(It'll all become clear in the episode.) We discuss the ethical implications of AI in enhancing human capabilities versus diminishing them, particularly for students. We also delve into the relationship between Freudian language theory and modern AI. Despite its current limitations, there's also a very interesting potential for AI use in historical martial arts research, where we could use it to provide new insights without modern biases. Don't worry, there'll be plenty of swordy stuff mixed in with the AI! Marc is also a practicing historical martial artist, and we connected over Capoferro's theory of tempo.

Global Investors: Foreign Investing In US Real Estate with Charles Carillo
In this episode of the Global Investors Podcast, Charles Carillo sits down with Ray Heimann, founder of Terra Capital, to break down the sub-institutional multifamily strategy — a segment of the market that's too small for large private equity firms but often too complex for mom-and-pop operators. Ray explains how his team targets sub-50 to sub-200 unit properties, sources deals direct-to-seller, executes heavy value-add renovations, and uses scattered-site property management to institutionalize small multifamily portfolios at scale. This conversation is a deep dive into: Why institutions can't compete in this segment How off-market sourcing creates an edge What most value-add investors underestimate Why operations and property management drive returns more than acquisitions How to think about recession-resilient Midwest markets If you're an operator, LP, or serious multifamily investor looking beyond crowded institutional deals, this episode will challenge how you think about scale, competition, and long-term returns. In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Chris Heimann, a theatre director, educator, and former leader of the improvisation curriculum at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. For nearly two decades, Chris has guided actors, leaders, and teams to cultivate presence, spontaneity, and embodied awareness — using improvisation as a pathway into deeper human connection and creative agency.Together, we explore what it means to work with what you've got, how play shapes our creativity, and why presence is perhaps the most powerful skill we have in a world that constantly pulls us away from the current moment. The conversation moves from childhood impulses to leadership, from somatic intelligence to curiosity, and from friction to flow. Chris and I reflect on improvisation as a form of research — a way to understand ourselves, each other, and the stories we co-create.How creative play can lead us to greater awarenessWhy presence is a leadership skillThe promise of any given momentWhy improvisation begins with “working with what you've got”Somatic intelligence and speaking through the bodyNavigating uncertainty: the art of letting goHow “yes, and…” can shift collaboration and leadershipThe difference between performing and researching through playSimple practices to cultivate presence in everyday lifeAbout ChrisDr. Chris Heimann led the improvisation curriculum at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) for 19 years, teaching actors including Cynthia Erivo, Taron Egerton, Amy Lou Wood, and Marisa Abela. He is a two-time Fringe First Award–winning theatre director, and has spent 20 years coaching leaders and teams on communication, collaboration, creativity, and leadership. Chris is now based in Berlin, where he works through his company Spacecraft, helping individuals and organizations cultivate presence, awareness, and creative leadership.WebsiteLinkedIn

