After ragging on people who surely don't deserve the veneration they receive from faithful Christians around the world, for their questionable morality, or even dubious historicity, it's time for us to look at a heptad of saints who are genuinely good role models--at least on the surface....For these saints (as opposed to Teresa of Calcutta), poverty was an obstacle to be overcome, rather than a virtue to perpetuate. We preach power through education, and so did these seven reasonably good saints.Angela Merici was a Venecian with no recorded miracles, but people insisted that she was a saint because of the work she did to support the public education of young people.Elizabeth Seton was a big fan of public education, and used her great fortune to support young people in their pursuit to better their lives. Seton was the first American Saint.Vincent de Paul has a wild story of slavery and alchemy, and he went on to do everything he could to raise people out of poverty, and support young people to get vocational training.Father Damien (Jozef de Veuster) was a servant of the people in a Hawaiian leper colony, where he gave his life in service of his fellow men.Katharine Drexel, the second American Saint, spent her fortune setting up schools for BIPOC students all over the United States of America.Elizabeth of Hungary was a princess with some wild and dubious miracles, but she spent her short life in her own hospital where she cared for the poor and the sick.John Bosco wrote an awful lot, but he also worked with young men to help get them reliable and profitable work. All this and more.... Support us on Patreon or you can get our merch at Spreadshop.Join the Community on Discord.Learn more great religion factoids on Facebook and Instagram.

Instead it offers a glimpse into the religious life of the atrium, a specially prepared place for children to live out their silent request: “Help me come closer to God by myself.” Here we can see the child's spiritual capabilities and perhaps even find in our own souls the child long burdened with religious information. This book serves as a companion to the second volume, The Religious Potential of the Child 6 to 12 Years Old. The desire to have this essential text available in audio has been a long-held goal for many. In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by the remarkable Sister Mary Ann Fatula, O.P. to talk about non-Catholic Christians who were converted, and then became saints, through the witness of the Eucharist and the Real Presence of Christ at Mass. These are some incredible stories of how real people encountered the theology of the Catholic Church – the belief that Jesus is really present at Mass – and decided to convert to Catholicism. We'll talk about the Eucharist in the Early Church Fathers, the witness of other Catholics and their reverence towards the Eucharist, and the power of the tenderness of the Eucharist in Adoration. And while these stories are like a lot of the conversion stories we feature on this podcast, these converts, like St. Elizabeth Seton and St. John Henry Newman, are now canonized saints! Check out Sister Mary Anne's book, The Wonders of the Mass and the Eucharist: Insights from the Saints, available now from Sophia Institute Press.Send your feedback to cordialcatholic@gmail.com. ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON l PATRON SAINT OF ALL CHILDREN NEAR DEATH Feast Day: January 4 Our saint for today was the first native born American to be canonized as saint of the Catholic Church. She was also the one who established the first religious order for women in the United States. Strange it may be, St. Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton was born into a prominent Episcopalian family on August 28, 1774 in New York City. Her father was a health officer in the city. When she was three years old, her mother, a daughter of a Protestant Episcopalian minister died. As a young girl, Elizabeth she was an avid reader of stories and novels. As she grew older, she became an ardent reader of the Bible. Although she belonged to a family of high social standing, she was simple, humble and quiet. The Bible became her source of instruction, support and consolation, especially due to the fact that she was inclined to contemplation. In 1794, Elizabeth married William Seton, a wealthy businessman. Being a young society matron, she happily served her family and took care of the poor and the needy. The first years of married life was prosperous and happy. But soon, William's father died leaving them seven half brothers and sisters to care for, and the management of the family business. The impact of what happened took a tool on William's health. He got sick of tuberculosis and gave up his business. They went on a trip to Italy, hoping to get cured. When they reached Livorno, William's illness became worse. He died in Italy in December 1803. Before returning to the United States, Elizabeth and her daughter, Anna Maria spent a few months in the house of their former business associates who introduced her to Catholicism. She was deeply impressed especially with the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. It was the strong force which attracted her to become a Catholic. She also felt great comfort to know that the Virgin Mary was truly her mother and asked Mary to guide her to the true faith. After a year of searching she finally embraced the Catholic faith. This decision caused her social discrimination since she had many Protestant friends. As a devoted Catholic, her favorite prayer was Psalm 23. She became deeply devoted to the Eucharist, to the Virgin Mary and the reading of Scriptures. Encouraged by some Catholic priests, in 1808, she moved with her family to Baltimore to open a school for girls. Catholic women came to join her. Soon they decided to establish a religious congregation. They moved to Emmitsburg, Maryland and formally started their religious life on July 31, 1809. They were called Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph, with Elizabeth Seton as superior, a duty which she held for 12 years. They adopted a Rule from the French Daughters of Charity based on the Rule of St. Vincent de Paul and it was approved by Archbishop John Carroll in 1812. The first Sisters made their religious profession on July 19, 1813. In 1814, they founded an orphanage in Philadelphia, then in New York by 1817. While she was at Emmitsburg, two of her daughters died of tuberculosis, and she herself was also attacked by the disease. She spent the rest of her life directing St. Joseph's Academy and her growing community. She died on January 4, 1821 at 46 years old, only 16 years after becoming a Catholic. She was beatified by Pope John XXIII on March 17, 1963 and was canonized by Pope Paul VI on September 14, 1975. Lord, help us through the intercession of St. Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton to be faithful to the true faith which is found in the Catholic Church.” How do I nourish my Catholic faith? Do I pray, follow the Commandments, read the Bible and perform good works?

