Annette shares her inspiring journey from a boarding school student to an advocate for Mary Ward's enduring legacy. She reflects on how the all-female environment of her school nurtured boldness and freedom, empowering young women to embrace their voices and passions. A fusion of past and present, a 17th century woman in the modern world, Annette becomes a living testament to Mary Ward's vision and values. We delve into Mary Ward's visionary approach, particularly her groundbreaking belief in women that positions her as a key figure in feminist history. Annette passionately discusses how these lessons remain profoundly relevant in today's world. Join us to discover just why, “Women in time (indeed) will do much!”

English Women's Spiritual Utopias, 1400-1700: New Kingdoms of Womanhood (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022) uncovers a tradition of women's utopianism that extends back to medieval women's monasticism, overturning accounts of utopia that trace its origins solely to Thomas More. As enclosed spaces in which women wielded authority that was unavailable to them in the outside world, medieval and early modern convents were self-consciously engaged in reworking pre-existing cultural heritage to project desired proto-feminist futures.  The utopianism developed within the English convent percolated outwards to unenclosed women's spiritual communities such as Mary Ward's Institute of the Blessed Virgin and the Ferrar family at Little Gidding. Convent-based utopianism further acted as an unrecognized influence on the first English women's literary utopias by authors such as Margaret Cavendish and Mary Astell. Collectively, these female communities forged a mode of utopia that drew on the past to imagine new possibilities for themselves as well as for their larger religious and political communities. Tracking utopianism from the convent to the literary page over a period of 300 years, New Kingdoms writes a new history of medieval and early modern women's intellectual work and expands the concept of utopia itself. As The LDS Mission Coach, I'm always looking for powerful stories and insights that can support current, future, and returned missionaries. This episode 182 - Mission and Post Mission Mental Health with my friend Mary Ward is one of those conversations that I know will resonate deeply. Mary vulnerably shares her personal struggles with mental health challenges during her COVID-era mission. From battling imposter syndrome to experiencing emotional breakdowns, Mary's story is a raw and honest look at the realities that many missionaries face. But what makes this episode so impactful is Mary's willingness to be vulnerable, to seek support, and to ultimately find peace in knowing that God was satisfied with the effort she gave. Whether you're preparing to serve, currently serving, or recently returned from your mission, I know this episode will provide comfort, wisdom, and a reminder that you're not alone. Mary's insights on the difference between obedience and perfection, as well as the constant presence of our Heavenly Parents, are truly profound. I hope you'll listen, share this episode, and know that I'm here cheering you on every step of the way. As always, if you found this episode helpful, I want to invite you to subscribe if you aren't already, share this episode with your friends and missionaries you know, and write a review. I know this work will help LDS missionaries around the world and it would mean so much to me if you did. Until next week my friends. Mary Ward recently graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelor's degree in Religious Studies and is currently working as an intern at the same university. If you remember the #butnotmaternity campaign during the Covid-19 pandemic you'll recall that women were sometimes left to give birth without their partners. Those restrictions for maternity care were left in place far too long affecting the mental health of mothers and staff. That's according to evidence given to the Covid-19 inquiry which this week is looking at the subject in detail. The inquiry has been listening to the impact on women from 13 pregnancy, baby and parent organisations. We hear from our correspondent who has been following it, Jim Reid, and from Jenny Ward, the CEO of the Lullaby Trust, who gave evidence on behalf of all the organisations. And we talk to Daisie Lane who tells us of her own experience and her book chronicling 150 other women's experiences.Bestselling author Sophie Kinsella, known for the hugely popular Shopaholic series and many other bestsellers, has sold over 45 million books which have been translated into more than 40 languages. Her latest novel, What Does It Feel Like?, is her most autobiographical yet. It tells the story of a novelist who wakes up in a hospital bed with no memory of how she got there and learns she's had surgery to remove a large tumour growing in her brain. She must re-learn how to walk, talk, and write again. Six months ago, Sophie shared with her readers on social media that in 2022, she had been diagnosed with glioblastoma, a type of aggressive brain cancer. It's known for its poor prognosis with only 25% of people surviving more than one year, and only 5% survive more than five years.A murder investigation has been launched after the body of a 22-year-old woman was found in south Belfast. Mary Ward is the fourth woman to be murdered in the space of six weeks in Northern Ireland. The Police Service of Northern Ireland - or PSNI - have referred the case to the office of the Police Ombudsman. Earlier this year, the PSNI released figures showing that in the five years between 2019 and 2024, 30 women and girls across Northern Ireland were killed by men. To put that into context, the population of Northern Ireland is around 1.9 million. We hear from Alison Morris - the Crime Reporter for the Belfast Telegraph.Woman's Hour is joined by the winner of the BBC Green Sport Award, the rower Imogen Grant. A national surge in coronavirus cases driven by newer variants of the Omicron strain of COVID-19 is raising concerns about the impact on the health system over winter. The BA4 and BA5 variants have seen case numbers similar to those seen during the original Omicron wave in summer and has prompted health officials to call for eligibility for a fourth dose of the coronavirus vaccine to be expanded and better access to anti-viral treatments. So far, only those aged 65 and over, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders aged 50 and over and those with conditions that increase the risk of severe illness are eligible for a fourth “winter” dose. Today on Please Explain, health reporter Mary Ward joins Nathanael Cooper to discuss whether there'll be a wider rollout of a fourth dose. Her qualifications range across education, history, liturgy and theology – with a particular focus on the nexus between liturgy, pastoral care and social justice. Anne is inspired, animated and challenged by her spiritual hero – Mary Ward – and nurtured by the creative and performing arts! Although socially awkward, Anne is fascinated by group dynamics, distributed leadership and reframing of organisational dynamics through the lens of introversion. In 2022 Anne has written material to mark Laudato Si Week for ACBC Office for Justice, Ecology and Peace, arranged stunning floral displays, explored images of God with Year 2 students, run workshops for staff on the transformative potential of liturgy in schools, worked on the campaign of her local federal independent candidate and cared for her 99 year old mum. Anne is moving through her second Clinical Pastoral Education placement at Peter MacCallum Cancer Hospital in Naarm, where she is learning heaps from patients, their families and staff about love and loss, grief and grace, healing and hope.

If you've ever been in a hospital, an ambulance or other life-threatening situation, having a supply of blood on hand for a transfusion is something many of us may take for granted, or not even think about in the first place. But to get a transfusion, that blood needs to have been donated by someone else - a task that's proving difficult as the high COVID case numbers force donors to cancel their appointments. Now, the Red Cross has warned that the national blood supply has just days left until it runs out and has urged Australians to donate blood, especially those with rare O negative blood types. Compounding the issue is the approaching Easter and Anzac Day long weekends, where an increase in road accidents prompts higher demand for blood. Today on Please Explain, health reporter Mary Ward joins Dominic Powell to discuss the shortage and why it has happened. _Música: Cambo – Coffe (Licencia Creative Commons, no comercial)Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/LaCienciaPop)

She spent a lot of time observing plants and animals through a microscope and published a book of detailed sketches that dazzled readers and colleagues in the 1800s. However, her career was cut short by a strange curiosity of that time period: the automobile. They weren't the same cars that are around today, but her death was the first car death recorded in history, and it foreshadowed the carnage the automobile continues to leave behind.