“I think that the comparison [between political and erotic passions] is related to the danger of transgressing boundaries from the side of the analyst. It's not totally the same, but it's because of the emotions and the danger of being too much involved as an analyst, if you don't pay attention to what is happening in ourselves with our own emotions, then it can be similar. I think both are important for the psychoanalytic process, to see it as a real relationship - there is this setting where two people in the room meet. They are real persons, but at the same time, a kind of dramatic play fantasy creation coming up from fantasies of the patient, and our own reactions as analysts come into play and gradually just build up the story that is mainly related to the patient's biography, the patient's relationships, and what's going on in her or his life at the moment, but now in relation with us.” Episode Description: We recognize the passionate political world we are living in and the challenges it introduces into the psychoanalytic relationship. Such moments of intense personal conviction challenge the clinician's capacity to hold those convictions, allow the same for the analysand and still locate an analytic surface with which to find additional meanings. Heribert feels that this creates opportunities for intensity akin to "erotic-sexual impulses." He discusses clinical encounters that include his "revealing my assessment of reality" as an aspect of his authentic self living in relation to the patient. He presents the case of a young man whose effort to locate his analyst's "soft spot" entailed provoking him with his idealization of Hitler. Unlike the patient's father who turned away from him at such times, his analyst tolerated "my required countertransference" which enabled the patient to recognize and tolerate his tender longings that had lived disguised in his sado-masochistic preoccupations. We close with Heribert, the new IPA president, sharing his vision of psychoanalysis having a presence beyond the couch in universities and the community at large. Our Guest: Heribert Blass, Dr. Med. (MD), Psychoanalyst and training analyst for adults, children and adolescents, member of the German Psychoanalytic Association and IPA (DPV/IPA), also specialist of psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy, psychiatry, working in private practice in Düsseldorf, Germany. Since August 2025 President of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA). From 2020 to 20204 President of the European Psychoanalytical Federation (EPF). He has published on the image of the father, male identity and sexuality, gender dysphoria and transidentities, aspects of thought function in the psychoanalytic process and in the institution, psychoanalytic supervision, psychoanalysis in society and as editor of a book on Time and the Experience of Time (first in German, the English publication will follow soon) about the exchange of psychoanalysis with other sciences. Charlotte Heimann was last seen in Rochester, New York, on October 28, 1981, a date that would mark the beginning of a troubling mystery. At that time, Charlotte was on the verge of completing her PhD at the University of Rochester School of Medicine, a significant milestone in her academic journey. However, her life took a drastic turn when she sought refuge in the hospital, prompted by fears of an unidentified man who had been troubling her. A nurse at the facility informed Charlotte's mother that she had voluntarily admitted herself for a psychiatric evaluation, knowing that the hospital would be required to keep her for a minimum of 72 hours. This decision, made out of desperation, was a reflection of her state of mind and the urgency of her situation. As the days passed, Charlotte's anxiety grew, particularly as her discharge approached. On the day she was set to leave the hospital, the same nurse mentioned that a man had come inquiring about her. Charlotte confided in the nurse about her apprehensions, expressing her fear that this man would be waiting for her upon her return home. Despite her desire to leave the hospital, the looming threat of this mysterious figure cast a shadow over her thoughts. Tragically, this would be the last known interaction anyone had with Charlotte, as she vanished shortly after her release. In the aftermath of her disappearance, authorities were reluctant to file a missing person report, dismissing her case initially. It wasn't until November 25, 1981, nearly a month later, that Charlotte was officially reported missing. This delay in action only deepened the concerns of her family and friends, who were left grappling with uncertainty and fear. The circumstances surrounding her last known moments remain shrouded in mystery, leaving a haunting question: what truly happened to Charlotte Heimann?Tonight we are joined by her granddaughter Shyla who is desperate for answer for her family.#podcast #crime #truecrimecommunity #missingperson #missing #coldcase #interview #Maine #Rochester #NY #CharlotteHeimann

In April 2001, Jerry Heimann's son, Greg, had come to Washington State to visit his father. When his father didn't pick him up from the airport, he grew concerned. When he arrived at his father's home, and there was no answer, he broke into the house. Jerry wasn't there, and neither were most of Jerry's belongings. As he made his way into the dining room, he found an 89-year-old grandmother, Evelyn, and an Alzheimer's patient slumped in her wheelchair. She had been left alone, starving. Greg called 911.When police asked the neighbors if they had seen Jerry, they said they hadn't seen anyone at the residence after the live-in housekeeper and elder helper, Barbara Opel, had backed a U-Haul into Jerry's driveway, packed it full of things from Jerry's house, and left. Soon, police knocked on Barbara Opel's hotel room door, asking her, her children, and their friends to come down to the station to answer some questions about the whereabouts of her employer, 64-year-old Jerry Heimann. Barbara spun a story of how Jerry was dying of terminal prostate cancer, and he was just finished with this world. He'd given her all his earthly possessions, and she had no idea where he was. Nobody else talked to the police. They did not betray Barbara. But eleven-year-old Derek did. When the police asked him if he knew where Jerry was, he simply said, “Yes. He's dead.”Join Cam and Jen as they discuss. "Mommy Dearest: The Murder of Jerry Heiman"Thank you to YA-MAN USA for sponsoring this week's episode.
