Continuing the conversation: Today's guest is a man whose story reads like a modern-day Acts of the Apostles—complete with overseas mission work, a deep calling to serve, and a heart on fire for building community through faith. Brandon Groome's journey began not in a pulpit, but on the mission field—where he and his wife Rena dedicated their early years to bringing hope and the message of Jesus to underserved corners of the world. Those formative years shaped more than just a worldview—they shaped a vision. One rooted in service, in walking alongside people through every season of life, and ultimately, in planting something lasting. That vision would eventually lead Brandon back to Georgia, where he became not just a pastor, but a church planter—currently leading the launch of Grace Lake Church right here in Eatonton. With more than 20 years in ministry, Brandon brings a deep well of wisdom, a gitft for connection, and a passion for multiplying what he calls “Jesus encounters in everyday life.” He's not just building a church—he's cultivating a movement. Now this was a fun interview...two friends that met through running, now crew one another, race together and train together when they can. Both Tim Nooney and Miller Groome decided to run the Black Canyon 100k this past February, and I wanted to hear from both of them about their journey through this race. It was so great to hear that they were able to share several of the miles together on the trails of Arizona, while also entertaining all around them with their banter. :) But, as the day unfolded their race took very different turns. We talk training, gear, every detail of race day, problem solving, lessons learned, and more. Congratulations to Tim for taking 16th male in an incredibly tough field. Thank you, Tim and Miller for your awesomeness. You guys are the best. I hope you enjoy! Over the past few weeks, U.S. news has been flooded with images of hurricane disaster: endless traffic jams full of evacuees, communities destroyed by deadly winds, and residents struggling to access the resources they need to survive while multiple feet of water stand in the streets. But how has car dependency impacted the course of these unthinkable events — and how can addressing it make us more resilient to whatever climate change throws at us next? On today's episode of the Brake, we're sitting down with two experts from the Institute, Sara McTarnaghan and Will Curran-Groom, who are thinking deeply about the intersection between disaster planning and everyday urban planning, and how making our neighborhoods less centered on the automobile can help everyone when the big storm comes — which, as we've been reminded this week, can happen just about anywhere. And along the way, we get into hard questions about how to evacuate people who don't have cars, how ending exclusionary zoning now can pay dividends when communities set up resource hubs after a disaster, and so much more. Note: this episode was recorded after Hurricane Helene, but before Hurricane Milton. We are sending all our thoughts to the people in the path of both of those storms, and all the storms to come. If you are looking for ways to support the victims, here are a few resources.

S1E12: Demystifying the 2024 Healthcare Mega-Breaches and their Policy Implications The first half of 2024 has brought perhaps the most significant healthcare breaches in history. While the ransom scenario for these breaches was very different, they had effects that rippled not only through healthcare but into other businesses completely outside the sector. Cybersecurity luminary and Malcolm Baldridge Award winner Carter Groome will compare and contrast these mega-breaches in addition to demystifying recent federal policies (and lack thereof) that can offer greater protection for healthcare enterprises and their patient data.

