The gang discusses two papers that look into the timing of evolution of the “crown group”. The first paper looks at fossil glass sponges, and the second paper looks at the phylogeny of lampreys. Meanwhile, James gives some sound advice, Amanda has ambitious hobby plans, and Curt imagines the perfect media crossover. Up-Goer Five: (Curt Edition) The friends talk about two papers that look at groups of animals and try to see when the things that we see today in these groups may have first happened in the past and what we can tell us about why those things might have happened. The first paper looks at a group of animals that are made up of many single parts that can all act on their own and these animals get food out of water in a very simple way. This paper finds some very old animals that look a lot like some groups of these animals we see today. This would mean that this group may have been around a lot longer ago than we think. The second paper looks at a group of animals that are long without much going on and a round mouth and live in the water. This group has animals that live in different places that have made people ask why. This paper looks at how all of these animals changed over time and uses that to see when the animals that we see today may have first been around. They find that these animals may have first appeared during a time that was really hot, and that might be why the animals are where they are today. References: Botting, Joseph P., et al. How Government Built America (Cambridge UP, 2024) challenges growing, anti-government rhetoric by highlighting the role government has played in partnering with markets to build the United States. Sidney A. Shapiro and Joseph P. Tomain explore how markets can harm and fail the country, and how the government has addressed these extremes by restoring essential values to benefit all citizens. Without denying that individualism and small government are part of the national DNA, the authors demonstrate how democracy and a people pursuing communal interests are equally important. In highly engaging prose, the authors describe how the government, despite the complexity of markets, remains engaged in promoting economic prosperity, protecting people, and providing an economic safety net. Each chapter focuses on a historical figure, from Lincoln to FDR to Trump, to illustrate how the government-market mix has evolved over time. By understanding this history, readers can turn the national conversation back to what combination of government and markets will best serve the country. Sidney A. Shapiro holds the Fletcher Chair in Administrative Law at the Wake Forest University School of Law. He is the author of Administrative Competence: Reimagining Administrative Law (2020) and Achieving Democracy: The Future of Progressive Regulation (2014). Joseph P. Tomain is Dean Emeritus and the Wilbert and Helen Ziegler Professor of Law at the University of Cincinnati. A highly respected professor and scholar, his teaching and research interests focus in the areas of energy law, land use, regulatory policy, and contracts. Today we have Dr. Rudolph E. Tanzi, who is perhaps best known for co-discovering all three familial early-onset Alzheimer's disease genes. In addition, Rudy's lab was the first to use human stem cells to create three-dimensional human brain organoids and three-dimensional neural-glial culture models of Alzheimer's disease, which became known as “Alzheimer's-in-a-Dish.” These models were the first to recapitulate all three of the key pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease and have made drug screenings faster and cheaper. Rudy is the director of the Genetics and Aging Research Unit as well as the director of the Henry and Allison McCance Center for Brain Health. Rudy is also co-Director of the Massachusetts General Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease at Massachusetts General Hospital and serves as the Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Rudy has published more than 700 research papers and is one of the top 50 most cited neuroscientists in the world. He