In this episode of Love & Speak the Truth, Sr. Brenda is joined by Annette Haseneder, Congregation of Jesus (CJ) formation consultant and a proud alumna of a Mary Ward school in Munich Nymphenburg, Germany. Annette shares her inspiring journey from a boarding school student to an advocate for Mary Ward's enduring legacy. She reflects on how the all-female environment of her school nurtured boldness and freedom, empowering young women to embrace their voices and passions. A fusion of past and present, a 17th century woman in the modern world, Annette becomes a living testament to Mary Ward's vision and values. We delve into Mary Ward's visionary approach, particularly her groundbreaking belief in women that positions her as a key figure in feminist history. Annette passionately discusses how these lessons remain profoundly relevant in today's world. Join us to discover just why, “Women in time (indeed) will do much!”

English Women's Spiritual Utopias, 1400-1700: New Kingdoms of Womanhood (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022) uncovers a tradition of women's utopianism that extends back to medieval women's monasticism, overturning accounts of utopia that trace its origins solely to Thomas More. As enclosed spaces in which women wielded authority that was unavailable to them in the outside world, medieval and early modern convents were self-consciously engaged in reworking pre-existing cultural heritage to project desired proto-feminist futures.  The utopianism developed within the English convent percolated outwards to unenclosed women's spiritual communities such as Mary Ward's Institute of the Blessed Virgin and the Ferrar family at Little Gidding. Convent-based utopianism further acted as an unrecognized influence on the first English women's literary utopias by authors such as Margaret Cavendish and Mary Astell. Collectively, these female communities forged a mode of utopia that drew on the past to imagine new possibilities for themselves as well as for their larger religious and political communities. Tracking utopianism from the convent to the literary page over a period of 300 years, New Kingdoms writes a new history of medieval and early modern women's intellectual work and expands the concept of utopia itself. As The LDS Mission Coach, I'm always looking for powerful stories and insights that can support current, future, and returned missionaries. This episode 182 - Mission and Post Mission Mental Health with my friend Mary Ward is one of those conversations that I know will resonate deeply. Mary vulnerably shares her personal struggles with mental health challenges during her COVID-era mission. From battling imposter syndrome to experiencing emotional breakdowns, Mary's story is a raw and honest look at the realities that many missionaries face. But what makes this episode so impactful is Mary's willingness to be vulnerable, to seek support, and to ultimately find peace in knowing that God was satisfied with the effort she gave. Whether you're preparing to serve, currently serving, or recently returned from your mission, I know this episode will provide comfort, wisdom, and a reminder that you're not alone. Mary's insights on the difference between obedience and perfection, as well as the constant presence of our Heavenly Parents, are truly profound. I hope you'll listen, share this episode, and know that I'm here cheering you on every step of the way. As always, if you found this episode helpful, I want to invite you to subscribe if you aren't already, share this episode with your friends and missionaries you know, and write a review. I know this work will help LDS missionaries around the world and it would mean so much to me if you did. Until next week my friends. Mary Ward recently graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelor's degree in Religious Studies and is currently working as an intern at the same university. Born and raised in Salt Lake City, she served her mission in the Boston, Massachusetts mission Spanish- speaking from May 2020 to April 2021.  Check out some of the awesome content Mary creates on Instagram here:  @moderndaymissionaries   Website | Instagram | Facebook   Get the Full Show Notes and Text/PDF Transcripts: HERE   Free PDF Download:  Podcast Roadmap   Free PDF Download:  Preparing Missionary Cheat Sheet   My Free Training for Preparing Missionaries:  Change Your Mission with this One Tool   RM Transition Free Video Series:  3 Tools to Help RMs in Their Transition Home   Free Guide:  5 Tips to Help Any Returning Missionary   Schedule a Free Strategy Call:   Click Here

