In this gripping episode of The Brick Session, host Mark Livesey sits down with former elite triathlete and anti-doping advocate Nate Llerandi to explore one of sport's most controversial topics: why some athletes choose to cheat. From the psychology of performance pressure to the gray areas of intent, Mark and Nate don't hold back when they discuss the motivations behind doping. They also examine the uphill battle faced by drug testing agencies, including the technical challenges and legal loopholes that make securing convictions incredibly difficult. Plus, brace yourself for a few of the most absurd excuses ever offered by busted athletes, including the infamous "sexually transmitted doping" and the "kissing my girlfriend who took something" defense. It's a raw, honest, and sometimes laugh-out-loud conversation that shines a light on the dark corners of competitive sport.More about Nate LlerandiNate Llerandi is a former elite triathlete and accomplished endurance athlete who transitioned into a career in technology and mentorship. Welcome to Game Changers with Jeff Newkirk, where we speak with people who have done something to make this world a better place. It's simple: inspire, educate, and let's go change this world! On today's episode, Jeff welcomes guest Laura Wilkinson, a three-time Olympian and Olympic gold medalist. She started diving in her freshman year of high school and was told she was too old to start a new sport. She won the US's first national title in diving and overcame great obstacles in 1998 to win the Goodwill Games as the only US diver to ever achieve this. Laura shattered her right foot in three places and only had 3 weeks back in the water before she tried out and made her first Olympic team. She beat impossible odds by starting in 8th place and then ending up winning in first place. She won the 2004 World Cup, 19 US National trials, and won the Olympic Spirit Award. She had been inducted into five different Hall of Fames and qualified for the 2021 Olympic Trials with her four children and husband cheering her on. Laura now has a podcast called Pursuit Gold, and she helps coach athletes to overcome roadblocks, compete confidently, and fall back in love with their passion. First, Laura talks about how she wanted to compete in the Olympics as a little kid in 1994 and wanted to be a gymnast. She realized at 13 that she was not at the right level to go to the Olympics for gymnastics, so she searched for another sport. She had coaches tell her she was too old to switch and that she was a waste of space. Authority figures are people you are supposed to look up to and trust. You can either believe them and cave in on yourself or defy them. She realized it was their issue and not hers, so it lit a fire inside her. She now has caution with the words she says and the impact they carry. She has had amazing coaches, but the best ones are when they create an atmosphere where you can do the very best that you can and achieve your dreams. They make it fun and know their athletes with how they think and how to mold them. After Laura shattered her foot, she went through mental training and preparation for the Olympic trials. She did that through visualization where she started imagining the actions and steps to go through for a dive. Her coach, Kenny, said she couldn't look back and think about the what-ifs, but she had to look forward and make a new plan. She studied video, visualized the actions of her dive, hobbled up to the diving board on one leg, and imagined every scenario with made-up competitions and her competitors. She was prepared for any given situation and was more prepared than she ever could have been without training physically. When she started to doubt, her teammates cheered her on, wouldn't let her quit, and believed in her too. We are sometimes so close to success when we are about to give up. After talking to so many athletes who have overcome incredible odds, she says the one thing they all have in common is a belief that it is going to work. Everyone believed in what they were doing and thought it was going to be successful. Next, they discuss faith in God and how God can use anything for His purpose and His good. Sometimes we have to go through the fire to refine us and make us better than before. She grew up in the church, left it, and came back to church during her sophomore year in college. This time we read The Golden Basement by David Norman Lewis, self-published in March of 2023. This was recommended by long-time listener, first-time caller Max who sent us a wonderful email recommending that we read this saying, "A few months ago you might have noticed a poem titled "$Reward$If$Found$" stapled up all over Cambridge, there were a couple reddit threads about it. On going back to my hometown of Seattle, WA I found out the poem is from a local self-published book...The author has been stapling the same poem everywhere. The novel is a "kids' book" about underground monsters controlling people's thoughts during