Lots of love for Jrue Holiday. 17:58 ... Arsalan explains how Jaylen Brown emulated a character in the old He-Man cartoons 19:42 ... Holiday was the "Third J," and the 48 Minutes podcast played a major role in setting the stage for Holiday to join the Celtics when Giannis Antetokounmpo challenged the Bucks to make a big move. 21:50 ... Many said that Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown would never be a great fit as teammates, but they have cracked the code and created an incredible partnership as virtual co-equals. 30:32 ... Bruce dubbed Holiday and Derrick White "The Wardens" because they "lock up" opposing players. Are they reminiscent of former Celtic legend Dennis Johnson? Our crew has great appreciation for both of The Wardens for so many reasons. 38:47 ... Every dentist in Boston should offer to fix Derrick White's teeth for free over the summer 39:23 ... Arsalan Khan is Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Arsalan Khan comes on The Pakistan Experience to discuss his book on the Tablighi Jamaat of PAkistan, "The Promise of Piety". On this week's episode we discuss Colonialism, Religion, The Tablighi Jamaat, Maulana Tariq Jameel, TLP, Taliban, Revivalist Movements and the importance of rituals. In The Promise of Piety, Arsalan Khan examines the zealous commitment to a distinct form of face-to-face preaching (dawat) among Pakistani Tablighis, practitioners of the transnational Islamic piety movement the Tablighi Jamaat. This group says that Muslims have abandoned their religious duties for worldly pursuits, creating a state of moral chaos apparent in the breakdown of relationships in the family, nation, and global Islamic community. Tablighis insist that this dire situation can only be remedied by drawing Muslims back to Islam through dawat, which they regard as the sacred means for spreading Islamic virtue. In a country founded in the name of Muslim identity and where Islam is ubiquitous in public life, the Tablighi claim that Pakistani Muslims have abandoned Islam is particularly striking. The Promise of Piety shows how Tablighis constitute a distinct form of pious relationality in the ritual processes and everyday practices of dawat and how pious relationality serves as a basis for transforming domestic and public life. Khan explores both the promise and limits of the Tablighi project of creating an Islamic moral order that can transcend the political fragmentation and violence of life in postcolonial Pakistan. The Promise of Piety: Islam and the Politics of Moral Order in Pakistan (Cornell University Press, 2024) by Arsalan Khan is an incisive ethnographic study of Pakistan's Tablighi movement. This piety movement attracts Pakistani Muslim men across class, caste, and social contexts and as such Khan is particularly attuned and reflexive as he navigates the boundaries of this community. Khan theorizes the various modalities of relationality that mark this movement from its sonic and ritual dimensions, especially as it relates to dawat or preaching, to its kinship and ethical ones. Dawat is an analytical tool to map some of the ways in which piety and morality are cultivated in public, private, and domestic spheres by the men of the Tablighi movement. In the end, Tablighi's ethical worldviews unsettle liberal sensibilities and approaches to Islam (religion) and secularism (non-religion), modernity, sovereignty and much more. This book will be of interest to those think about South Asia, piety movements, anthropology of Islam, Islamic reformism, secularism, and politics and much more. Learn more about your ad choices. Special Guest: Dr. Arsalan Abtahi – Executive Chair, Symphony – Inclusive Sustainable Smart Cities and the Spatial Web #futureofai #smartcities by Denise Holt In this episode, we discuss Dr. Abtahi's background as a medical doctor and how it relates to his work on creating inclusive, sustainable, smart cities through his organization Symphony. He talks about the challenges of building such cities, including competition and silos that hinder interoperability. Dr. Abtahi also describes the four pillars of inclusive, sustainable smart cities: environmental sustainability, social inclusion and community resilience, intelligent and participatory governance, and inclusive economic development. Dr. Abtahi explains the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which are made up of 17 different indicators. He discusses how technology, such as AI and the spatial web, can be used to achieve these goals by automating processes and improving quality of life. Abtahi compares a city's lack of functional architecture to a human's subconscious mind that automates survival. He notes that technology can fill this gap by automating things like food production and energy production so that people can focus on intellectual pursuits instead of worrying about basic needs. We discuss the lack of infrastructure that can maximize interoperability between siloed systems and create a holistic understanding of what's happening. He explains how the spatial web is filling this gap by