We begin Black History Month with conversations with two amazing Black Americans. First, I talk with Angelo Antonio Ellerbee. Ellerbee is a pioneer in the entertainment industry and has made an indelible impact on history globally as well as our culture. His career spans over five decades, during which he has represented a diverse array of clients, including Michael Jackson, Mary J. Blige, Lionel Richie, and DMX. He's penned a deeply personal memoir, "Before I Let You Go," and dedicated it to marginalized groups including the LGBTQIA+ community, survivors of domestic violence and others. Next we chat with Wren T. Brown, an actor, producer, director and founder and producing artistic director of Ebony Repertory Theatre, LA's only African American Professional theatre company. His book, "The Family Business" shares stories and many never-before-seen images from his family's four generations and more than 100-years in the arts and entertainment industry. His focus is on the Black artist in American culture.
Host Dr. Joshua Liu, Co-founder & CEO of SeamlessMD, and marketing colleague, Alan Sardana, chat with Summer Blackerby, Chief Nursing Information Officer at CoxHealth, and Gina Ellerbee, Administrative Director of Nursing Practice and Professional Development at CoxHealth, about "Launching a Virtual Nursing Pilot in 9 Days, Scaling Virtual Care Beyond the Pilot, Shifting From Task-Based Workflows to Patient-Centered Collaboration While Reducing Burnout, and more." Angelo Ellerbee discusses his work in the music industry, including his efforts to enhance communities through education and the performing arts. He shares stories of working with artists like James Mtume and Melba Moore, emphasizing the importance of relationships and mentorship. Ellerbee also talks about his book, 'Before I Let Go: Life Lessons from an Industry Guru,' which aims to inspire and motivate readers to appreciate the gift of life. He highlights the need for Black people to support and uplift each other, and shares his plans for future projects in film and TV.
Angelo Ellerbee is an institution! The public relations maverick has worked with and guided the careers of icons and ingenues, legends and leading actors and he has built a legacy that continues to flourish decades after he began. The Newark, NJ native, who began his stellar career working in the fashion industry--designing, styling and hosting shows as fundraisers to combat the global issue of HIV/AIDS--soon found himself in the world of publicity and artist relations,In 1985, Ellerbee founded Double XXposure Public Relations, working with artists and record labels to champion the careers of such luminaries as Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Dionne Warwick, Roberta Flack and reggae giants like Shabba Ranks and Patra, while also shaping the careers of supermodels and burgeoning business titans and industry leaders. But the thing that caught the attention of everyone in the music industry was that Angelo Ellerbee had a keen sense of artist development, a component of the music industry that had helped to establish artists of the Motown era especially (but an essential part of most labels) that had slowly disappeared in the ever-changing landscape of music. While continuing to serve as CEO of his flagship enterprise, Ellerbee also went on to serve as Senior VP of Publicity for Island Def Jam Records, where he brought R&B supergroup Dru Hill, music legend Mr. Biggs aka Ronald Isley of the legendary Isley Brothers, and gospel superstar Karen Clark Sheard to prominence. Double XXposure managed such major talents as sex symbol/singer Ginuwine, pop superstar Laura Branigan and rap icon DMX. Ellerbee took the helm of DMX's career, serving as President and General Manager of rap superstar's Bloodline Records. Under his leadership, Ellerbee cultivated the Def Jam imprint into a full-fledged recording company. In addition, he managed the multi-platinum recording artist himself, as he collected more than 22 million record sales in his global tallies. Never one to settle or sit on his laurels, Ellerbee has continued to expand his presence in media, writing 3 best-selling books [WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE?, ASK ANGELO (46 Years of Industry Excellence) and his latest tome THE SENSE OF SUCCESS, where his no-nonsense style helps the readers tackle difficult shifts and struggles in their quest for success). He continues to work in television, partnering with BET Networks to produce 4 shows, including Harlem Hall of Fame, which will honor and celebrate the culture of the renown hamlet and such Harlem heroes as the original Black sex symbol, actor Billy Dee Williams, Congressman Charles Rangel, fashion maverick Audrey Smaltz, leading lady of Hollywood Leslie Uggams and music's buoyant bad boy for life, producer/recording artist/fashion mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs. Ellerbee also works passionately with the LGBTQ community, having served as Chairman of the Board of NYC's Gay Men of African Descent (GMAD) and working with Unity Fellowship Church Movement on their 35th Anniversary Gala under the leadership of Archbishop Carl Bean, who recorded "Born This Way" during his own stellar career at Motown Records. Angelo Ellerbee is the Sultan of Swag and his capacity to transform and translate the culture has made him an industry giant for decades, and he's still standing. Vernetta Cockerham and Karen Williams share a tragic experience that no woman should ever have to endure. Their former husband, Richard Ellerbee, proved to be a true demon who walked this earth, leaving behind a wake of utter chaos and devastation for both women.Ellerbee's abusive and violent actions towards these women and their families have forever scarred them, and their stories serve as a somber reminder of the devastating impact domestic violence can have. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/murderintheblack/message

Election Day offers hope that with the right choices, things can change for the better. This week, three women journalists, ardent feminists, talk about choices on the ballot in November 2023, matters not on the ballot that should be—guns, and women's rights left unresolved despite years of voting. Ann O'Neill is a retired journalist and award-winning long-form storyteller who haunted newsrooms from Philadelphia to Los Angeles to Atlanta. The Philadelphia Daily News, The Los Angeles Times, and CNN Digital, to be specific. She specializes in criminal justice issues and high profile trials.Linda Ellerbee began her illustrious journalism career at the Associated Press, then moved to TV, covering Congress for NBC News. She became a political analyst for the network and later anchored and wrote “NBC News Overnight.” She moved to ABC News in 1986, where she anchored and wrote “Our World,” a show about 20th Century American history. Elleree left ABC to start Lucky Duck Productions with Rolfe Tessem, her partner. For 28 years, LDP produced documentaries for broadcast and cable networks. LDP also produced Nick News, a documentary series for children that aired on Nickelodeon for 25 years. Ellerbee retired in 2015 with 13 national Emmys.