the 1990 Goodwill Games...There's a YouTube video where the author is trying to sell it with donuts. You have to check it out. I so want to hear your takes on it…I emailed the author and he told me the baker is a friend of his. They once worked together on trying to make a new religion for Seattle but nobody showed up." Thank you so very much, Max, for your longtime support and for recommending this book. It was very different from anything we've read before and we actually didn't hate it! Today's show includes our usual barnyard language plus discussion or mention of: emotional abuse, enslavement, murder, parental neglect and abuse, sexual assault, and suicide. So much of our lives happen in the mind. Some neuroscientists will argue all of it is happening in the mind. But without question, so much of life is about your mindset. How we manage stress, disease, failure, challenges and hurdles, those are all about our mindset. That is why I brought on gold medalist and mindset master Laura Wilkinson, who won medals in every competition she ever qualified for and decided to go for another Olympic gold at the age of 39.Laura Wilkinson is an Olympian diver who holds a rare honor of having won an individual gold medal at every major international meet for which she was eligible. A specialist on the platform, Wilkinson attended the University of Texas where she was NCAA Champion in 1997 and 1999, won the 1998 Goodwill Games, won her first Olympic gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Games and has since won medals at World Cups (2004) and World Championships (2005) as well as competed in two other Olympic games (2004, 2008). She is an inductee in the Swimming Hall of Fame, a 19-time US champion and returned from retirement at age 39 with the aim to compete at Tokyo 2020. A combination of the COVID pandemic delay and serious neck surgery meant that never happened but it motivated Laura to take her coaching to a new level by creating the online course Confident Competitor, with the goal of helping athletes eliminate performance anxiety.Join us as we explore:What it means to have a champion's mindset whether you are a gold medal Olympian or a 15-year-old Laura who was told she started too late and her diving would never amount to anything. What it means to be anti-fragile, resilient and develop grit by developing the mindset that our most painful setbacks and defeats can become our greatest strengths and lessons. The power of mentorship, finding inspiration from others, their stories, and their struggles. Why goals can be “unrealistic” but why it is also okay not to accomplish them, how to overcome fear, the power of self-talk, the importance of flexibility and adaptability, and why flow state is not something magical that just happens but must be trained and prepared for.How to approach athleticism and performance as you begin to mature in age.Contact:Website – https://www.laurawilkinson.comCourse – Confident Competitor, https://pursuitofgold.lpages.co/confident-competitor-2023/Mentions:Person - Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Flow StateBook – Steven Kotler, The Art of Impossible.Product – KAATSU, https://madetothrive.co.za/product/kaatsu-c3-black/Support the showSupport the show on Patreon:As much as we love doing it, there are costs involved and any contribution will allow us to keep going and keep finding the best guests in the world to share their health expertise with you. Glenn Miller was born in Georgetown, Guyana in South America, was educated at Christ Church Secondary School and attended Queen's College in his homeland. He then came to realize his dreams in the United States. After becoming an Assistant Vice President at Manufacturers Hanover Trust, he began as an intern at Double XXposure and later became Vice President of Operations, under the tutelage and guidance of the company's President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Angelo Elllerbee. While at the company for 7 1/2 years, Glenn provided public relations services for celebrities such as: Dionne Warwick, Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys, DMX, Dru Hill, Shabba Ranks, Big Daddy Kane and other multi platinum artists. He was the innovator of Funk Night at Café Wha?, the legendary music club in Greenwich Village that was frequented by Chaka Khan, Nona Hendrix, Cheryl "Pepsii'' Riley and others, as well as the creator of the famous Open Mic showcase at the Village Underground where Tommy Mattola, Mariah Carey, Ashford & Simpson, Stephanie Mills, Carl Thomas, Danny DeVito and other artists frequented. Some of the corporate clients he worked with were: the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, The Goodwill Games. The Literacy Crusade, ASCAP and Rough Riders/Cash Money Tour. Glenn created his company Kudegras Entertainment to continue his PR work which came in handy as he began losing his eyesight, until 2001, when he became visually disabled. Not letting that stop him, Glenn with assistance, began singing