In the Intro to this episode, you'll hear Steven Petrow talking about his sister Julie Petrow's death last June 2023. After years of battling ovarian cancer, Julie, Steven's five-years-younger little sister, chose to die in her New Jersey home by drinking a lethal cocktail. She was surrounded by her family. And it was legal. She used a procedure called MAID or medical aid in dying, which is now legal in 10 states in the U.S. plus the district of Columbia. But before she died, she made Steven, who is a bestselling author and a contributing columnist for The Washington Post, promise to write about how she chose to die, in order to raise awareness around MAID, a practice that many people don't know about, or don't understand, even though it was first legalized in Oregon, almost 30 years ago. So Steven did, publishing an essay about Julie and her decision in The New York Times a few months ago. It got a huge reception with over 600 comments on the NYT's site. In this episode, Steven explains more: What the term medical aid in dying means and what it is exactly (it used to be called physician assisted suicide, but a physician is NOT present)Why he thinks only 9,000 people have availed themselves of the procedure since it first became legalizedWhy it's mostly used by educated whites (for one thing, the cocktail of lethal drugs cost $700 to $900 and is NOT reimbursable)This is simply a fascinating episode and Steven is a lovely guest, eloquent, respectful, and informed. It was such a pleasure to have him back on the show. In this episode of Life Matters, Brian Johnston examines the pressure in 2024 to legalize assisted suicide nationwide in the United States. Many nations have now adopted assisted suicide throughout their borders, including Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, France, in many others. The American euthanasia movement had attempted to do this through the courts, but in 1994 the Glucksberg decision by the United States Supreme Court announced there was no national “legal right” to be killed by medicine. In spring of 2024, there are 10 states that have legalized medical killing, plus the District of Columbia. There are another fourteen states that have now introduced measures for this year's legislative session. But this belies the long-term methods, the actual approach that euthanasia advocates are taking. Initially, they propose safeguards and limits on a measure to help it get through the legislative process and legalized.  But then they “adjust” the parameters of the law. One of the most common limits is to initially say it is only for residents of their state.  This is in order to prevent what is happening in Switzerland, where tourist suicide allows people to fly in and simply be killed in any of dozens of death centers established in Switzerland. Many states that had put safeguards, like the need for multiple doctors to agree, or the need to be a state resident, or the need to be personally present with the physician (many drugs are now being prescribed via Zoom); all of those “safeguards” are now being removed. And there is concerted effort in the media, and by agent provocateur, to encourage those who are medically and emotionally vulnerable to receive their poison pills across state line via Zoom, or to travel to states where their lies will be brought to a swift and immediate end .  What all of this means is that we, as individuals. must be extremely attentive to our elderly and dependent relatives. We must ensure that, if they are in any long-term care facilities, proper emotional and medical attention is paid to them. This can only be done by personal involvement. It can't be done from afar Just as in older cultures, it is the family, and our immediate involvement with family, that is the greatest safeguard in a confused and dying civilization willing to kill the isolated vulnerable.

If you are considering suicide, not medical aid in dying to ease physical suffering, please call 988 to speak with someone.Listen to the excerpts from the American Public Health Association journal article entitled "Patients' Right to Self-Determination at the End of Life" in 2008. The Oregon Model was enacted first in 1997 but it took 10 years in court, going all the way to the Supreme Court, to become what we now know as the Oregon Death with Dignity Act (DDA). Dr. Kevorkian, a doctor in the 1980s, wanted to help his patients die. Unfortunately, there was no law in place and his practices were sometimes unethical, and he eventually was convicted of murder in 1987. Since that time, physicians wanting to help their patients carry out their wish to die and end their suffering have had few legal options. That's changing. In 10 U.S. states, patients can legally end their own life. oregon.gov Death with Dignity Act FAQdeathwithdignity.orghttps://bentley.umich.edu learn more about Dr. Jack KevorkianListen and read my blog: https://whilewerestillhere.com and https://grimtea.comStarting with Episode 56, the episode music was added. A pro-life legal battle is underway -- this one at the end of lives. A new state law in New Mexico not only permits physician-assisted suicide, it requires all doctors to share information about physician-assisted suicide. If they do not, doctors opposed to promoting ending lives early can face civil and criminal penalties and risk the loss of their medical licenses. This interferes with their professional judgment for the doctor-patient relationship. The law provides no exceptions for ethical, medical or religious reasons. The Alliance Defending Freedom brought a First-Amendment lawsuit on behalf of a Christian physicians association and a Christian dentists group. Lathan Watts, vice president for public affairs at A.D.F., tells us how this case addresses sanctity of life, freedom of religion, and freedom of speech.

By Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com) Iranian protestors set fire to the late Ayatollah Khomeini's home On November 17th, Iranian protesters set fire to the childhood home of the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Iran's Islamic Republic's founder, reported International Christian Concern. This serves as a symbol of the protester's resistance to the Islamic republic itself. The home has been a museum for the past 30 years since Khomeini's death in 1989, and yet officials in Iran deny the fire even occurred altogether despite video evidence of the event. Hundreds of protestors have died since the death of a woman in September who was detained by police for allegedly breaking the regime's strict dress code. Christians in Iran have been suppressed, imprisoned, tortured, and killed while under the radical Islamic Regime in Iran. International Christian Concern dubbed Ali Khamenei, the Persecutor of the Year.  Ex-trans Navy SEAL: Trans craze is “killing these kids" A former member of SEAL Team Six who famously presented himself as a woman a decade ago, and who has since “detransitioned,” is speaking out about the dangers of transgender ideology, manipulation by its proponents, and the grave harm it is doing to children and young people, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Chris Beck, who for a time was known as “Kristen,” recounted, in a wide-ranging two-hour interview with conservative commentator Robby Starbuck, how he was used by medical experts and the media to advance the narrative that only “gender-affirming” treatments are valid for persons, including young kids, who display even the most minute sign of gender dysphoria. Beck described those who embrace and promote transgender ideology as a “cult” that brings people into the fold through “love bombing” and propagandizing. Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.” Christian teacher forced to resign over fake pronouns A Christian teacher who was forced to resign for declining to use the fake names of trans-identifying students is suing the school district, claiming it violated her free speech and religious liberty rights under the U.S. Constitution, reports Christian Headlines. Vivian Geraghty served as an English teacher at Jackson Memorial Middle School in Massillon, Ohio, until two students on August 26 of this year asked her to begin using new names that aligned with their new fake gender identities, according to the lawsuit. One of the students also asked Geraghty to use incorrect pronouns. She told school administrators that her Christian faith prohibited her from “lying” to the students about who they are. She was willing to use the student's last names. The Christian English teacher told her school principal of her concerns at 9:30 a.m. on August 26. School administrators allegedly told Geraghty she “would be required to put her beliefs aside as a public servant.” By 11:30 a.m., she had been forced to resign and had been escorted out of the building. Alliance Defending Freedom, which is representing the teacher, said, “The Constitution protects this freedom to differ, in part, by prohibiting the government from adopting and enforcing a set of approved views on these matters in America's public schools. The very nature of free speech, free exercise of religion, and freedom from state-enforced orthodoxy on fundamental matters condemns the state's attempt to purge contrary views from its schools.” Doctor sues New Mexico over physician-assisted suicide law A doctor and a Christian medical group have filed a lawsuit against New Mexico over an assisted suicide law passed last year they say violates their sincerely-held Biblical objections to the controversial practice, reports The Christian Post. Dr. Mark Lacy and the Christian Medical & Dental Association filed a lawsuit against New Mexico last Wednesday in the United States District Court for the District of New Mexico. Defendants named in the suit include the state's Attorney General Hector Balderas, Department of Health Acting Secretary Dr. David Scrase, and members of the state Medical Board. At issue was the Elizabeth Whitefield End-of-Life Options Act, a law passed last year that legalized assisted suicide for terminally ill residents of New Mexico. The lawsuit argues that the law does not adequately protect the conscientious objection rights of medical professionals opposed to participating in the killing of patients before natural death. It adds that the Act “compels objecting physicians to speak and inform terminally ill patients about the availability of assisted suicide.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Monday, December 19th, in the year of our Lord 2022. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. Extra Print Story Vatican dismisses Father Frank Pavone from priesthood Father Frank Pavone, a well-known pro-life activist and national director of Priests for Life, has been dismissed from the clerical state for “blasphemous communications on social media” and “persistent disobedience of the lawful instructions of his diocesan bishop.” In a Twitter post in 2020, Pavone spoke of "supporters of this loser Biden and his morally corrupt, America-hating, God-hating Democrat party.”  One of the adjectives to define Biden, which The Worldview deleted, was blasphemous. In a Dec. 13 letter to U.S. bishops obtained by the Catholic News Agency and confirmed by multiple sources as authentic, Archbishop Christophe Pierre, the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, wrote that the decision on November 9 had “no possibility of appeal.” In one statement, the Vatican said, “Father Pavone was given ample opportunity to defend himself in the canonical proceedings, and he was also given multiple opportunities to submit himself to the authority of his diocesan bishop. It was determined that Father Pavone had no reasonable justification for his actions.” On Saturday, Pavone tweeted, “So, in every profession, including the priesthood, if you defend the unborn, you will be treated like them! The only difference is that when we are ‘aborted,' we continue to speak, loud and clear.” Proverbs 31:8 declares, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.”

After being diagnosed with terminal cancer, Brittany Maynard moved to Oregon, then (2014) one of only four states with legalized physician assisted suicide. She was a big activist for legalizing suicide for terminal patients, allowing them to "die on their own terms". In this class, we take a deep dive into the traditional sources on suicide and physician assisted suicide across many texts in the written and oral law, discussing such questions as: Is there any allowance for suicide in the Torah? What is the Torah's perspective on pain and pain management? Are we obligated to treat every disease or can we let it run its course? What is the Torah's perspective on "quality of life" vs. life itself? Happy Listening! This episode continues talking about the Historical Critical Method of Biblical Criticism, but with a focus on one of its sources: Modernism -- the first fruit of secular culture. In this episode we discuss many of the roots of Modernism, and also discuss its effects: Slavery, Racism, Eugenics, Ageism, Abortion, Physician-Assisted Suicide, etc. After this, we turn to talking about how Modernism is seen in the present-day Catholic Church, how much of the Church in the 1970's, 80's, and 90's (especially the clergy) turned a blind-eye to homosexuality and sexual immorality among their ranks and among the laity. We discuss the delusional aura of "do what you feel," and (today) "how you feel is what you are." We also discuss how acceptance of these philosophical stances towards sexuality in general has lead to homosexuality, polyamory, and transgenderism. In this episode, Nathan and Cameron consider some of the longterm consequences of the modern infatuation with radical freedom and autonomy, and consider how we as the church can respond. America has been grappling with suicide for decades. The anti-life logic of Roe v. Wade in 1973 made it inevitable that suicide, and the effort to legalize suicide, would join abortion as a major national issue. Although the Supreme Court, thankfully, ruled 9-0 in the 1997 case Washington v. Glucksberg that the Constitution contains no right to assisted suicide—the Court in essence punted the issue to the states, allowing assisted suicide to be imposed on the state level. So although the Court saved us in 1997 from a Roe v. Wade style national imposition of assisted suicide, the Court did not find that the Constitution is incompatible with the injustice of suicide and suicide assistance. What has taken place over quarter century since that 1997 case is a slow but steady increase in states permitting suicide assistance—most commonly through what is termed “physician assisted suicide”. Dr. Jeffrey J. Barrows joins us today to speak about physician assisted suicide, why suicide prevention (rather than assistance) is at the heart of good medicine, and how to respond hopefully and positively to the challenges of life. On the last episode of the season, Dr. Daniel Bubb shares a very personal account of what it was like to lose his father to stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He addresses some of the reasons why the "Death with Dignity" bill should have been passed here in Nevada. It is a bill that would allow competent adults with a terminal illness to request a prescription that would allow them to end their life at the place and time of their choosing. Dr. Bubb also shares some backlash the bill faced from religious groups/organizations, and we compare human euthanasia to animal euthanasia. This episode is in loving memory of Ken Bubb.