Physician burnout has been and will be a hot topic in every healthcare organization. However, are enough organizations also looking at the burden their non-clinical staff are experiencing? The reality is that if you don't take of your non-clinical staff that has a trickle down effect that impacts patients and doctors. This is a really big problem that needs to be addressed. This was the topic of discussion with Hannah Ellerbee, Principal at Divurgent, who has literally worked on the front lines of healthcare and seen the burden these non-clinical staff face. In our interview at the CHIME Fall Forum conference, Ellerbee shares some of the things she's hearing about the burden on non-clinical staff and what that means for an organization. ANGELO ELLERBEE: From humble beginnings with a family of 7, raised by his mother in Newark, New Jersey, who had a strict work ethic, went to work at the age of 9, and by the age of 18 he became the Office Manager for the Mayor of Newark's Policy & Development Office. Angelo then worked as a model in Paris at the age of 19 for 2 years. Later, he launched his clothing line "De Angelo's" which hit major department stores nationally, from Bergdorfs to Macy's and as a multi-tasker, also hosted his show “Ellerbee's Eye on Fashion'. In 1985 Angelo founded Double XXposure Public Relations after his entry into the world of publicity relations and artist relations via his mentor JamesMtume, super producer and jazz impresario, who he soon managed and quickly afterward was working with legends such as: Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Dionne Warwick, Roberta Flack, reggae giants Shabba Ranks and Patra, while also shaping the careers of supermodels and burgeoning business titans and industry leaders, via his finishing school mode of operation, teaching education first, then entertainment, pulling attention to the business of show. Serving as Senior VP of Publicity for Island Def Jam Records, he brought Druhill, the R&B supergroup, Ronald Isley, of the legendary Isley Brothers, superstar Karen Clark Sheard and rap icon, DMX, to prominence. Angelo collected more than 22 million in global record sales for DMX, when he took the helm of DMX's career as President and General Manager of Bloodline Records. Always busy, he wrote 3 best-selling books, WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE?; ASK ANGELO-45 Years of Industry Excellence and THE SENSE OF SUCCESS. Presently, Angelo is partnering with BET Networks to produce four shows: Harlem Hall of Fame, which will honor and celebrate Billy Dee Williams, Congressman Charles Rangell, Leslie Uggams, fashion maverick Audrey Smaltz and producer/recording artist/fashion mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. Angelo's advocacy lies with the LGBTQ community, having served as Chairman of the Board of NYC's Gay Men of African Descent (GMAD), hosting fundraiser shows to combat the global issue of HIV/AIDS; working with Unity Felllowship Church Movement on their 35th Anniversary Gala under the leadership of Archbishop Carl Bean, who recorded “Born This Way” during his own stellar career at Motown Records. He has been called the Sultan of Swag; The Henry Higgins of Hip Hop, The Angel of Artist Development, The Public Relations Maverick, but he sees himself as simply a man who has a great work ethic, who has lived his life following his mother's mantra of growing from great to greatest, and helping others to realize theirs as well, staying steeped in his faith. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ozzie-stewart/support
Glenn Miller was born in Georgetown, Guyana in South America, was educated at Christ Church Secondary School and attended Queen's College in his homeland. He then came to realize his dreams in the United States. After becoming an Assistant Vice President at Manufacturers Hanover Trust, he began as an intern at Double XXposure and later became Vice President of Operations, under the tutelage and guidance of the company's President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Angelo Elllerbee. While at the company for 7 1/2 years, Glenn provided public relations services for celebrities such as: Dionne Warwick, Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys, DMX, Dru Hill, Shabba Ranks, Big Daddy Kane and other multi platinum artists. He was the innovator of Funk Night at Café Wha?, the legendary music club in Greenwich Village that was frequented by Chaka Khan, Nona Hendrix, Cheryl "Pepsii'' Riley and others, as well as the creator of the famous Open Mic showcase at the Village Underground where Tommy Mattola, Mariah Carey, Ashford & Simpson, Stephanie Mills, Carl Thomas, Danny DeVito and other artists frequented. Some of the corporate clients he worked with were: the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, The Goodwill Games. The Literacy Crusade, ASCAP and Rough Riders/Cash Money Tour. Glenn created his company Kudegras Entertainment to continue his PR work which came in handy as he began losing his eyesight, until 2001, when he became visually disabled. Not letting that stop him, Glenn with assistance, began singing and performing poetry at events, constantly challenging himself. He also had taken a stand to help the underserved, downtrodden, those who were outcast and those looked down upon despite his own challenges. But his biggest joy was bringing people together, making them happy through food, drink, music, and great conversations. It made him happy to provide guests with his and their favorite dishes. Glenn was a playful, thoughtful, honest, giving, inspiring, gay, Black blind man, who ironically saw more than those who could see. He loved living life and bringing people together, taking immense pleasure in their joy. His former boss, Mr. Ellerbee described him as “phenomenal, a diamond among gems, whose contributions were worldly.” Glenn Miller passed on August 15, 2021, although his legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of those he touched. His life and mind were very impactful and dearly missed. Final edits by David Martin --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ozzie-stewart/support
