Questions about the legitimacy of the principle of double effect when it comes to abortion and saving the mother's life, whether laws should protect the unborn baby at the expense of the mother's life, laws for non-viable pregnancies, and changing pro-choice areas vs. leaving.   Is it just a cop-out to cite the principle of double effect when the unborn baby dies as a result of saving the mother's life? What should lawmakers do when it comes to situations where the mother has to choose between her life and her baby's life? Should she be forced to carry the baby and die as a result? Do pro-life abortion policies make it difficult for doctors to assist pregnant patients because they have to wait until the mother is in danger to address non-viable pregnancies? Is it better to stay in an area that's historically pro-choice and try to change it or move to a pro-life area?

SPECIAL GUEST  Brother Andre Marie Host of ReConquest aired only on the Crusade Radio Network Follow Brother on GAB and X - @Brother_Andre HEADLINE: Voices of Catholic Political Conscience, Past and Present by Brother Andre Marie We are on Buzzards Bay not actually Martha's Vineyard. Pools and bathtubs that is the only place Maggie will swim. To put it bluntly, the thirty-two years intervening from Buchanan's speech and the twenty-eight since the publication of Bork's book have witnessed the acceptance by the “conservative” mainstream of sodomy, abortion, and other forms of deep moral depravity. (I fear that the Republicans were always OK with usury, itself morally depraved and a font of other forms of moral turpitude.) Witness the talks from the just concluded Republican National Convention, where Lara Trump and others chose to include “gay or straight” into the categories of human diversity cast into irrelevance by the transcendent humanity of Americans that the Party of Trump embraces. We even heard a trite pious platitude of depravity, “It's all love” — a variation on the theme of “Love is love” — echoing in the hallowed halls of Milwaukee's Fiserv Forum, uttered by a porn star, no less. Peter Thiel who is a homosexual, PayPal which is one of his many corporate entities, they will deplatform you if you are anti-homosexual.  This is the new Republican party. The moral issues and natural law have been removed. Edward Feser on X posts a photo of a baby in utero with the comment “The Real Forgotten Man”. We don't endorse parties or candidates b/c we have the 501c(3) status but we can mention when things or platforms or stances are wrong. JD Vance was asked about the abortion pill. Aside from the moral question of lying, it is scandalize to say the abortion drug is okay. If he said that he is against the current LA law that has now categorized it a Class A controlled substance. They had 15 minutes of Make Israel Great Again and I cut it off during the convention. This is a difficult needle to thread here. Politics and Abortion The lesser of two evils and all. Someone must step up to the table and say no you are wrong and here is why. Social Moral teachings and statements in our platform - why can't we have that? What is so darned mystifying about these questions? Let's call a spade a spade and this is moral depravity. Amber Rose - why do we need to platform a porn star? When you select the people who speak at something like this, you are sending a signal. The Big Tent welcomes people who think the moral law is optional.  We need to stop and say…NO we are not okay with that. Let's push hard against this. We have a pro-abortion party in the Democrats and now we have a pro-choice party. That is the two choices in my humble opinion.  States Issues -  Political King Makers - that is a whole different level of donations. The claim is that JD Vance is a creature who is a product of Theil and others. The Lesser of Two Evils - Catholics should excise this from their language. We can never do evil so that a good can come from it. You aren't supposed to pick evil ever. The principle of double effect - a choice b/w two things. The good effect to save the mothers life.  The bad effect is that the child when removed from the tubes will die. If you do nothing the child and mother will die. There is a whole other role - the moral calculous that is not the lesser of two evils, it should be called The Principle of Double Effect! HEADLINE: The Lesser of Two Evils by Brother Andre Marie  Take The Win phrase - people say this and I don't believe this. Take the Win is often used to say something happened that isn't perfect but we can work with it but that labels and attitude that we can actually work with it. When this is applied to the political realm means….SHUT UP.