and performing poetry at events, constantly challenging himself. He also had taken a stand to help the underserved, downtrodden, those who were outcast and those looked down upon despite his own challenges. But his biggest joy was bringing people together, making them happy through food, drink, music, and great conversations. It made him happy to provide guests with his and their favorite dishes. Glenn was a playful, thoughtful, honest, giving, inspiring, gay, Black blind man, who ironically saw more than those who could see. He loved living life and bringing people together, taking immense pleasure in their joy. His former boss, Mr. Ellerbee described him as “phenomenal, a diamond among gems, whose contributions were worldly.” Glenn Miller passed on August 15, 2021, although his legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of those he touched. His life and mind were very impactful and dearly missed. Final edits by David Martin --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ozzie-stewart/support

Mike McCarthy got his first taste of bike racing at the Kissena Velodrome. After a few years away from racing he picked it right back up at 14 years old. This time he began riding and racing in Central Park in New York City. By 1983 he got an invite to a junior winter camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. He eventually became a 4 year resident at the OTC. In 1986 he won a national championship. By 87 he was a Pan Am Gold medalist in the team pursuit. The next year he did the Olympics and got 9th in the team pursuit. In 1990 he won a bronze medal in the pursuit at worlds. 1992 Mike is world champion in the pursuit at 5k. He beat Shaun Wallace for the jersey. 93 was a wash because of Epstein Barr Virus. 1995 hit and he was back on track and riding for Saturn till 98. In between that time Mike rode another Olympics in 96 and won stages in Redlands, Tour de Taiwan, Tour of Japan, Boulder and multiple crits. In 1998 he smashed the Goodwill Games in his hometown and eventually retired. I'll admit it, I'm a fan of Mike's just like I'm a fan of Jame Carney, Mike Creed to Erik Saunders. I hope you enjoy the interview because I sure did.

If you were around Seattle in 1990 — or watching Turner Broadcasting channels anywhere in America — you may remember the "Goodwill Games." The games faded out by 2001. What happened?
To celebrate our 100th episode, we decided to go back to the beginning. The Mighty Ducks was the subject of our very first podcast and it was passably entertaining, so surely this sequel could hit some of the same heights, right? Well, no. This is pretty much the same movie all over again, only far worse. The emotion in the Gordon/Charlie relationship is just not there and all the attempts at comedy are dreadful failures. As for the story, the Ducks...Team USA...whatever travel to Los Angeles for the Goodwill Games and run up against the powerful Iceland "kids". Will our overdogs (or overducks) overcome? Will they?! When you have a secret weapon like the knucklepuck and a bunch of wacky new recruits for Emilio Estevez to coach, it's a foregone conclusion. So miss important commitments while you rollerblade forlornly on the boardwalk, but be sure to stick our talk about D2 in your earbuds as you skate around and contemplate the meaning of your life. You can tweet us (@moviefiend51 and @scoringatmovies). You can email us too (scoringatthemovies@gmail.com).
This heartwarming underdog story follows Wolf Stansson, who after an improbable run in the NHL returns home to Iceland to build its non-existent hockey program. With something to prove the small island nation makes their international debut at the Goodwill Games where they face off against the arrogant Team USA. Will Team Iceland's skill, training and discipline be enough to prevail against the violent, cheating Americans? In this weeks episode I had a ball chatting to former Australian distance running superstar; Susie Power. In this chat, Susie details her incredible running journey, the many ups and downs and some major learnings. Some key takeaways I took from this chat included: ‘the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.’ Or that, for most runners; ‘good life balance often parallels optimal performance.’ Susie still holds multiple U/20 Australian records, was a pen pal and close friend to Paula Radcliffe growing up, was a silver medalist to Gabriella Szabo in the 3000m at the 1994 World Junior Track & Field Championships. Was the Bronze medallist in the 10,000m behind only the Kenyans at the 2001 Goodwill Games and 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games. Is still the Sydney City2Surf woman’s race record holder (45:01) from 2001. Ran an incredible 31:25 in the rain at the 2001 Zatopek 10,000m in an incredible display of front running. Susie also ran a quick 67:56 at the 2002 Great North Half marathon. Outside of running, Susie’s life is all but boring and she sure still hasn’t slowed down, she is now a single mum to 6 kids!