is author of “Decoding Darkness,” and a co-author of two books with Deepak Chopra, “Super Brain” and “The Healing Self.” Show notes: [00:03:18] Ken opens the interview mentioning that Rudy began playing the accordion when he was just seven years old. Ken goes on to ask Rudy about the time his father gave him a Jimmy Smith album and some advice. [00:05:51] Ken mentions that, in addition to Rudy's musical talents, he was also interested in science growing up. Ken asks about Rudy's participation in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search and what that experience was like. [00:07:09] Ken asks Rudy about growing up in Cranston, Road Island. [00:08:39] Rudy talks about how he ended up at the University of Rochester after high school. [00:09:51] Ken mentions that both Rudy's grandfather and father passed away at the age of 45. Ken asks Rudy if this played a role in his pursuit of a career in genetics research. [00:10:57] Rudy explains how he chose Harvard Medical School for his Ph.D. [00:12:47] Ken pivots to ask Rudy about his time working with Jim Gusella in the early 80's at Mass General, where they were the first to ever find a disease gene. Family studies at the time had shown that the Huntington's disease gene was linked to a polymorphic DNA marker. Rudy talks about this discovery and how the chromosomal localization of the Huntington's disease gene was the first step in using recombinant DNA technology to identify the primary genetic defect in this disorder. [00:16:07] Ken asks Rudy about his work in 1987, when he discovered the first Alzheimer's gene, recombinant DNA technology, which causes the production of amyloid. Ken goes on to explain that mutations in the APP gene can cause a rare form of early onset Alzheimer's. Rudy talks about the paper that came out in “Science” that detailed this discovery. [00:18:38] Rudy discusses his personal philosophy and approach to research. [00:19:43] Ken mentions that in Rudy's book, Decoding Darkness, he writes that few nightmares on Earth can compare to Alzheimer's disease. Ken asks Rudy to talk more about this book. [00:21:50] Ken explains that in the same way our physical capabilities will suffer some form of decline with age, it is also expected that we have some decline in memory and cognitive ability as we age as well. However, Ken goes on to say that when people begin to experience age-related memory lapses, it can lead to a lot of anxiety about their genetic predisposition to Alzheimer's. Ken asks Rudy to talk about the lifestyle factors that play into whether someone predisposed to develop Alzheimer's can stave off or avoid disease development. [00:26:09] Ken explains that aging appears to intensify when people stop challenging themselves with new things. Given this, Ken asks Rudy what his thoughts are on challenging our brains as they age to protect our cognitive abilities. [00:29:08] Ken asks Rudy about the principal advances in...

This podcast features Kate Hudson, the Associate Vice President and Counsel for Policy at the Association of American Universities, and Joseph P. Allen, the Executive Director of the Bayh-Dole Coalition. They discuss the unintended consequences that the Biden Administration's Draft Interagency Guidance Framework for Considering the Exercise of March-In Rights in the Bayh-Dole Act is having on small companies and VCs inside and outside of the biopharmaceutical sector. As well, they detail how well-funded advocacy groups had promoted the use of march-in rights as an effective tool for price controls, and were mistaken in this belief. Kate and Joe also describe a new strategy being pressure tested in DC, promoting the expansion of the application of march-in rights to IP created by the private sector.