If you remember the #butnotmaternity campaign during the Covid-19 pandemic you'll recall that women were sometimes left to give birth without their partners. Those restrictions for maternity care were left in place far too long affecting the mental health of mothers and staff. That's according to evidence given to the Covid-19 inquiry which this week is looking at the subject in detail. The inquiry has been listening to the impact on women from 13 pregnancy, baby and parent organisations. We hear from our correspondent who has been following it, Jim Reid, and from Jenny Ward, the CEO of the Lullaby Trust, who gave evidence on behalf of all the organisations. And we talk to Daisie Lane who tells us of her own experience and her book chronicling 150 other women's experiences.Bestselling author Sophie Kinsella, known for the hugely popular Shopaholic series and many other bestsellers, has sold over 45 million books which have been translated into more than 40 languages. Her latest novel, What Does It Feel Like?, is her most autobiographical yet. It tells the story of a novelist who wakes up in a hospital bed with no memory of how she got there and learns she's had surgery to remove a large tumour growing in her brain. She must re-learn how to walk, talk, and write again. Six months ago, Sophie shared with her readers on social media that in 2022, she had been diagnosed with glioblastoma, a type of aggressive brain cancer. It's known for its poor prognosis with only 25% of people surviving more than one year, and only 5% survive more than five years.A murder investigation has been launched after the body of a 22-year-old woman was found in south Belfast. Mary Ward is the fourth woman to be murdered in the space of six weeks in Northern Ireland. The Police Service of Northern Ireland - or PSNI - have referred the case to the office of the Police Ombudsman. Earlier this year, the PSNI released figures showing that in the five years between 2019 and 2024, 30 women and girls across Northern Ireland were killed by men. To put that into context, the population of Northern Ireland is around 1.9 million. We hear from Alison Morris - the Crime Reporter for the Belfast Telegraph.Woman's Hour is joined by the winner of the BBC Green Sport Award, the rower Imogen Grant. But to get a transfusion, that blood needs to have been donated by someone else - a task that's proving difficult as the high COVID case numbers force donors to cancel their appointments. Now, the Red Cross has warned that the national blood supply has just days left until it runs out and has urged Australians to donate blood, especially those with rare O negative blood types. Compounding the issue is the approaching Easter and Anzac Day long weekends, where an increase in road accidents prompts higher demand for blood. We discuss the life of Mary Ward the 17th century Catholic nun who actively championed education for girls - and even spent time in prison for her cause. Now, almost four hundred years after her death, Mary Ward's legacy lives on via a network of almost 200 Mary Ward schools worldwide – including St Mary's School in Cambridge. She is considered the first sister of feminism and a pioneer of female missionary work. Sister Jane Livesey and Charlotte Avery headmistress at St Mary's school for girls tell us about her life and legacy. We hear from Jo Richards from British Wheelchair Basketball about the start of the British Wheelchair Basketball Women's Premier League which begins on Saturday live on the BBC. The league is the first of its kind worldwide, and the UK's first women's professional Para-sport league. What do you remember about ‘ladette culture'? It was a term first coined in 1994 to describe young women who behaved boisterously, assertively and loved a drink. Some considered it a feminist movement – allowing girls to act ‘just like men'. Comedian Shappi Khorsandi – who grew up in the 90's – explores ladette culture in her new comedy stand up tour. Professor Angela Smith teaches Language and Culture at the University of Sunderland. Shappi and Angela both join Anita to discuss the significance of this time, and how our attitudes have changed. On 17th November 2019, Grey Atticus Fox was born, nine weeks early to author Georgina Lucas and her partner Mike. Weighing just three and a half pounds, he was taken to the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit and put on a ventilator. But less than two weeks later, a devastating prognosis left Georgina and Mike with an agonising decision of whether to withdraw Grey's life support. Georgina writes movingly about this experience and its aftermath in her memoir If Not For You. Woman to Woman is the all-star group founded back in 2018 and features musical artists Beverley Craven, Julia Fordham and Judie Tzuke. Now the trio are back with a new album, new tour and a new collaborator- singer-songwriter Rumer. 