Olympic Gold Medalist Laura Wilkinson Tells Her Story Today on The Neil Haley Show's Caregiver Dave Celebrity Segment, Caregiver Dave and The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Olympic Gold Medalist Laura Wilkinson Tells Her Story. Laura Wilkinson's first leap of faith from the 10 meter platform was at the age of 15. After being told by one of her teachers that she was too old to start a new sport, Laura plunged into diving anyway. Nine months later, she was kicked off of her high school diving team for being a “waste of space.” The next year, Laura won her first US National Title, made the US National Team, and earned a bronze medal at the World Cup. Laura overcame great obstacles to win her first major international gold medal, the 1998 Goodwill Games. She is the only American diver to ever win a gold medal at this prestigious competition. In 1999 after winning her second NCAA Division 1 title, Laura left her college scholarship behind to return home to chase her Olympic dream. Shortly before the 2000 Olympic Trials, Laura shattered her right foot in a training accident. But with a persevering heart, she was not deterred by this injury. Together, Laura and her coach, Kenny Armstrong, designed unique training methods to utilize the mental aspects of diving to keep Laura's “head in the game.” She had just three weeks back in the water to physically train prior to the Olympic Trials. The mental training began to pay off when Laura won the Trials making her first Olympic Team. Three months later, while wearing a protective shoe to walk up the ladder to the platform, Laura made history in Sydney, Australia.

The latest episode of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Legends Podcast is with 2017 Distinguished Member and two-time NCAA champion Andre Metzger. SUBSCRIBE TO THE SHOW Apple Podcasts | Stitcher | Spreaker | iHeartRadio | Spotify | Google Play Music | Android | RSS For those historians who refer to the 1980s as the “Golden Age“ of American wrestling, Michigan native Andre Metzger shines bright as one of its stars. Starting with a 27-second win by fall in his first match in the ninth grade, Metzger wrestled an estimated 2,000 matches in freestyle, collegiate and Greco-Roman. His 1,870 victories equate to an amazing .935 winning percentage. Ending with comeback attempts to make the 2012 U.S. Olympic team and 2014 U.S. World team, his storied career spanned an incredible five decades. Following a stellar high school career that included a state championship, Metzger wrestled in the 1979 World Championships in San Diego. He won the bronze medal and became the youngest American to medal in the World Championships at the age of 19 – a record that stood for 36 years. Combining freestyle, Greco-Roman and judo styles, Metzger changed the sport of wrestling and made it more exciting to watch. He is one of the few wrestlers to have a takedown move named after him -- The Metzger. At the University of Oklahoma from 1979 to 1982, Metzger was a four-time All-American and two-time NCAA champion at 142 pounds, after he placed fifth and second his first two years. In 1980, he made a serious bid for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team. Leading in a late-round match against 1977 NCAA champion Steve Barrett of Oklahoma State in the Olympic Trials, Metzger suffered an ankle fracture that ended his Olympic hopes. His quest for an Olympic Team spot four years later ended when he got a severe case of shellfish poisoning and couldn’t compete in the final trials. In national competition, Metzger won three freestyle and three Greco-Roman AAU Junior championships, as well as five AAU Senior freestyle championships with three runner-up finishes. Internationally, he earned two silver medals, three bronze and a fourth-place finish in the World Championships. He also captured two first-place titles in the Pan American Games and finished second in the 1986 Goodwill Games in Moscow. For his prolific career, dedication and contributions to the sport of wrestling, Andre Metzger is honored as a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. We spoke with Mel Hauschildt in November last year as she was starting to finally come good again after a rough year or two with injuries and surgeries - have you heard her story?!?! Good thing we chat about it. At the time we spoke she was preparing for Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney and Ironman Western Australia - both of which she won! It appears that Mel is well and truly back in the Haus! But on top of that we discussed a plethora of things from her involvement in Steeplechase being included for women in the Goodwill Games and beyond, plus a lot of chatter about chocolate.