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's Episode Dr. Raj talks with Dr. Rudy Tanzi about his work in Alzheimer's Disease research, his acronym SHIELD for evading its progression, and how his background as a musician has intersected with this work. Today's Guest Dr. Tanzi is the Vice-Chair of Neurology, Director of the Genetics and Aging Research Unit, Co-Director of the Henry and Allison McCance Center for Brain Health, and Co-Director of the MassGeneral Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease at Massachusetts General Hospital. He also serves as the Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Tanzi received his BS (microbiology) and BA (history) at the University of Rochester in 1980 and his PhD (neurobiology) at Harvard Medical School in 1990. Dr. Tanzi co-discovered the first Alzheimer's disease (AD) gene, the amyloid precursor protein (APP) gene, and the two other early-onset familial AD genes, presenilin 1 and presenilin 2. As leader of the Cure Alzheimer's Fund Alzheimer's Genome Project, Dr. Tanzi identified several other AD genes, including CD33, the first AD gene shown to regulate neuroinflammation. He also discovered the Wilson's disease gene and other neurological disease genes. Dr. Tanzi's team was the first to use human stem cells to create three-dimensional neural-glial; cell culture organoids of AD, dubbed “Alzheimer's-in-a-Dish”. This model was the first to recapitulate all three key AD pathological hallmarks in vitro, and first to definitively show that amyloid plaques directly cause neurofibrillary tangles - and also made drug screening for AD faster and more cost-effective. Using this system, Dr. Tanzi has developed several novel therapies for AD including gamma secretase modulators targeting amyloid pathology and AMX0035, which was already successful in a clinical trial of ALS and now seeking FDA approval. Dr. Tanzi also discovered that beta-amyloid plays a functional role in the brain as an anti-microbial peptide, supporting a role for infection in AD pathology. Dr. Tanzi serves as Chair of the Cure Alzheimer's Fund Research Leadership Group and numerous advisory and editorial boards. He has been named to TIME magazine's list of TIME100 Most Influential People in the World. Dr. Tanzi is a New York Times bestselling author who has co-authored the books Decoding Darkness, and the bestsellers Super Brain, Super Genes, and The Healing Self with Dr. Deepak Chopra. Dr. Tanzi has hosted several shows on public television, regularly appears on television news programs, and has testified to Congress on both Alzheimer's disease and brain health. About Dr. Raj Dr Raj is a quadruple board certified physician and associate professor at the University of Southern California. He was a co-host on the TNT series Chasing the Cure with Ann Curry, a regular on the TV Show The Doctors for the past 7 seasons and has a weekly medical segment on ABC news Los Angeles. The art of medicine happens when physicians combine data and knowledge to deliver better patient outcomes. A physician that relies both on guidelines and their learned experience is creating a culture of data and insights and improving the lives of patients. Whether you're a doctor or a data leader, knowing how to balance data and intuition will always drive better results.Dr. Bapu Jena is an economist, physician, and Joseph P. Newhouse Professor of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School. He bridges his professions to explore the economics of healthcare productivity and medical innovation. Satyen and Bapu discuss leveraging data in healthcare, applying AI in medicine, and measuring the innovation of doctors.--------“We have put a premium on the innovativeness of the technology. There could be a new molecule that attacks a pathway that has never been attacked before. If that molecule doesn't improve life expectancy or improve quality of life, then there's not a lot of value to me in that innovation, even though it's certainly innovative. I care more about whether or not it impacts patients' lives. The correlator to that is that you could have a medication which does not appear to be that quote, unquote, ‘innovative,' at all because it's just a reboot, in some respect, of other medications. But, it's taken in a way that people are more likely to be adherent to. Those types of technologies are sometimes pooh-poohed on, but they could be very valuable because what ultimately matters is the outcome