, support systems, and the intense pressures faced during medical training. Through the power of storytelling, the series intertwines these broader themes with the deeply personal story of Dr. Jack Ruddell, a promising medical student who tragically died by suicide. Jack's journey—his strengths, struggles, and the complexities leading to his untimely death—forms the emotional core of this five-part series, giving voice to the loved ones often excluded from these conversations. Alongside Jack's story, the series incorporates expert insights and data from the literature, offering a human perspective on burnout, depression, and suicide among medical trainees. With a commitment to improving mental health awareness and reducing the stigma around seeking help, the series presents a novel approach by centering personal narratives alongside expert analysis. It also explores actionable strategies for improving medical training environments and highlights the importance of institutional responses after a loss by suicide. Our mission is to reduce shame, encourage help-seeking among medical students struggling with depression, and ensure that every medical school is aware of the postvention resources offered by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).