ANDY CROWE ● BILL YATES ● NICK WALKER ● MIKE PLANT NICK WALKER: Welcome to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers. Every couple of weeks we reserve this time to meet together and discuss the things that matter most to you in this diverse and ever-changing realm of project management. We want to support you, embolden you, reassure you, and maybe even light a fire in areas that have grown cold. And we do that by exploring the experiences of others who have been where you are or are there right now. I'm your host, Nick Walker, and with me are the two guys who fill the room with experience, Andy Crowe and Bill Yates. Andy, if our listeners are into sports, teams, leadership, our guest today is the guy they want to hear from. ANDY CROWE: We're bringing it all together today, aren't we, Nick. This is going to be a good ‘cast. NICK WALKER: Well, let's meet our guest. Mike Plant is in his 14th season with the Atlanta Braves organization, his second season as President of Development. He's been instrumental in establishing a new home for the team at the newly opened SunTrust Park and its adjacent development, The Battery Atlanta. Before he joined the Braves organization, Mike was Executive Vice President of Turner Sports. He managed the Goodwill Games, has helped organize various phases of the Olympic Games, and serves on numerous committees and boards for the U.S. Olympic Committee. A former Olympian himself, Mike Plant was a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic speedskating team, and continues to lead speedskating and cycling organizations in this country and internationally. Mike, it is a privilege to have you here on Manage This. Thanks for joining us. MIKE PLANT: Thank you, thank you. NICK WALKER: You bring a lot of experience to the table, and we want to get into some of that. But I'm guessing that that kind of experience is probably sort of a prerequisite for all that's involved in building, not only this new stadium, but the adjacent shops and restaurants and parking facilities. That kind of project could probably overwhelm a lesser human. MIKE PLANT: Yeah, well, my dad told me a long time ago, don't become a legend in your own mind. So I try to keep that in perspective. But, you know, if I look back on my athletic career and all the things I did after that in the world of sport, young people ask me, what's the one word that you think would define who you are and where you got your drive from? And I think it's really – it's perseverance. It's understanding how to persevere through some very challenging times, daily or project-wise, and don't lose sight of what the ultimate objective is. And so, I mean, you'll get there. And if you have to jump over, go under, push over, go on the side of the hurdle, just there's a way to get to the end. And if you can align all the people that are with you to understand sort of that philosophy, have fun while you're doing it, work hard while you're doing it, but persevere through some tough times. You'll get to the end, and you'll accomplish what you set out to do. NICK WALKER: Well, most recently, how did you end up in the position that you're in right now, the President of Development? MIKE PLANT: Well, I mean, fortunately, I'm one of those individuals, and I try to also tell young people this, is you've got to find something you wake up every day and kind of pinch yourself and say, I can't believe they actually pay me to do this. So if you can do that in your life, and when you set out on your career path, that obviously is something I've been fortunate to accomplish. I mean, I transcended from my field-of-play athletic career into a world of sport, way back when it was in its infancy. I mean, I sold my first sponsorship deal in 1980 when I'm 21 years old, banging out a proposal on my mom and dad's electric typewriter with Wite-Out. But I knocked down $375,000 from the Atari Corporation,
Mike, Tommy, and Kevin recount the chain of events that led to Gordon Bombay becoming Team USA's Junior Goodwill Games head coach. Why was Jan pitching Bombay to be the coach while he was still in the minors? Did Hans and Jan pay Norbert for the hit?