of whether or not a person gets better when they're on that medication, not how innovative it is. This is also a problem when it comes to data-driven interventions, as well. Because, there's a lot of interest in AI and non-medical technologies, or non-life science technologies. The key there is you've got to demonstrate that there's some outcome benefit.” – Bapu Jena--------Time Stamps:*(03:23): Predictable randomness *(12:13): Data points tracking intensity of care *(25:48): AI in medicine *(31:29): The politics of standards of care *(38:41): The challenges of influencing change *(51:18): Satyen's Takeaways--------SponsorThis podcast is presented by Alation.Learn more:* Subscribe to the newsletter: https://www.alation.com/podcast/* Alation's LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/company/alation/* Satyen's LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ssangani/--------LinksRead Bapu's book Random Acts of MedicineRandom Acts of Medicine SubstackListen to Freakonomics MD podcast
On August 6, 1978, the body of thirty-five-year-old bar owner Jack Tupper was found in a vacant lot in the Bronx, just across the street from the local firehouse. His face had been severely slashed, his head and body badly beaten, he had been shot seven times, and finally, he had been set on fire. Witnesses reported seeing a small group of men in the lot attempting to set fire to a box earlier that day, including three witnesses who identified former racehorse trainer Howard “Buddy” Jacobson as one of the men, and one who was able to provide detectives with the license plate number of the car they were driving.Buddy Jacobson was quickly arrested for Tupper's murder and the story quickly became New York's latest scandal: Former horse trainer murders man in love triangle. Jacobson had indeed killed Tupper because the younger man was having an affair with Jacobson's girlfriend but, while the motive may have been a classic, the story was far more sensational and salacious than anyone could have expected, and it turned out the arrest was just the beginning.Thank you to David White for research assistance :)Resources: Allen, Joy. 1978. In 2008, Michale Phelps set a world record while SWIMMING BLIND! As Phelps dove into the water to start the race, his goggles failed to seal properly against his face… instantly flooding them with water and leaving Phelps swimming blind. Unable to see the lines painted on the bottom of the pool, Phelps would have no idea when to initiate his turn when approaching the pool wall. Or would he? See, Phelps had trained and prepared for this exact scenario. He learned how to count his strokes so he could perfectly time his flip turn and re-launch himself into the next lap… all without seeing anything. Crazy pants, right? You know what crazier still? Phelps set a WORLD RECORD in that race… all while swimming blind. Because Phelps trained for the “messy” moments (when conditions were faaaar less than ideal) he was able to win (and set a WORLD RECORD no less) regardless of the conditions. This got me thinking… this 100% applies to how we often approach diets, health, and fitness. Diets often tell us that “perfect” is the only way to get results. “Eat zero carbs.” “Cut out all sugar.” “Only eat between these hours.” But this approach is a massive mistake, because it sets you up to only win when the conditions are perfect. But when life throws you a curveball: -The kids get sick -Your car gets rear ended -You travel for the holidays -You sprain an ankle And conditions are faaaaaaar less than perfect and ideal… your “perfect” diet or exercise routine will probably crash and burn. So, here's what I suggest you do instead. After listening to this episode, you'll: -Never again fall for the Great Diet Deception -Get a process that will move closer to your goals no matter what… even if the kids are puking everywhere -Get your hands on the mindset that Phelps used to ensure his success -And more! According to the late Father Gabrielle Amorth, co-founder of the International Association of Exorcists, Hitler, Stalin, ISIS, Harry Potter and Yoga were