creating an extracellular matrix that connects everything together, similar to human cells. Dr. Abtahi emphasizes the importance of measuring data from sensors in cities to create a comprehensive digital twin ecosystem for better management through programmable equilibrium, reflecting how big data and AI tools enable data driven decision making for policy making instead of relying solely on people who are wiser or smarter. He also emphasizes the importance of prioritizing Africa and Latin America in addressing infrastructure issues and closing the digital divide through multidisciplinary collaborations. Finally, he highlights the need for a collective mission towards more inclusive, sustainable ecosystems and changing our perspective on identity as individuals within a larger system, recognizing our commonalities and breaking down silos between individuals rather than focusing on differences. Special thanks to Dr. Arsalan Abtahi, for being on our show! “The 10 pillars of life mastery is all about living consciously and sustainably, being conscious of all the pillars of your life, and not leaving anything behind. Because as soon as you leave these things behind, you start stressing yourself out,” explains Arsalan Al Hashimi, high performance master coach, serial entrepreneur, former professional athlete, and host of the Chronic Stress to Joy podcast. Today, he discusses his ascension method for learning and applying the 10 pillars of life mastery. High achiever types tend to push themselves to achieve at a very high level, which often leads to developing chronic stress. Arsalan himself burned out after running his last IronMan and realized he needed to make a change. As soon as he began dedicating himself to the pursuit of improving his health and reducing stress, he found that the result was more joy each day. Type A people tend to believe that if they keep pushing themselves they will finally be happy when they reach the top, but then they get to that pinnacle and find themselves more stressed than ever. Arsalan reverse engineered his 10 pillars of mastery and ascension method from his own experiences with chronic stress, focusing on teaching others how to live more consciously and sustainably. If you're a high achiever constantly pushing yourself to the next highest peak, you're likely to experience a lot of stress throughout your life. While some stress can be a good thing, chronic stress can cause a lot of issues, including contributing to physical and mental health conditions. To add more joy back into your life, you will need to surrender the need to force yourself into achieving more and more. Accept things as they come and let go of the stressors that keep joy at bay. Quotes: “The whole name, high performance master coach, was to attract my ideal client. But in reality, my ulterior motive is to spread more joy in the world.” (7:09-7:20 | Arsalan) “We've been promised so much joy when we get to the pinnacle, and now I'm here, and I'm more stressed out than ever.” (9:19-9:26 | Arsalan) “If it doesn't bring me joy, I will not do it. If I have to do it, I pass it on to somebody that enjoys it.” (12:10-12:17 | Arsalan) “I took all the steps I needed to kind of fight off chronic stress and come back to health. And then I realized that the result was more joy every day the more I worked on myself.” (15:50-16:03 | Arsalan) “The 10 pillars of life mastery is all about living consciously and sustainably, being conscious of all the pillars of your life and not leaving anything behind. Because as soon as you leave these things behind, you start stressing yourself out.” (16:11-16:24 | Arsalan) “We're all only 5% conscious. And if the 95%, there's a program in there that's working against your growth, against your intentions to be the best version of yourself, it doesn't matter what you do, you will always hit a wall.” (16:56-17:13 | Arsalan “If you calculate your life as a collection of choices and actually just spend a moment thinking about your choice, rather than quickly acting on it, the totality of your life can look very, very differently, and a lot less stressful.” (42:48-43:02 | Arsalan) Links: Mentioned in this episode: Learn more about Mike Horne on Linkedin Email Mike at mike@mike-horne.com Find more about Leading People and Culture with Authenticity Learn more about Arsalan Al Hashimi on Linkedin https://www.arsalan.co/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/arsalanalhashimi/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