Lunar Moth? What!? You will have to listen to my awesome conversation with Miller Groome to see what in the world this is about! Although I have never met Miller in person until our conversation, we both ran in the Cruel Jewel 100 this past May. He is also close friends with many that I run with, so it was so fun getting to know him myself. Miller has been extremely successful in the Ultra world, with many podium spots in the races he has done, including coming in third overall at Cruel Jewel. Miller also recently obtained the FKT on the Linville Gorge Hiking Circuit-a 34 mile grueling run that circles the Linville Gorge Wilderness in its' entirety. Yes, he is a competitor, but he simply runs for the enjoyment. Being outdoors is where he finds his peace and joy. As an ER nurse at Mission Hospital, I can't imagine the chaos he sees on a daily basis, but he has the most laid-back personality, and I love his zest for life. Thank you, Miller, for spending time chatting with me. I look forward to seeing you out on the trails! Welcome back to America's leading higher education law podcast, EdUp Legal - part of the EdUp Experience Podcast Network! In today's episode, we welcome three guests to discuss Penn State Dickinson Law's leadership and antiracist education: TaWanda H. Stallworth, MDiv, program manager for the Antiracist Development Institute, Professor Dermot Groome, and Anu Gupta, founder and CEO of Be More and a systems designer for the Antiracist Development Institute. The Antiracist Development Institute came out of several Penn State Law faculty resolutions that included adopting an antiracist approach to legal education in June 2020. The Institute built on the foundational work of Dean Conway and four Black women Dean colleagues who started the Law Dean's Antiracist Clearinghouse Project in 2020. Listen as she discusses the Clearinghouse and the Institute in detail in episode 57. Professor Groome explains why the faculty decided to create a race and equal protection in the law course and explains its development and implementation. Program Manager Stallworth tells us about the new initiative of a multi-volume series called building an Antiracist Law School, Legal Academy, and Legal Profession. She shares with us the vast collaboration behind the multi-volume series and the support it has received within and outside the academy. Systems designer Anu Gupta shares how thinking about racism as a system's problem that needs system solutions will help inspire more comprehensive reform. They share the development of course content and the multi-volume series, which helps form and shape the course content. They tell us that the goal of antiracism is a world where all of us are equal and can belong with dignity and humanity. To get involved, check out their website. In the end, they share their predictions for the future of legal education in the coming decade. Professor Groome tells us the importance of teaching students about racism in the legal system. Program Manager Stallworth tells us she anticipates that more people will learn about the problems associated with questioning the merits of Black women. Finally, systems designer Gupta shares his vision for the future of legal education and how antiracism will be discussed beyond issues involving race and equal protection of the law, and integrated in the more traditional courses such as corporations, torts, and contracts. M., Taniguchi, L., Pinto, D. F. C., Tucciarone, J., Bentzley, B. S., Malenka, R. C. Abstract: Dopamine (DA) release in the ventral and dorsal striatum has been linked to reward processing and motivation, but there are longstanding controversies about whether DA release in these key target structures primarily reflects costs or benefits, and how these signals vary with motivation. Here we apply behavioral economic principles to generate demand curves for rewards while directly measuring DA release in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) and dorsolateral striatum (DLS) via a genetically-encoded sensor. By independently varying costs and benefits, we reveal that DA release in both structures incorporates reward magnitude and sunk cost. Surprisingly, motivation was inversely correlated with reward-evoked DA release; the higher the motivation for rewards the lower the reward-evoked DA release. These relationships between DA release, cost and motivation remained identical when we used optogenetic activation of striatal DA inputs as a reward. Our results reconcile previous disparate findings by demonstrating that during operant tasks, striatal DA release simultaneously encodes cost, benefit and motivation but in distinct manners over different time scales. Up to 70% of sampled Covid-19 cases in the last month were as a result of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. In a digital briefing on Friday, Health Minister Joe Phaahla said Omicron was fast becoming the dominant variant in South Africa, overtaking the Delta variant. Omicron has now been identified in 57 countries around the world. He added that the reproductive number of the virus (the number of people who are likely to be infected by one person) was 2.5 - higher than it was at any other point in the pandemic. "Omicron has driven the resurgence in South Africa," Phaahla said. He added that 90 000 cases had been reported in all provinces in just under a month. On Thursday, there were more than 22 000 new infections. He also said that 70 % of the samples sequenced since November, showed Omicron as the dominant variant. Phaahla added that so far, it appeared that patients who were admitted to hospital during the fourth Covid-19 wave experienced a less severe form of the disease. He said, "Scientists have been conducting rapid research to better understand many aspects of the Omicron variant, including how well this variant transmits and whether it can escape some of our immunity." The National Institute for Communicable Diseases' (NICD) Michelle Groome said during the briefing that the country's seven-day moving average was more than 13 000. This was being driven primarily by increased cases in Gauteng, especially among younger age groups. "We've seen a dramatic increase - much higher than in the second or third waves," she said. She added that there were slight increases in the hospitalisation rate, primarily due to admissions in Gauteng. Dr Mathabo Mathebula, CEO of Pretoria's Steve Biko Academic Hospital, said hospital admissions appeared to be for age groups where there was lower vaccine coverage. However, she said, there were early indications that fewer patients require oxygen or ventilation once hospitalised. The length of hospital stays has also shortened. However, Groome cautioned that due to the sharp increase in cases, hospitalisations could increase over the next few weeks and result in different data.