all, in one way or another, touched by demonic influence, This does perhaps go some way towards explaining how he managed to rack up over 150,000 exorcisms throughout his long life. Of all of these cases, however, he admitted openly that only a small minority had been true, legitimate cases of demonic possession. Despite this, exorcism remains more popular today than in any other time in history, where it has existed as a long running ritual spanning centuries, continents and cultures. From personal demons to group possessions, humans battle with the Devil is a long, winding history of violence, perversion and projectile vomit. This video game is not in any way affiliated with the works of JRR Tolkien outside of the New Line Cinema adaptations of the novels directed by Peter Jackson. Any similarities between the events or characters in this game and characters from the novels not portrayed on screen are purely coincidental and our lawyers are extremely confident about it if we're being honest. Look, at the end of the day we really just wanted to make this game but inrellectual property is SUCH a drag to deal with so we tried our best. Please do not take legal action against us, thanks in advance. Love, Electronic Arts!! Even keeled and turned so his back faces you and the rest of the Eye's denizens lined up at the stall hoping for a bowl of something with an ounce of flavor, Emphis tosses unknowable ingredients high into the air above the flames and lets them tumble back into the wok with a magnificent sizzle. He pours the wok's contents out into a container and hands it to you, barely making eye contact before averting his gaze to meet that of the next customer to wordlessly indicate there's another serving coming right up. You get nothing more. Stepping away from the stall and opening the lid to let the overwhelming aroma of mysterious spices rip through your senses, you glance back at Emphis who has somehow already served four more customers in the interim. "Fun guy," you think to yourself and take a bite of the best meal you'll have all week.Discussed: Citizen Sleeper, Rogue Legacy 2, Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure, Retro Game Challenge, Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2, Dragon Quest V, Dragon Quest IV, Yoshi's Island DS---Find us everywhere: https://intothecast.onlineJoin the Discord: https://theworstgarbage.onlineFollow Stephen Hilger: https://twitter.com/StephenHilgerFollow Brendon Bigley: https://twitter.com/brendonbigley---Produced by AJ Fillari: https://twitter.com/ajfillariSeason 4 Cover Art by Scout Wilkinson: https://scoutwilkinson.myportfolio.com/---Join the Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/intothecastThanks to all of our amazing patrons! | Kyle B | Nick L | WallyWoo | Cody D | Alex Z | Miles L | Mark E | Sid T | Jeffrey A | Anthony L | Trevor S | Sebastian G | Jacob M | sourorrin | Andrew C | X L | fingerbelly | CJ M | Miles D | Dominic G | Macy P | Callie BD | Jesse Y | Callan C | Zachary M | Thomas B | Joseph D | JC G | Nigel B | Ryan R | Sasha M | Jake L | Cody G | Derek N | peppc | Sam B | Jesse W | Coco N | Ronan B | Julia B | Douglas W | Kaelan T | Honshew | Dan | Gregory | Austin K | Tony D | Mike T | no name | Espen S | Shaun K | Michael C | Maarten G | Paige A | Katie | The Family Computers | Pearson B | Anna E | Codes | Jim VDH | Matt B | Andy M P | Wesley | Logan W | Laslie C | Charlie D | Erik B | Heath S | Marc H | Connor S | Adam V | Ronin W | William W III | Jonathan B | Will N | Mike | Brandon T | Daniel R | Adam L | David H H | Nick V | Mike K | Eric A-F | Judith S | Alejandro M | Susannah G | Mush | Al F | Mick W | Keith S | Markus W | AggressiveToast | Liam R | Pippin N | Matt M | Minh N | jorgamund | Butterfly Bandit | Naman B | Gabe O | Josh H | Bellspr00ut | Kite | Doug | Lasse B | Retromation | John Thomas F | Juanda | Adam L | Geocracy | George L | b0rt | Elen R | David D | Casey D-VA | Zach B | Alex L | Connor C | Jeff N | Baker S | Daniel M | Adam S | Sergio L | Kyle S | ninjadeathdog | Sous Chef Russell | Greg | Zachary G | Adnan S | Celia S | Chris P | Lukerfuffle | David O | Kelly | Rory B | Adam V | JTH | David M | Varsha S | Stumpy J | Verlinp | Matthew W | Andy S | evie | A42PoundMoose | Sam T | Maxwell H | Robert M | Jonah K | Morgan M | Robb S | Owen P | Samuel H | Michael W | Andrew S | Tom | Mitchell J | Justin M | Will L | InterJustin | Evan H | Sam B | Robert O | Xavier K | Charlie E | Theresa N | Jamal M | Korey | Thomas W | Monte J | Liam M | Nick S | Jellums | Peter R | Jennifer S | Will H | Derek H | Brian D | Augusto D | Ethan K | Michael O | Brandon B | Peter H | Matt S | Albatross Soup | Noah H G | Christiaan S | Nick P | Ryan O | CosmicBluesMinis | Derek N | Megan T | Josiah R | Austin B | Kaija R | Khaleel G | Rowan | Sam S | Hunter F | Togame1 | JT | John H | Makenzie B | James O | SalivationArmy | Bishop_Tacos | Alex L | Dakota K | Ryan H | Blake M | Wanda S. | Scott T | Rachel L | Ian B | Onatah | Samuel H | Myles H | Wiley K | Moonstone5tella | garretsr | Eric D | Latte709 | Phillip F | Charles S | The WolfeKnight | Patrick M | Michael N | Brigitte L | Lee R | James Y | Reuben J | John C | Anisa | Maurice | Nick M | Trey L | Sam N | Madeleine | Randal S | Matthew M | leigha | Michael N | Connor | Garrett P | Justin W | Brendan K | Michaela | Adam G | Sebastian P | Júlía H | Marc | Christopher S | Alanna O | Scott R | Jackson F | Megan B | Erika Y | Christopher D | Matt D | Sebastian E | Liam B | Meredith | wreck | Daniel C | Coop | Brian M | Richie | Alexander M | Andrew K | Roc B | Alex G | Dan O | Laura W | Roberto S | Leo C | Wishbone | saddlebread | Roberge | Ian A | Max M | Michael V | Kyle R | Selina A | Noah O | Rich E | Michael G | Arcturus | Raihan S | Matthew M | Rowan S | Chris R | leastest | Kyle L | Anthony G | Adam | The Binding of Andrew | Hepahe | Jake L | Conor P | Cory F | Luke L | Matt C | Cian | John J P | GJ C | Mr Mallard | Sarah G | Vanessa J | Jack F | Kelsey J | Chase A | Elyse H | Anna | Nick Q | Tom H | Wes K | Erica S | Maria D | Chris M | RB | Jared B | Toots M | Aaron D | David C | Karen H | Walter N B | Kristin T | Joseph P | Tom W | Chad W | Chy J-B | Michaela W | Ryan W | Adam F | Scott H | Denys T | Lauren H | Andrew M | Alexander St. P | Griffin F | Ben G | killian | Therese K | Matthew V | Nick C | Zach A | SpagooliDude | Andrew L | Justin H | Alyssa R | jgprinters | Rob K | Justin C | Jess B | Matt H | bsushi | sebsab | Lilie G | Ian L | Chris | Pat M | markh | Craig | Matt F | Sebastian V N | Joeri B | Maryanne D | SkinTightAlloy | Dennis C | Eliot O B | Shelly B | William L | Brendon T | Robert S | Murray | Trevor B | salutepeezy | Andrew D | David P | Alex M | Catherine O | Josh G | noname | Jason | Bede R | Mark O | Jeff C | Brett S | Inês G. | Kim M | Kamrin H | Minh T | Andrew D | Marxelle | Akira | Christopher B | Melimuffinpie | bolt | Scout W | Philip N★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Regrettably, Stephen and Brendon spend this extremely truncated episode discussing a solitary game due to a lack of time or planning. Even more regrettably, Stephen and Brendon spend their time after recording this extremely truncated episode wondering about what could have been had they prepared at a level matching their own individual and joint expectations regarding what goes into creating a quality podcast episode.Discussed: The end is never the end is never the end is never the end is never the end is never the end is Look it's hard to keep up the panache after so many cases. People expect me to stand up and point and yell like I did in my youth, but I've just seen and done so much. I'm tired. I'm allowed to take it easy every once in a while. It's not complacency, it's self-care. Just because I say the word "objection" at a reasonable volume doesn't mean I don't mean it.Discussed: Phoenix Wright: The Ace Attorney Trilogy, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, Golden Sun, Golden Sun: The Lost Age, Golden Sun: Dark Dawn---Find us everywhere: https://intothecast.onlineJoin the Discord: https://theworstgarbage.onlineFollow Stephen Hilger: https://twitter.com/StephenHilgerFollow Brendon Bigley: https://twitter.com/brendonbigley---Produced by AJ Fillari: https://twitter.com/ajfillariSeason 4 Cover Art by Scout Wilkinson: https://scoutwilkinson.myportfolio.com/---Join the Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/intothecastThanks to all of our amazing patrons! | Kyle B | Nick L | WallyWoo | Cody D | Alex Z | Miles L | Mark E | Sid T | Jeffrey A | Anthony L | Trevor S | Sebastian G | Jacob M | sourorrin | Andrew C | X L | fingerbelly | CJ M | Miles D | Dominic G | Macy P | Callie BD | Jesse Y | Callan C | Zachary M | Thomas B | Joseph D | JC G | Nigel B | Ryan R | Sasha M | Jake L | Cody G | Derek N | peppc | Sam B | Jesse W | Coco N | Ronan B | Julia B | Douglas W | Kaelan T | Honshew | Dan | Gregory | Austin K | Tony D | Mike T | no name | Espen S | Shaun K | Michael C | Maarten G | Paige A | Katie | The Family Computers | Pearson B | Anna E | Codes | Jim VDH | Matt B | Andy M P | Wesley | Logan W | Laslie C | Charlie D | Erik B | Heath S | Marc H | Connor S | Adam V | Ronin W | William W III | Jonathan B | Will N | Mike | Brandon T | Daniel R | Adam L | David H H | Nick V | Mike K | Eric A-F | Judith S | Alejandro M | Susannah G | Mush | Al F | Mick W | Keith S | Markus W | AggressiveToast | Liam R | Pippin N | Matt M | Minh N | jorgamund | Butterfly Bandit | Naman B | Gabe O | Josh H | Bellspr00ut | Kite | Doug | Lasse B | Retromation | John Thomas F | Juanda | Adam L | Geocracy | George L | b0rt | Elen R | David D | Casey D-VA | Zach B | Alex L | Connor C | Jeff N | Baker S | Daniel M | Adam S | Sergio L | Kyle S | ninjadeathdog | Sous Chef Russell | Greg | Zachary G | Adnan S | Celia S | Chris P | Lukerfuffle | David O | Kelly | Rory B | Adam V | JTH | David M | Varsha S | Stumpy J | Verlinp | Matthew W | Andy S | evie | A42PoundMoose | Sam T | Maxwell H | Robert M | Jonah K | Morgan M | Robb S | Owen P | Samuel H | Michael W | Andrew S | Tom | Mitchell J | Justin M | Will L | InterJustin | Evan H | Sam B | Robert O | Xavier K | Charlie E | Theresa N | Jamal M | Korey | Thomas W | Monte J | Liam M | Nick S | Jellums | Peter R | Jennifer S | Will H | Derek H | Brian D | Augusto D | Ethan K | Michael O | Brandon B | Peter H | Matt S | Albatross Soup | Noah H G | Christiaan S | Nick P | Ryan O | CosmicBluesMinis | Derek N | Megan T | Josiah R | Austin B | Kaija R | Khaleel G | Rowan | Sam S | Hunter F | Togame1 | JT | John H | Makenzie B | James O | SalivationArmy | Bishop_Tacos | Alex L | Dakota K | Ryan H | Blake M | Wanda S. | Scott T | Rachel L | Ian B | Onatah | Samuel H | Myles H | Wiley K | Moonstone5tella | garretsr | Eric D | Latte709 | Phillip F | Charles S | The WolfeKnight | Patrick M | Michael N | Brigitte L | Lee R | James Y | Reuben J | John C | Anisa | Maurice | Nick M | Trey L | Sam N | Madeleine | Randal S | Matthew M | leigha | Michael N | Connor | Garrett P | Justin W | Brendan K | Michaela | Adam G | Sebastian P | Júlía H | Marc | Christopher S | Alanna O | Scott R | Jackson F | Megan B | Erika Y | Christopher D | Matt D | Sebastian E | Liam B | Meredith | wreck | Daniel C | Coop | Brian M | Richie | Alexander M | Andrew K | Roc B | Alex G | Dan O | Laura W | Roberto S | Leo C | Wishbone | saddlebread | Roberge | Ian A | Max M | Michael V | Kyle R | Selina A | Noah O | Rich E | Michael G | Arcturus | Raihan S | Matthew M | Rowan S | Chris R | leastest | Kyle L | Anthony G | Adam | The Binding of Andrew | Hepahe | Jake L | Conor P | Cory F | Luke L | Matt C | Cian | John J P | GJ C | Mr Mallard | Sarah G | Vanessa J | Jack F | Kelsey J | Chase A | Elyse H | Anna | Nick Q | Tom H | Wes K | Erica S | Maria D | Chris M | RB | Jared B | Toots M | Aaron D | David C | Karen H | Walter N B | Kristin T | Joseph P | Tom W | Chad W | Chy J-B | Michaela W | Ryan W | Adam F | Scott H | Denys T | Lauren H | Andrew M | Alexander St. P | Griffin F | Ben G | killian | Therese K | Matthew V | Nick C | Zach A | SpagooliDude | Andrew L | Justin H | Alyssa R | jgprinters | Rob K | Justin C | Jess B | Matt H | bsushi | sebsab | Lilie G | Ian L | Chris | Pat M | markh | Craig | Matt F | Sebastian V N | Joeri B | Maryanne D | SkinTightAlloy | Dennis