THE SEA-TOWN PODCAST: Interviewing Seattle's Business Leaders and Entrepreneurs
This week's guest is Melissa Forziat, Owner of Melissa Forziat Events. She also helps a lot of small businesses with their marketing needs. Everything from free resources like her ebook to help them get started to marketing consulting and coaching. Highlights From This Episode: Melissa didn't start off planning to create her own small business... She grew up competing in gymnastics but after she was done being able to compete, she wanted to be able to stay connected to the gymnastics and athletic world. So Melissa started doing major international sport events and started by volunteering at the 1998 Goodwill Games. Next she worked the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy and then worked a couple years for the U.S. Olympic Committee as part of their International Relations Department, 2010 Olympic Winter Games in BC, CA and the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. At the end of the Rugby World Cup, she ended up landing in Seattle and as she was interviewing for event planning positions and jobs around Seattle, everyone wanted to know what she had done here specifically. In one of her informational interviews, she accidentally said that she is now accepting new clients. A week later that person referred a client to her, who was looking for a free-lance event manager... And so Melissa Forziat Events was created! After starting her own business, she also has the flexibility to work some additional international sporting events again, like she did with the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto and 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Brazil. The marketing piece came a little later, as you can't really do an event without marketing it, so they are really go hand-in-hand. When she got to Seattle, many of her friends ended up being small business owners and she was always getting questions from them about how to grow their client base, often on a very small budget. She also started working closely with a Venture Non-Profit, a Seattle organization that helps educate and train low-income, minority and other under-serviced people on how to take their idea and start their own small businesses. They also have limited resources and so she found that the skill set she was building to help her small business owner friends and the clients of Ventures was very much the same... People just trying to get by, pay their employees, take care of their families and pay for life but don't have a lot of money to get their message out there to acquire new clients and grow their business. Melissa got involved with Ventures Non-Profit (check out our interview with Beto Yarce, Venture Executive Director on Ep. 28), as a means to get to know more people in Seattle and be able to help. She started volunteering with them on a committee and was then invited to join the Ventures Board of Directors. She really sees the value of small business owners being able to be part of a community like Ventures because so many business owners, despite the type of business, share the same pinpoints and struggles as they figure out how to start and run their own business and sharing and learning from each other and realizing that they are not alone in it is huge. Though Melissa's business is named Melissa Forziat Events, most of the events she works on a larger scale projects, while she does a lot more on the marketing side for small businesses and solopreneurs. Even if you currently have zero dollars to spend on marketing, she has options for that... like her FREE "Small Business Marketing On A Budget" ebook and weekly blog with good marketing tips and a strong Facebook community full of other small business owners sharing tips, and helping each other out. Melissa provides a ton of free marketing information to help get small businesses to a place of being able to utilize her paid information, consultation and coaching. What do you love most about what you do? The people that Melissa works with. Whether working with a non-profit on an event or a small business on their marketing, there is an underwriting sense of passion she senses in her clients and she gets a lot of fulfillment in helping her clients realize their goals and dreams in their business, professional and personal lives. What have you found to be the most challenging aspect of running your own business? Staying confident. As your getting started and trying new things or taking on new types of clients, you may not have the experience yet to feel confident in your abilities. What was most surprising or unexpected with