88: How Do You Create a Dynamic Culture as a Nonprofit Leader? (Mary Ward) SUMMARYWill you be ready for your next opportunity to be a nonprofit leader? Often the best opportunities occur when you're least expecting them, and you must rely on past experience, great mentors, and simply gut instinct, before you make the move. This type of opportunity occurred for Mary Ward, our guest in episode #88 of the Path Podcast, when she had the opportunity to lead the McLeod Center. She offers fantastic advice for nonprofit leaders in evaluating a new opportunity, determining exactly what to do once you arrive, and establishing a trusting and mission-focused environment. She also tackles strategic topics such as how to follow a long-time leader at an organization, honor their legacy, but also initiate changes that need to be made. We also discussed questions such as: how do you establish a positive culture in an inherently stressful clinical environment (and then add a pandemic on top!)? Mary talks about all of the cultural factors she assessed, as well as the resources she’s utilized to maintain a dynamic staff and board culture and continue the important work her organization does every day.ABOUT MARYMary Ward became President of the McLeod Addictive Disease Center in April, 2017. She is responsible for a $19M business and 230 employees serving the Piedmont and Western regions of North Carolina, providing outpatient and residential services through nine treatment service sites. In 2020, McLeod Center delivered over 57,000 patient services and launched a virtual care delivery system. Previously, Mary was Assistant Vice President of Addiction Medicine with Atrium Health where she had oversight three hospital and non-hospital based substance use disorder services. She was part of the first addiction medicine dyad leadership team and helped launch the system’s first site for office-based medication assisted treatment. Prior to Atrium, she was the Director of Community Relations for the Mecklenburg County Alcoholic Beverage Control Board where she grew a grant program from $200,000 to $1.2 million in annual and multi-year awards for substance use disorder services with 20 community organizations. She is passionate about the adverse effects of social determinants to health and uses her over 25 years of experience in local and state community corrections to advocate for equal access to care. In addition to several local community groups, she currently serves on the Public Policy Committee with the North Carolina Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence. She holds a MBA from Queens University McColl School of Business and a B.S. in Criminal Justice from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I’ve got to tell you, everything about this whole episode made me quite emotional. As I walked back into the welcoming foyer of the Chicken Shed Theatre—for the first time in many year –  my mind was instantly taken back to the wonderful memories my wife and I had dropping our then 9 year old son off for rehearsals, at this magical venue that “celebrates inclusion to enrich lives and transform our world.” That’s a hell of mantra to live up to. But believe me Chicken Shed Theatre does all that and more. I met up with the wonderful & deeply passionate Artistic Director, Lou Stein, who took over the reins of this magnificent theatre some 3 years ago. I thought Chicken Shed was a magical place before, but Lou is taking it to a whole new level of professionalism whilst following their mission to make Chicken Shed a pioneering and inclusive company that makes beautiful and inspirational theatre—bringing together people of all ages and from all backgrounds to produce outstanding theatre that entertains, inspires, challenges, and informs both audiences and participants alike. Step inside and share in the magic. “I realized I didn’t want to write about facts—I wanted to write about fiction. Things that somehow illuminate the world around us in a very different way.” [3:50] Lou is a New Yorker through and through. He can trace the beginning of his story to where he is now with a common thread of diversity—something he was raised around in South Brooklyn. It wasn’t until he attended Northwestern University in Chicago that he fell in love with theatre and began to see its power to bring together people from different social background and ethnicities. Fiction was a revelation for Lou in the way he saw it as a conduit for illuminating the differences and similarities between us all. [12:55] Lou made the move the London and started his international career at the Gate Theatre, which no one had really heard of at the time. Timing was key in his success, as he came at a time when it was a little easier to get by in the city with the income he made at the theatre through profit share—something indicative of how much of a collective the theatre was at the time. A huge move came for Lou as he transitioned to Watford Palace Theatre, succeeding Michael Attenborough. Then only a couple of years later Lou started his own company: Lou Stein Associates, a company he set up as he was figuring out where the trajectory of his career was taking him. In the end, his entrepreneurial