C | Eliot O B | Shelly B | William L | Brendon T | Robert S | Murray | Trevor B | salutepeezy | Andrew D | David P | Alex M | Catherine O | Josh G | noname | Jason | Bede R | Mark O | Jeff C | Brett S | Inês G. | Kim M | Kamrin H | Minh T | Andrew D | Marxelle | Akira | Christopher B | Melimuffinpie | bolt | Scout W | Philip N★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Dr. Dr. Tanzi received his B.S. (microbiology) and B.A. (history) at the University of Rochester in 1980 and his Ph.D. (neurobiology) at Harvard Medical School in 1990. Dr. Tanzi was a key member of the teams that discovered the first Alzheimer's disease (AD) gene, the amyloid precursor protein (APP) gene, and the two other early-onset familial AD genes, presenilin 1 and presenilin 2. As leader of the Cure Alzheimer's Fund Alzheimer's Genome Project, Dr. Tanzi identified several other AD genes, including CD33, the first AD gene shown to regulate neuroinflammation in AD. He also discovered the Wilson's disease gene and several other neurological disease genes. Dr. Tanzi's team was the first to use human stem cells to create three-dimensional mini human brain organoids of AD, dubbed “Alzheimer's-in-a-Dish”. This model was the first to recapitulate all three key AD pathological hallmarks. He and his team have successfully used these organoids to screen for approved drugs and natural products that can stop AD brain pathology. Dr. Tanzi has developed several novel therapies for AD including gamma secretase modulators targeting amyloid pathology (Phase 1 planned 2021) and AMX0035, which was already successful in a clinical trial of ALS and now under priority review for approval at the FDA. Dr. Tanzi also discovered that beta-amyloid plays a functional role in the brain as an anti-microbial peptide, supporting a potential role for infection in the etiology of AD. Dr. Tanzi serves as Chair of the Cure Alzheimer's Fund Research Leadership Group and on numerous scientific advisory and editorial boards. He has published over 600 research papers and is one of the top 50 most cited neuroscientists in the world. He has received the highest awards in his field, including the Metropolitan Life Foundation Award, Potamkin Prize, Ronald Reagan Award, Oneness in Humanity Award, Silver Innovator Award, the Smithsonian American Ingenuity Award, the Brain Research Foundation Award, and the Kary Mullis Award for Medical Research. He has also been named to TIME magazine's list of TIME100 Most Influential People in the World. Dr. Tanzi is also a New York Times bestselling author, who has co-authored the books Decoding Darkness, and bestsellers, Super Brain, Super Genes, and The Healing Self. Dr. Tanzi joins us to mark The One Way Ticket Show's 10th anniversary for our special series--a “one way ticket to optimal mental, physical and spiritual well-being”. On this episode of the program, Dr. Tanzi's conversation with Host Steven Shalowitz includes why today is rapidly becoming the golden age for solving age related brain diseases, lifestyle changes we can make to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's and questions around the brain-consciousness connection. Dr. Tanzi is just one of the engaging personalities featured on The One Way Ticket Show. During the regular season of the program, Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guests where they would go if given a one way ticket, no coming back. Their destinations may be in the past, present, future, real, imaginary or a state of mind. Steven's guests have included: Nobel Peace Prize Winner, President Jose Ramos-Horta; Legendary Talk Show Host, Dick Cavett; Law Professor, Alan Dershowitz; Fashion Expert, Tim Gunn; Broadcast Legend, Charles Osgood; International Rescue Committee President & CEO, David Miliband; Former Senator, Joe Lieberman; Playwright, David Henry Hwang; Journalist-Humorist-Actor, Mo Rocca; SkyBridge Capital Founder & Co-Managing Partner, Anthony Scaramucci; Abercrombie & Kent Founder, Geoffrey Kent; Travel Expert, Pauline Frommer, as well as leading photographers, artists, chefs, writers, intellectuals, etc.