opening your own business? The shear volume of highs and lows in the roller coaster that happens in a single day. What set's you apart from others in your industry? The majority of the businesses Melissa works with are micro-businesses (5 or fewer employees) and she really enjoys helping those smaller businesses grow and get to a better place and while she likes to work with businesses in Seattle, she works with businesses all over the world. What is your greatest strength? Creativity in both how she helps her clients and grows her business. What habit do you wish you had? Better sleep schedule. What are you passionate about? Supporting the people she cares about... and her clients end up becoming those people. She also does improve comedy in Seattle. In the past, what was holding you back from becoming the entrepreneur you are today? After doing one of her first speaking engagements of teaching an Advance Marketing Class for Ventures Non-Profit, she had a line of business owners lining up to ask her questions and she realized that she does think about marketing for a living and way more then most business owners do, so she does have knowledge to share and a valuable service to provide. It comes back to confidence in having something that can benefit and help others. What is the best advice you have ever received? "Except Invitations". What is a personal habit that contributes to your success? A very detail oriented hard worker. Do you listen to podcasts? What are your favorites? Amy Porterfield podcast, which is a marketing focused podcast (I've heard an episode of Pat Flynn's "Smart Passive Income", with Amy Porterfield as a guest and it was quite good). The type of podcast's you listen to can tell you a lot about how you want to be, based on what you are drawn to or relate to the content and how it is presented. Finding the podcasts you like and then asking yourself why you like it can help you develop yourself and your brand and speaking style. What is your one book recommendation for our listeners? Melissa's FREE "Small Business Marketing On A Budget" ebook, which covers 10 different types of marketing that you can do if you have little to no money to spend on marketing. This week's show examines the NWA Power Hour from August 18, 1989. Included: Sting vs. Ron Simmons, the Wrestling News Network with Gordon Solie, Ric Flair vs. The Cuban Assassin, Funk's Grill with Teddy Long and Norman the Lunatic, and Lex Luger vs. Tommy Rich. The usual background talk with many tangents such as the Goodwill Games, the Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame, people who have gone an hour with Ric Flair, and the host has a crisis of confidence in his impersonations.
With Tommy out, Mike and Kevin steal his idea and talk about the effects the 1988 Jamaican bobsled team on Trinidad and Tobago's run to the Junior Goodwill Games. They also discuss whatever happened to Terri the cocktail waitress. Show Notes Jamaica we have a bobsled team: Shoutout to this bus driver: @dartmedia Driver this morning on 019 (#39112) is A+. Went of her way to make sure a slightly lost older man got to the right bus. So kind. — Kevin Cullen (@KevinMCullen) February 17, 2017 Cool Runnings for the unfamiliar. Trinidad and Tobago: Jamaica to Trinidad and Tobago is a two hour, 55 minute flight. Dallas to Detroit is a two hour, 30 minute flight. Dallas to Philadelphia is a three hour flight. The U.S.A. beat Trinidad and Tobago by a score of 9-2: Shoutout to Hasely Crawford for bringing home the gold medal for Trinidad and Tobago in 1976. Sam Gellard, hockey star, born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. We talked about the Iceland team inspiring another generation down the line in Episode 88. Thanks to Altin for the #QuackQuestion: "Whatever happened to Terri the cocktail waitress in D2? Did she ever become "head of production for a major studio"? How low did she go in order to make it in Hollywood? And, what are the chances that she went home with the Minnesota Miracle Man that night?" Judging from Gordon's face here, he's definitely in:
