I've turned into a big travel snob. The idea of jetting off to Caribbean or Central America to sit at resort and drink all day feels very... dated. If there is one thing that Anthony Bourdain left behind, it is the idea that food can unite the planet, and being curious and uncomfortable about new thing is okay. I won't even start in on cruises. How they are still a thing after the pandemic is a miracle; or testimony to how lazy we have become as a species. The idea of being trapped on ship with American chefs cooking bad American food while on shore, the Italians have their pasta, and the Spanish their tapas. Alyson Shane loves to travel with her husband John. They have just completed their second trip through Thailand and their first through Japan. One of the things I noticed on her trip was how they made the effort to live (and eat) like a local. A lot of it comes down to where you leave your money behind. Is it a tourist trap? Are you staying at a hotel owned by a foreign corporation? Are you riding public transport? Did you go to Starbucks or the local cafe for your morning coffee? In this episode, Alyson and I swap stories about our recent trips and discuss some of the best ways to travel by living like a local. Christian Zyp is a host on Edmonton's CJSR's Moving Radio. But you're not listening to this episode for that. The story of our friendship begins on the radio in 1995 with the release of Van Halen's Balance CD. Back then radio stations were given advance copies and a "World Album Premiere". The special we ran only featured 9/11 songs on the CD. Where we the other two. Two drunk guys started calling me and asking why we had left two of the songs off and I said, "If you have some beer in the fridge I'll bring the CD over and we'll listen to it." What's a few brews between Van Halen fans? From there on, Garth Thatchuk and Christian Zyp became lifelong friends. Zyp started his radio career in 1998 as the host of the venerable Moving Radio on CJSR. But he is better known as a teacher, movie buff, music lover, soccer teammate, and overall great guy. The last time I saw him was in Edmonton in 2015. Life changed for him and his wife Trina 4 months later. You just skip over listening to the podcast and head straight to the blog page to read about Zyp's incredible story of battling back from the brink of death from contracting meningitis. This episode is dedicated to my good friend who reminds me to be thankful everyday and a reminder of the many ways radio creates friendships and bonds across the airwaves and beyond. Zyp and Trina are also responsible for kicking my ass and telling me to get going with a podcast back in November 2015. This episode does not have any discussion of breaks, bits, PPM numbers, digital anything, or workforce reductions. This is is the story community, friendship and gratitude. If you do get the chance, take the time to call someone you met along your radio journey, and see how they are doing. They would love to hear from you. Avery and I love Spain. A few years ago we went to Italy to get our first European experience as a couple and loved Rome and Tuscany. Italy showed us what can happen when fresh ingredients get involved. In 2018, we made our first trip to Spain and found that the Spanish lifestyle of socialization was a little more in line than what we have to deal with in North America. In our perfect world, we would rather go to 5 bars in over 5 nights and meet a few (sometimes new) people, rather than trying to everyone at once at one event on a weekend. The problem with that is it consumes your weekend. We went back to Spain the following year and travelled the north. After 4 weeks in Spain, we still feel we haven't seen everything. When there is nothing on TV, Avery and I watch James Blick's videos as he travels Spain sampling some of the best food in the world.  In this episode, I speak to James about his company Devour Tours, and how this Kiwi found to his to Spain to become one of Spain's biggest ambassadors to the Anglophone World. If you are planning a trip to Spain, subscribe to his YouTube channel and his Instagram to get you thinking about how you will spend your time when you get there. And food lovers, James and his team at Devour Tours are on lockdown like the rest of the planet - but that doesn't stop them from connecting you to the food. The company has put together a digital cookbook so you can enjoy Spanish cuisine in your kitchen. Devour Tours hosts events in a number of Spanish cities including Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, and San Sebastian, as well as other European destinations like London, Lisbon, Paris and Rome.  Finally, Avery and I have some personal suggestions that we loved and have shared on the blog page of this episode which you can find here. The Buffalo Bills have always been my team. It all started back in 1992 when 4 guys got into a car in Wolfville, Nova Scotia and drove 22 hours west to the AFC Championship game. What ensued was some sort of crazy "fandamonium" that had me wanting to go back. This was my introduction to the Bills Mafia.  After the Buffalo Bills lost their 4th Super Bowl, they returned to mediocrity; or sometimes worse. On New Year's Eve 2017 they qualified for the post season for the first time since 1999, breaking the longest playoff drought in the NFL. The Bills Mafia has always been there and has grown. I'd argue that no other brand on the planet that has been elevated so high because of social media.  Pat Moran is the host of the Moranalytics Podcast. Tara Holmes is back. She was a guest on episode 18 when she told us all about matchmaking. I also found out she has been spearheading a campaign to rid British Columbians from the evils of bi-annually setting clocks back and forth. I spoke to Tara all about how the campaign is going and I ask her why I should care about this. In an interesting twist of irony, this episode is being released during the extra hour of sleep we are scheduled to get.  Tara has been making the rounds in the media this week as she is a proponent of having her province remain on Daylight time throughout the year. Not a bad idea really. Until you factor in that California is considering doing the same but on "standard" time. Now there's an issue. And it's a really big issue of you are at Microsoft or Apple where software updates will have to come fast and furious to keep up with any legislation that gets passed. Where I live, a private member's bill was put forward (without proper consultation or forethought to the implications) to set Manitoba's time to standard time year round. A really bad idea given that Manitobans don't need a 4:19am sunrise in June, nor having to end their baseball or soccer activities before 8pm in May. See? It's complicated. Now that you have set your clocks back, you'll forget that there was ever an issue but Monday at noon and you'll resume your normal life.