It can be confusing to understand what actually constitutes euthanasia.   Patrick dives into a profound discussion with 16-year-old Elizabeth from Minnesota about the intricacies of euthanasia, life support, and the principle of double effect, all through the lens of Catholic moral theology.   Elizabeth, curious and concerned, asks about the Church's stance on euthanasia and the moral implications of withdrawing life support. Patrick clarifies that the Church vehemently opposes euthanasia as it involves intentionally ending an innocent life, categorizing it as a grave sin.   The conversation deepens as Elizabeth wonders about the morality of discontinuing artificial life support for someone unlikely to recover. Here, Patrick introduces the concept of "ordinary" vs. "extraordinary" means of sustaining life. He explains that while ordinary means (like feeding and hydration) must always be provided if the patient can physically tolerate them, extraordinary means (like a ventilator) may be ethically withdrawn if they no longer contribute to the recovery or the continuation of life.   Enter the principle of double effect, a crucial element in Catholic moral reasoning that Patrick lays out. This principle helps distinguish actions with dual outcomes—where one is intended and ethical, while the other, although foreseen, is unintended. For instance, removing a life support machine is intended to cease the intervention that prolongs dying, not to cause death itself.   Patrick uses the example of an ectopic pregnancy to further illustrate this principle. In such cases, removing the affected fallopian tube to save the mother's life, though it results in the loss of the baby in the womb, is morally permissible because the death of the little child is not the intended effect.

