On Sunday, February 9th, the ISTAF Indoor Meeting in Dusseldorf Germany will use the new Take off Zone in the Women's Long Jump for the first time. This new change was very controversial and criticized by most long jumpers when first announced in 2024. So what is this new format and why have athletes been critical? This week Bob and I wrap up our lager kick for now as we discuss the German Pilsner. Quite possibly the most iconic beer style in modern history, the pilsner captured the attention of beer drinkers across the world and inspired a myriad of regional imitations. This lightly colored, exquisitely balanced lager remains one of the most loved beers to enjoy, and one of the most challenging for the brewer to create. Pilsner is characteristically light in color and have a very short finish. The world over, pilsner -style lagers have become the standard beer for many reasons, and American craft brewers have worked hard to put their own unique spin on this classic German beer. A classic German-style pilsner is straw to pale in color with a malty sweetness that can be perceived in aroma and flavor. Perception of hop bitterness is medium to high. Noble-type hop aroma and flavor are moderate and quite obvious. Distinctly different from the Bohemian-style pilsner, this style is lighter in color and body and has a lower perceived hop bitterness. ABV: 4.4 – 5.2% IBUs: 22-40 Color: 2-4 Serving Temp: For most lagers and pilsners, 38 degrees is ideally your low point. Anywhere up to the low-to-mid 40s is fair game. “[Pilsners] are more traditionally [served at] 38 degrees, and are probably best suited there. Serving Pressure: 11-16PSI Examples of this style: 1. Pauliner – Pils 2. Wooly Pig– Keller Pils 3. Lager Heads – Tacklebox Pilsner Drink representative selection of the week: Maize Valley German Style Pilsner 5.2% ABV and 30 IBU Beer as described by brewer: Brewed with pilsner malts from Dusseldorf Germany accompanied by a touch of carafoam and wheat malts for head retention and foam stability. The malt profile is light, clean and crisp with hints of breadiness while teetnang and perle hops lend a floral and citrusy hop character. In this episode, Jeannette speaks to Carolin-Marie Roth who has had an incredible career including TV presenting, teaching yoga, property, charity work and more. They talk about childhood, relationships, business ventures and what it means to be a woman in the business world. Listen in today for a unique insight into Carolin’s life journey so far, it’s a very engaging episode sprinkled with humour throughout! KEY TAKEAWAYS Carolin had a difficult childhood which made her resourceful from an early age. She found it created her to have dominant ‘survival’ skills which has been both a blessing and a curse as an adult. At 15 she moved from Germany to America to live with her uncle and her school career really turned around and built her confidence tremendously. Carolin has found the lack of sisterhood through her career disappointing. But she has raised three incredibly strong, feminist daughters and has really emphasised to them that supporting each other is essential. Carolin admits herself that she has struggled with confidence but she has always had the ‘boldness’ to create opportunities for herself. It’s her tenacity that enabled her to get her first break in the television world. Whilst Carolin enjoyed working as a presenter she never felt like it was her ‘destiny’. Carolin didn’t think she would be able to have children so when she found out she was pregnant it felt like no big loss to her to give up her presenting career. She feels incredibly blessed for all of her children. After the birth of her third child Carolin moved to London in the UK and her and her partner set up their own TV Production company. After selling the company Carolin became a Yoga Teacher, a life-long passion of hers. She has been practicing Yoga for over 40 years! Carolin and her husband set up a charity called My Life Films which has won several awards. The basis of the charity is that they produce films for people living with dementia. These films are for free and can change the life of the family and the person living with dementia. Everything Carolin does involves creativity, passion and love. She thinks this is partly because of how she views the world. She finds structure difficult but when it comes to ‘thinking outside the box’ she truly blossoms. BEST MOMENTS “From the outside, everything was sparkling and beautiful but inside it was a disaster” “What did Karl Lagerfeld tell you about sex then Carolin?!” “I love be brave, bold and brilliant…I love that this is the title of the podcast” “It’s rare that I have to eat my words” “Often as women we don’t celebrate our successes…you probably don’t see yourself in the same way other people see you” “We changed the life of lots of people and this is a lovely thought” VALUABLE RESOURCES Brave, Bold, Brilliant podcast series Carolin’s Website My Life Films Dementia Charity ABOUT THE GUEST Carolin-Marie Roth was born in Dusseldorf Germany in the late 50’s. Wouldn't you know it - my job has taken me to yet another country! This time I find myself in Dusseldorf, Germany. Listen now to find out why I needed to jump on another plane to Europe for my role.