In this episode of the Psychedelic Medicine Podcast, Dr. Arsalan Azam joins to discuss the potential of ketamine therapy for helping to address the stress of major life transitions. Dr. Azam is a board-certified Emergency Medicine physician and medical director of Daydream MD. He attended medical school as a Dean's Scholar at Case Western Medical School and completed his clinical rotations at the Cleveland Clinic. He has also worked as an emergency medicine physician around the country, including as a relief physician for hospitals impacted by staffing shortages. In this conversation, Dr. Azam shares patient experiences from his own ketamine practice and discusses the complexities of different approaches to ketamine treatment and different indications, including how some individuals may benefit especially from ketamine assisted therapy, while others may be well served by stand-alone ketamine infusions, especially considering the cost differential of these treatments. Additionally, Dr. Azam explores the role integration and peer support can play in the context of ketamine treatments, mentioning these may be less cost-prohibitive ways for patients to get the most out of their experiences. In this episode: The kinds of life transitions ketamine is helpful with in Dr. Azam's experience What kinds of patients Dr. Azam's practice serves The unique mechanism of ketamine Leveraging ketamine treatment to navigate breakups or professional transitions Ketamine assisted psychotherapy vs stand-alone ketamine infusions, and when having the extra support of therapy may be especially beneficial The role of integration and peer support in ketamine treatments The research into ketamine treatment for suicidal ideation How Dr. Azam sets up treatment programs for different kinds of patients Quotes: “The magic of this neurobiology is that, unlike our existing tools which take weeks to kick in often, this one works within hours. And so it really becomes more of a rescue medication or a supportive medication for these transitions of life that works quickly.” [8:32] “Think of our mind and our mental patterns as a piece of cold steel—and it's kind of locked in that structure, in that pattern. Psychedelics, like ketamine and others, can heat that steel up, and make it much more moldable and then when it cools back down it'll maintain a persistent new structure. So ketamine assisted therapy is a tool that helps us leverage that hot piece of steel to mold it into something else.” [11:56] “Ketamine works very quickly to reduce suicidal thinking and its degree of effect directly corresponds to the degree of symptoms. So someone who has really severe suicidality is more likely to experience a response to ketamine and is more likely to experience a significant response to ketamine.” [18:36] Links: Daydream MD website Daydream MD on Instagram Fireside Project website Psychedelic Medicine Association Porangui

China's detention of Uyghurs and other predominantly Muslim ethnic minorities in the north-western region of East Turkestan may amount to crimes against humanity, following the United Nations Human Rights office release of its long-awaited report on Wednesday titled "OHCHR Assessment of Human Rights Concerns in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region." The 45-page report, which is in PDF format, called on Beijing to immediately release all individuals deprived of Liberty to clarify the whereabouts of those whose families have been unable to locate them and to undertake a full review of its laws on domestic security and repeal all discriminatory laws. In response to the ruling of the report, during a discussion with Radio Islam International, Arslan Hidayat says that for the first time, the UN is taking a stance on what has been happening in it Turkestan, not to the level they would like to see because there have been other reports. An independent tribunal has said there is genocide and crimes against humanity in East Turkestan.

It was a great pleasure to be joined in the tortoise shack by Dr Arsalan Shahid. We discuss how he came from Pakistan to Ireland in 2016, had to give up his ambition to become a surgeon because of our non-training of immigrant doctors, was married in early 2020 and how now, after an earlier miscarriage, he and his lovely wife Namra Javed are due their first child any day now. All of this would be a time for celebration except the Irish state has refused a visa to Namra's mother a 3 month visa to help them after the birth of the baby. This is a cruel and ludicrous situation and we're urging you all to ask Minister Helen McEntee to intervene here. Join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack Note: The Sunday Special is live for members from 12 and will be on the patreon feed shortly afterwards.

In this week's edition of The Green Room, Deputy Editor of The Spectator's world edition Dominic Green and co-host Arsalan Mohammad take a look back half a century to 1971, a year currently being explored in a magnificent eight-part documentary series on Apple+ TV. Packed with archival music, contemporary news reports, voices from the mainstream and underground, the series is highly recommended. However, Dom and Arsalan soon veer off into a debate on nostalgia, the whys and wherefores of the corporatisation of rock music, the astonishing impact of Black artists such as Marvin Gaye, Sly Stone and James Brown versus the pomp-rock of bloated West Coast hippies like Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Should the supergroup concept ever have been taken seriously? And then, there's the mind-boggling question - would you let David Crosby father YOUR child?