Barbaric Norms: Hamas, Israel, and Just War

The BreakPoint Podcast

The despicable and horrendous attacks by Hamas against civilians last week, including beheading children and kidnapping the elderly, seems a throwback to some distant, barbaric past of human history. We may have thought the world had long ago outgrown such barbarity, but it hasn't. In fact, as shocking as it is, the kinds of atrocities carried out by the Hamas terrorists are the norms of warfare, at least throughout most of human history. Modern notions of just war, proportionality, and distinguishing between civilians and combatants are exceptions to the kinds of warfare conducted by the Assyrians and Babylonians, ancient Greece, the Vikings, the Mongols, and the Aztecs. Massacre sites found by archaeologists in North America reveal how entire villages were slaughtered by Native Americans centuries before European contact.   Similar barbarity continues today, especially in modern undeclared wars such as the Rwandan genocide, the actions of terror groups like Boko Haram, and in African civil wars. Close parallels can be seen in the horrific treatment by government actors of the Uyghurs in China, the Rohingya in Burma, and dissidents in North Korea.   Such brutality should sicken us, though it is far more common in human history, even modern history, than we admit. But, if it's so horrifyingly and historically “normal,” where did the world get the idea that such barbarity is so wrong?   The idea that non-combatants should not be killed in war can occasionally be found in ancient discussions of warfare, typically due to pragmatic reasons such as needing peasants to work the conquered land. Christian Just War Theory, in sharp contrast, saw the protection of non-combatants as a matter of principle, not pragmatism. That principle was grounded in a view of human value unique and distinct to Christianity, that every human being is made in the image and likeness of God.  Despite the Enlightenment's hostility to faith and the pervasive scientism of the nineteenth century, Christian ideas about Just War and the value of the individual retained a strong enough hold on Western culture to shape the Geneva Conventions on the conduct of war. Also, Western domination ensured that countries and military officers would be held accountable for systematic violations of the Conventions as happened, for example, in the Nuremberg Trials after World War II.  As long as these core ethical ideas of the Judeo-Christian tradition hold sway, they act as a check on the worst impulses of our fallen nature, impulses that quickly come to surface in time of war. Of course, war crimes and violations of human dignity still occur by Western actors and should never be accepted or tolerated. However, when barbarities are considered war crimes and violations, rather than norms, they happen far less than in cultures where that ethical tradition is missing.   Last Saturday, the world saw that, in no uncertain terms, that ethical tradition is missing in large parts of the Middle East. This is especially true of Islamic nations. Outside of a few reformers, Islam rejects as idolatry the idea that humans are made in the image of God. The Hadiths, a source of Islamic authority second only to the Quran, calls for the extermination of the Jews, a fact explicitly noted in the Hamas charter. Without grounding for the value and dignity of individuals, a group can be easily defined as “other,” which justifies all actions carried out against them.   It's important to note that the rejection of the value of each person also means that Hamas can use their own people as pawns and agents of propaganda. Thus, Hamas places missiles and military centers in hospitals and schools, knowing that any attacks will lead to civilian casualties that can be paraded before the rest of the world. In other words, dead women and children are the intended plan, not the unexpected consequence.   When attacks like what happened last Saturday occur, Israel has to target missile sites and other military targets to keep its own citizens safe. When doing so produces civilian casualties, it's tragic, but it's still an example of what Thomas Aquinas called “Double Effect.” In his example, it is ethical to take the life of another person, even though that's usually sin, if it is the only way to prevent him from killing you or another person. This is the situation Israel faces. The only way to stop the attacks is to bomb important military sites and to break up the network. So, when civilians die, as an unintended but inevitable consequence, these deaths are on the heads of Hamas for intentionally placing their civilians in harm's way.  Given the politics and history of the region, it is expected for many in the Middle East to cheer on Hamas' massacres while decrying any response by Israel. Their reaction is shaped by a culture, a culture that has been shaped by an Islamist worldview.   On the other hand, many of those in Western nations who defended or even celebrated the massacre in Israel have been shaped by a different set of worldview assumptions, what might also be called a Critical Theory mood. This worldview is also antithetical to Christian ideals about human equality and the value and dignity of the individual. It sees people as belonging to groups, and some of those groups are evil by designation.   With the decline of Christian influence on the West, we should expect to see a resurgence of the kind of bloodlust and sadism that characterized most of human history. All this underscores why worldview is important. Christianity is and has been good for the world, and its decline will bring horrific consequences.  This Breakpoint was co-authored by Glenn Sunshine. The greater the power anything has for good, the greater the power it correspondingly has for evil. This is called the Principle of Double Effect. An example of this might be nuclear power. When you harness nuclear power, it can be used for such good in generating electricity for people's homes and for businesses. But when it's made into a bomb, it can be incredibly destructive. Another application of this principle goes like this: the greater the power anything has for joy in this life, the greater the power it also correspondingly has for pain. You see, God has given us a number of wonderful gifts that bring much joy and goodness to our lives, but they bring this joy and goodness when they're used and enjoyed the way God intended. But, when these same gifts are misused and abused by us, they can bring an incredible amount of pain and sorrow to our lives. I believe this is particularly true of sex. Our sexuality is one of the most meaningful and powerful sources of joy in this life, but it's only when we experience it in the way God designed it. However, when our sexuality is misused and abused, it is the source of unbelievable pain and heartache. Unfortunately, large numbers of young people are finding their lives damaged emotionally, psychologically and physically because of careless and ill-advised decisions they've made with their bodies. Today I'm presenting the Biblical view of sexuality - the way God designed it. I contend that the healthiest, most meaningful, most satisfying and most pleasurable sexual experience is found between a man and a woman in a covenant relationship called marriage.

Súvisiace dávky: PD#244: Spôsobuje náboženstvo vojny a násilie?, http://bit.ly/davka244 PD#243: C. Episode 4 – Physician Assisted Suicide, Voluntary Euthanasia, and Progress Dementia Disorder (PDD) In the second part of this two part interview, Dr. Toni Nicoletti interviews Mr. Samuel H. LiPuma, AssociateProfessor at Cuyahoga Community College and Dr. Joseph P. DeMarco, professor emeritus in philosophy at Cleveland State University, on their new book, The Dying Experience: Expanding Options for Dying and Suffering Patients. The episode begins with a discussion of the definition of a rational suicide and when a rational suicide is morally permissible. The authors then discuss how this definition can be used to expand the moral justification of physician assisted suicide beyond terminal patients to include patients with progressive dementia disorder. Practical problems with this expansion are discussed and the authors also discuss problems with criticisms of arguments against physician assisted suicide and voluntary euthanasia, rejecting the Doctrine of Double Effect as a legitimate way to distinguish justified from unjustified cases that involve hastening death.