The US is very concerned these days with the balance of trade. But the US has successfully exported one thing more than any other country on earth. It has exported elements of its culture world-wide. I’ve traveled all over the world and heard American music. I’ll never forget the day I was in Dusseldorf Germany. In the central square was a guy with blond hair, a guitar and a cowboy hat. He had the leather vest, the glasses, everything. He was singing one John Denver tune after another. He looked and sounded exactly like John Denver. Except he didn’t speak a word of English. I’ve heard American music in small family run restaurants in Japan and Taiwan. American fashion has been exported to all corners of the globe. It started in the 1960’s with denim jeans. The latest thing to be exported to China is American design in senior living, of course, adapted to the unique needs of the Chinese market. Even the concept of senior living communities, whether they be independent living, assisted living, or skilled nursing, the concept originated in the US. If you look through most parts of Europe, Asia, the Middle East, multi-generational housing is the norm. Kids take care of aging parents. In particular, single income households made this the norm. As the societal changes have taken place first in North America, then Europe and now increasingly in Asia, most households are dual income households. There isn’t the flexibility for one member of the family nucleus to remain at home and care for aging parents. The entire senior housing industry owes its existence to the shift from single income to dual income households. We now take senior housing for granted as part of the societal norm in North America. But it’s relatively new elsewhere. For example, the cost of a paid full-time in-house care-giver is very high in North America. Enabling a senior citizen to remain in their own home with help is by far the preferred solution. But when the labor cost is high, it makes senior housing seem like a relative bargain, even though this too can be expensive compared with just renting an apartment. Several premier US architecture firms are taking part in exporting the senior living concept around the world. The more ambitious Chinese senior communities are giant resort-style campuses, connected by a centralized, amenity-rich building offering near-seamless integration between interiors and exteriors. Los Angeles-based architecture firm Steinberg Hart is another active firm in the Chinese market. The firm has designed over 10.6 million square feet of senior housing in China since opening an office in Shanghai in 2000. But not everything American is the way to go. When we spend time in Europe we love the community feel that is at the heart of virtually every town in Europe regardless of size. People live, work, dine and shop in walkable neighborhoods. I love the feel of these communities. It exists in the smallest villages of a few hundred people, or in cities of millions. In response to this, many new development projects in North America have embraced the mixed use concept with planned retail, residential, hospitality, office and dining all within a walkable distance. The most famous of these trend setting communities was Santana Row in San Jose California. The success of that project spawned numerous projects around North America that attempted to recreate that town center feeling. Today you see town center projects like this in communities like Plano Texas, West Palm Beach Florida, and more recently in my home town of Ottawa Canada. They lack the centuries of history around a medieval town square. But they are often able to recreate the vibrancy and sense of community that many sterile American cities have lost. This blending of culture is the result of globalization, but not in the sense of trade. It’s the result of the exchange of ideas.

You know the TV show Hockey Wives? It features a rotating cast of 7 or 8 hockey wives, their family life and struggles with players going on the road, managing on their own - and the pressures - yes there are pressures - of trying to live a normal life on a planet revolving around hockey. I watched season 1 of Hockey Wives. I Pvr'd season 2 and didn't get into season 3. Then I realized i had a podcast and said - hey... i know a hockey wife. Back in 2006 when Brandon Reid played for the Manitoba Moose, he would pop by the radio station i was working at. I met once sat beside his future wife while getting a pedicure, and if youre asking why I was getting a pedicure - it's because i took my soccer playing seriously. way too seriously. Fast forward to today, and the two of them got married, and Brandon's career went from the Vancouver Canucks, to Dusseldorf Germany, to the Swiss League, to Hamburg, then the lucrative KHL where a career ending injury had Brandon entering the coaching ranks. In that time, Jessica was - a hockey wife, but you might know her as a freelance writer having her works appear in MacLeans, the CBC, the National Post and countless others. she's written about being a hockey wive, a vegan, and most recently about the treatment of animals. I spoke to her in between her daughter's naps from her summer residence in Montreal's Le Plateau.