ST. FRANCES XAVIER CABRINI l PATRON OF IMMIGRANTS AND OF HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATORS Feast Day: NOVEMBER 13 St. Frances Xavier Cabrini was an Italian, but she became a missionary to the United States, was a naturalized U.S. citizen and was the first U.S. citizen to be canonized a saint. She was conferred the rights and privileges of a U.S. citizen in 1909. Much later, the Church canonized the first U.S. born saint - St. Elizabeth Seton. Today, we will speak about St. Frances Cabrini who was born in Sant'Angelo, Lombardy, Italy on July 15, 1850. She was a bright student and studied at the school of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and graduated cum laude. She wanted to join this congregation of Sisters but her former teachers refused to accept her due to her fragile health. She applied to teach in an orphanage and became its headmistress. Meeting other women, she invited them to form a community of religious to take care of orphans, prisoners and the poor. She wrote the rules and constitutions of the congregation and named it Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. When they took their vows in 1877, St. Frances added Xavierto her name in honor of St. Francis Xavier, the patron saint of missionary services. She became superior general of this religious group until her death. During the first five years of this religious order, besides taking care of the orphans, they opened free school and nursery, gave classes in needle work and embroidery and sold their products to earn a little money. In 1887, Sr. Frances asked permission from the Pope to open a mission in China, but the Pope suggested that they go instead to the United States to help the Italian immigrants there who were in great difficulties. She prepared her group for the mission in the U.S. and with six others, she arrived in New York on March 31, 1889. They were housed temporarily by the Sisters of Charity. Immediately, they began their work, organized catechism and education classes for immigrants and asked permission from the Bishop to open an asylum for orphans and to open other orphanages. She founded small hospitals which served for many years and were recently closed by the government to establish bigger ones. St. Frances died of complications from malaria on December 22, 1917. She was beautified on November 13, 1938 and was canonized on July 7, 1946. Her beatification miracle was the cure of the sight of a day-old baby, who later became a priest and was present at her beatification. Her canonization miracle was the healing of a terminally ill member of her congregation. Her feast day is celebrated on November 13, the anniversary of her beatification. In 1950, St. Frances Xavier Cabrini was named by Pope Pius XII as the patron of immigrants and of hospital administrators. humility, piety, courage, fortitude and patience

Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton really fits the description of a woman for all seasons. She is truly a role model for women of today. Although she was always a very refined lady, she never shrunk from any kind of work which would help her or her family, whether it be her children or her ladies. She was a personification of motherhood all her life. She was a Protestant who converted after the death of her husband. She was a widow, a single mother, raising five children under the most impossible circumstances in a male-oriented world; she became a nun, and founded a religious community; you name it, Elizabeth Seton did it. Perhaps because she was such a beautiful girl, and was raised in New York society of the period, it seemed to many that she was able to just breeze through life doing wonderful things for the people of God, for the Church and for her family, without raising a bead of perspiration. Her life was anything but that.More about Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Journeys of Faith Bob and Penny Lord's StoreJourneys of Faith Blog Subscribe to our Free Blog Easy PeasyBob and Penny Lord TV Channel Miracles of the Eucharist, Apparitions of Mary, and lives of the Saints videos on demand.Support the show (https://bobandpennylord.store/pages/we-need-your-help)

The Catholic Church is the United State's second largest religious grouping, after Protestantism, and the country's largest church or religious denomination.  As of 2018, 23% of the United States population was Catholic. This is startling when you realize that at the beginning of the American experiment, religions and their adherents were almost completely Protestant and vehemently, sometimes violently, anti-Catholic. The story of this transformation is critical to understanding the American religious landscape, which is another way of saying it is critical to understanding America. And, often the best way to understand a historical movement or event is to learn about individual actors on history's stage. Importantly, as historian Anne Braude of Harvard Divinity School wrote: “Women's History is American Religious History.” One prominent Catholic in American history is Elizabeth Ann Seton, who began the Sisters of Charity, the first religious community of women founded in the United States, and who was the aunt of Seton Hall University's founder, Bishop James Roosevelt Bayley. Today to help us understand the life and times of Elizabeth Ann Seton is Catherine O'Donnell, Professor of History at Arizona State University and author of Elizabeth Seton: American Saint, which was awarded the Distinguished Book Award by the Conference on the History of Women Religious, for books published from 2016-2018, as well as the Biography Prize from the Catholic Press Association. Her primary research interests include Early American history, culture, and religion. She is also the author of Men of Letters in the Early Republic and many articles appearing in venues including the William and Mary Quarterly, the Journal of the Early Republic, Early American Literature, and the US Catholic Historian. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on early American history and the Atlantic World. It is hoped that our time together today will help us better understand what religion has done to America, and what America has done to religion, and we trust that as a result, listeners will come to better understand how revolutionary and indispensable the idea of religious freedom as a governing principle, is, to the United States and its future.