spirit won over as he set out to do his own work. “Every communication that you have—whether you work in property or insurance or wherever, has to tell a story. Even if you’re on the phone’‘ [28:05] The direct connection between Lou and Chicken Shed came about through his son Ethan who was born with Down Syndrome. As the father of a child with a disability, Lou saw how  isolation can happen for both the parents and the child. A friend of Lou’s gave him the number for Mary Ward at Chicken Shed, and before he knew it, Ethan was at the programme and going through a tremendous transformation. Ethan gained a confidence Lou hadn’t seen before, and he saw how once you walk through the doors at Chicken Shed no one is any different from anyone else. Lou took over as Artistic Director after seeing an ad in the Guardian, and he has set out to give people a foundation at Chicken Shed to change their lives. I can’t recommend enough getting out to see a performance at Chicken Shed (https://www.chickenshed.org.uk/) , which now has locations and outreach programs internationally.   Links Chickenshed Theatre (https://www.chickenshed.org.uk/) Lou Stein Twitter (https://twitter.com/steinlou?lang=en)       Support this podcast

@TinDogPodcast reviews the frankly brilliant STAR COPS - MOTHER EARTH 2 from @BigFinish   This title was released in November 2018. It will be exclusively available to buy from the BF website until December 31st 2018, and on general sale after this date. It’s the near future, and mankind has expanded its presence in space. Maintaining law and order among this network of space stations, satellites and moon outposts is the responsibility of the International Space Police Force, known colloquially as the Star Cops. Their leader is Commander Nathan Spring. It’s been months since the last attack by Mother Earth, the activist group opposed to mankind’s expansion into space. It’s believed that the group is finished. But instead, Mother Earth is about to renew its campaign. This time with even more ferocity and violence. 2.1: Dead and Buried by Guy Adams At Lunar Interments, the moon’s graveyard for the wealthy, the caretaker has noticed something odd in the burial records. Odd enough for him to call in the Star Cops. Devis isn’t happy at being assigned to what he thinks is a mundane case. Not when Nathan and Kenzy are off to investigate a burglary at the home of billionaire businessman Ben Alexander. A break-in where the burglar has finished up dead. But in the lunar resting place of the dead, Devis will find himself racing against the clock to save his life and hundreds of others. 2.2: The Killing Jar by John Dorney The Charlie Chaplin is a second-hand space station operated as a space-tourism hub by entrepreneur Martin Thane. When Nathan receives reports that serious accidents and even a death have been caused by Thane flouting safety laws, he decides to investigate. An accident investigation soon becomes a murder enquiry. And as the Star Cops hunt for the killer, the station becomes a death trap threatening everyone on board. 2.3: Moonshine by Roland Moore A friend of Kenzy’s on the space station Coral Sea has been dismissed for possession of alcohol and sent back to Earth. She believes his claim that he was framed, and when she learns of his subsequent suicide she and Devis travel to Australia to investigate. A difficult enquiry is not helped when Kenzy’s former fiancé, a Police Superintendent, appears on the scene. On Moonbase, Nathan is expecting an official visit from a powerful dignitary. So it’s not a good time for there to be a fatal incident that may be the work of Mother Earth... 2.4: Hostage by Andrew Smith The Star Cops are under intense pressure in the face of continuing Mother Earth attacks. The very existence of the International Space Police Force is in jeopardy. Kenzy and Priya are responding to a murderous Mother Earth explosion at a moon outpost when one of the workers, Mary Ward, takes a hostage and makes demands, accusing others of trying to kill her. She appears to have snapped under pressure. As the crisis develops, dangerous secrets are revealed. Secrets that some will be prepared to kill for. And die for.   Please note: Star Cops features some mild swearing and content which may not be suitable for younger listeners. Written By: Guy Adams, John Dorney, Roland Moore, Andrew Smith Directed By: Helen Goldwyn Cast David Calder (Nathan Spring / Box), Trevor Cooper (Colin Devis), Linda Newton (Pal Kenzy), Rakhee Thakrar (Priya Basu), Philip Olivier (Paul Bailey), Nimmy March (Shayla Moss), Andrew Fettes (Mac Thirwell), Vikash Bhai (Ben Alexander), Amy Downham (Lyra Fox), Will Chitty (Martin Thane), Tor Clark (Rebecca Driscoll), Timothy Hofmeier (Phil Bovey / Vernon Hollis), Craig Armstrong (Barney Hillier / Theodore Gallow), William Gaminara (Godfrey Miller), Sarah Sutton (Mary Ward), Emily Carewe (Sally Newell).