Mike, Tommy, and Kevin break down how stupid the Junior Goodwill Games tournament set up really was and also look at the failures of Russia and Canada during the games. Later, they learn how the tournament ignited a 22-year, system-wide doping process in Russia. Show Notes We talked about Mendoza being the child of Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez in Episode 80. What we know about the Junior Goodwill Games standings, in one picture: The journey in Group A: Iceland (1-0) def. Trinidad (0-1) Germany (1-0) def. Italy (0-1) U.S.A. (1-0) def. Trinidad (0-2, knocked out of the tournament) Iceland (2-0) def. Germany (1-1) U.S.A. (2-0) def. Italy (0-2, knocked out of the tournament) Iceland (3-0) def. U.S.A. (2-1) U.S.A. (3-1) def. Germany (1-2, knocked out of tournament) Group A No. 1 seed: Iceland. Group A No. 2 seed: U.S.A. The journey in Group B: Russia (1-0) def. Sweden (0-1) Canada (1-0) def. Denmark (0-1) Denmark (1-1) def. France (0-1) Sweden (1-1) def. France (0-2, knocked out of the tournament) Canada (2-0) def. Russia (1-1) Sweden (2-1) def. Denmark (1-2, knocked out of the tournament) (Ed: Note, Mike misspoke at this point. He meant, Sweden and Canada would play, not Russia and Canada. Sweden and Canada would be the matchup because Russia had already defeated Sweden.) Canada (3-0) def. Sweden (2-2, knocked out of the tournament.) Group B No. 1 seed: Canada, Group B No. 2 seed, Russia. We talked about Junior Goodwill Games qualifying in Episode 41. Our solution for the Mighty Ducks playoff format when they were back in Minnesota was that it was based on geography. We talked about that in Episode 10. The headline for team U.S.A's win over Canada: Some Bro named John Zidich is USA Today's President and Publisher. He's on Twitter, but has tweeted just twice since joining in 2009. They came four years apart. The article on the entire Russian team being replaced at the U-18 World Championships because of doping. We talked about Iceland's Junior Goodwill Games sparking their run in the most recent UEFA championships in Episode 88. Thanks to @catania412 for the #QuackQuestion. @QuackAttackPod can you guys do a podcast of why the jr. goodwill games only allowed 13 rostered players — Mike Catania (@catania412) November 29, 2016 From this shot of the Trinidad bench, we count seven or eight players, depending on if that kid in orange behin the coach with dreads is a player. That's roughly the same amount as Team USA. At least for here, there is no evidence that the Junior Goodwill Games handicapped the team.

Listen on Stitcher or the Google Play Music Store. Mike, Tommy, and not Kevin tackle three different topics in this grab bag episode. Was Linda using Charlie to get the Warrior name changed? Who do the Mighty Ducks root for? What would happen if Mighty Ducks/Hawks super team went to the Goodwill Games? Show Notes Thanks to @kreeves53, @Totally_Offside, and @jarrodbeasley for the #QuackQuestions that made up our grab bag. Here is our last grab bag. This is Charlie in the moments before he meets Linda: You think Linda doesn't know he's a jock? Dwayne is a tried and true Texan. We definitively know who he's rooting for in this Dallas Stars/Minnesota Wild series. Another option to consider when looking at the Ducks' rooting interest, they've met Mike Modano and Basil McRae: Twitter | Facebook | iTunes Pod intro and outro by Josh Luecht
Laura Wilkinson’s first leap of faith from the 10 meter platform was at the age of 15. Together, Laura and her coach, Kenny Armstrong, designed unique training methods to utilize the mental aspects of diving to keep Laura’s “head in the game.” She had just three weeks back in the water to physically train prior to the Olympic Trials. The mental training began to pay off when Laura won the Trials making her first Olympic Team. Three months later, while wearing a protective shoe to walk up the ladder to the platform, Laura made history in Sydney, Australia. Beating what many said were impossible odds in one of the biggest upsets in Olympic history, Laura, starting in eighth place and with a broken foot, came from behind to win the 2000 Olympic platform gold medal. Laura also won the 2004 World Cup and the 2005 World Championships, becoming the first woman in history to win all three coveted world titles in platform diving. Mike, Tommy and Kevin look at the qualfying process for the hockey portion of the Junior Goodwill Games. They break down how non-traditional powers Trinidad and Tobago and Iceland qualified and introduce a new feature, the #QuackQuestion. Show notes: The full list of teams: The 2014 Olympics had the 9 top teams in the IIHF World Ranking automatically qualify and the rest of the teams played a tournament to determine the final three teams. Cool Runnings came out on October 3, 1993. We talked about Iceland in Episode 2. The Ivan Hlinka Tournament actually has no bearing on the rankings of the next World Juniors because the Ivan Hlinka is unsanctioned by the IIHF. The U18 World Championships have a much bigger bearing on the rankings. We talked about Don Tibbles' marketing prowess in Episode 21. The United States won bronze in Olympic basketball in 2004.
